I tend to eat by the clock, too.

Like ALISONCHRISTIAN I kind of need the schedule to keep myself on track. Otherwise I end up waiting too long and then getting REALLY HONGRY, which sometimes sets off a binge.

So to play it safe I have 2 meals and 2-3 mini-meals per day.

Never, ever, EVER give up!

From BMI 53 (336 lbs) to under 30. Now aiming for less than 20% body fat.

Hunger is an unreliable indicator of the need for food for me so I have disciplined myself to eat on a schedule. It's not exactly "by the clock" but follows a pattern of 3 meals and two snacks spread out between when I get up and 8:00pm. It is one of the keys to my weight loss and now, maintenance success.

I don't really feel hunger, so I pretty well have to eat by the clock.

The other day, I was out shopping and I forgot that I had had lunch, so I went to the food court and had another lunch! (This can't happen at home, because I write down every mouthful.)

I've had eating only when hungry and stopping when full as goals for a long time, but if I don't eat somewhat by the clock, I get overhungry by the next mealtime and overeat.

I'm always hungry for breakfast, so no problem there. Sometimes I'm not hungry for lunch until 2-2:30. Then we tend to eat a late dinner, at 8:30, which I'm nearly always hungry for. My downfall is an evening snack that I'm never hungry for, except emotionally, lol!

Both - we do have regular meals, but if I feel hungry I first drink water, wait and then go for something healthy.

I try to eat when I'm hungry, but not after 8:00 PM. Sometimes, I need to eat later to get enough calories, but I think I'm going to stop doing that. If I'm not hungry, I'm not going to eat. It just makes more sense to me!

Birgit, I had a tour of a North Sea oil platform once. They work 3 shifts round the clock, so the cafeteria is always open, and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner all day long. Everyone is either coming on or off a shift and is on a different schedule. Imagine running THAT food operation!

We have family members coming and going at many different times depending on work schedules and if the kitchen were ever closed they'd be at the mercy of fast food restaurants, LOL.
We only stock healthy food items in our kitchen, and plenty of them.

TinaJane, I love that phrase "The kitchen is closed." A child rearing counselor told me to use that with my kids when they were little, and I have used it ever since. It works for restaurants, why not home?

I also can't rely on following my hunger cues to eat--even though I know it's not possible that my body needs food all the time, I'd eat every minute of the day if left to my own devices and eating that way is how I got to be 260 pounds. I've tried different food combinations, eliminating certain types of food and emphasizing others, but my huge appetite remains no matter what I do and, for me personally, eliminating certain foods altogether tends to lead to binges. That's why I typically pre-plan my food for the day based on where I want to be with my nutrients, the food I have on hand and what I'm in the mood for (which usually doesn't change from the time I plan everything out to when I eat). I plug everything into my tracker the night before or first thing in the morning and then that's my budget for the day. How I spread it out is up to me and if I change my mind about something I've pre-planned, I just swap it out. Once I've eaten everything I've planned, the kitchen is closed unless I've had a more active day than I had originally thought or I go off track.

When I'm teaching, I follow more of a traditional schedule with my meals out of necessity. I'm currently on vacation and following a training program. I'm not supposed to go more than three hours without eating, so at the moment I pretty much am eating all day, lol!

I had no idea there are people who eat by the clock. Does that not set you up for eating disorders? It means that you sometimes eat when you are not hungry, a pattern I would not want to start. I've always eaten when hungry if possible. Sometimes I can't and have to wait, but I don't think I've ever had to wait too long.

I ate by the clock when I was teaching, because I had to be up by a certain time, lunch was a certain time, etc.

Now that I'm retired, I eat when I'm hungry, don't eat when I'm not hungry, don't eat when DH eats if I'm not hungry. Pretty simple, pretty easy.

Thank you for sharing your patterns and eating habits. I believe I will return to my 3 meals, 1-2 snacks by the clock. It just works for me. I do know I will be tracking my food daily as I have been...keeps me aware of what I can/should eat.

