Hi all. I'm a new addition to this thread, but finding I need help staying committed to maintenance. Actually, what I need to wrap my head around is getting comfortable with this maintenance weight and not constantly beating myself up over not getting to an even lower maintenance weight. (I've been +/- 3 lbs for about two years). I blame it on the fact that I have super skinny friends, so even at maintenance I'm the *bigger* girl.

Anyways, my goal today is an hour of Jazzercise and an extra 20-30 minutes of strength training at home after. Longer term, I'm hoping that the added strength training will help me lose body fat/inches even if if my weight stays the same.

Food wise, I'm being more mindful of unnecessary carbs and adding a green juice to my morning routine, just because I like it! Have a great day everyone!

Ok, here I am, back again! See??? I should have kept this thread up when I started it b/c I slipped a lot and now have to lose again. So right now, I'm in "weight loss mode". I eat on-plan every day and try to exercise. This is different than before b/c before I made sure I exercised and wasn't so careful about eating on-plan. But, in the meantime Dr Oz said calories are 80% of weight loss and we can lose weight without exercise, so I've changed up my strategy.

Onward I go...onward I go.

I used to have a glaze stick addiction, when I worked around the corner from a Dunkins. Now I haven't touched a donut in at least 8 years. Not worth it.

I wonder if I'm settling into a higher maintenance weight. I'm pretty satisfied with what I'm eating and my physical activity is great. My weight just seems to want to be 2-3 lbs over "goal." Now the self-scrutiny begins! Am I being a settling slacker or a realist? BMI is 19; nothing wrong with that. And all my clothes fit.

That's great. If I had a dunkin donuts by me let me tell you I would get a glaze stick from there with a medium coffee. I get that every three to four months.

I'm not really fond of doughnuts. Sometimes I feel like one but I agree with you. I don't think I've had one in years either and I have a doughnut shop two blocks down the street. Good for us!!

I saw an ad for Cutthroat Kitchen on FoodTv, and Alton Brown held up a box of doughnuts. I realized I haven't had a doughnut in about 10 years. Amazing.

I'm starting a one week no junk challenge today. I've been doing well with limiting the junk food but slipped a little over the weekend, so I'm doing a refresher challenge this week.

The week's menu is planned, I just need to pick up some fresh broccoli for tomorrow and I made some bean salad this morning for lunches this week.

Today's exercises will be walking, core strength and wii tennis for fun.

Did lots of yardwork yesterday, plan to do some more today. I need to pull the rest of the annuals and prune a couple of bushes. That plus some wii tennis and walking will be today's exercise.

Today's menu made out. I'm having a slice of pumpkin cake today for dessert. The rest of the menu is healthy choices.

Oh dear. Not only do I see that I haven't started the planned gardening for today, but I'm no longer only 1.4 over goal. I'm trying to rationalize away the actual +3.6 because of an overly salty dinner, but in my heart I know that this has all the earmarks of a classic upward creep.

Made out today's menu, except for dinner. DH wants to eat out today, something we very rarely do. My plan is to choose as healthy as I can. No dessert.

Exercise today will be core exercises, wii tennis, and some yardwork this afternoon.

Suzy, I love to cook. I love playing with food before I eat it, which is all food prep really is. I don't use any prepared or branded ingredients, which is why I prefer the old cookbooks, the ones written before there were prepared ingredients to use. I listen to a recorded book and cut and chop and use lots of prep bowls and pots, and I love it. Even though there are only two of us now. No desserts these days (the kids are long gone) so no baking, but cooking I can still do.

Stuck to my menu plan the last two days when my Mom was visiting.

Did lots of walking both days, shopping with Mom. Also did some exercise Wednesday morning before she arrived.

Today's menu made out, plan to stay on plan today.

Exercise - none today, rest and me time day.

When it rain and I can't get out. I walk in my house until I get to the time I would have walked outside. I walk in the rain if it's not too hard of a rain.

Suzy, I'd gladly walk the malls and stores just to have the rain. It's so dry here!

Now the nonstop rain has got me! I'm feeling better but haven't been able to get in a walk because of the deluge here in SW Florida. It should end tomorrow. I sure hope so!

Gosh, I haven't been here in a while. How is everybody? I can't say I've been great, because I've been fighting a cold all week, sleeping in late, skipping my morning exercise routine, and starting to feel like a blob. I felt so much better today that I did the laundry, made the bed, and went out in the yard to weed for an hour while Bill put together my new arched trellis. Things are looking up, but now I need to get my "feed a cold, starve a fever" eating under control.

