I'M 5;4 SMALL BONE, Petite Frame. I burn on average
500 to 700 calories every day. I do 130 minutes work out. For me 1600 to 1900 calories is my max. I could
do more, but don't have a large appetite. I very rarely go over 1500 calories a day. That as worked for me for 55 years. WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT.

Interesting thread. Thanks for sharing information. I guess this shows why we have calorie ranges rather than set numbers - and also that we're all a bit different. After all the weight range for a 'normal' BMI is quite wide so I suppose it's a case of finding what's realistic and healthy. Thanks again.

I'm 5'4" goal range is 135-130. I tried going lower, but just couldn't stay there. I'm really active but I don't track anymore, so I'd have to estimate I'm between 1800-2200 calories on any given day, and burn around 2000 calories a week.

It really does depend on a lot of factors, and I've seen folks that workout more so they can eat more, and others who don't. I'm sure muscle vs fat % has a lot to do with it too, as well as hormonal and metabolic differences.

I am 5'1.2" short with a large frame.

My calorie range tends to be higher due to my cardio calorie burn daily.

It's helpful to read what others are doing. My calorie range is between 1390 and 1740 calories a day but I seem to put on weight if I go over about 1400 a day. I'm 5' 4" with a goal weight of 126 lb. I went down to 123 lb and am now varying between 123 and 125 lb. I track food and exercise as carefully as I can.

Are other people's calorie ranges higher because they're taller or are team members very active?

No. I put my actual fitness minutes into my Fitness Goals and it upped my range to 2200-2500 daily.

But, I check daily against my calories burned to be sure I am on target. I try to keep myself within 100 either way of the mark.

I do average 2200-2500 calories eaten and burn 500-700 daily and have maintained within 2 lbs for 3 months now. When the scale gets to 121.9 I go for the deficit. When the scale gets to 120.0 I go for a negative deficit to stay about 121.

I believe I missed the message to increase my calories to maintain???

My low was 1240 originally and then when I hit a plateau I recalculated what I was burning and it increased me to a low of 1340 and the scale started moving. Most days I am under 1340 as I got so used to consuming around 1240.

I did not increase my calorie intake and have been on maintenance a month now. however one weekend I consumed more than I should have and picked up 2 pounds, but I have since dropped those.

I would say everyone is different and you do not necessarily have to increase to maintain.

Finding the right range is tuff! I still go back and forth. The range you stated seems pretty low though! Mine is 1700 to 2000ish to maintain. If I eat at the lowest end I still lose, but if I eat at the higher end too long I will gain. You just have to play with it and see what works for you. It may be a good idea to get your thyroid checked just to rule that out, Good luck! emoticon

I don't know why some folks stabilize at a lower calorie level than others. I found when I upped my calories I ended up losing more weight (like others have) and then I hear of lots of people who ended up having to stay in a low range (like yourself) to maintain.

I've read some articles about hypothyroidism contributing to that phenomenon, so you may want to look into that (or some other health reason) but if it isn't that, it may just be that your body doesn't need as many calories.

I'm 62 and although I do a fair bit of exercise I have a pretty low calorie intake of about 1500 - 1700. I can occassionally have a higher day but can't do it all the time. I don't know why.
Here are a couple of Spark sites that might be helpful:

Hope this helps.

did anyone experience an initial weight gain when increasing their calories to maintenance level? i've been in maintenance for 2 or 3 months now, and i increased slowly (about 50 calories a week) and it was fine at first, but when i got to the mid to upper 1500 cal. per day (my maintenance range is supposed to be 1580-1940) i gained a couple of pounds back. and looking back though my nutrition notes, i saw that higher number on the scale for a couple of weeks. is this normal?? i just feel frustrated b/c i've dropped my calories back down to low to mid 1400 cal. a day, and my weight is stabilizing, but i'm 'supposed' to be able to eat considerably more & still maintain.

i'd love to hear other maintainers thoughts on this & the calorie range you're maintaining in?

*also, i've been on SP for about 2 years now, follow a pretty healthy diet & still work out 3-4x a week. however, before that i struggled for years with yo yo dieting. i'm wondering if this has played some role, even now in my trouble with maintenance?? have i permanently screwed up my metabolism? or would it have leveled out by now? emoticon for input!!
