WOW! EVERYONE had SUCH great suggestions, tips and advice!

I also USE TO smoke.

A few things...
1. Be careful how you THINK and talk to yourself or others about it because ONLY present tense goes into your subconscious and both positive AND negative do.
While you are visualizing yourself how you want to be and ARE becoming more and more with EACH fresh healthy breath tell yourself or think of

I AM a nonsmoking, fresh, clean air breather.
I CAN do WHATEVER I choose and I CHOOSE to be a nonsmoking, fresh , clean air breather for myself and those I love!

Also practice not to say you are QUITTING smoking but rather you are stopping or better yet CHOOSING NOT to smoke... I know it sounds nitpicky but our subconscious minds are funny things and we have all been taught since little kids that being a QUITTER is a BAD thing .... You are NOT a quitter.

Tell yourself the TRUTH. YOU ARE the boss of YOUR life and YOUR body, not the other way around.

Tell yourself the TRUTH.
Even if you smoke often during the day.. there are still MORE MINUTES of the day and the night if you count them including during sleep.. that you have ALWAYS been and STILL ARE a nonsmoking clean air breather and ALL you need to do now is increase those minutes. Being a nonsmoking clean air breather has ALWAYS been your dominant natural state of being even during your heaviest periods of smoking IF you tell yourself the TRUTH. Now you are expanding that truth.

When you crave.. distract yourself with hobbies like someone else said. One of the biggest mistakes people make is to uproot a bad habit out of their life WITHOUT filling in the void with something positive in it's place, then they wonder WHY as they move along they Keep on falling back into the hole. FILL it up so you Can't fall in! Hobbies or distractions etc.

When you crave, do DEEP breathing exercises, Close your eyes and breathe in for two counts thru your nose while visualizing clean fresh healing energizing LIGHT and AIR filling your lungs and WASHING your entire BODY inside CLEAN and NEW. On the exhale, release the air through the mouth to a count of four... while visualizing all the toxins, tar, nicotine, ARSENIC, FORMELDAHYDE and many other poisons people don't realize are IN cigarettes (It is TRUE) leaving your body and life in the exhale like dirty murky dark air floating far far away where it can't hurt YOU NOR the loved ones around you. Do that till the craving passes.

GO to a lot of NONSMOKING places with NONSMOKING friends and support people or alone in the beginning, certain restaurants perhaps, Movie theaters, church, stores, plays, etc.

Clean the ashtray in your vehicle, fill it with mint sugar free gum or dried potpourri to look and smell NICE.

Get your teeth whitened, brush your teeth often, so you won't want to dirty them up or your breath.

I could go on and on since I have to work with people on this all the time in my hypnotherapy business...
but the MOST IMPORTANT thing is YOU have to REALLY WANT to quit... if YOU don't you won't. So you have nothing to worry about or be afraid of.. because when we REALLY WANT something we GET it. Think about it... and be honest with yourself... for example IF you saw your grandchild running into the street in traffic and YOU WANTED them to be safe, you would move heaven and hell if you had to, to get to that child and NO ONE would get in your way without you knocking them down,, isn't that so? So the TRUTH is YOU CAN and WILL and DO what YOU WANT when YOU WANT to and when it is IMPORTANT to YOU!

The same is TRUE of anything else, including smoking... and you might say, yes but the other example is a life and death emergency and plus it would hurt my precious loved one if I DIDNT do it and the truth is the same is true of THIS situation isn't it sweetie? {{HUG}}

CONGRATULATIONS on BEING a NONSMOKING FRESH CLEAN AIR BREATHER.. you and your lungs and your loved ones deserve NOTHING but the BEST healthiest FRESHEST TOP quality air and so YOU settle for nothing less! GOOD FOR YOU!!!!!

I can not use the chantix due to other health and med issues, but I do remember now that ( some where ) I have Allen's books - time to dig them out and do a long Sunday read tomorrow :)

130 days ago I quit. I used chantix from my doctor. It worked well for me. Allen Carr's The easy way to stop smoking is helpful too. He says to remember you are not giving up anything. You are getting to breathe fresh air all the time like the people who don't smoke do. Wow. Your body does not need them. Good luck to you. Rhonda

Good for you!!!!!!! I quit many years ago, before getting pregnant! But I was never a heavy smoker. You can do it! A good friend of mine just quit...she used Chantix and it worked for her and many other people she knows. I'm trying to get my Mom to use it now. Maybe look into that. I know she said it seemed expensive, but what Cigarettes are cheap! And it only took her three months and she doesn't crave them at all!

You can do it!
Remember, you are worth it!

