One thing my surgeon was adamant about was that my weight be steady after surgery. Weight won't come and go in the accustomed manner afterwards. Best get to your desired weight first.

I've thought about starting a "plastic surgery fund" since it would probably take a couple of years to save up the amount of money it would cost to have the work done...and I wouldn't want to do it unless I had a couple of years of maintenance in.

We'll see how I feel when I reach that bridge.

Age and sun are killers to skin. Elasticity fails quickly over the years after 30. There is not much you can do about aging skin. I sit next to my 12 year old and 8 year old granddaughters, and boy is the difference obvious. Appreciate your skin you young people!!

I was hoping my skin would tighten up on its own? I feel like my weight-loss was in the moderate range ( 68 pounds at this point ) and I have the body type that like to spread weight fairly evenly all over so I didn't have one area that was all that much bigger than the rest, though my tummy was the pretty big & I have had one child so I doubt I'll ever have a phenomenal tummy area but that's ok. if I can at least get the top half looking all toned and sex I'll be happy LOL and I am almost there, some days I can see the beginning of a six pack right under my ribs, I love it!!! actually the skin I hate most at this point it around my behind LOL

Thanks for sharing!

Having been chicken to even investigate skin removal so far, I really appreciate you and others speaking up about this on that team.

Hearing from people who have done it helps me separate the hype and the stigma seen elsewhere from the actual reality.

Never, ever, EVER give up!

Hi everyone! I am 8 days post-op of a abdominalplasty (tummy tuck), body contouring (aka lioposuction) of the flanks and lower back, breast lift and breast augmentation. I have a couple blogs on my sparkpage to check out if you are seriously considering cosmetic surgery.

I did all this for me. I needed to see what I feel inside; healthy and strong. This surgery has enabled me to get to the next level. Expensive? Absolutely. There are ways to pay for it which I have listed in this message board post: www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_mes

Celia, Pradaxa is approved in this country for atrial fibrillation, which my husband does not have. It has been in use in Europe for several years as a better (if more expensive) substitute for warfarin, for everything. His doctor prescribed it "off label" because his INR was completely unstable. When he broke his leg, his INR was 5.8. The length of time it took to bring it down allowed the leg to swell so badly that they couldn't operate anyway for over 3 weeks. We took his INR daily, and kept adjusting the dose and it just never worked out. No idea why. Just at that time Pradaxa came on to the market so we jumped at it.

My tummy is really crepey when I do anything the requires me suspending myself above the ground. If the option to see my tummy is there, I just don't look down.

Thanks, Nell. I'm aware there are other drugs out there, but their use as warfarin substitutes is not without limitation. My condition doesn't qualify me for Pradaxa, according to my doctor. And I have taken Lovenox several times for dental surgery. In the good old days, the oral surgeon would just say, "Go off your warfarin for three days before the surgery." Now it's a huge production. I have to see my PCP to let him know I need the surgery and have him prescribe the Lovenox (fortunately, my PCP doesn't make me go back to the hematologist anymore, because I've been through the process so many times). Then I have the week before of going off warfarin and on injected Lovenox and stopping it at the right time, then the mix of Lovenox and warfarin after surgery as I rebuild the warfarin level in my bloodstream, and weaning off Lovenox. Wow, I have it memorized. Anyway, several years ago, there was a very promising drug in development, but the FDA decided the risks outweighed the benefits, so I'm still waiting for an all-purpose warfarin replacement.

There ARE substitutes for warfarin. My hubby switched over to Pradaxa because he just couldn't get his INR stabilized. In any case, if you are having surgery of any kind, you'd need to go on Lovenox for a week prior and after. Once again, it's expensive but it can be done.

I checked out the surgery for a thigh lift. They cut along under your buttocks and all the way around between your legs and yank the skin up then sew it back up. Recovery is, as you might imagine, really tough. It would be hard to move, yet you still have to go to the bathroom, a nightmare in a situation with open wounds. I couldn't imagine going through that for cosmetic reasons.

