I'm NOT going to exercise today! It's counter-intuitive to my fitness goals, but I have too many things to do today that are, I must admit, more important than exercise right now. I have to accept that some days, I can't do everything I want to do and that some things CAN wait until tomorrow.

I am a workaholic!!! I know how you feel. I owned and run 2 Business for 15 years. Its hard some times to separate work and home time... Start with one day a week and make it a game night with the family or a night out with the buddies. Then progress from there. Its hard when or if you have a lot of people depending on you... I was one of those dads that would sit at my kids games and practices with a laptop and ledgers and work instead of watching my kids be kids.. You have to make your family the priority and delegate some of your work to people you can trust.. AS HARD AS THAT IS!!!!!!!!!?. I wish you luck and hope this helps..

I am 9 Days into being more mindful. I've dropped another pound in that process! WOO-HOO! So far, I've been mindful up until about 5 PM. Then things go wrong.

So, Today, I'm going to try and push that 5 PM back to 7 PM or the rest of the night! I AM GOING TO DO THIS! I will try every day and keep trying until I get there!

I am making action steps to not eat so much in 1 sitting. I'm getting my control back from what ever it was that was making me eat & eat. When I was doing that, it was like I was in my body screaming to stop it, but I couldn't. It was so... crazy. I don't want that feeling anymore. I am more in control today by being mindful of how much I'm eating!!! I'm 3 days into this streak.... how long can I go?

Janetlee... thank you so much for the support, encouragement and belief that I can do it. Reading your post really made my day!! Thanks again and I hope that you are enjoying a wonderful week!
emoticon emoticon emoticon

So today I am focusing on my 10 item "to do" list. With each item I check off I am one step closer to getting my house in a place where I can feel like I am letting go of some of the clutter in my life that is holding me back in my past. There are so many of my husbands things still in the house that I would like to either get rid of or delegate to the garage which was his space. Although I made an attempt to deal with them I really just moved them from one place to another. This summer I do want to take his favorite clothes (which I have stored in the basement) and make small quilts for each of the kids, something so that they will always feel like they have a part of him with them. I don't want to undertake that task until I feel as if my house (especially my laundry room where I will be working) is in order. I am a huge fan of "Flylady" and although I haven't completely read her book "Body Clutter" I do feel that weight (body clutter) and house clutter are very closely related. So hopefully I can work on both areas of clutter in my life and by the time the weather is nice enough to enjoy being outside I won't have tasks to keep me indoors! :)

I think I gain control over myself by remembering that I'm better today than I was yesterday. I know I'm human, but I try to improve each and every day, and that gives me a sense of control. Only I can decide which path I'll take. I can either curl in a ball and accept the things that I don't want in my life, or I can take action and remove the negative things. There are days when it seems easier to accept the bad, but most days, I choose to take action.

Praying first thing or taking quiet time to set the tone for the day is an excellent idea to help control or feel in charge of destiny. I just wonder how or why we get to an out of control place. Is it being to busy, too distracted? Chemical addiction , eating cookies until I feel crappy. Sweet are my nemesis. I love them but I can not control eating them.

thanks for the post. emoticon

Control... funny, I find control to be a tricky thing for me. Sometimes I work so hard to have too much control that I bottle things up which has led to out of control eating behavior. So today, I am going to make a choice to stop trying to control things that I can't control and focus on things that I can. I am not going to worry about people in my past who are no longer part of my life, I am not going to allow my thoughts to turn to past events. Moving forward means letting go. If I find my thoughts heading in the wrong direction today I will stop what I am doing and do 5 minutes of exercise, such as stretching, deep breathing, dancing ... whatever it takes to relax, let go and breathe. I have to remember that this process is about me, my children and nobody else! :)

Thank you so much JanetLee. :) It really means a lot to hear that, I have spent the last three years being strong, thinking I had to hold everything together and not let my emotions out. I am completely 100% drained. Today I put on the huddle wall that I need support. I broke out in tears after, it was so hard and I realized that it was the first time since my husband died that I have outright asked for some support. I don't quite remember how I found SparkPeople but today I am feeling so very blessed that I did. emoticon emoticon

I have been preparing for today, knowing it would be stressful, painful, sad, hard. Marking the three year anniversary of my husbands death isn't easy, but it has helped to talk/write myself through it. To make this easier for today I can:
1. Remember to breathe, when the stress starts knotting in my stomach I will take the time to sit with a glass of water and slowly breathe in and out, cleansing breaths until that feeling passes
2. Let myself cry, keeping it in is even more painful than crying. I will no longer bury my feelings.
3. Laugh, I am going to find a funny movie for the kids and I to watch together tonight. I can't take away their pain but I can do my best to make this day as easy for them as possible.
4. Reaffirm to myself my reason for being here, to get my life back, to not let my weight take me away from my children.