Don't worry about it Pam, it's good you're there for your Mom, that's important.

Exercise - Did a lot of store walking this morning when we went shopping. That always raises my pain level so now I'll rest a while and this afternoon I'll do some wii tennis and core and lower body strength exercises.

Menu done. Made some more bean salad, this time with some hard boiled egg, for lunches this week. DH bought some donuts this morning, Krispy Kreme pumpkin spice. Since pumpkin is a favorite of mine and I've never had Krispy Kreme donuts of any kind, I had a couple. They were good but not good enough to entice me back to eating donuts regularly again. I can't believe I'm saying that! Anyway, the rest of what we bought was healthy foods and I feel more tempted by that.

Pam, I know exactly how your day can be cut up by taking care of Mom. There is no choice but to take care of her. This is why I define a "good day" by my eating and nothing else. I have control over what I eat regardless of the rest of the chaos of a day. If I needed that 2 hour uninterrupted walk to acknowledge a "good day", there would be far fewer of them. I prefer to go to bed at night knowing that I ate exactly to my Plan, whatever that was, because Mom's life can't interfere with that.

Hi All,

It's been awhile since I had a chance to log on. It's been a hectic couple of days and it looks like the rest of the week will be hectic as well. Mom has dr. appt. every day this week in the middle of each day which pretty well breaks up the day so that its hard to get other things done.

I did my exercising today and my weight stays the same. I stayed in my nutrition range. All is good. Talk to you later.

That homemade pizza sounds good. I might have to try that. I can do a half pepperoni for my DH and half cheese and veggie for me.

Today's exercise - I did 10" elliptical before breakfast. Will do an ABBA walk before lunch and some wii tennis this afternoon.

Menu made out for today - turkey burger for today's dinner and a side salad. Still not eating junk food, even though I've now given myself permission to have some if I really really want it. But so far, not tempted at all. We went to the local grocery store yesterday, they have an amazing bakery, but I wasn't tempted. On the way there I thought "if they have single cake slices I'll get some for tonight's dessert". Once we got there I changed my mind and didn't want it. YAY !!!

Felina, have you ever made your own pizza? Once you do that there is no going back. You can do the overnight cold rise dough, or the 4 hour regular rise for a thin, crisp crust. I put spinach, sliced black olives, slices of roma tomato and feta cheese on it, and it is delicious! And I don't have to feel swollen from salt or guilty. I may not have an 800 degree oven, but 550 on a pizza stone works just fine.

Weekends are such a mess for me, eatingwise. We go out to lunch both days, which throws off my planning. I'll be in better shape when the week starts up again.

What an accident! It sounds like a showdown between tradition and modernity.

Yeah, that was on the front page of the local paper. The horse was lodged inside the car mostly on the passenger side and had to be destroyed. The passenger was seriously injured. I haven't heard any updates on her condition. Very scary.

We had the pizza last night and it was good but I didn't enjoy it as much as usual, even though I was looking forward to it. I got right back on track, no increased temptations after. In fact I didn't eat anything the rest of the night.

Today's a rest day, so no exercise today.

Menu made out - baked oatmeal for breakfast, salmon sandwich for lunch, turkey dog and baked beans for dinner. Probably some yogurt and blueberries for a snack.

Felina, I think I read about a car accident with a runaway horse on a Lancaster County road last week. It killed the horse and injured the occupants of the car. The photo was amazing with a dead horse pretty much inside the car.

I'm surprised to hear there's Amish in Florida. They have some tasty baked goods !

Today's exercise - core strength exercises and walking

Menu is made out, and speaking of pizza, we're having one for dinner tonight, the first I've had in almost 2 months. I've planned for it, keeping the rest of today's menu full of veggies, fruits, and yogurt. This will be a test for me. Pizza often triggers my urge for junk food, but I've been doing my no junk challenge for 7 weeks now and nothing has tempted me. But DH really wants some pizza so today's the day.

Weighed in yesterday and I've lost 8.5 pounds since limiting the junk food.

Amazingly, we have Amish down here in SW Florida. There's an Amish bakery in the local mall; an Amish girl sells baked goods and lemonade on the street in Arcadia's antiques district; and I know there must be farms around here somewhere.

