@Victoria: I train a mixed martial arts system, the American Advanced Combat System founded by Dan Timlin. One of its main roots is Jeet Kune Do which was developed by Bruce Lee. It also incorporates a lot of the Phillipino martial arts and the Mui Tai style of kickboxing... not to mention plain old American boxing. The school also heavily emphasizes developing the whole person, mentally and spiritually, and not just physically. Absolutely love it! :)

Weekend activity for me:
Saturday 1/28: 60-minute Combat Fitness class
Sunday 1/29: 15 minutes using the SparkPeople strength training program & 10 minutes of interval training on my heavy bag. Just bought an interval timer and I like using that a LOT better than trying to keep an eye on the clock or counting reps!

Happy Friday, everybody!

Two 15-minute walking breaks at work. I almost skipped my second break because I was so swamped at work. Then I realized that no one was going to die if I took 15 minutes to go walk, and that I'd feel a lot better and be more productive if I did.

Martial arts class was a 60-minute special class on grappling. Can't really say it was any kind of cardio workout, but it did show me that I've gotten a lot more flexible since I've started working out regularly! A couple of moves involved being on my back with my opponent kneeling between my legs with her hands grabbing my gi top... and I had to take my left leg and get it over her head! I am five-foot-nothin. Being able to do that is a HUGE accomplishment for me!!!

Hope everybody has a great weekend! :)

Almost forgot to check in tonight. Did my usual Wednesday routine... 2 15-minute walking breaks at work and 45 minutes of martial arts. I'm in the intermediate class, which doesn't usually do any kind of weapons work. However, our sensei decided that he wanted the advanced students to have a better grounding in the basics of weapons work so we worked with sticks tonight. Talk about an arm workout! :)

@VADAVICTORIA: Ooooh! Wall climbing sounds like fun!

I did 15 minutes of a Spark strength training routine followed by 10 minutes on my new heavy bag. Then 15 minutes of stretching (Slim & Limber video).

Now I just need to train my husband to understand that I should not be interrupted during my workout unless he's bleeding, broken, or on fire! (And, if he's on fire, he should hop in the shower.) I CERTAINLY don't need to be interrupted with an invitation to have him run to Little Caesar's and pick up some Crazy Bread for us!!! *sigh*

60-minute Combat Fitness class at my dojo. I like this class a lot. After our warm up we do about 20 minutes of cardio (punches, kicks, & knees against a foam shield). Then about 20 minutes of isometric strength training (forward and backward walking lunges, push-ups, tricep dips, wall sits). We finish off with about 15 minutes of ab exercises. We warm up well first and cool down and stretch afterwards.

I'd love to be able to do the Tuesday and Thursday evening classes as well, but my regular belt classes are Monday and Wednesday. If I started going to the dojo 5 out of 7 days I think my husband would kill me! *grin*

I had back to back appointments at work that kept me from taking my usual morning break, and I knew my afternoon wasn't going to be any better, so I decided to skip my leisurely lunch with a book and walked for 30 minutes.

This evening I graduated to brown belt in my martial arts class. Our graduations are where we show our friends and families what we do in a typical class, so we're moving around a lot. I logged it as 60 minutes, even though we went a little longer.

Tomorrow morning kicks off our Combat Fitness class and I'm very excited! emoticon

Anne is right both about the calories and the rest.

Of course, it is important to watch what you eat, but we do not count calories for this challenge and everyone's needs will be different. Do what works for you!

... and although ideally, we would like everyone to do cardio 5 days a week, 3 is fine!
... and if you have a really good medical reason don't do any. Taking care of ourselves comes first. The challenge is supposed to encourage us to do that, not hinder us.

Take care of your back, Betta! Are you able to do any core exercises to help strengthen it?

I'm not going to give any medical advice because I am not a medical professional, but I do know that they say abdominal exercises are good for the back. (At least sometimes. Maybe not in your case, I don't know.)

Here's a link to an SP article on exercising with back pain. (It's strength training, not cardio.)

Take it as easy as you need to. Better a few days off at the "I should watch this" stage than a few months off at the "should have taken care of this sooner" stage! :)

Martial arts class for 45 minutes tonight. KICKED MY BUTT!! I don't know if it's the fact that we have a graduation this Friday and they want to get us ready, or the fact that my allergies/sinuses are acting up and breathing was a bit harder... I'm pooped... but loving it!

I want to join!!! I didn't join before, but for week 1 I was sick. I still got in some exercise though.

January 1st- 30-Day Shred Level 2 comes to about 27 minutes, including the cooldown, probably 20-22 of actual cardio, burned 236 calories according to my heart monitor.