Praying first thing in the morning before I start my day and family awakes...has helped me to stay in check with my goals and have a stress free day. Knowing Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ are with me all the day long helps me avoid many temptations....even the evil desserts that call my name...hahahaha emoticon emoticon emoticon

I am going to take control of when I exercise! I need to exercise first thing in the morning or as soon as I get home! No sitting down to dinner if I haven't worked out!

I'm gonna take control of my water intake!! I had always been good about getting my water in each day then I got sick, seriously dehydrated, and when I needed it most I just didn't drink enough. Been out of the hospital for just over a week now and still haven't gotten my water intake back up. Today I am going to fix that!!!

I am going to ensure that I leave enough room in my daily food log to have milk and cookies with hubby. Sometimes I have room, sometimes I don't, and lately I haven't had the room. He misses me for these nightly rituals, even if he doesn't say anything. I don't over-do it and I have certain cookies I eat that aren't full of preservatives and unnecessary sugars, but I still have to budget for them.

It will help me keep my food intake in check, and help me maintain a little something special between me and Beloved.

It's small, but it's important.

Hello to everyone,

I just wanted to get online and say "hi" to everyone. At the beginning of the week, the mental health agency where I work changed hands (whole new name, new corporation, everything) and I have been intensively trying to learn a whole new EVERYTHING, mainly computer system, but also new procedures and a lot more. I have been putting in 12-hour days at work and coming home exhausted. So, haven't managed to get online at all this week. I am looking for things to calm down a bit as we all learn the computer system better.

I'm glad to see some responses to this thread. Even in spite of the changes and stresses at work, most of which are positive--but change is challenging--I have managed to remain aware of my step of reducing portion sizes. So, that's a good start.

Amanda, how are you doing with your water intake? They always used to tell us that your bladder would "get used to" drinking all that water and you would get past the need to be in the bathroom every 15 minutes. I have never found that my bladder "got used to" drinking all that water, and since I'm a therapist I have to be able to wait for 50-60 minutes between pit stops. Not always easy with all that water. What is the experience of other people with this issue?

elle..or Capecodbabe...which do you prefer?...I also have become somewhat of an ice cream addict. My husband is a real fan and has it almost every night. I fell into the habit with him, and where I used to be "take it or leave it" with ice cream, now it has become a nightly "demand." Another habit I have to look at. For now, however, I'm going to keep my focus on portion size/control and work on learning that I don't have to be "stuffed" and uncomfortable to know that it's time to stop eating. (When you think about it, how would a person develop a preference for being "over-full" anyway?) Sounds crazy to me when I actually say it out loud.

Stay in touch everyone. I'll be better about being online as the next few days pass and the learning curve at work isn't quite so steep. Sue Ellen

I am taking control of my water intake, I've always been a water drinker, but had been slacking on my 8 a day. I've started tracking my water intake again and have been consuming well over 8 a day!

I like this thread. I also have the portion control problem, but for today I am going to skip the ice cream. I am becoming an ice cream addict, and oh, do I love those sugar cones.

I'll start this thread by proposing one thing for myself. I know that my portions are WAY TOO BIG. I regularly eat past my body's "full" feeling. For today, or I should say tomorrow since it's 11 p.m. now, I can continue to choose to eat whatever food I want (for now) but will consciously cut each portion that I would normally choose to eat IN HALF. I'll help myself be conscious of this choice by putting a yellow "sticky note" on my bathroom mirror so I'll see it first thing in the morning. What can you do for one day?

Sometimes our challenges seem so big that we don't know where to start. At least I feel that way at times. I forget that I can start with one thing. What is ONE WAY that you could help yourself feel empowered and in control today. I think we need to remember that big changes start with small choices.
