For some reason my yesterday's work out is in January 1st and nothing in 12/31. Neither could I edit to correct the mistake. Did this happen to anyone else? Anyways, I forced myself to catch up to yesterday's performance (sorry couldn't - so, entered today's exercise in for yesterday!)

It was inspiring to try!! LOL.

Hey everyone. Would you mind praying for us. We were in a bad car accident today. A car was passing us on a two lane country road and they came over on us before they fully passed us. They hit the drivers side of the front of the car, then came across the front of our car (their passenger side) then up our passenger side and into a bank of trees. I don't know much more than that because I was unconsious until the EMT's arrived and took both carloads to the hospitals.

The kids are ok, I have a sprained shoulder and Joey has stitches in his knee, a hyperextened neck and hurt his back and shoulders. We were really lucky.

I'll post some pics on the sparkpage soon...

Right now I am just nervous about the rest of this - the accident report, insurance, replacing the car, etc.

All because someone was is WAY too much of a hurry to get where they were going... It only takes a second to change your life forever - thankfully we were ok.

Hug your family and buckle up!!!!

Ms Neeta......where are your final totals?????? I think you be the winner! LOL

As far as the PIF....I don't know how to do that...it seems some no longer want it part of the challenge...yet there are those of us who like to post them. We can give it a try this month...putting it in another thread and see how many actually follow through. For me it has become a habit! If it doesn't work out...we can always go back to keeping it part of the challenge!

What does everybody think?

Well its fun to learn about different traditions.
Ewwww! Left overs on my table except for some fresh veggies. DH wants me to relax. No good luck foods here.

For Indians January new year is just a western style calendar new year. New year traditions were and still are followed according to old traditional living - Farmers and Priests have either a lunar or solar new year in March-April. Businessmen and soldiers /kings etc. have at Festival of Lights (Diwali) day which falls either October or November.

I love the fact that spark is global just like America and with all the countries following suit.

Happy New year everyone!

Lisa, love the idea of PIF and challenge on two different threads! However, to participate on a regular basis, what is the motivation, as in points; for PIF or is one needed?

Be sure to eat some of those "good luck" foods today (whatever they are in your part of the world!) We'll be sure to include some Black Eyed Peas (and other stuff!) in our extended family lunch today - what do you have as your traditional New Years lunch???

I can make the PIF a different thread...maybe more people on the team will read them who don't want to participate in the challenge...

I will work on getting the challenge ready in the next day or so!

Thanks everybody for sticking with this!

KT forgive me Hon, I love PIF's it is a lot of work, boy do I know and can't imagine how you guys that work full time manage to find the time to look it up. I totally, absolutely LOVE reading them!

Here's something totally different from me today!

I love America, my home sweet home and here are some great retorts by ordinary US citizens like you and I. Don't get me wrong - I am not a Bush fan, however, its great how these fellas handled being teased for Bush follies!

There is also a link to my motherland's (where I was born) music - national anthem of India by all the famous vocalists and musicians.

When in England at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by
the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of
'empire building' by George Bush. He answered by saying, "Over the years,
the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great
peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we
have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return."

It became very quiet in the room.

******************************************
******************

Then there was a conference in France where a number of international
engineers were taking part, including French and American. During a break
one of the French engineers came back into the room saying "Have you heard
the latest dumb stunt Bush has done? He has sent an aircraft carrier to
Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What does he intend to do, bomb them?"

A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly: "Our carriers have three
hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are nuclear
powered and can supply emergency electrical power to shore facilities;
they have three cafeterias with the capacity to feed 3,000 people three
meals a day, they can produce several thousand gallons of fresh water from
sea water each day, and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in
transporting victims and injured to and from their flight deck.. We have
eleven such ships; how many does France have?"

Once again, dead silence.

****************************************
*********************

A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included
Admirals from the U.S., English, Canadian, Australian and French Navies.
At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large group of
Officers that included personnel from most of those countries. Everyone
was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a French
admiral suddenly complained that, whereas Europeans learn many languages,
Americans learn only English. He then asked, "Why is it that we always
have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?'
Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied "Maybe it's because the
Brits, Canadians, Aussies and Americans arranged it so you wouldn't have
to speak German".

You could have heard a pin drop.

