Congratulations RHYNIC. Is it you in the photo?

Thanks EJOHNCHAT, it has been interesting to learn about body fat, aerobic and anaerobic exercises and how they affect body fat.
In Real Age there was an article adiving to exercise 30 min rest 20 and exercise 30 more min, aparently that increases burning fat, as well as doing cardio and then strength exercises.in that order the same day. I'll try it. I would like really to lower my current body fat 5%.

John - I was telling my hubby about the low reading. :-) last night so I took it again...22.2% pretty much the same as on Wednesday.

Sounds great to me.

so what will next challenge be like. If possible can we include a bit of weight loss. I am not asking that in order to succeed you would NEED to lose weight, but I am interested in maybe going down a few pounds.

BTW - that fat percentage is back to what I was this last spring, and my husband even commented that my 'love handles' had reduced in size. Man, you got to love it. :-)

thank for the challenge...this was really great.

oh, I almost forgot about this.

I just came back from a 60 min. run...actually a 58 minute 10k. I am pretty happy with it. :-)

my weight was 132.2 but I never took my body fat reading today. I will in a bit. I never hydrated while running and I drank wine all day yesterday so I have a feeling the reading will be off this week.

I just took a reading 22.2% body fat.

I really don't know how much I can trust that little machine.

With all that I have eaten over the last couple days and I have missed 2 days of cardio and no strength training at all in over a week...I find it hard to believe that I would have lost body fat.

I bet if I do it again later in the day I will get a reading in the 23% range.

I'm with you John, I hate the wind! Gail sounds like you had a great run, good for you! We've been editing photos all day for our e-Christmas card, so it's been a slugfest. We did get out yesterday for my first XC ski of the season and it was great, no wind, so I'm not complaining!

John - It would appear that I had much better weather today than you did. The sun was shinning here and not only were the winds light, but I also ran the whole run (13.32 miles) with the wind at my back. DH came and picked me up once I was done.

I read those articles...you know, I do intervals already, and I am planning on doing even more strength training in 2008 that I have been doing this year. sounds like I am on the right track.

Gail - Well done. I wish I could have joined you. But it is hard to get motivated even from a virtual point of view since it is howling outside with 25 F and gusts up to 50 mph.

MAMAOF3KIDDIES - I hope the articles help. A Spark Search on anaerobic brings up a bunch of articles.

No problem RHYNIC. It has very much been a learning experience for me. Next challenge will be totally based on trends. So the more data the better especially seeing as how there is so much variation in the numbers. I will use all the data you give me whether it be weekly, daily, twice a day, etc. So if you can ignore the daily data and wait for the trend analysis, it may work well for you to continue with the daily readings and post them all.

John

I have a very different 5% melt down problem.

I have a bowl full of chocolates and they were on an end table in the den, right next to the window. The sun came out and just like that...5% (if not more) melt down.

I wish it was that easy when it came to body fat.

It's encouraging to see my % bf actually went down from the start of this, I have been discouraged lately by my measurments, I just don't see the bf dropping despite the work I'm doing, but I guess I just didn't go back far enough! Probably tracking that daily in not that helpful!

Thanks again John for tracking this for us, I can't wait to see the next challenge!

I won't have access to my bf scale until Weds, so I'm posting that day.

I usually put on a couple lbs at 'that time of the month' and wouldn't you know it...weight day was on the day that I started.

But I also had a horrible week of eating...which is also common for me at this time. :-)

I will be willing and ready to re-start this after the Christmas. I am not exactly sure what all the rules will be, but I know I will want to lose a few lbs...and a few % of body fat.

So John, the answer to your question...I was up a couple of pounds from one morning to the next, I know it's fluid retention and I haven't weighed myself since so I don't know if it's still there or not.

Here's how I see this week's statistics. If there are any errors or updates, please advise. With the challenge ending on Christmas day, we have 5 days left.

EJOHNCHAT - Never made it to target weight. So didn't join this challenge but is up for the next one.

KAYOTIC Only one within 1% of starting weight and so by default winner is all four categories.
Starting - 132 lbs and 26.1% (34.45 lb)
Week 12 - 132.4 lbs and 25.7% (34.03 lb)
Weekly fat pounds gained - 0.42
Weekly % body fat gained - 1.21%
Since start fat pounds lost - 0.43
Since start % body fat lost - 1.23%

PUNCHILOUIE
Starting - 107.2 lbs and 27.8% (29.80 lbs)
Week 12 - 110.6 lbs and 28.4% (31.41 lbs) - Not within 1% of starting weight
Weekly fat pounds gained - 1.00
Weekly % body fat gained - 3.34%
Since start fat pounds gained - 1.61
Since start % body fat gained - 5.40%
Another tough week.

