That's a great article. It describes me perfectly. I felt like a thin person long after I'd gained weight and was often surprised to catch sight of myself in the mirror and discover I was actually a fattie. Now that I'm thin again, I feel fat. I've had to buy an entire new wardrobe because nothing fitted any more and buying clothes in my current size feels daring. The first time I went clothes shopping, I bought clothes that were a size too big, because I couldn't bring myself to buy the smaller size I needed - even though the person in the mirror was wearing that size, my head wouldn't believe it.

Very interesting article. It confirms to me that it's better to monitor one's shape by looking in the mirror a lot to get used to the new outline rather than stepping on the scales which don't show the difference between fat and muscle. It also highlights the importance of not relying on diet alone but to increase muscle through ongoing vigorous exercise to reduce the amount of sagging skin as much as possible.

I guess adjusting to the new size after weight lose, is not a hot topic in the media.
I too want to stay in the 5% maintenance club. It gets a little lonely, when getting on with life. Every one gets use to you being more fit. No more way to go comments or how did you do it. You don't have to explain the way you achieve this feat, in creating a new body .
The unsung heroes of not being obese any more , still work as hard keeping in check.
Maybe the 5% club won't make it in magazines, TV, or the internet , but I know we are here.
Keep on moving and adjusting to the new life style size

Interesting article. This is one of the reasons I always take a friend with me when I go clothes shopping. I never see how I really look in clothes, and that's ok as long as I have an extra pair of trusted eyes with me, to get me to buy the right thing....and keep me from buying the impulse idiocy that I'd recognize later and never wear.

good morning
Life is good as you make it.
I am still looking at a completely new person in that mirror. My mind still and probably will ,who knows, how long to readjust my inner image of myself to what I see in that mirror. It is still a wow effect. I don't have a twenty year old's body, but for the first time in over 25 years I don't have a stomach hanging over the belt and the belt is at my waist not holding on for dear life below it. As like you all playing with calorie amounts that matches the burn. At 4.75 mo. of maintaining. I have given 97 percent of my old fat clothes away. Slowly getting more clothes to fit me. Even the summer clothes have to go. That means shopping for me. Me shopping?
Well lets keep up the new habits, and never go back the way we were.

If you stay at goal long enough, the styles will go out before you outgrow them. Last year I found jackets with giant shoulder pads that still fit. They would only be good for a theme party or costume ball, but they do fit. And will look wonderful on a poor person shopping the Salvation Army store.

Barb, I am so with you. I'm hoping, NO! - planning to be the same size in one month, then two months, then three----I will have a big celebration if - NO! - when in one year's time I can still say I am at goal. SparkPeople is the big difference to me that was not there in previous efforts.

That's what I'm looking forward to! "get a thrill when I still fit my maintaining clothes"... I hope that a year from now these pants still fit. That they fit through the winter!

I guess to me, size has been a "temporary" thing... I was always going up or down. I sometimes kept my "skinny" clothes until the next time I got "skinny"... but these numbers and sizes... I haven't been in my adult life. Or if I was it was (size inflation) it would have been between high school and college and that phase was VERY temporary.

I would like to be able to wear "skinny" clothes until they wear out, if you know what I mean, rather than "growing" out of them. Hopefully, hanging out with this team will help me stay with the program!

Wow, awesome feeling and problem to have in a way. I'm only a week into my goal weight and trying to get used to my new size for the past while. Gone from a 20-22 to a size 8 or size small. Not quite believing it and still absorbing it. Not caring if it takes me a long time to adjust I think because perhaps it will keep me thinking about all the hard work it took me to get here.

Regardless of vanity sizing, it takes a lot to realize that you are in progressively smaller clothes. I recently wore a pair of size 10 petite suede pants I saved from twenty years ago...they fit in the waist but were were big everywhere else. The legs were closer to palazzo pants than boot cut. LOL

Reached my goal November 2009!

Size inflation is another whole topic. My mother's wedding dress was a size 16. By the time my sister wore it at her wedding, it would have been a size 8 or 10. Now, I'm pretty sure it would be a six. Sigh.

You are right about having to try on each garment... which, in my book, is a pain. I hate shopping for clothes... then and now.

Nell, you are right. I'm also old enough to have a few clothes of the old size 8 and 10 from 20 years ago that are like sizes 4 and 6 now. What is now usually a size 0 used to be a 4 and so on. Good to keep in mind that our society's standard for what's normal has changed a lot.

I was fat when I was too poor to do much clothes buying and made all my clothes. I wore a pattern size 16. Back then I also wore a clothing size 16.

Then I lost weight, down to a pattern size 12, and a clothing size 8.

I have in my closet some clothes I bought in 1980 in a size 8. They are tight on me. But when I shop now I have to wear a size 2. I am still a pattern size 12.

Numbers change, and they change differently for every style of every manufacturer, I think every year. You have to try on each and every garment. Between vanity sizing and foreign manufacture, there is no standardization anywhere. Even the so-called 30inch inseam may not actually be 30".

Over a year and half down the road, I still can not believe that I wear 4s and 6s! The crazy thing is that at White House | Black Market, I wear a 4 on bottom and a 10 on top.

I'm still getting used to being a size 6 mentally but I haven't tried to wear a size bigger. I still haven't gotten rid of some of the 10's thinking in the winter they would be useful for layering. Well, I guess it hasn't gotten THAT cold so I should take those to the thrift store now. Thanks for the reminder.

I had an experience yesterday and today that has me wondering: how long has it taken long-term maintainers to adjust to the new size they have become?

Here's what happened: I needed a couple of pairs of slacks to wear to work. Nothing fancy, just some khaki casual slacks. So, I walked to the big box store, and since I'd been walking over four miles, didn't want to try them on. I bought two pair of size 8's thinking I didn't dare go smaller. I knew my 10's were way too sloppy big (they USED to be my skinny pants).

Some of you are way ahead of me. After I got home and showered I tried on the pants... and I was seriously swimming in them. I've always thought of single-digit sizes as beyond my reach... heck, 12's were "skinny" to me, ever since high school.

This morning I drove back to the store and tried on a six, and a four. The fours fit comfortably... the sixes could probably handle tucking in a sweater.

So... how long does it really take to believe you are this size? Because it doesn't feel natural, and I've been here since last August.