I am definitely in for a new challenge. I agree with everything Nita says, but it gets difficult for me to find PIFs. Maybe that could be a different team challenge or thread?

And trust me Nita-I'm not giving up! The scale wasn't my friend a few days ago either and with a big party tonight ... we'll see. I gotta get my butt in gear!!!

Thanks DM.

Lisa, I better stay on top of it 'cause I know Jeninrussia is in the lead for a fact:) And, I am happy for her. I love being motivated by Jen and KT which reminds me KT - Resignation NOT accepted.

Here are some more of my thoughts: ( I did e-mail you before)-
,
I do want a new challenge also where we are held accountable with daily postings. I am now taking my vitamins regularly, yet would appreciate this included. RAOK - unnecessary. Love the eating clean challenge of points of 50%, 75% and 100%. Love the exercise portion also.

I remember KT suggested buddy challenge. Don't recall what I suggested - hahahahaha:)

Skip the listing of snacks, if we can stick to clean eating portions for the day.

Total cups of water??

Would be nice if we can track our points for Spark America challenge.

Have a wonderful New Year, everyone!

Staying Fit on the Road
By Joe Decker
For Active.com

Balancing a daily workout with your job, personal life and family is a constant struggle. This can be especially hard if you are required to travel for work. But traveling can be fun. You get to see lots of different cities and the best part is that you don't have to sacrifice your workout program.

Many hotels and motels realize that business travelers these days don't just want to sit around and order expensive room service. For instance, the Hilton Hotel now offers "health-fit rooms" which have exercise equipment inside the room.

If you're not lucky enough to stay in one of these "health-fit rooms," don't despair. Most hotels have a fitness center. It used to be that hotel gyms had just a few pieces of rusty old bicycles in a converted storage room. I remember trying to work out in some of these gyms. A few still had posters of Charles Atlas on the wall. What a challenge that was!

Things have changed. Nowadays, hotel gyms usually offer modern strength training and cardio equipment and sometimes even have personal training as well as yoga and spinning classes.

Before you book your hotel, call or check the hotel's website to see what kind of fitness facilities are provided. If there's no gym on the premises, the hotel may have an arrangement with a nearby fitness club. To find the best hotel gyms in the city you're going to, check out this website: www.fitforbusiness.com.

If your hotel just doesn't have a gym or you enjoy the privacy of working solo here are some simple ways you take your workout anywhere on the road.

Outdoor Workout: If you can't find a hotel with a gym, try to book a hotel near a park or recreational area. Go for an exhilarating run or walk. That will get your endorphins going first thing in the morning and get you pumped for the day's meetings. I prefer going for an early morning run while mixing in the circuit below. All you need is a picnic bench and a positive attitude.

Space-saver Circuit: This circuit doesn't involve any equipment, just your own body weight. Start with a short warm-up by marching in place or doing jumping jacks for three minutes. Then do one set of 10-50 reps--depending on your current fitness level--of push-ups, alternating lunges, dips, squats and sit-ups/crunches. If you're up for it, repeat the circuit two or three times. I like to do a descending pyramid or 50-40-30-20-10 of the above exercises. Believe me--this will really get your heart rate up and work your muscles.

Bring A Video: Most hotel rooms have DVD/VCR machines. Bring your favorite fitness or yoga video with you. I'm in the process of putting together workout videos for this purpose. Keep checking my website at www.Joe-Decker.com.

Remember to be prepared to try different routines and exercises when you travel. You'll have to be flexible. If the hotel gym doesn't have the elliptical trainer you normally use, try something else. If you're used to lifting free weights and the gym only has machines, try them. Changing up your normal workout routine is actually a good thing. But there's no excuse for not working out.

ROAST STUFFED PORK TENDERLOIN (Tosca Reno)
Pork tenderloin is a delicious and lean source of protein. Preparing it according to this recipe makes it a perfect special Sunday entrée. Add steamed veggies and baked sweet potatoes and you've got a meal. Don't like pork? Use boneless turkey breast instead.

