What a wonderful random act of kindness. I think that will be my resolution. Practice random acts of kindness whenever I see an opportunity.

Giving is definitely better than receiving. I was waiting to meet a friend for lunch and I noticed an older man wearing a VFW hat, eating alone. I picked up his ticket, anonymously. I had the waitress tell him that another customer wanted to say thanks for the service to his country. He looked surprise as he left. I just hope he had someone to spend Christmas with!

Even though I wasn't brought up in the South, I've lived here a long time now. Greeting people on the street, even in a city, is pretty much ingrained by now. Greeting the custodians at school is standard, too. And greeting each student (internationals from around the world) I see in the lobby when I go in is important, I know. Because once a student from South America wrote a journal entry about how many of the teachers ignore the students when they aren't in class!

So it's hard to think of regular on greetings and a smile as gifts. But that's a nice thought.

Started at 138, aiming for 125. Got there, and 120 seemed possible. Got THERE, and 118 seemed possible. Got THERE, and 115 seemed possible. And that's where I want to stay. Maintain, maintain, maintain.

Thanks for reminding me how easy it is to give just a greeting to someone as you pass by. A smile can almost do the same thing.

The gift I give myself each day is 30 min. of yoga and an hour of Jazzercise 3 days a week.
The gift I give my husband is encouragement and appreciation for all the help he gives me in preparing meals and finding new low-cal recipes. The gift I give strangers is a smile and a greeting such as "Good morning" or "Merry Christmas".

Every day I get in my walking. That is for myself, and I feel so much better when I take the time to do that.

I am in pretty constant contact with members of my family. This week my son-in-law is hot to go to Sam's (on my membership card)...I promised him a trip after the holidays. He is so good to me that this is one thing I can do for him.

I sent a note with my yearly "tip" to the paper carriers . They are the best carriers everybody ever had, and I tell them so! One year, during a traffic stopping snowstorm, they delivered by snowmobile!!

I make sure that at least once a week I spend quality time with our horse, either riding or training or just taking her for a walk. Her calm and peaceful mindset is contagious. emoticon
I try to call my parents who live thousands of miles away at least once a week. We usually talk over Skype.
With strangers I mostly try to take opportunities as they present themselves. I try to be intentional about leaving good tips since most people who rely on them make very little money to start with. I know that in today's economy I could easily be in their job tomorrow.

You can talk to God all you want and that's great, but the changes happen when you start listening to him.

BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN OTHERS.

One thing I do for me every week is go to a yoga class. I do yoga at home, but practicing with others is so good for me.
For family members... at least once a week I text my daughter a message of support and love.
For strangers.... whenever I receive good service anyplace, I ask for the manager and tell her/him about the wonderful service I received.

Here is the idea. I strongly believe that "it is more blessed to give than to receive", not even in a religious sense, but in a very practical sense. To give generously from our abundance can be a very important tool for our own emotional and mental well-being and thereby also our physical well-being. It is a powerful tool to maintain health which is why I thought this would be a good challenge for the maintenance team.
I also believe that the quality of our giving has a lot more to do with meeting real needs rather than wants (which we so often focus on around the holidays). This could be material things but often it's not. It could be an ability we have, it could be words of encouragement, friendship, practical help etc.
So here is my challenge for those who would like to participate:
Try to find
- one thing every week you do for yourself (that is good for you)
- one thing every week you do for a family member or friend
- one thing every week you do for a complete stranger

Share any experiences you make as a result with us.
