One thing that is annoying is when we are expected to chip in to a social committee that buys all the treats. In that case they aren't free any more and we can insist, beg, or suggest they include healthy food as choices.
Then there are the times when maybe we are the ones to bring the food and we can try and bring healthy choices... or at least healthier choices...
I'm lucky. I'm not facing a lot of free food at work this year.
I have been battling the food table for 3 years now. It is in eye sight of my cubicle. I now the coworker means well but she puts out stuff that really isn't healthy. I would rather have hummus, fresh veggies and so on. But I can't tells them what to do. I really need will power on those days.

Stores are another source of free food that I hadn't thought of, but I know what you mean.
I agree eating beforehand really helps. I do that sometimes. If I eat supper before I go out it helps.
However, when there's free food at work and you are there all day, that's really tough. I'm lucky I don't have that where I'm working now. I've had it a lot in the past though.
Sometimes it helps me, if I just tell myself, "That food's no good." I can do that with chips and donuts. Some foods are harder to resist than others though. For me, homemade goodies are the hardest to resist.
I have "grazed" my way through SAM's or a grocery store many times!!!! It is REALLY hard not to!!!! I always try to eat before I go somewhere that, where there will be free food, so I don't eat as much!!!! I think it just boils down to will power!!!! And i don't have much of that!!!! LOL LOL!!!!