I've been thinking about a tummy tuck, but I thought I would not be a candidate for the surgery because I'm on a large dose of warfarin long-term (as in the rest of my life or until the FDA gets off its prodigious @$$ and approves a drug that is not rat poison). However, my doctor surprised me by saying okay! Need to save my shekels, but first, I want face work done.

I've also been considering having the bat wings clipped, but for now, as long as I keep my arms down, they aren't too visible. One thing that shocked me was the skin on my thighs. I know it's saggy, but when I did a down dog in shorts the other day, I was repulsed by the crepe-iness of the skin...blech!

Me, too. It's the main reason I almost got a tummy tuck. Other than that, there really isn't anything that fixed it.

It's a battle scar from child-bearing. I'd rather have my kids than the tight abs.

I'm 63 and I'm here to tell you that gravity WILL take its toll. My stomach skin is soft but there is no fat there; I wear a size 00 (in today's sizes; it would have been a 6 30 years ago) and won't be losing any more weight. But who wants to see Grandma's belly anyway? I like my tank tops in summer because I'm not fond of extreme air conditioning, but clothing is my friend.

After surgery there are scars, you just have to figure out if it's worth the pain to get rid of. I have a friend who lost over 200 pounds and kept getting infections under the huge folds of skin hanging down. She had them removed and feels like a new woman now. To her it's worth every scar to get rid of it. It's a very personal decision, and the only opinions that count are yours and your doctor's.

Going4Healthy- Stttttrrrrreeeeettttccccchhhh up tall! Takes up the slack! (I practiced in the mirror before getting the photos done.) And you notice I'm wearing jeans? Helps with not having to worry about anything gravity is sending to the lower regions of my abdominal area.

A tummy tuck has been in the back of my mind. I have never had surgery if any type - thank God! So, I probably won't ever do it due to fear. I also have a low tolerance for pain and the thought of pain is scary. And of course, the cost. I have one daughter in college and a son that will be going to college next year.

Great topic--thanks for this! I also have loose skin, mostly around my lower stomach but also a bit of batwing. Although it bugs me, most people never know it's there because I've learned to conceal it much of the time like Nancy. I've considered plastic surgery--even went for a consultation after my last big loss--but decided I didn't want the big scar and that I should just do my best with what I've got. I don't want to lose any more weight because then I'll start looking gaunt and will lose the rest of my chest, so I'm leaving it in good nutrition and strength training's hands from here on out!

My name's Tina. I lost more than 90 pounds between March 2010 and March 2012 and have been keeping if off ever since.

My lower tummy has always been my trouble area. I've had one baby and countless yo-yo travels, so there is a bit of loose skin. But, considering all I've put my body through, I really can't complain much, as my tummy has zero stretch marks, and with getting my body fat % down so low, the skin on my tummy is quite thin, now.

Nancy, I really admire your honesty (and bravery!) in sharing your photos on your blog. emoticon Now...can you teach me how to pose!! emoticon

I had my batwings removed. Or rather sucked out and repaired, and I am very happy with the result. My arms don't look like a teenager's would at my weight, but I am glad I can wear tank tops comfortably. I say if you want it and can afford it, go for it. Just be sure to get a good surgeon. It IS surgery after all.

Thanks for the link to the team. I might wander over and browse. Now, two years into maintenance, for the first time I brought up the subject with my doctor today. He examined my loose skin, my muscle tone, etc. and said he would give me some names if I asked, of surgeons he trusts here in town or the next bigger city over. He said my legs don't seem to need it, but I'd be an excellent candidate for a tummy tuck if I wanted to pursue that.

For me, it's a question of cost/benefit... I'm sure at this point, since I don't have serious medical issues being caused by it, it would be all on my own dime. And sorry, but I have other things to spend my money on. I'm 59, for heaven's sake. Might be different if I *did* have medical issues or if I were a great deal younger.

Hi guys,

I know some people have had questions here and there about whether and how to do skin removal.

Just thought I'd let you know about a team I found that addresses just that topic, and has members who have done it:

www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/groups_i
nd
ividual.asp?gid=51351

I'm personally too chicken to consider it - yet. But I like knowing there are a group of those folks who have gone through it so if/when I get to that point I'll know whom to ask!

Never, ever, EVER give up!