Pizza is one of those foods I have to keep out of the house, or I lose all control. My only concession to good health is ordering the thin crust, but then I eat half of it!

RPCLEM2000 - I'd like to live even farther into the country than we are. I love the farms, especially the Amish ones. They do all their work the old fashioned way - using horses. Quite a sight ! We're in a tourist area, quaint towns like Bird-in-Hand and Intercourse are just a few miles away, and a couple of large shopping outlet centers are on route 30, about 5" from us.

NELLJONES - York is the next county over from us, about a 30" or so drive. I can't picture route 30 as a 2 lane road, it's so busy now. The Amish speak their own language sometimes, it could be German but I'm not sure. I hear them talking to each other sometimes but don't hear enough to recognize what it is.

Today's exercise - upper body and core strength, a Leslie Sansone or youtube walking video, maybe some wii tennis later

Menu made out - Yesterday we ran down to the farm market and I bought an apple dumpling that I had for breakfast today, a treat I occasionally buy myself. Delicious ! I also had a pumpkin whoopie pie yesterday, haven't had one of them in ages. Pumpkin's my favorite. That was yesterday's snack. Today I'm planning some yogurt and berries for my snack later.

FELINA, It sounds wonderful where you live I think I would like that for a visit. I don't think I could live there. It sounds just a little too country for me. I live on the peninsula between SF and San Jose in CA. It's one big megalopolis. I live in the city and I love it. I like having all the stores and everything else I may need just blocks away. I'm just a city girl.

I know what you mean about limiting just not working. There a couple of things I just can't have any of otherwise I go overboard. I just have no willpower when it comes to those items

Have a fantastic blessed day everyone. emoticon emoticon

I'm with you, RPCLEM, commercial bars and shakes sound like, if not junk food, then artificial food-like substances. If I want something like that I'll make it, and making them is just enough work to keep me from doing it very often. Same with baked goods. I never buy them, if I want them I'll bake them from scratch (no boxes), but only if I'm having company. And I have the enjoyment of baking.

Felina, my father's family is from Tioga County up to the north, so we would travel out route 30 and up 15, back in the days when they were still 2 or 3 lane roads. My first husband was from York, and his Grandmother Koller didn't speak much English, just the old German derivative. They had the most fabulous desserts, yet few of them were fat. There's got to be a clue in there somewhere.

SUZYMOBILE - I live in Pennsylvania Dutch country, just outside the city of Lancaster. There are Amish farms everywhere, in fact our back yard backs up to a corn field. We've been here 8 years and the novelty of Amish buggies driving past our house still hasn't worn off.

RPCLEM2000 - those bars and shakes don't sound like junk food to me, sounds like healthier fare.

My junk food problem was mostly with eating too many baked goods. Our local grocery store has a great bakery, located at the front of the store of course, and I could never NOT walk through and buy something. Eating something that decadent would prime my junk food tooth to keep eating the unhealthy stuff. Limiting it wasn't working so I decided to just say no. I can't believe that's working so well. I love that the healthy snacks are tasting so good to me now.
emoticon

Today - Made some baked oatmeal with peaches and raisins, having some for lunch today. Dinner will be a tomato/cheese sandwich, side of bean salad. Exercise - ABBA walk this morning, swim this afternoon.

Now that you mention it FELINA. Cake doesn't excite me like a cold fruit mix. I'm not an apple lover but yesterday I threw on in the fridge to get it cold and it was a great snack. I'm going to do that more often. I'm not sure I could give up junk food. I don't eat regular junk but I do have chocolate probiotic bars and chocolate protein shakes and healthy snack bars. Would you consider those to be healthy substitutions or junk food? I read the ingredients and they are organic and don't have the nasty stuff in it like HFCS.

Anyway I stay within stat my ranges and I feel good, although I think that has more to do with the exercising I include in my daily regime rather than what I'm eating.

I went off quite a bit this weekend and I've gained a lb or two because of it. I'm going to have to be more strict to get rid of it before it creeps up to far.

I guess that's it for today. Love to all emoticon

Isn't it great what happens when all that wheat and sugar junk leaves your system! (Conversely, you'd feel terrible if it came back in!) Fruits, veggies, and yogurt taste great. Keep on drooling, Felina! Where do you live anyway? The Amish farm sounds like a wonderful destination.

I'm disgruntled to have undone a week's hard work with an only slightly out-of-control weekend. But I guess that's what maintenance is about. Relaxing the reins sometimes and then having to reel them in again.