INGREDIENTS

1/2 cup / 125 ml cooked broccoli
1/4 cup / 60 ml finely chopped parsley
1/2 cup / 125 ml breadcrumbs (use gluten-free bread if desired)
1/4 cup / 60 ml fine oat bran (uncontaminated)
1/3 cup / 80 ml chopped walnuts
1/3 cup / 80 ml finely chopped apricots
2 Tbsp / 30 ml water or low sodium chicken stock (gluten free if necessary)
2 pork tenderloins (or one large turkey breast)
1 Tbsp / 15 ml black peppercorns, coarsely chopped
1 tsp / 5 ml dried sage
1 tsp / 5 ml dried rosemary
1 tsp / 5 ml dried thyme
Sea salt

METHOD

In a medium bowl combine broccoli, bread crumbs, oat bran, walnuts, parsley, chopped apricots and 2 tablespoons / 30 ml water or low-sodium chicken stock. Mix well and set aside.
Place pork tenderloins (or turkey breast) on cutting board and butterfly them - cut them in half lengthwise almost all the way through but not quite. Using the blade of a large wide knife, such as a cleaver, flatten the pork tenderloins. Spoon the stuffing into each of the tenderloins or turkey if using.
Fold one side over the other and tie with kitchen twine, starting at the end of the tenderloin or turkey breast. Sprinkle with dried herbs, black peppercorns and sea salt. Place in shallow casserole dish. Bake in preheated 350°F / 177°C oven for 25 to 40 minutes, or until a meat thermometer reads 160°F / 71°C. Remove meat from oven and cover with foil. Let stand for 5 minutes.
Serve pork or turkey with unsweetened applesauce. It is delicious!

OMG y'all - I just jumped on the scale tonight and IT WAS NOT PRETTY!!! I noticed my clothes were getting tighter (and thats my main way of judging my success) but I didn't like what I saw.

I am not changing the slider until Jan 1, so hopefully there was some water weight in there (haha)we shall see!

Hope you girls are doing better than I apparently did! Needless to say, I don't think I met my December goal of maintaining within 5 pounds...

Here's to a better January! (I have WORK to do that month! mea culpa!!!)

Hey everyone! I'm still alive, I just fell off the spark universe for awhile. Been doing well with exercise, but not so much on the eating (now that I can actually eat again!) I haven't been keeping track of the challenge stuff, but am doing my best. I hope you all had a great holiday! I am so looking forward to 2008!!!

Clean Eating - ORGANIC FOOD
The National Organic Program

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has put in place a set of national standards that food labeled "organic" must meet, whether it is grown in the United States or imported from other countries. After October 21, 2002, when you buy food labeled "organic," you can be sure that it was produced using the highest organic production and handling standards in the world.

What is organic food?

Organic food is produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations. Organic meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products come from animals that are given no antibiotics or growth hormones. Organic food is produced without using most conventional pesticides; fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge; bioengineering; or ionizing radiation. Before a product can be labeled "organic," a Government-approved certifier inspects the farm where the food is grown to make sure the farmer is following all the rules necessary to meet USDA organic standards. Companies that handle or process organic food before it gets to your local supermarket or restaurant must be certified, too.

Is organic food better for me and my family?

USDA makes no claims that organically produced food is safer or more nutritious than conventionally produced food. Organic food differs from conventionally produced food in the way it is grown, handled, and processed.

When I go to the supermarket, how can I tell organically produced food from conventionally produced food?

You must look at package labels and watch for signs in the supermarket. Along with the national organic standards, USDA developed strict labeling rules to help consumers know the exact organic content of the food they buy. The USDA Organic seal also tells you that a product is at least 95 percent organic.

Single-ingredient foods

Look for the word "organic" and a small sticker version of the USDA Organic seal on vegetables or pieces of fruit. Or they may appear on the sign above the organic produce display.

The word "organic" and the seal may also appear on packages of meat, cartons of milk or eggs, cheese, and other single-ingredient foods.

Foods with more than one ingredient

The following photo shows examples of the labels that may be used on a wide variety of products that use organic ingredients.

Will I find the USDA Organic seal on all 100 percent organic products, or products with at least 95 percent organic ingredients?

No. The use of the seal is voluntary.

How is use of the USDA Organic seal protected?

People who sell or label a product "organic" when they know it does not meet USDA standards can be fined up to $11,000 for each violation.

Does natural mean organic?

No. Natural and organic are not interchangeable. Other truthful claims, such as free-range, hormone-free, and natural, can still appear on food labels. However, don't confuse these terms with "organic." Only food labeled "organic" has been certified as meeting USDA organic standards.

