So encouraging to see so many people on this team doing well during this holiday week. We are in the home stretch and it is looking really good. I hope to keep it up this evening. Bringing a big antipasto salad to my neighbor's house tonight. Happy new year, teammates!

I had a blast and ate my very, very very favorite treats (I subscribe to the "food snob" ethic). I exercised in between a week of family, guests, cooking, and celebration.
Back on track today with food and exercise.........no pounds gained. I am also nearly 12 years sober, so my holidays are a true celebration of healthier living without deprivation.
The blog was great. Thanks for the link.
Happy New Year, Maintainers!!!!

All the Christmas goodies are gone. I'll make a WW roast beef hash out of the little bit of leftover roast beef for tonight. The Christmas bread and all the cookies are gone, given to grateful family members. New Years's Day is about bowl games, not food. Our big day is Christmas Day, the rest is lights and pretty decorations, both calorie free.

Halfway through my vacation and still no net gain. I'm so excited! I've never done this well over the holidays before and it's really motivating me to keep it up. Here's to starting the new year without any extra baggage!

My name's Tina. I lost more than 90 pounds between March 2010 and March 2012 and have been keeping if off ever since.

I loved that blog. It was excellent as well I am a fan of her book. Two holiday feasts down and the scale is the same. Good. I am trying to eat the same way I usually eat.
My problem is two days without exercise due to entertaining my guests. I am going to exercise today no matter what.

I'm still exercising daily and I actually RAN yesterday. The knee is complaining a little today, but I'm going to "roller it" and give it a few days and get back out there. I'm tired of not running. I've been using the stationary bike, but it's boring. I'll keep at it though. I'm going to get through the holidays maintaining where I am now!

Good job everyone on the "small successes" that I've been reading about. Keep it up!

Refuse to Regain had a nice story about maintaining during the holidays that I enjoyed.

Thought I'd share it here, in case you guys would like to read it, too:

www.refusetoregain.com/2013/12/falling-off
-the-various-wagons-a-holiday-peril.html

It echoes some of the same things we tend to hear around here from successful maintainers - as much as possible, try to stick to your usual schedule for food and/or exercise, and when you fall off, get back on as quickly as you can, preferably at the next meal.

They've had some other pretty interesting posts too, lately.

Never, ever, EVER give up!

From BMI 53 (336 lbs) to under 30. Now aiming for less than 20% body fat.

Hosted a holiday open house yesterday and a friend brought a huge, and I mean huge, box of Whitmans Sampler chocolates. Opened it immediately to share with everyone. Having DH bring the rest to his office for everyone. Don't want it in my house. LOL

Great job, ladies! I've got my cookies all boxed up and ready to give away. I kept a small box for me and my husband and hopefully I can stay strong enough to stick to my (maximum of) two a day. Even if I don't, there aren't enough of them left to cause serious harm. My husband and I have different favorites and the ones he likes best don't tempt me very much. I kept mostly the ones he likes and much fewer of the rest. Fingers crossed that I can maintain my resolve and still enjoy them in moderation!

So far, so good on the holiday eating for me this year. Haven't had a net gain. The real challenge for me will be when school closes, though, and I've got lots of time on my hands to get naughty. I'm determined to keep things under control this year and am hoping to walk away with less than a three-pound gain come January 7 when I head back to work. Developing a plan to help me do just that!

Catching up while waiting for DH to get up. We started our Thanksgiving with a 5K turkey trot, then came home to cook dinner of Cornish hen, sugar snap peas, leftover quinoa, and a salad. Dessert was a flavored decaf. Then we cleaned up the kitchen, packed for our trip, and headed to the airport to leave for Iceland. While here, we have managed to work out in the gym, hike (on a glacier!), or just walk near the hotel. The weather in Reykjavik has been drizzly and cool, so we are getting a taste of what winter may be like if we move to the Pacific Northwest.

Planning to cut back on amount I cook for the next event. It is hard enough to resist the first day but the left overs are killers. Lowering the amount of butter and sugar I used in recipes really helped. Also adding in a large plain salad helped me to cover half of my plate with healthy food. I did a lot better at portions this year after working with Spark all year.

Not a good end to the holiday weekend for me. Fighting a "wanna be" migraine and like a dummy, I picked up a table yesterday to vacuum under it and hurt my back. Gotta get up and move to keep from getting stiff.

Well here is DECEMBER. One of the things I notice about it is how rich everything looks--color, lights, and of course food. It is not an easy time to think of "sparing" ourselves things. So I thought I'd start this month by remembering that the season can be a "feast for the eyes" to enjoy and savor without being an opportunity to stuff myself. I never like the feeling anyway. So if you see me around, I'll be wearing red, smiling and enamored of all the lights (-:

That's my intention as I begin. I know I won't be perfect, but when in doubt I will look around and enjoy the beauty. Wish me good luck!