Dear 45...quitting smoking is the hardest thing you will probably ever do. It is an addiction much like heroin. This is said not to overwhelm you but to put it in perspective. I smoked for over 30 yrs...quitting numerous times. EVERY night I went to bed...I swore I wouldn't smoke the next morning. EVERY morning I lit up. No amount of coaxing, bribes or scare tactics from loved ones motivated me enough to face it.
One year I got a bladder infection...had never had one. It was extremely painful. The Dr that treated me said that was what cancer of the bladder felt like...a cancer often attributed to smoking. I NEVER picked up another cigarette EVER. It was fear that finally motivated to make the commitment and hard work to maintain it.
I have such an addictive personality I knew I wasn't one of those casual smokers who could enjoy it while out socially. I knew one drag would send me back. I had to quit COLD TURKEY. For me...patches, gums etc didn't work. It was really difficult, not so much for any physical pain but the HABIT of smoking...when I talked on the phone, had my coffee, relaxed in the evening.
For me...it was an oral fixation. I also didn't know what to do with my hands. Interestingly, I also learned that it kept me from facing people and stressful or painful issues and/or relationships...smoking or a smoke screen removed me from people and issues. So, for me...the issues were facing my shadows and dealing with them.
It has been 11 yrs since I quit...I DO NOT crave them like some people say. I did gain a lot of weight...in fact most of what I am losing now. This is said to let you beware of adding hobbies, exercises...healthy diversions and habits to substitute. When I quit...I also lost my job, had two close relatives pass on and my grandson (2 1/2 yrs) was Dx. with terminal brain cancer. There were a lot of stressful issues to deal with at the same time. Hopefully...this is not your case. After all this rambling...what I want to mainly say is do it now. Find out WHY you smoke and work on that.
I wish you success. There are many here to encourage you. Be brave, be strong, be kind to yourself. I prayerfully wish you wellness and affirm your success. emoticon Yessss, you can do it. Donna

You can do it!!!! You are strong enough to overcome this addiction!!!! emoticon

Every time you want to buy a pack of cigs, put that money in a clear jar where you can see it piling up. Every 5 consecutive days that you're smoke free, use that money to take yourself out for a manicure on your smell- and stain-free hands. Or take the grandkids out to lunch and a movie. Buy some flowers that will scent the house--you'll be able to smell them now!

For this kind of thing, I'm a believer in an immediate (more or less) reward. That money FORMERLY spent on cigs will get you so much more!

You can do, we're hear with an ear if you need it.

Hugs,
Lynn

WOW 45NReady how awesome that you are in such a brilliant place to have the inner strength to quit smoking.

Remember to visualise and feel how life will be smoke free. Think of the tastes and smells that will return, the money saved on cigarettes that can be spent on your grandchildren or another goal you have, how much easier it will be to exercise with clean clear lungs and the health that is returning to your body with every breathe of fresh air.

Every time that you don't have a cigarette you are one step closer to success. Place a motivating picture in the places around your home that you used to have a cigarette the most and associate new positive things with those places.

Good luck and remember we are all here to help

Beth you said it yourself, NEVER GIVE UP!

Don't set such high standards and punish yourself if you don't do it perfectly. You are off to a GREAT start by reaching out and accepting your weaknesses out loud. That right there takes a lot of guts, all you have to do right now is do what my kids tell me to do, "Get over it mom, stop reading all the ways of making things happen and just go make em happen".
If others can do it you can too! I believe in you, now you just have to believe in yourself and you'll be over the hump in no time. Find another habit, like needlepoint emoticon or take some art lessons, or ballroom dancing, that's an amazing experience by the way, or go kayaking once a week in a team, you won't get different results by doing the same things, so think outside of the box.

We're here for you, holler when you need us

Best of luck,
@nit@ emoticon emoticon

( again not sure if this is ok to post here - my apologies if I should not )

I am going to quit smoking !

My set quit date is Monday the 27th !

and I AM SCARED TO DEATH OF FAILURE !
Really I am !

To picture me not smoking is like picturing myself with a missing limb.
I know that is pathetic - I know !

I have smoked for 32 years off and on and for the last 25 years non stop - with 1 quit of 9 days in there.

I am so very aware of all the health issues, the cost, the smells etc etc and I want to quit - ok truthfully I wish I could keep smoking - kind of like I wish I could keep drinking pepsi and lose weight..... but I want to be healthy and I want to be a role model to my grandchildren who are BEGGING me to quit.

Yes even the picture of their precious faces being so sad if I don't do this, I am still so very afraid I won't be successful.

I have the quit gum and bought like 200 mini lollipops to suck on.

I have not told anyone yet that I am quiting. I have announced it so many times before and never made it past a few hours.

Sorry I just needed to tell someone that I am quiting and I am scared.

ANY tips, advice etc towards this being a successful quit would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the ear :)
Beth
