First week of April--kicking each side and back. So here's the drill. 4 times 150 all kicking without a board. Each 150 broken by 50s as 50 on right site, 50 on left side, and 50 on back. Odd 150's are flutter kick and even 150's are dolphin kick. Tough, but the dolphin kicking really steps up and strengthens your core! CMY (Carol)

For this week, a dry land exercise to strengthen the core. Plank! Hold the plank for 30 seconds, rest 10 seconds, hold another 30 seconds. Get down and do this 5 times a day for the rest of the week. It is harder than you think. (Don't know how, you can look this up in the exercises here on SparkPeople.) CMY (Carol)

Tried and true freestyle drill. This week is the fingertip drill that teaches you to get your elbow high during the recovery phase as well as perfect entry into the water. 4X50 with 10 bobs between 50's. When you recover over the water, let the very tips of your fingers drag in the water along your side until your arm forms a 90 degree angle forward, then drive your fingertips forward into the water. Have fun, CMY (Carol)

New week, new drill. Let's do a backstroke drill. This drill is a dry land drill and is fun and not so easy, but teaches the underwater portion of the arm stroke. You will need a ball, like a tennis ball. Stand with feet hips width apart. In one hand hold the ball straight overhead in the water entry position. Throw the ball at your feet. The ball should land next to the same foot as the hand that is up. Repeat 9-19 times. Okay, now when you swim backstroke the next time, remember how that felt and do the same thing.

You can repeat this drill daily until you get the feeling and are capturing that feeling in the water too.

Have fun! Carol (CMY)

Drill for March 6th through 12th--crawl with underwater scull

Do 2 lengths, rest 15 seconds and repeat.

Instead of your normal overwater stroke, place your hands under your belly and scull while you kick. It is not as easy as you think and helps you feel the water on your hands and arms.

For Feb 27-March 5th, how about a breaststroke drill. This first breaststroke drill is one of the standard drills: double pull. So you only kick every other arm stroke. Goes like this--push off wall--take normal pull out and dolphin kick underwater--break the surface of the water--pull, kick, pull, pull, kick, pull--repeat to end of pool and do for 2 lenghts. Rest 10 seconds or 8 bobs and repeat for 2 more lengths.

The purpose of this drill is to strengthen your pull.

Hi Marysdan, I found a variation called 6-beat kick that has you kick in three positions: right side, front, left side. I hope this helps. Carol (CMY)

Hi Marysdan, on you side, your head should be resting in the water looking to the ceiling. Your bottom arm should be stretched out in front of you pointing at about the 10:00 position on the clock if 12:00 is at the surface. Your top arm should be comfortably resting on your side so you are in a good swimming body position (least amount of drag). Your body is perpendicular to the surface plane of the water. May see strange, but when we swim crawl or backstroke, we should be rotating towards this position so that we are maintaining an horizontal body position with as little body presented to the surface of the water as possible--aerodynamics. I will look around on U Tube to see if I can find any good videos showing this drill.... Carol (CMY)

BTW--good for you for trying this..... C

Ok, I tried it last night at the pool, but I'm not sure if I was doing it right. When you are kicking, is your head in or out of the water? What do your arms do while you are kicking? It definitely got some weird looks from my fellow swimmers.

Drill for Feb 20 through Feb 26:

Freestyle Drill - 8-beat kick

Roll completely onto your side and kick for 8 beats before your next pull. Pull through and rotate to your other side and kick for 8 beats. Repeat for 50 yards. Rest 10 second. Repeat for 50 more yards.

Purpose: Helps you learn to rotate your entire body and kick one foot on top of the other.

Hi Everyone, Sidney suggest having a Drill of the week challenge. Sounds like fun (the other suggestions sounded like fun too, I just didn't get going on them). Here is the drill for this week and it is for Butterfly (since I know Sidney is working on that).

Put on a pair of fins (not required, but surely helpful)
Do 4-8 25s with underwater recovery (thats right, pull through like you would normally and then figure out how to get your arms back to start without raising them out of the water--its sort of like breaststroke recovery, but from way back by your sides)

This drill builds your arm muscles!

Next week, first poster of a drill sets the drill for the week.