MAMAOF3KIDDIES - Started mid week 10 - Reached 5% goal but did not keep within 1% of target weight. emoticon emoticon emoticon on the fat loss. Keep up the good work. Just need to replace it with some muscle these last 5 days.
Starting - 132.5 lbs and 24.6% (32.60 lbs)
Week 12 - 130.0 lbs and 23.7% (30.81 lbs)
Weekly fat pounds lost - 1.14
Weekly % body fat lost - 3.51%
Since start fat pounds lost - 1.79
Since start % body fat lost - 5.48%

L.I.L.MOMMY - has reset target weight and will rejoin when new target is obtained.

RHYNIC
Starting - 132.8 lbs and 24.0% (31.87 lbs)
Week 11 - 134.2 lbs and 23.0% (30.87 lbs) - Not within 1% of starting weight
Weekly fat pounds gained - 0.86
Weekly % body fat gained - 2.67%
Since start fat pounds lost - 1.01
Since start % body fat lost - 3.16%
Do you measure yourself throughout the week? If so, do you see this kind of variation day to day? Or did you see a trend during the week that indicated that you were going to have this setback?

Yes, Christmas is the last day of the challenge. But it is Christmas. So post any day that week, whatever day seems reasonable and fair to you. I will post results when I get back from my family get together. That will be Sunday or Monday the week following, as I won't have internet access while away. Keep your eyes open for the new challenge. I will post it about the same time. I will probably send you a link to the thread so that you dont miss it.

I will work later today on this week's results. Now is time for Christmas shopping. Oh joy!!!

Grace and Peace,
John

EJOHNCHAT, thanks for the encouragement, I dont know what Im doing wrong, my diet is almost the same (I have diabetes so portions are a must and no snacking), and Im walking 10 miles per day (including 10K walk)and strength exercises and sculpting 3 times a week for 1 h. Im gaining weight and my blood sugar spikes. My waist and hips are 0.5in less than when we started, which is a positive sign, also one size down. Well, as you said well get the hang of it.
Christmas is the last day of the challenge, will we post that day which is Tuesday or Wednesday would be ok?
Im all for the new challenge in January.
Thanks a lot for your support.

I am happy to hear that this is going to continue. (I was planning on continuing anyway hehehe)

I also like the changes that will be made to the challenge. Although I am on maintenance I do allow myself a 5 lbs range. So this challenge sometime will put me in the 'not successful' range when really I feel I am doing great.

Also there are times that I wander if I could maintain my weight 5lbs lower. So far I have only made it to 125 for a few weeks around my 10k race in May. I was dealing with an injury and had not been running hard and although I was putting in workouts they were very short. I had also stopped weight training. I figure I lost muscles and not fat. I would like to try it again but keep the muscles and see if it will be easier to maintain.

John - make us proud, show us it's possible to enjoy mom's cooking and still lose fat. :-)

Sure. But as indicated below it won't be exactly the same thing. It will be very similar. I am thinking of calling it the "Winter Wake-Up to a 5% Leaner You." It will start Jan. 2nd with initial weight, %Body Fat and %Body Water. %Body Water will not be required data. I will ask competitors to provide it if they have it. But if not, I will use just the weight and %Body fat to calculate the results. So, what do you think?

For me it is chips and salsa. A bit easier on the calories but I make up for it by eating about 3 servings of each. I managed to stay away from them this week and was able to turn my weight gain around. I am on the shedding side. I still won't be at my 178 goal before starting the new challenge but I am going to design it so that even those of us wanting to sheds some more pounds can compete without too much advantage over those who are maintaining.
This weekend will be tough. I am spending the weekend at my home in Midland, Michigan. I always seem to put on a few pounds while traveling. But I was able to do 20 minutes each on the bike, elliptical and treadmill this morning at the hotel. That should help. And with snow on the ground here in Midland, I should get in some X-country skiing.
The 5% of the fat weight (which ends up being 5% of your % body fat when you maintain the same weight) was based on 5% weight loss challenge I was involved in that got me to my goal weight in August. 5% was a reasonable amount to shed in 13 weeks and basing the challenge on a percentage of our body weight put us all on a more "level playing field".

Grace and Peace,
John

Kayotic - 5% for sure is a longer term goal. And it might be a ways away if I don't set myself back on track...chip and dip had been the snack chip for 3 night this week. :-)

That's okay, I will have a better week coming.

Good going Gail!