Really struggling today, but more emotional eating than holiday related. Just too darned convenient turn to holiday leftovers. It may partially be tiredness too. Going to bed REALLY really early tonight. At least that will keep me out of the kitchen!

My main plan of attack - order gifts to be delivered. I used to make over 100 lbs of peanut brittle each year, and wrap them in pretty boxes, 2 lbs each. Not happening this year. For each batch I would have make, I am going to add fitness instead. I am going to have a lot of disappointed friends, family members and colleagues.

I am going to miss the wonderful aroma in the house, but I can feel the stress melting away with my decision. We will see how far my commitment gets the closer I get to Christmas! Traditions are hard to break.

My only problem at Christmas is the sugar cookies. I roll and bake them, using the same cookie cutters my mother used when I was little. Then ice them with buttercream icing. They are mandatory for my kids. I think they love the cookies more than the roast beef or the gifts. I only do it once a year and they are SO good! I can pass on all the other stuff without a second glance, but those cookies! They are the only cookies I ever eat, and it's hard to just have one, once a year.

I still have to freeze the leftover turkey that I didn't give away, as well as the ham. Hubby won't eat turkey ever in any form, so the leftover concept is for my salads.

WooHoo! I took in less calories than I usually do on a typical day while still being more stuffed than the turkey! I ate 6 different vegetable dishes along with the turkey, mashed potatoes, hot roll w real butter and stuffing. The trick?....portion control, lots of water and a 21 mile bike ride! Christmas? BRING IT ON!

The good news is I did not stuff myself on Thanksgiving; the hard news: leftovers!! Tons. Am planning to pack and freeze today to save the harvest! For any cooks out there, I butterflied my turkey and boy did it turn out well.

Have a great post-Thanksgiving day! emoticon

We had our Thanksgiving dinner today because our daughter has to go back to Texas tomorrow.
We had roast chicken, dressing, cranberry sauce, cranberry relish, broccoli, carrot and celery sticks, home-made rolls and no dessert. We're all trying to lose weight, so weighed and measured our food. It's so cold and snowy we couldn't go for our usual walk, so will have to get in extra walking tomorrow.

Sleep well, friend. I am headed to the pool to go water walking to head off the problems. When I get done I sleep like a baby.

Clgalindo, I hope that half a roll is a little taste of Heaven for you. Sounds as if you have a great plan.

One tip from me is sleep. I will focus on getting enough hours of good-quality shut-eye. Being tired seems to wake up my hunger, and I want to devour everything in sight.

I'm with you, Toni. I'll be cooking all day today and tomorrow (and yesterday). Exhaustion is a great appetite suppressant.

So I'm cooking this morning...a few things I can do a day in advance. I like the process. Sometimes for this holiday as good as the food looks I don't want to eat much when we sit down. It's weird. Anyone else have that experience? Not that it stops me from pumpkin pie--LOL--my husband makes and serves that. I'm thinking small piece...

Thank you for your thoughts. Your dinner sounds yummy! I have already decided to serve at least 6 vegetable dishes to go with the turkey. The mashed potatoes will be made with half cauliflower. I will allow myself 1/2 of one of my hot rolls with real butter. I haven't had white flour or butter in 6 months! It will be heaven as I savor every bite! Since I'm not really a sweet eater, the pies won't tempt me...but those ROLLS! AAARGH!

Everyone has probably seen this, but in case you missed it there was a blog about a December/holiday challenge. It talks about setting a goal or two. For my part my intention is to keep the holiday focused on human connection. I'm sure I'll get caught up on a few frenzies, but I hope, not too many!

Just this morning, my husband and I went for just a brisk 15 minute walk in our neighborhood even though it is cold and rainy and it snowed last night. I've resolved that during the holidays I will try to get in a brisk walk every day, no matter what the weather. If it happens to be icy, I've got a "chair exercise" DVD we can do which gives us a good workout. It really is true that small changes bring big results when you're focused on keeping your weight and fitness where you want it. Also, we're having a roasting hen instead of turkey for Thanksgiving because there will be just the two of us and our daughter for Thanksgiving dinner. I'm so glad we've got this Pop In to keep us healthy during the holidays. Have a good one!

CLGALINDO, it's so sad your son died earlier this year. Blessings during the holidays for you and your family.

What a great thread! We will not be cooking a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, because we have travel plans. Early Thursday morning, though, DH and I will run our first 5K Turkey Trot. There are so many to choose from, but this one is actually close to home! Thanks, Mobycarp, for your support, and good luck on your 10K.