Today's exercise - store walking, core and lower body exercises, a swim later and a little wii tennis for fun

Menu is set for the day. Yesterday's snack was pineapple yogurt with frozen blueberries added. Heaven ! I'm noticing that my taste buds seem more sensitive since not eating junk food. Some foods I'm eating seem much more flavorful now. I'm loving it ! Me drooling over yogurt and blueberries instead of a slice of cake amazes me !

Suzy: Yeah, I guess it is pretty funny to study on the treadmill. Though I read in Brain Rules (which I never finished) that our brains work better when we're in motion. About the birthday treat, I've often found I weigh less after eating something particularly wicked as long as my calories for the day was still in range, because desserts weigh less per calorie. But what usually happens is that sweets actually stimulate hunger, and we might decide we've "blown it" and wind up bingeing.

I'm generally doing okay. It's a strength training day today.

SUZYMOBILE - that pie sounds decadently delicious !

Exercise today - Store walking this morning, about 30" or so. After lunch my husband and I are going to walk to the Amish farm stand to take them some bags and see what veggies they have today. That's probably about 30" there and back.

Menu is made out for today, except for snacks, but I have plenty of yogurt and some fruit to add if I want. Yesterday my afternoon snack was pina colada yogurt that I added frozen blueberries to. I "MMMM'd" the whole time I was eating it !

Sounds like everybody is doing well! Good for you, Felina, cutting out that evening snack. That's something I have trouble doing, even when I've overdone during the day, like I have the last couple of days. I was so bad yesterday, bringing a whole kataifi pie into the house. (Don't ask! It's like a whipped-cream-topped baklava with shredded phyllo for a crust.)

I can't get away with it either, so back on track today!

No exercise today, today's a rest day. Might take a relaxing swim this afternoon.

Menu is made out, just have to add in some healthy snacks. Yesterday I had some peanut butter for my afternoon snack, a rare treat for me since I usually go overboard. Yesterday was no exception. I ate too much, but it was really good ! I made up for the extra calories by eliminating my evening snack.

Vtricia, the idea of reading a biology text on the treadmill is too funny!

Well, I couldn't possibly have planned for and tracked a special birthday dinner in advance--especially when a nice young man orders us a chocolate ganache dessert that is delivered to us after he has left. Couldn't not have some, you know?

I got away with no major weight gain, but I'll be holding my breath over the next few days that there might be a delayed reaction.

Today's exercise - 15" walking video before breakfast, core exercises today, some wii tennis this afternoon

Today' menu is made out. I had my apple dumpling yesterday. It was delicious and I savored every bite! I ate a couple of the tomatoes we got at the farmstand yesterday. They were so good! Having more today, at lunch and dinner.

No junk streak continues.

I've already been clambering around in the attic, getting stuff out to lend to a neighbor, then hauling it down the ladder. Once she picks it up I can start cleaning. I understand why people my age start thinking about getting rid of the big house and moving to a condo, but I still love my house even though cleaning is a never ending job.

yesterday went well. exercise: we walked a bit over 6 miles, taking one last extra leg to reach the 15,000 step goal. thank you fitbit for the motivation to keep on going...

menu - leftover spaghetti sauce made with chard and white beans, served on spelt spaghetti for lunch, kale mango black bean salad for dinner. pressure cooked a batch of chickpeas and made hummus which will be today's lunch, with leftover kale salad for dinner

weight - still not great, hoping it's water retention from the trip.

Today I tracked my food and did yesterday's workout. I'm a little concerned that I'l lagging. I combined my monday and tuesay workouts. I mean, my school schedule is what it is. I guess I've had some days where I didn't want to get sweaty before I went to school. That happened Wednesday.

One funny practical matter is we're far enough into the nutrition book that it will stay open on the treadmill book stand, so that's helpful. And Nutrition is a subject I enjoy enough to read while walking briskly, unlike Chemistry, and my biology book is so thick it would be unwise to use on the treadmill in case it fell and hit my feet.

I already have tonite's stew on. It's a WW recipe that calls for cooking it for an hour, but round needs at least 3 hours at simmer to cook. At least I know how to read and change a recipe (I don't care what it says, spice gets added at high heat) so my WW recipes can feed anyone.

Exercise today - Did 10" elliptical before breakfast, then after breakfast we took our car to the garage, a mile or so away, and walked back. I used my walking poles, the walk was painful for me but I did it! Yay!