I was thinking that 5% would really be too big a goal for such a short time frame, but the % of a % makes more sense. I'm w/ you though, Gail, I'd really like to lose body fat to be closer to 18% than 25%, but that is more long term. For now, I'll take what I can get!

according to John I have reached my 5%...but that's not really the 5% I am looking for. :-) I started at 24% and I would like my body fat down to 19% (that's the kind of 5% I would like.) hehehe

I weighed in this morning and I was over 1 pound down from the day before...I must have been dehydrated. I will see what tomorrow brings.

Body fat: 22.7

I feel like I am cheating. I weighed in and took my body fat reading this morning. I have just tried my body fat again and now it reads 23.5...that's a big difference. I am not sure which is the most accurate but I have chosen to go with the one that makes me feel better. I have also been taking readings during the week and it's been in the low 23's and high 22's.

all the other weeks I took it mid morning but couldn't this week because I was at work.

I will see what next week brings.

I've been pleasantly surprised this year to find it to be true, if I plan it out ahead of time, I stick to the plan. Last year I just showed up and pigged out, but the advance planning give me a focus and strategy to go with, and I feel more in control.

You are definitly not the only one w/ the party aversion, in fact one party I went to, we all commented on how little we like attending parties! It was like an "anti-party" party!

I am not much into party goer either. I thought I was the only one. I think I am to much of an introvert. :-)

I don't expect anyoe will be there who has finished a hundred mile race...but hey...there is no harm in hoping. I do expect to chat with a lady who has just qualified for the Boston Marathon. I think she will have a very interesting story considering she had to contend with 90km winds...gusting to 110km...head on for a good part to qualify.

Kayotic - all that you have said makes sense. And I think there will be a place in my mind that I will have to get to before the party to insure I do what you have suggested. If I decided ahead of time I will follow through.

Try focusing on the people and not so much the food. Not saying don't indulge a little, but if you plan ahead of time to have a small plate of your favorite cheese, (and whatever they serve there) with a glass of good wine, you will get a treat, not feel deprived, and then focus on the party aspect.

I took my sister to boot camp at the gym this morning and there was a woman there wearing a t-shirt from a 100 mile endurance race. I've been on that trail and was interested in the race. She actually finished, and we had a great conversation about it. Just think of all the fun conversations you can have at that party if there are runners there that have done things you have, or things you'd like to do! It will be fun to meet new, like-minded people!

That said, I really dislike parties, but this makes me want to go to one!

Kay - that is a lot of staying strong. You are going to have to have a very focused mind set. From reading your post you seem a lot like me. I think you will do well but if you don't you will have yourself back on track in no time.

I have a wine and cheese to go to next Friday. I have been wondering how I am going to tackle it. Hummm It's one of those things, I want to blend in, but not go over board. I hear there are going to be a lot of runners there, so I know the conversation will be good, and it will create a distraction from all the food which will be circulating.

I am not going to know a lot of people so that may pull me toward the distracting food. :-) this could go either way.

Well, even if you don't get a reaction out of that guy, you have given the rest of us something to think about, (again and again....)

I think you inspired me w/ the post workout fueling, even if I'm not doing much different, at least I know I'm doing everything I can. And I have been a lot better this week at staying away from the candy dishes at work. I just have to stay strong for the rest of the month! Let's see, at least 2 "occasions" per week thru New Years, that a lot of planning and staying strong to do!

Nope, that is not a picture of me...it might be a picture of the husband I dreamed about last night, but surely isn't a picture of the man I woke next to this morning. I keep telling my dh that I want a bowflex so he can have a bowflex body. so far he hasn't bought me one.

I posted that picture to tease a guy on the Road Runners Forum. :-) so far, if he has logged on he hasn't said anything...but I am not worried...he will. It sure has caught everyone else's attention. :-) i do expect he will pay me back.

Kayotic - you really had a great week. Congratulations. I am also very pleased with my results. For me it also has a lot to do with eating clean and exercising hard. I hope I can keep it up for a while longer.

all for now

Hey Gail, like the new pic, but I'm guessing it's not you, maybe your hubby?

I sometimes run holding a water bottle instead of wearing one. It does jostle too much to have the fannypack around my waist, but I can hold the bottle, and drink on occasion. Drives my boyfriend nuts, as he is a camel and never drinks. I mean never! I feel like I would die w/o a drink when I'm on a long workout, but it doesn't phase him at all.

Thanks for the rundown on the body water % punchielouie, it makes me feel really good about my %.