For more detailed information on the USDA organic standards, visit our web site at http://www.ams.usda.gov/nop call the National Organic Program at 202-720-3252, or write USDA-AMS-TM-NOP, Room 4008 S. Bldg., Ag Stop 0268, 1400 Independence, SW, Washington, DC 20250.

I have been eating Kumquats and not tracking since I do not know the nutritional information and Spark did not have it either. Today I googled and found out! Here's my PIF on Kumquats for all of you this special fruit lovers.

Kumquats are low in calories, and a surprising source of calcium. They have some B vitamins for healthy skin, nerves and muscles. They are an excellent source for vitamin C. They also provide an excellent amount of fiber when eaten skin and all.

For those that do not know what Kumquats are:
Kumquats resemble a tiny orange, with a rind that is deliciously sweet, though the pulp is puckery-sour. They are usually eaten raw, as a whole except the seeds. They make a striking garnish, especially when used with the leaves still attached. As with other citrus fruit, kumquats can be candied, marinated, prepared as marmalade, added to fruit salad, poached, or preserved whole.

Selection and storage:
Kumquats can appear in markets from October (at the earliest) through June, and during some unpredictable off-season times as well. Considered a winter fruit, their golden color is a welcome sight. Select fruits that are firm, not soft. Because of their skin, they tend to spoil more easily than thicker skinned fruits such as oranges. Kumquats will last a few days at room temperature or for up to two weeks in the refrigerator.

From Dr. Ian Smith

Reduce your stress.

Don't worry, be happy! That's important when it comes to losing weight. Several studies have shown that stress leads to all types of bad habits, especially when it comes to eating. If you reduce your stress, you have a better chance of being successful on an eating program and losing weight. Try meditating, doing yoga, listening to your favorite music, walking, reading a book, or any other activity that helps you relax. Stress reduction is also good for your cardiovascular system, so your heart will thank you as well!

Creating a healthier lifestyle stretches beyond diet and exercise. You have to pay special attention to your mind and soul as well. Make room in your busy schedule and find a moment for yourself. It doesn't have to be a lot of time- you can create an extra 10 to 20 minutes in your day by waking up a little earlier, have lunch on your own or even delay turning on the TV until you've had time to clear your mind.

You can manage your stress. Be intentional and find time to relax, and you'll gain a stronger perspective on what is truly important in your life. Best ~ Dr. Ian

My PIF is a couple of jokes: Not a good day for me so, I have been reading jokes for laughter, the best medicine:)

I liked these cute jokes because I myself have lived thru these with my own children when they were young :)

As my five-year-old son and I were heading to McDonald's one day, we passed a car accident. Usually when we see something terrible like that, we say a prayer for whoever might be hurt, so I pointed and said to my son, "We should pray." From the back seat I heard his earnest voice: "Dear God, please don't let those cars block the entrance to McDonald's."

-- Sherri Leard

As I was nursing my baby, my cousin's six-year-old daughter, Krissy, came into the room. Never having seen anyone breast feed before, she was intrigued and full of all kinds of questions about what I was doing. After mulling over my answers, she remarked, "My mom has some of those, but I don't think she knows how to use them."

-- Lois Singer

Working as a pediatric nurse, I had the difficult assignment of giving immunization shots to children. One day I entered the examining room to give four-year-old Lizzie her needle. "No, no, no!" she screamed. "Lizzie," scolded her mother, "that's not polite behavior."

With that, the girl yelled even louder, "No, thank you! No, thank you!"

-- Carol Vartanian

Our family was dazzled by the sights and the bustling crowds during a visit to Manhattan. "This is the city that never sleeps," I told my eleven-year-old daughter.

"That's probably because there's a Starbucks on every corner," she observed.

-- Linda Foley

Hello everyone!! I am having the best time with my family here in Dallas! It has been busy though!!

All is well - I am now at 50 pounds lost!! We are leaving the morning of the 30th to go to New York city for 5 nights before heading back to Russia. It will be hard - we have both said that going back this time will be the hardest ever after spending such a wonderful time with our family.

I have been doing very well with my excercise and even eating clean - even on vacation!!!

I have missed all of you and can not wai to to start reposting daily when we return to Russia

Hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas!!