I work a strange schedule but am such a night owl it doesn't bother me to stay up late. So, when I started my diet I ate on my old schedule with a fairly constant time for lunch and dinner, due mostly to eating with my husband who requires (by nature) a regular eating schedule. I eat lunch (or is it breakfast in my world) around noon and dinner around 6. I planned a late night 'snack' from the beginning. I didn't want to get to the end of the day (my former binge time) with no calories left.
I work until 2 or 3 and go to bed about 4 a.m. I usually eat something around 10 p.m. (usually something like yogurt, fruit or a bowl of veggies) and again about 2 a.m. I have popcorn or something, 200 calories or under.

As time goes on I am learning that some types of foods (fruit and protein, for instance) are better eaten in the first part of the day. I am also beginning to require less volume (yes, I have even binged on cabbage).

I get full now on average portions now! Whoopi!
I still overfill from time to time, but I also realize I don't seem to be as ravenous since I am eating smaller meals and snacks and eating the right foods in better balance.

I will probably always have a whacked out schedule so I am adjusting and tweaking as time goes on.

Wiggle room on my weight! Getting consistent with exercise tipped the scales . . . in a good way~just don't think I need to lose any more--just get firm and fit!

If I ate when I was hungry I would eat all the time! I'm always hungry. I happen to like to fast 5 with my window 1till 6 because I think being hungry until a certain time teaches you to say no to yourself. A good lesson. I can pass on any food with this plan. It would be very difficult for people with families to feed, but I just have me. Dh does his own thing most of the time.

i do a little of both' I try and eat 3 meals and 2-3 small snacks a day and so i try and eat on a regular 3 hr. bases. I vary the amount of each meal or snack based on my hunger and where and what i'm doing at the time. So breakfast is usually my largest meal and the rest vary on my hunger. I always make sure to stay within my calorie range and get in a least 60-80 grams of protein.

I too, eat by the clock and I'm usually pretty hungry when meal time rolls around. The thing that surprises the heck out of me is how I will eat at meal time even when I'm not really all that hungry. "IT's MEAL TIME!" my left brain tells me. "Time to eat!"

I try to pre-track at least breakfast and lunch every day and I have a rule that I don't eat after dinner and that doesn't seem to be too difficult to stick with.

Once I spent about a month following this dictum:

Eat when you are hungry
Eat what you want
Savor every bite
Stop when you are full

I lost weight, too. It is actually a wonderful way to eat - but ... it requires that you be there ... in the moment ... every moment. I don't know if it was because I was too lazy, too scatter brained, or what but I found it was actually easier and in the end, more efficient to eat by the clock.

Believe it
Do it
Become it

My husband and I keep to a regular schedule of 3 meals and 2 snacks. We're usually hungry for each meal - breakfast6:30, lunch 12:00 and supper 5:00 with snacks midmorning and mid-afternoon. Our supper is usually just fruit and yogurt.

I try to keep an eye on the clock. Sometimes if I am not hungry, I will try to eat at least a little something. Some lean protein or some fruit or vegetables. My mind may not think that I am hungry, but if I don't eat something, then, when I truly DO get hungry, I will overeat before I know it!

I eat by the clock because I cannot rely on my own senses to tell me if, or how much, I'll need to eat. My own self discipline fails if I allow myself to eat between meals. I can't tell you that my way is the right way, just that I discovered the 3 meal discipline to be effective for me.

Barb, I tend to eat by the clock, but I am usually hungry too. When I didn't eat as much, I actually gained weight, so I think that this is working for me. I do stay within the calorie range allowed for me.
When you eat when you are hungry, do you eat all of your calories, or do you come under? Be careful if you are coming under your range.

When you eat late at night, is it right before bedtime? That is not good, and a lot of doctors recommend eating at least a couple of hours before you go to bed to allow food to digest.

I am not sure how much of a breakfast you are eating, but if it is a lot, it might make you so full that you are not hungry until the evening. If so, can you eat less, and then consume smaller meals throughout the day?
(Case in point - every now and again I go to brunch at a local restaurant and I get so full that I usually don't eat anything until the evening, and even that is usually a small portion)

I was eating by the clock and decided to try eating when I am hungry to see how well that would work for me. I still plan my menu out each morning and have breakfast, but it goes "down hill" from there. I have found that I do not feel hungry again until mid afternoon and after that late night. I no longer get my snacks in and I don't like eating just before going to bed. Any input will be appreciated.