January 2nd - I walked 3.03 miles, a total of 67 minutes, burned 445 calories.

January 5th I managed to take a 1.5 mile walk, took 30 minutes, burned 174 calories.

For week 2:

January 9th- Did Biggest Loser Power Walk miles 1-2 with 5 pound dumbbells, 32 minutes, burned 239 calories.

January 10th- I did Biggest Loser challenge for Wii, Box Fit routine, Challenging level, and took a 2.24 mile walk. Altogether it was 82 minutes, and burned 518 calories.

January 11th- I ran in place on a mini trampoline for 30 minutes, burned 241 calories.

January 12th- I did 30-Day Shred Level 1, with the cooldown. About 22 to minutes of actual cardio, burned 251 calories.

January 13, I did Biggest Loser Power walk miles 1-4, with 5 pound dumbells and an 8 pound medicine ball when they were called for. 64 minutes of cardio, burned 620 calories.

January 14th, I did Bob Harper's Beginners Weight Loss Transformation, Plus the 10 minute abs workout.... I think both qualify as cardio because my heart rate stayed up... I also did Biggest Loser Power Walk miles 1&2, with weights.... 88 minutes of cardio altogether, 723 calories burned.

So do I get points for the first two weeks? Per my calculations week 1's points would total 3, and week 2's points would total 5.

Also for week 3 so far:

January 15th- Biggest loser Power Walk miles 1-2, 32 minutes, 261 calories.

Friday 1/13, walked for my two 15-minute breaks at work. I spent that time exploring the hidden hallways of my office complex and found a great route that only involves two flights of stairs.

Today will probably be snow shoveling and maybe mall walking. *sigh* I already miss the unseasonably warm spell we've been having!! lol

DSLICE418 - I love you posting of the week's activities!
You will have to give us an update on Friday and Saturday.

I thought I would find some time to do some cardio tonight, but fell asleep instead.
However, I don't work tomorrow and should definitely get some cardio in tomorrow!

When I am done, I will post a week summary too!

Don't worry about it if you are sick a day. The program allows for a rest day or two. emoticon

If you are sick and miss more than 2 days, don't worry about it anyway. Just concentrate on getting well! The team will lose points, but that's OK. We are here to encourage one another. We don't expect perfection, and life happens.

We get 3 points for each team member who does at least 20 min. of cardio on at least 3 days this week and posts it here. It goes up to 4 points for 4 days. The maximum is 5 points if it is 5 days. No extra points for 6-7 days. That's because we need rest too!

Thanks Anne for reposting here! emoticon

I didn't get to a computer after work yesterday... I walked at a moderate pace (15 minute/mile) for my two 15 minute breaks.

I'm not really sure how scoring and such is being tallied. I know that I logged other activity on another thread... but I'll say it again here to make sure it's going to the right place.

Saturday 1/7/12 45 minutes of moderate activity at a "try-it" Combat Fitness class at my dojo. Such a blast! I'm signed up for the 8-week class and it starts Saturday 1/21/12! Also, 45 minutes of low intensity activity at a "try-it" Mixed Martial Arts class at my dojo.

Sunday 1/8/12 30 minutes of moderate intensity walking (15 minute/mile) and 15 minutes of stretching.

Monday 1/9/12 15 minutes of moderate intensity walking and 45 minutes of low intensity martial arts class. (I count the martial arts class as low intensity only because we're not moving at the same level the entire time. Sure, the kickboxing and sparring rounds are intense, but we also do forms and stretching and time just listening to our instructors.)

Attitudes are contagious. Is yours worth catching?

Hi Team! I did my first day of the 5k Your Way program today - Walk 4, Jog 1 minute, for 29 minutes total today! I took my dog out with me, and he did not seem to enjoy the running parts. I came home and have some strength stuff to do.. taking a break now to catch up on some work emails. I am here in Reno... no snow yet, so the exercising outside is still working. Will definitely need some motivation when the snow and ice hits us!

Just checking in.

I don't think I will claim any cardio for yesterday. I did a lot of cleaning, including moving furniture, but it was kind of stop and go, with a lot of sorting through stuff. I don't think I got my heart rate going faster for 20 min. straight at any point during the day.

I will do some cardio today.
I also did 30 min. on Thursday, although I did not report it here yet.

Hmm, I don't know how much time I spent in cardio today. More than 2 hours...

We were stripping wallpaper. I see the fitness tracker counts painting. This was a lot harder than painting!

Yesterday I did 50 min. of cardio.

Twenty minutes outside although it was super cold, and then half an hour of low impact exercise while I watched TV last night.

This is great!
Just what I needed to get back in the groove.
