MNJONES2 sorry for the delay in my response, here a article about how Yoga helps to relieve knee pain and a 2-min video with Rodney Yee showing a short vinyasa to help relieve knee pain.

"Whether you're out to guard against injury and disease or regain strength and flexibility after an injury, yoga can be a superb antidote to knee trouble. "Yoga is fantastic for the knees, especially for people recovering from damaged ligaments," says Michael Salveson, who has worked on dozens of yoga students during his 33-year tenure as a Rolfer in Berkeley, California. "Yoga increases the stabilizing action of the leg's big muscles." When the inner and outer quadriceps are equally strong, he adds, they exert an equal pull on the ligaments, which keeps the kneecap in alignment".

Hint for teddy bear headstand (a.k.a. clown pose):

This was old advice from my former (I'd rejected a long time ago, but not because of his teachings) Master Teacher ... sandwich a folded 3x or 4x Mexican blanket between your mat folded to the point where, once your arms are in position for this pose, the palm of your hand is resting on the blanket, and your fingers are on the mat.

With your head at the optimum balance point (not necessarily at your hairline - the way to test this is to balance a book on your head ... so you get that point at which the book touches the head.

The knees are very much a part of THIS pose--the mat positioning recommendation was due to my inflexible wrists [of course, this had been 3 years ago, when I had not had anywhere near the arm strength needed for this pose!] ... if ever I get to the full expression of this headstand, the knee which is sick would probably hyperextend well beyond normalcy as a defense against torquing or pain ...

Ok, that could be a recommendation for the pose of the day:

Teddy bear headstand

But probably not today ...

Now sandwiched between salutations of all sorts, and my intensive corework (no navasana with kapalabhati breathing - so last year for me) ... knee- pain-lessening sequence.

I forget this at my peril, so I have to write this down (and DO it):

Cow-face pose, each side, count of 8 breath-cycles
Cobbler's pose, count of 8 breath-cycles
Supine pigeon pose (or baby in the cradle pose), each side, count of 8 breath-cycles
Tree pose, each side, count of 10 breath cycles (or more)

The core sequence has pilates mat moves, but I make sure not to do the straight-leg supine pilates moves in what is essentially my yoga practice that has plenty of pilates in it ...

Otherwise, if you absolutely insist on doing traditional pigeon - well, anyone with MY problem - has to ease into it, possibly riding their way into pigeon atop a block (cannot torque one of my knees with any weight or resistance on it, without excruciating pain!) ...

Other poses cannot have weight on the kneeCAP without a very stable, horizontal arm base which probably would not cause the knee to want to be torqued or repositioned ... talking any arm balances or inversions which are like that ... Not advanced enough for some of them, and that knee doesn't mind ...

Lost the ablity to do wheel pose when I developed a trick knee ...

I have a sequence of backbends that fulfills the intention, however ..

Oh, and I reintroduced Garland pose, even though it's wide-stance and not very deep ... due to the same knee issue ...

For strength, and to cross train with my mat pilates classes at the pilates studio ...

My pose of the day - Plow

After months of not being able to and sticking with it - I can finally get my feel on the mat with straight legs. It usually takes me 30 minutes of vinyasa style to do it or at least 60 minutes of hatha to get there, but I can get there.

I've been practicing a sequence which is often included in my class. I find it more than challenging:

1.) Supta Padangusthasana / Reclining Big Toe Pose
2.) Utthita Hasta Padangustasana / Extended Hand-To-Big-Toe Pose (with a strap)
3.) Virabhadrasana III / Warrior III / Airplane Pose
4.) Ardha Chandrasana / Half Moon Pose
5.) Then I grab my extended foot with my extended hand. What is that called, I wonder?

My pose for the day is: Forward fold

My sequence is simple and for my back and legs - repeating these two moves together a few times:
exhale forward fold
inhale half standing forward bend
Repeat
