All you need to do, to get calories to maintain, is go back to the start page and set your end weight as your current weight and it'll tell you what your range is!

Hey - I haven't been tracking for quite a while. Just did a little for today after going to a site to figure out how many calories I need to maintain. Is that available here?? Anyway tracking is actually fun when you have a little more calories to play with!! I think we don't realize what a benefit it is to be able to just enter foods and have the information appear and be added up, too!! The suggested menus are good, too, only some foods I haven't tried for a while. Might be a good idea for some variety, though.

I guess for me it will be track when I feel like it and don't track when I don't. What freedom!!

Right now, I would lose big time ANY challenge. I'm still too new at maintaining. If I don't track, pretty soon I get it in my head that I can eat anything! So, I'm tracking and staying at the lower end of the calories and exercising more.

I know I have to keep track of the calories. I went away for a weekend last summer, and had no access to the internet. I wrote down what I ate, but I don't have the calorie count in my head. I gained two pounds. Maybe it was just water, but I don't thinks so. I rather go steps forward when I can, not backwards (though somedays, it seams to be un-avoidable).

Hi EJohnchat, interesting to maintain weight +-1% and reduce body fat by 5% have you checked www.active.com/calculators/bodyfat_calc_to
go.cfm
with waist, wrist, forearm, and hip measurements and weight the body fat is calculated in this site. Count me in.

Sure PUNCHILOUIE. I am always open to a challenge and willing to lead. How about a Fall 5% Melt Down, a challenge to maintain weight within 1% of starting weight while at the same time reducing total body fat by 5% (as opposed to reducing %body fat by 5) in 3 months? Problem is, I don't have a means to do this measurement accurately and with good repeatability. I would also like a means to do it myself without assistance. The numbers are all over the place on my electronic scales. I was thinking of using http://www.he.net/~zone/prothd2.html but it only reports % body fat and jumps by whole numbers. I could reverse engineer the equation but this would take time. Does anyone have a method that meets the above criteria and can be done with 2 or 3 simple tape measurements?

Grace and Peace,
John

I just found out about this team, it's late to participate in this challenge, but I would like to say that it's interesting to try the maintenance without being worry about it, hopefully there will be another one soon, Happy Fall to everyone! emoticon

Our weather here is rainy and cold! I like the warm weather better, it gets me off my butt more easily. But like I posted on a different thread, I am re-evalutaing my goal weight range, and think I'm going to raise it a little, from 128-132 up to 130-135. It just will fit better to where I seem to have settled w/ my current eating/exercise habits.

highest weight ever:202, SP starting weight: 143

New goal: more practical new goal, 129, update ticker to reflect that goal.

Well, I am sure to loose this challenge big time. I put on about 5 pounds soon after my wife returned from 5 months of visiting her family overseas. Her cooking is hard to resist and she loves her meat. But the good news is that my weight has stabilized at about 184. She said I was too skinny at 179. The main reason I use statistics to see where I am at is due to the high variability in the measurements. One sigma is about a pound. (WINDSURFNERD should know what that means if no one else does.) The numbers would drive me crazy if I didn't have statistics to tell me whether my weight is out of control or not. I am looking to at least stay in control averaging 186 or less. But I would like to shed some more of this belly fat. I plan to do that with extensive strength training this winter. But for now, I am enjoying the warm weather the best I can.
How is everyone else doing?

Grace and Peace,
John

Wow, I wish I had known about this challenge. I haven't tracked my food in MONTHS LOL! Well, I do try to keep track of how many fruits and veggies I'm eating, and how much sodium and calcium I'm taking in. But it's mostly in my head, which is bad because I know my sodium creeps up there. I do track my strength training and exercise consistently though. That's about the only thing I do track. My weight fluctuates between 121 (at my lowest) and 125.

Tracking is time consuming but remains a useful tool for me so I am out there. I have been busy so my Spark time is way down from earlier in the year, that I can do but since I found this team I am not inclined to take that one up either. Best to all!

I'm with EJOHN and others...weigh everyday just to make sure I'm "in spec" and to keep body awareness sharp. I don't track calories unless my mindless/boredom eating ramps up, but like Michelle I try to focus on getting 5 fruits/veggies & adequate protein.

Although I *am* a mathematician (statistics, actually!), I don't use a spreadsheet to analyze my weight...i just do the same intuitive thing most people here do emoticon

Oh my. I am going to lose this one already, lol. I am pretty fanatical right now since I can not run. That means I am really watching my calories in and out. But I also have an in since I go back to school next week and time will be precious so we shall see how it all balances out.