For bodyfat, I've seen different scales, but ususally below 18% for a woman is "athletic" and that's where I'd like to be! Below 12 % for a woman is not good, but right in between would be great. I think healthy is below 25%, but I could be wrong about that. I'm shooting for 18.

Wowie! Thanks ejohn, I had no idea it would look that good!

I weighed in again on my trainers scale, and I was down there too, thankfully, I had crept up to 24.5 on that one, from a low when I started of 23.5, but yesterday I was at 23.8. Not where I started, but improving. I'm really putting my efforts into eating cleanly, and I've been working out a lot, it's nice to see it show on the scale.

No it's not a great thing at all. It's a red flag signaling that I didn't properly hydrate. I should have more than likely ran with a sports drink, but it was only a 45 minute run and it was going to be a speedy run (at least to my standards) which make it much more difficult to drink.

Leads me to believe that next tempo run will have to be done carrying a sports drink. :-( I was liking the freedom of no belt around the waist, but I also want to run at my best.

one good things about the drink is that it actually helps replenish the water that your body has lost. So if I would suggest that if you eat that bar have it with some water.

I don't know what is the % of water in your body one should aim for. I know that I weight 132.8 this morning...I had a cup of coffee, a smoothie (1/2 cup yogurt,1/2 cup pomegranate juice, one banana, 3/4 cup mixed berries, and a kiwi. After the run I had a cup of milk with slim fast and a glass of water. Just before jumping in the shower I weighted myself and weight 131 something...more than a pound less than this morning...meaning that I used up a lot of water and all that I ate and drank did not replenish is.

Does anyone know what the norm is for body water % or pounds? Just curious.

So I bought the Slim Fast High Protein granola bars today (choc. chip) and had that after my 5 mile run. I think the granola bar "made" me feel fuller (because I was actually chewing it). So I think what I am going to do is on my 3 days/wk that I run once I get back into my car (since I've been doing it at the Y) I will have a shake or granola bar (going to alternate).

Both the drink & bars are 190 calories but like 15 grams of protein. Now if I can only find coupons for Slim fast (when you want them you can't find them, when you don't need them they are all in your face!).

Nice to hear the drink tastes good, how many calories in there? The glutamine I have is only 20 cal per svg, so I don't worry about that, but I always added my bar to my calories when I was tracking that. I do take it into consideration for my food for the day, but it's also a response to exercise, so I guess I figure the calorie burn probably covers the calorie load.

i think i depend on why you are taking in this drink. If it is as a recovery drink, than after a hard workout is all that you would need. Keep in mind that these drinks have a fair amount of calories and if you are using them like I am...drinking one after a workout to improve recovery so that I can have a better workout next time... plus still eating my regular lunch and dinner...you might find yourself with a calorie overload.

The Slim Fast drink tasted really good. Do you think I should have one every day after I workout or just on M, W, F (which is my days that I do my heavy cardio - usually 40 minutes of running, if not longer)? I'm also going to pick up the Slim Fast protein bars too and see which one holds me over longer -- the drink was really tasty though!

Oh, I wish it were true that I didn't have much body fat to lose! I would like to see 18%, but seem to keep creeping upward instead of downward. In any case, I realize my home scale is not that accurate, compared to the scale at the gym it's a couple % higher, but the gym scale has been going up as well, so that's why I think I need to look at my recent pattern and do something different.

I've gone from 23.5 to 24.5 on the gym scale, and I'm running anywhere from 25.3 to 26.7 on my home scale. I'm really looking for the trend to start downward!

We got in our run today, and I had a 1/2 a bar afterward, it's a pretty balanced bar, but almost 300 cals so I usually just have half unless I'm using it as a meal replacement.

Debi, you will have to let us know about the slim fast, I think Gail uses that too, I'm curious if the drinks are better/worse/same as the bars. I just like the convenience of bars.

Kayotic - You really seem to be doing all that is required to be at your best. This might be a silly question...could it be that really you don't have much body fat to lose?

Debi - you will have to let us know how this slim fast works for you.

I rode my stationary bike for 45 minutes today. I was planning on a strength training session afterwards. Well I did 10 push-up and I could feel how tired my body was. I don't think I was fully recovered from yesterday's interval run. I have a long run on taps for tomorrow and I rather have a good run tomorrow than a so-so strength training session today...so I called it quits.

I am so looking forward to Wednesday, just to see if I lost any body fat. I shouldn't put so much hope in this...I know this little device is not the most scientifically accurate.

I guess we'll just have to be virtual workout buddies!