Anyway, I did pull out a Cornish hen for Thanksgiving, and since we do not want a lot of leftovers, we will forgo the rich sides we normally prepare: Potatoes Anna (a Vegetarian Times recipe from years back with thin-sliced white and sweet potatoes layered with butter and topped with Parmesan cheese), green bean casserole, and pumpkin pie. Our sides will likely be steamed veggies, brown rice, and a salad of mixed greens. Only one glass of wine.

My adult children and I will be guests at my sister's for the Thanksgiving holiday. We have a fairly big family and only 3 family members are watching our weight. Unfortunately, we cook for the taste of the masses, so even the veggies will have butter on them! Yikes. Last year, I felt I made good choices. I put only a bite or two of each item on my plate. However, at the end of the meal I still felt bloated from over eating. I think this year, I will just have to make hard decisions and not taste everything. emoticon

We've recently moved to Norfolk (UK) from London and there is cultural divide for sure. In London we usually experience Diwali as it runs into our Bonfire Celebrations on NOV 5th (the Gunpowder plot and Guy Fawkes).
This year we'd moved by then and saw very few fireworks apart from the organise firework display for Bonfre Night on the beach
There is no Thanksgiving in the UK so we're heading straight for Crimbo (slang over here for Christmas)...........and already I've got my "what can I do to keep fit in this freezing weather" hat on..........stairstepping, weights, indoor bowling, jumping jacks emoticon
Last year I managed to organise the main feast, even with a small Christmas pud with custard and brandy butter to keep in calorie range!

Yeah, as a Jewish person, I'm looking forward to not being inundated by Christmas everywhere!

We missed Diwali, we were in the Solomon Islands at that time and there are few Hindus there.

It'll be interesting for Chanukah, though, since we're heading over to Lombok tomorrow - and that island is mostly Muslim. Oh well, I wasn't planning on making latkes anyway.

Phebess, Bali is a Hindu island in a Muslim nation. The Dawali lights are probably down by now, one of their big festivals. I know there is a small Christian community, but Christmas is primarily a religious day for them, like it was here before the marketers got hold of it.

I have banished butter from this years dinner. I plan to use vegan spread and lots of herbs and spices to compensate. Moving the sweet potatoes to Friday night so there won't be so much food on Thursday. Nice place to post

My husband has to work in the morning so I'm solo in the kitchen cooking for ten. I'll have to have tea or coffee close so I don't "taste test" everything and end up eating two meals. I do pretty good during dinner, but we make a lot of dishes. Green bean casserole, broccoli cheese casserole, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, pies, rolls, turkey, stuffing, etc. We have a fresh veggie relish tray out most of the morning, so that does help.

Even with one spoon of everything, it adds up. All we can do is try! Moderation is the key...now if my will power will remember that!

Keep spark'n friends.

Uh oh, I thought I post here and it has disappeared! Apparently I responded to something, somewhere, in a total non sequitor!!!

Anyway, we're travelling around Bali, and so will miss most of the holiday hype. Who wants a frozen turkey that flew 10,000 miles for a special (and pricey) pseudo American meal? I'd rather have Balinese duck or chicken!

We have our menorah and candles for Chanukah, and might splurge on a dessert.

And Christmas seems to be non-existent here, which is actually kind of nice.

New Year's Eve Day (also known as Old Year's Day) there's a big carnival down south, we may go to that.

But nothing food oriented!

I have Thanksgiving down to a science by now. I'll start cooking tomorrow and all day Wednesday. Thursday I carry tables and chairs around, get the guest room and bathroom fluffed up for my sister and her husband, and cook for a few hours. By the time we sit down I'm so exhausted I can hardly eat, which is a good thing to be. Lots of family chaos, and our discussions are more about what to name the new baby due in February, Matt's new girlfriend, Darren's next degree, and, of course, the continuing misery of the Redskins, just catching up since we don't see each other all together very often. We'll take the annual photo of me, my sister and brother for Mom. We are HER babies, even if we are all over 60 now. It's about the family, the food is just the backdrop. A very time consuming backdrop.

Now Christmas cookies on the other hand........

I plan on talking a lot during dinner. Anything to keep from eating so much. (Yes, I'm serious.) Perhaps I'll do a bit more drinking, too. That might improve the result as well.

All I have to do is compile a lot more interesting things to yammer on about. Example:

the Cheney sisters
the idiot mayor of Toronto
Snowden and NSA spying
healthcare debacle
gun control
environment and global warming
and so on ...

Normally, I avoid religion and politics but this year, what the heck, let'er rip. :-P

Our Thanksgiving and Christmas will be very different this year. Yes, of course it will be healthier with lots and lots of veggies, and good choices but it will be different in more challenging ways. Our son died in April. This holiday season reduces me to an emotional puddle. We will only have one son home and our 4 year old grandson from our deceased son. But, we are counting our blessings nevertheless. It's just going to be tough. Prayers are most welcome.