Menu - made out this morning. We bought some fresh tomatoes at an Amish farm stand on our walk home plus some apple dumplings. That's my treat for later today since I have extra calories available. Had some blueberries in my cereal this morning, yum!

finally home - not much energy for exercise, a total of about 5miles and 12,000 steps, nice and easy. plus a swim in the river, it's hot here!

nutrition - delicious spaghetti sauce with zucchini, chard, white beans and kalamata olives, right on plan.

weight - well, i know it's high from the trip, but it will be better in a day or so when the water retention wears off.

Well I worked out with my barbells today. It felt really good. It may be my imagination but I swear I can see a muscle on my arm when it's relaxed!!! I see it when it's flexed but never noticed anything when relaxed. My arms haven't lost any inches, not even an 1/8 of an inch. I wonder if its because the muscle just displaces the fat but doesn't get smaller. It does seem like the chicken wings have got a bit less flappy. emoticon

The upper row of cabinets are glass fronted and lighted, and the backs are painted to match the walls. Most people put in 42" uppers, but I put in regular 30" cabinets with the 12" glass front cabinets along the top. There used to be useless soffits along the top and I was glad to get rid of them, put the space to better use. There are no windows in the kitchen so I went with white, even though most people add skylights and use dark wood. I didn't want to spend that much money. I'm glad it's done and I can use my kitchen again! I stuck with my food plan when I was limited to a hot plate and electric skillet, but now I have a stove and an oven and all my pots and pans, and it's fun again!!

Can't believe I haven't checked in!

Pam, good for you--both losing weight and cutting out meds one by one. I did that with the meds, too. You'd be surprised about BBQ. It's just meat, and the sauce isn't as bad as you'd think.

Great on the junk food streak, Felina!

Your kitchen looks wonderful, Nell. Are those "cutouts" supposed to be there. They look cool, either way.

I'm just keepin' on, keepin' on, doing much better with tracking ahead of time.

Exercise today - upper body strength, walking, going to try a different youtube video today

Yesterday I did go for a swim and did some lower body strength exercises, plus I played some wii tennis, just for fun. Love that game !

Lunch today will be bean salad with lettuce and tomato again, dinner will be turkey burger with a side salad. Yesterday I snacked on a small bowl of cherries, blueberries, blackberries and yogurt. I had never tried blackberries before. They were OK but I don't like the seeds in them.

Still going junk food free, coming up on 6 weeks !

we've been in transit, flying back from our summer in sweden, on our way home to winthrop. managed to get our exercise in during the last few days except for the airport day - where we still got 3.66 miles. today we drive back to winthrop and it will depend on how energetic we feel when we get there, but i can imagine that the border collie will see to it that we get at least a couple of miles of walking in this afternoon!

nutrition has not been the best - i tend to eat whatever is offered when traveling, and it feels like too many meals show up by the end of a very long day, but the whole purpose of writing here is (re) committing and that is just what i am doing.

don't know what the scale says, will see when i get home, but it was the lowest of the summer right before we left...
getting back on track...

I guess I'm not ingesting as many cals as I think I am. I have been eating leftover BBQ the last couple of days. I've been making sure not to overeat. I guess it's worked because I dropped a couple of pounds. I don't know if its a permanent loss or just water weight. I guess I will see over time.

I worked out on the Wii Fit for 2 hours today. Time flys when your having fun. emoticon

I went to the doctor today. The main purpose was to get rid of as many meds as I can. Many of them were prescribed by my previous doctor years ago. Now that I've lost so much weight and I exercise so much I wonder if I need them. We stopped 1 effective today. We are going to work at 1 med at a time. I have a schedule to get rid of 6 different meds over the space of about 9 months. I'm so excited. I may have to go back on a couple of them depending on what the blood work says that I will be taking periodically.

Wish me luck and say a prayer now and again emoticon

Thanks all and have a good Day.

Pam emoticon emoticon

Today's exercise - elliptical 10" before breakfast, store walking - 30" +, lower body strength later today and probably a swim this afternoon

Went shopping this morning and picked up some frozen cherries, blueberries and blackberries for snacking. I also have a cantaloupe my Mom gave us. I'm going to throw together a fruit salad for today's snack.

Lunch yesterday and today - bean salad with lettuce, tomato and dressing. One of my favorite lunches. MMMM

Dinner today - turkey dog, roll, baked beans
