Neeta is right! I just make white chicken chili last weekend. I make black bean Pica De Gallo and we eat that with everything. You can even put black beans in brownies! I haven't tried it yet... I was talking to somebody who bought the book by Jerry Seinfeld's wife...can't think of the name.

Soups are the easiest to make with all kinds of legumes or split ones. I do have an Indian cook book on line if you want to check out lentils with spinach. Yum!

On the topic of legumes -- anyone have any good suggestions for recipes on these?

And I'm enjoying my nice protein shake right now :-)

I'm finding it hard to meet the protein requirements, but at the same time am totally jazzed by the benefits of getting it in. I'm making progress and have increased my #'s quite a lot. And seen wt loss for the first time in a while.
I'm not vegetarian, but not that much of a meat eater either. I'm a little sick of it already after having it 2x a day! I do love fish and have added that, legumes, PNB, nuts and soy. Maybe I'll give the shakes a try. AM snack is the hardest. I am doing well waking up with that 16 oz. of water before bkfst, but chicken at 10am?? I don't think I can stomach that one:)

The protein shake that I drink is a vegetable protein...yellow peas. It is vegan certified.

I typically struggle with protein as well but b/c I follow a Vegan diet... I have weaned off of dairy not too long ago and really love the way my body feels... But I am often left with this protein deficit on most days. Sometimes I dont want to eat too many nuts b/c of the amount of calories. And I am not too crazy about "SOY PROTEIN" formulas b/c of the soy isolates that are not too good for you... (those are more processed, think of ummm white rice or white sugar lots of man processing) So I do eat a lot of tofu, beans, and peanut butter , I admit on most days I do fall under the recommended value.

The basic recommendation is 30% protein, 45% complex carbs and no more than 25% good fats!

Yes, it can be hard to get protein, which is why I supplement with a protein shake.

Some of the things I use for my protein sources are: chicken, fish, egg whites, venison, lean beef, pork tenderloin, turkey and unsalted nut (almonds, walnuts)

Hope that helps!

Thanks for that fact Lisa. I'm trying to add protein to every meal but running out of ideas. I just cooked up a few chicken breasts to have on hand for some this week.

Protein is harder for the body to digest than simple carbs. In fact, for every 100 calories of protein you consume, you burn off 20 calories as heat during digestion, as opposed to only 10 per 100 calories of carbohydrates. By eating protein at each meal, you take advantage of the thermogenic effect of your food and help create the calorie deficit needed to lose weight. (Clean Eating Magazine)