God bless - Hugs -

Jen

From Dr. Ian
Be creative with your exercising . . .
You don't need a membership at the gym to lose weight. Look around and be creative with exercises you can do at home or in the neighborhood. Equipment at the gym, if used appropriately, can help you burn calories quicker. But let's not forget that we're in this fight to establish long-term, healthy lifestyle changes. Not to mention, everyone is not in the financial position to join a gym.

So, what are some additional ways we can incorporate exercise into our lives? Try walking and talking with a friend or co-worker instead of meeting over the phone or at a table. Play with your kids at the park or set up regular pick-up games on the basketball courts. And don't forget about swimming- one of the best exercises there is for burning calories and toning up.

There are all kinds of physical activities you can do throughout the day that will burn calories and keep you on the path to losing weight. Be creative.

Today is a phenomenal day!

December 27 PIF

This comes from a woman body builder...just proves everything we are doing here works!

In my mind, the importance of a good diet cannot be overstated. If someone who was out of shape were to make only one change in his or her life, it should be a diet change. Diet can get you 75% there. Of course, changing to a healthy lifestyle would not be complete without exercise; there are so many health benefits to even small increases in activity. (Also, I like the curves that muscles add!)

I never ate much fast food - burgers, fries and soda … but before my personal transformation I pretty much ate what I wanted, when I wanted. When I started working out, I kept a food journal and my personal trainer gave me some guidance in my food choices. Six months or so went by and I had stopped gaining weight but I wasn’t losing it either.

It wasn’t until I took matters into my own hands and changed my diet, that I saw results. When I switched to eating “clean, I dropped the pounds and found and I could even eat more! The term eating clean is thrown around a lot. When I was new to this I wanted a definition, so here it is …

Eating clean is eliminating empty calories from processed foods and refined sugars. Eat clean means eating lean meat, whole grains, and good fats. If it didn’t grow on a tree/bush/vine/in the dirt or come directly from an identifiable animal, don’t eat it.

This means shopping the outer aisles of the grocery store … the produce and the meat section; stray to an inside aisle to pick up whole grains like oatmeal, brown rice, and wild rice. In some stores, you can also find barley and quinoa.

Eating more - at least five times a day - gets your metabolism stoked. It helps you to burn more fat and keeps your energy (and insulin) levels consistent throughout the day. Each meal should be a mixture of protein and “good carbs; the carbs help the protein get utilized for muscle building, and protein helps the carbs get utilized for fuel.

Now that I’ve been eating clean for a couple of years, it is part of my life. I LIKE eating clean and would not do it any other way! My taste buds have changed over time so that I can taste the sweetness in vegetables and I don’t crave refined sugars (that is, until I have some and then watch out, I go in a sugar frenzy and just want more, more, more!).

I am a little obsessed with food, I’ve got to admit. It seems like I spend a lot of time, buying it, preparing it, eating it, thinking about eating, and dreaming up new recipes and things I’d like to try.

In reality, I like beating myself but competition runs in my blood perhaps having been in sales field. Considering how I do not know how tomorrow will be I love dreaming. It's fun to overtake KT (during her handicap with dental surgery), to dream of beating Jeninrussia (when she does not post),waiting anxiously to see how quickly Denyse catches up with me ;-), where Sol is, in spite of being a party belle, and finally, but most importantly, waiting for some people to give themselves the points they deserve having earned them and hoping there will be more challengers on each challenge. Do you think this challenge shows some aspects of our personalities since we are bonding and getting to know each other...... here?

Thanks very much Lisa. Love you too darling. I am watching you :) LOL. emoticon

Size 4?? hmmmmmmm WoooHoooo! I don't think I have ever fitted into a size 4 as an adult!!

December 26 - From Dr. Ian Smith

Dr. Ian's Weekly Tip
Self-control.

If you want to stop eating a large serving of food, then cut it in half. On the half that you’re not going to eat, sprinkle something you don’t like such as pepper, ketchup, mustard—anything that will ruin the flavor and stop you from eating it.

The point is this: build up your self-control. Ruining the flavor may be extreme, but it will help you succeed as it proves that you do not need a pile of food to get full. And, in the long run, exercising your self-control will generate a lifestyle change by creating habits you can rely on for many years down the road.

Best ~ Dr. Ian