I do ST twice a week. I was doing both with a trainer, but my trainer switched gyms, so I cut back to once a week. Better on my pocketbook, but I'm not as motivated to get a workout in w/out him. I'm trying though. I may try to bump it up to 3 times a week, just because the last time I dropped bodyfat, I was ST 4-5 days a week, it may be what I require to get it down. Then maybe I can just maintain on 2 days.

I get longer workouts on the weekend, like you, if I'm on a machine I don't work out as long, if I'm outside I can go for hours. We have been doing a lot of mountain biking lately, anywhere btwn 2-5 hrs at a time. I probably am underhydrating during those rides, but they are fun.

Kayotic = your workouts sound very similar to mine. I wish we were neighbors. I use my stationary bike 45 minutes 3 (sometimes only 2) days a week. I keep my heart rate at the same level as if I was on a long run. I run 3 times a week, the runs are at least 45 minutes...never longer if I am on the treadmil, but up to 8 miles if I am running outside...so those runs are longer. I do intervals and a tempo run for my first 2 runs, and a long run on the weekend. My long run is 90 minutes if I run it on the treadmill but could go 2 or 2 1/2 hours if I am running outside.

on my tempo run and intervals I will run with no sport drink it the runs are less than 60 minutes. But I will always drink from one before I run and after I come back.

I have also started doing some strength training. that is fairly new to me, and I do it on my cycling days. I hope that will also help with the body fat.

Sounds to me like you are really doing a good job. I a not sure what else you could fine tune. Are you doing any strength training. I only do exercises I feel will help me run stronger.

Thanks for the advice Gail, I have glutamine I put in my water when I work out, and I usually have a bar afterward, so that is consistent w/ your plan. How long do you consider your "long" runs? Do you go by mileage or time? I like to have a sport drink if I'm working out for over an hour, less than that and I just use the glutamine and the bar (or 1/2 a bar if it's a bigger one). I have some accelerade powder I could use, but I find it really chalky, and have to mix it up ahead of time to dissolve it. Maybe I need to plan a longer workout session in my week, I've been doing btwn 30-60 min of cardio 5-6 days a week, but usually I'm doing 45 min a session. I think if I put in one longer session a week (over an hour) using the accelerade, and tried to get in an extra ST session, maybe I'll see a change.

Mama -I don't drink a protein drink (not like a body builder would do). I drink a drink that had protein in it, along with carbs and a bit of fat (milk base).

I strictly stuck to Power Bar Recovery drink until I saw on Discovery one day that Slim Fast or most store brand meal replacement will do the same thing for you.

My exercise of choice is running, so I have a need to replenish carbs, but being a runner, my muscles also take a beating so some protein is important.

I run my long runs with Accelerade...it has a 4:1 carb/protein ratio. The problem with Accelerade is I find it's a bit hard on my belly and I can't drink as much of it as I would like...so I am think if I can add a whey protein to a drink like GU02...I might have the perfect running drink for me. :-)

I guess the problem for me was that even though I wasn't very hungry after a big workout (specially a long run) the next day there was no satisfying my hunger. Things are going much better now.

Thanks for letting me know that I am an inspiration. I wish my friends at home thought of me that way, but so far I have only inspired one to run and she ended up injured. hehehe

Kayotic - that is what I am trying to figure out right now. I read a book on nutrition and endurance running by Matt Fitzgerald, the very first thing I have changed is how I fuel my body after a workout. Most of my workout are pretty intense (at least I think they are). After a hard or long run I was never hungry. I could go the rest of the day without eating.

Not good for the next run, or the body fat and lean muscle. Now after every workout I drink a recovery drink..either Power Bar Recovery or something similar to Slim Fast. I also try and run with a sports drink that contains protein. Both of these things has really made my workouts feel much better. I haven't gain any weight at all since I am doing this (even if it has added calories to my day). I took my fat reading today and it's at it's lowest in a long time...but that could be a fluke...and next Wednesday I may see something totally different.

This book says anything that makes you have healthier also makes you run better and it also works the other way around...anything that helps you have a better workout also makes you healthier.

My next move might be to add some glutamine to my diet.

I'm not looking at it as a competition just for that reason. I have never been able to maintain w/in 1% of my weight, but still post whatever comes up on the scale anyway. I'm hoping the results will eventually show a fat loss, but that hasn't occured yet. I'm wondering if anyone knows a plan that helps w/ muscle gain or fat loss specifically? I seem to be maintaining my lean body mass, but gaining fat here recently. I need to change something, I just don't know what that is. MAMA - Post your data by each Wednesday at Midnight.

Quoting from an earlier post, "Those who don't report by Wednesday midnight EDT for a given week are assumed to have stayed at the same values they were the week before."