I was 107 this morning on the nose.

OK THEGARDENCHICK. Here is the challenge.
The object is to maintain your weight with as little as possible time spent in maintenance activities. A secondary goal is to minimize time on SP. This challenge is to last one month starting now. Post your starting weight as soon as possible. It doesn't need to be your current weight, it can be your last known weight if you weigh yourself infrequently.
Then each day, week or whenever, post how much time you have spent to date in maintenance activities (like tracking your weight, tracking your caloric input and burn) and how much time spent on SP.
The winner of the challenge will be the person who has spent the least amount of time tracking and yet has maintained their weight within 1% of their starting weight without any gain.
The winner of the secondary challenge is the person who has spent the least amount of time on SP and yet has maintained their weight within 1% of their starting weight without any gain.

My starting weight is 179.5
Time spent through yesterday on maintenance activities - 2 minutes
Time spent through yesterday on SP - 4 hours

Grace and Peace,
John

Hey Shrlz - I am not a mathematician but it has always been my strongest subject in school. I am an Engineer.
Tightness on your favorite jeans sounds like a good gauge of how you are doing. Do you wear them often? I don't have any new clothes that fit me snug enough to let me know how I am doing.
The thing about the statistical analysis is that now that I have my spreadsheet set up, I can see where I am in 2 minutes. The tracking always took me over an hour each day and more importantly, it drove my wife crazy.
I will let you know about the proposed team focus. It seems that this "At Goal and Maintaining" team meets most of my needs, except some interesting challenges. I need to give this some more thought.
All the best in your healthy lifestyle journey.

John

I tried counting "exchanges" this past week. 3 fruits, 3 veg, 6 oz meat, 2 milk servings,2 fat servings, 4 grain, total 20. Didn't make it one day! Gone back to my standard "meat, fruit, vegetables, and 1 hour exercise 5 days a week" plan. No counting!!! weighing every day...works for me!

I've been doing this for a couple of months now. I don't track calories anymore. I keep track of my servings of water, fruits, veggies, whole grains, and protein in my running log - and now on the Quick Tracker too. I weigh every day, so I know when I need to cut back a little. It was so scary to stop counting calories, but this is really working.

I track for a while after I hit my goal, and then got tired of it too. I'm tracking in a different program now, since my weight crept back up after my job change led to some stress eating, mostly at night. I feel more in control now, and don't plan to track forever, just when I need the push to not stress eat.

I track my weight daily, and get the statistical gain thing, I think thats how I look at it. If it's trending up, I need to figure out why, eat less, exercise more.

I'd really like to get to the point again where I don't feel the need to track all the calories. I think the quick tracker may be a good mid point and way to wean off the total tracker.

I still like to track my workouts, I do that in the program that came with my Polar HRM. Now if I can just figure out how to get it to connect w/ my computer it will be much easier.

I am still too much of a control freak to let go yet. I have been doing it on the weekends here and there so I am creeping off the stairs and wading into the shallow end of the pool, lol.

Are you a mathematician? I'm whatever the opposite of a mathematician is -- I would rather track calories til the cows come home than do a statistical analysis.

I go for a more intuitive approach - when my favorite jeans start feeling tight, I go back to recording food and exercise until they feel comfortable again. Maybe you could call that a biofeedback technique.

Good luck with your new group! When you know more about its focus and how it will work, maybe I will be interested.

cheers,
Shrlz

Anyone interested in a challenge where the goal is to maintain your weight (and healthy lifestyle) with a minimal amount of time and effort and have fun doing so? Sorry, but I would rather do about anything but track my calories in/out. Not measuring and recording my breakfast gives me an extra 5 minutes on my bike watching the sunrise.

I have been at my goal weight for about 3 weeks now and have had some issues with yo-yo weight. I haven't tracked my calories much since I got it all under control. How do I know it is under control? I weigh myself each and every day. I plot the results and do a daily statistical analysis on the data. So I can say now that my weight is in statistical control. And my average is below a BMI of 24.9. And variations on the scales don't bother me as I let the statistics tell me whether there has been a statistically significant change in my weight or not.

I can tell when I eat too few calories. I don't have any energy. So I don't need to worry about that.

So how about you?

Grace and Peace,
John