Awesome thread! I always have trouble over the holidays, but just try to get a little bit better each year. Obviously it's a lot easier when we're in our comfort zones and controlling what's made, but I often find it helpful to being a few healthier or lightened up options when I'm dining elsewhere. I'm planning on making this dessert for an upcoming celebration at a friend's place so I can indulge a bit without so much worry about going too overboard:

Thanks for starting this thread!! It will only be my hubby & me for Thanksgiving since our move to the Southwest far from family a few months ago. He wants the traditional meal but I am planning in some healthy things that I can choose from - a baked sweet potato, fresh fruit & the rest will be portion control!

Two years ago, I wanted to run a 5K on Thanksgiving Day. There weren't any that were close, and the 4.4 mile race scared me away with crowds and lack of parking, so I ended up with my very first 10K on Thanksgiving Day 2011, less than 2 months after completing the 5K Your Way program.

Thursday will be the third year in a row that I am in a 10K at 9 AM on Thanksgiving Day. It is becoming a tradition, each year having its own concerns and challenges that aren't quite like the other years. This year, it's winter. Temperature should be in the low 20s F, with snow on the ground. There could be strong winds. This would have been too much for me two years ago, but it sounds like fun now.

My daughter got invitations for the two of us to a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with some friends of hers. I expect to have some struggles with portion control, but after running a 10K in the morning I won't feel too guilty about a large meal in the late afternoon/early evening.

This year I went back to my old standby team to take part in their holiday challenge. I really needed it. The previous weekend (starting on a Thursday) I went to visit my cousin and I guess I left everything I learned from spark at home tucked away in a drawer! So I have been very active in doing the challenges and posting on the support threads! I am on a good healthy roll! Or Streak as we say here on Spark!

My sister and I are doing the Thanksgiving Dinner for the family. I do the turkeys (yes, two) and we try to make things just a bit healthier. We will make sweet potatoes. Becky always went whole hog with the sweet potato casserole! Very unhealthy. We finally discovered we did not need to add all the marshmallows and other stuff to the sweet potatoes. We discovered that they got their name deservedly so! They were sweet enough! We bake them in their jackets and when done or cooled we take them out of the jackets and then Beck mashes them and then uses the hand mixer to whip them up without adding and extra calories! Who knew!

I have made my plan as to what I will be eating on emoticon Day, all day. I will be taking out the measuring cups and the food scale to keep myself honest! For our Christmas family dinner we will be going to my nieces home. I will find out what she is planning for dinner so I can make my plan. For me if I fail to plan I plan to fail! Also my diet and exercise buddy is right here in the house. Now if we could get her DH interested in exercise!

I will check back in after Thanksgiving (if not before) to let you know how I did! Good luck to all!

LOGOULD - That's a really good idea. The only really unknown for me, for the most part, is my mom's wild rice dressing, but I know what's in it and could estimate the damage. Maybe that'll help me take a smaller portion - it's one on my fave Thanksgiving dishes - but I find that I'm much more likely to cut back or abstain if I know what the damage will be.

I'm also preplanning my workouts and taking my gear. Staying on track is much easier with exercise for me. Also, reminding myself that Thanksgiving Day, not the whole weekend, is the time for a bit of indulgence. In the past, I've had the tendency to write the whole time period off, and use travel, not being at home, etc as an excuse. While I may not be able to be quite as healthy, I'm bringing things with me so that I have good choices accessible.

I'm not cooking this Thanksgiving so it makes it much easier, especially not having to deal with all the dibby-dabs of ingredients left over and then all the actual leftovers. I did feel a little guilty, though, when the 6 year old granddaughter asked if I was making a feast. Her other grandmother is, though, and they do not need 2 "feasts". Hubby and I will eat something reasonable and feel good.

Great idea! This next few weeks proves to be my undoing every year, so a little (or A LOT) of help and guidance is welcome. As for me, I always have appreciated the extra help in cooking the holiday meals, but it is impossible to track what others cook. Last year, I made a point of oooing and ahhhhing over dishes and then asking for the recipes of those that I know are holiday staples. Those recipes are being entered onto the recipe calculator here on Spark for analyisis and then I will have some kind of idea the damage they can do even if not exact, it will be close.

GMONDELLO and I invite you to use this thread to Pop In with ideas to make the holidays healthy. We see it as a forum to make note of efforts we make to stay on track during the holidays. Whether it is a light recipe, a saying (no butter cookie will ruin my maintenance), a link to a great blog, or a moment of desperation this is a place to make note of it. Let's support one another to make this holiday our own.

Just to get us started...I'm breaking with tradition this year and making a healthy sweet potato dish instead of candied yams or sweet potatoes. Call me Queen of my Thanksgiving Kitchen!
