If your hiking boots don't have ankle support, you can always get an ankle brace at the drug store. I got one when I sprained my ankle and it was a good way to get the support when I needed it.

Thanks for all the support on help with exercises and a sprained ankle. I am glad that the ankle is not that badly sprained. I was actually able to walk to work today...2 miles with minimal pain. I have been working the muscles with a stationary bike, many at home body weight workouts, and a couple swimming sessions. I am hoping to hit the trails in a month. I do know my ankle is still to sore/weak to hit the uneven terrain. Don't want to risk re-spraining it. THANKS!

If you can't put weight on your ankle, try exercise from a chair, leg lifts etc. I couldn't believe what an exercise I got when I sat in on a class at my Mom's senior's home and most of them were from a sitting position. That way, you'll keep your leg muscles in shape.

I broke my ankle 3 years ago, and aside from hobbling around as much as I could on crutches, I got to the pool when I could (I couldn't drive for a few months, so even that was limited) and during recovery I also got on the recumbant.

If it's not too bad a sprain, you can do some light training on it, I ran a half marathon about a month after spraining my ankle (I had already signed up for it, and was in the middle of training for a marathon I ended up not running) and although it was slower than I wanted, it was not that hard to run (I mean it didn't hurt all that much). I think you can let the pain be your guide, and follow you doctors advice if you saw one. My doctor said as long as I could tolerate the pain, I could do the activity.

When I was a teen, I broke my ankle in over twenty places and am missing some bones. There are times when it gets cranky and in that respect is like a sprained ankle.

If I have to keep weight off of it:

My first choice is swimming because of the great cardio work out. If my ankle is especially sore, then I'll use a buoy and lock my anles together.

If you can get your hands on a kayak, that's an awesome work out with no legs.

I'll use a bench and weights, working hard and long. I work on core by crossing my ankles off the bench, then doing flys, triceps and bench presses. I do it cardio style. Then I'll flip to my stomach and work my back muscles, trying to make it as cardio as possible.

Push ups, on the floor, on a ball, you name it, it's good.

Those are my top three. I have tons more if you tell me the things you like to do.

Water aerobics! They're wonderful! They're fun, they work your entire body but since you're supported by the water, you won't injure anything. It's also fun meeting the other ladies in the classes. I can't recommend it highly enough! (Extra added attraction: if you really do the work outs, you can burn over 500 calories in a half hour!)

Definitely a good call on swimming as well - best of luck!

Thanks, I will hit up the exercise bike when I head to the gym in about a week after letting this ankle rest. I have decided to also try out swimming. A co-worker suggested that it would be nice because I could just focus on arm and back strength. Plus, the added buoyancy of the water will help alleviate any pain I feel during exercise.

So sorry to hear you sprained your ankle. I hope that you have a speedy recovery.
Good luck!!
I unfortunately don't have any nuggets of wisdom for you. The last time I sprained my ankle, I wasn't worried about exercising. emoticon

I have found that I can normally start using the exercise bike pretty soon after a an ankle sprain, and while it's not the same as real biking or getting outside, it definitely can help you maintain some of your endurance!

Good luck!

For those of you that have injured yourself early this season and are stuck dealing with pain, what do you do for exercise? I have sprained my ankle and cannot continue my trail running and it is really bumming me out. Please pass on any info that you can so I don't lose the training I have already put in this year. I really don't want to lose the strength in my thighs and calves after all my hard work.
