Hi John,

You can use Yoga for Dummies to start to learn Yoga. I do suggest at some point you try a class. You can't see your alignment, and a good instructor will help you fine tune your alignment, help you modify your poses for where you are that day, and show you how to start your own practice.

I teach. Before I taught, I used Yoga for Dummies. I still recommend it to new folks. The alignment is great, it is fantastic at building strength. In fact I used it after I was recovering from an abdominal surgery. IN fact, I showed it to my phyical therapist. He was impressed with the poses and how much pain relief it gave me without narcotics. There is a portion in that program for breath exercise and begining meditation, both are great for stress relief.

I hope that helps,
andrea

Every day find a little time for yourself, even if it is only 15 minutes, as long as that time is just for you. Better yet is if that time is fun.

Hello everyone! I am John a total newbie. Is it possible to learn yoga from DVDs or do I have to have real-life, personal instruction? Is anyone using Beginning Yoga for Dummies? I choose yoga to develop coping skills rather than physical conditioning.

I just rented Suzanne Deason's Yoga For Weight Loss.
It seems great so far! I really like that there are normal-sized women, and that they allow for different levels. There are 4 different women you can follow with different modifications for each.

I also rented Rodney Yee's Power Yoga, because it was there... but I don't think I'm quite ready for the power variety yet! :P

I have a few yoga dvd's that I really like and I think are good for beginners...
Sara Ivanhoe's 20 min yoga makeover series
Baron Baptiste Core Power 1
and also a Yoga & Pilates 4 DVD set that has a beginner's yoga workout.
I got most of them on ebay.

Currently I am using You Can Do Yoga by Leslie Sansone. It is great for absolute beginners like me and has gotten me more interested in yoga. I just got a new DVD today and I'm excited. It's by BodyWisdomMedia called Yoga Complete For Every Body and is taught by JJ Gormley. It has over 35 routines for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. There are options for shorter or longer routines and even specific needs for the day.

I like Gaiam's Yoga Conditioning for Weight Loss because it shows the different levels of an asana.
A good book is Ashtanga Yoga The Practice Manual by David Swensen.

Darn. It looks like this cd is out of print. I'm still going to put it on my wishlist but odds are nobody will get it for me because they won't want to buy it second hand.

I guess it makes sense--dvds are bound to sell better than cds. Still, I am really enjoying finding new ways of practicing with these cds. The descriptions for the asanas are clearer than I have heard on some yoga dvds. They would have to be because the listener can't look at the cd player to see what the instructor is doing. I have borrowed a few dvds where I had to constantly look at the screen to understand what the instructor was doing.

But thank you so much! I was beginning to despair that I was alone in seeking out practice cds and I truly appreciate the recommendation. Maybe someone will just give me an amazon.com gift certificate and I can buy myself a secondhand/remainder copy that way.

I have a few Anusara Yoga audio CD's and DVD's. I had attended a few months of classes and fell in love with the Anusara phylosophy of effort and surrender, organic energy and muscular energy and proper alignment.

Yesterday I did Anusara Yoga Essentials with John Friend and today I feel like my muscles were pulled off the bone and pasted back on! I had not done this one hour seession in about 6 months. I recommend this audio cd - it has an insert with all the poses, a Sanskrit prayer, nice background music. Love it!

My favorites are Quick Fix Yoga and Quick Fix Power Yoga. These have 4 - 10 minutes segments that you can mix and match. They are great and convenient when short on time.

Favorite book is the Yoga Journals Yoga Book. It has tons of beautiful pictures.

Great for begainers:

Yoga for Dummies, More Yoga for dummies.
They are books, VHS and DVDs.

They explain each one and a little about the pose. The instructor , i think her name is sara, also gives modifications and support... a must for newbies.

Don't forget to be awesome.

I want to preface this by saying I am not looking for music cds. I have plenty.

I am, however, looking for recommendations for yoga cds which lead the listener through a yoga practice. I have a few (very few) and I like them enough to want more. The ones I have include:

OM Yoga in a Box by Cindy Lee
Bliss in a Box (although I don't love this practice quite as much)
Detox in a Box (I haven't actually tried the practices on this one yet but I probably will without doing the detox)
and
Gentle Yoga Kit by Stephen Cope

I also have Richard Freeman's Pranayama practice.

So is anyone aware of any other practice cd's out there?

TROPHYWIFE2B, yogatoday.com hosts a rotation of yoga practices, some that do not use props at all. They post a new video every day. Yesterday's is for beginners and focuses on alignment.

Also, you may want to think outside the box a bit. If you do not have a strap, do you have a long scarf? Or you can try using a towel or pillowcase.

If you don't have a block, do you have an empty coffee canister, one of those larger ones? Or maybe a family sized hot chocolate one? These are about the same height as a block when it is raised to its highest.

Also, yogajournal.com has tips on most of the primary asanas including safe modifications.

I'm looking for a yoga DVD that is calming (vs fitness) and is prop-less. I have a great one but it seems I need a block, a strap, a pillow, a wall...it's frustrating watching the DVD while I wait for the next position that I can do. Any suggestions?

PS - Very Beginner here.

Yesterday I received a sampler dvd of Jason Crandell's Yoga for Morning, Noon, & Night. The dvd only includes the morning practice.

This practice is more vigorous than Rodney Yee's AM Yoga and I probably couldn't do this one on a bad vertigo day but I definitely enjoyed working through it this morning and am more interested in checking out the full version of the dvd.

My one word of caution is that he doesn't really accommodate for those less flexible students. He mentions using a block or placing the hand on the shin AFTER doing one side of triangle pose already so it isn't until you are on the second side that modifications are suggested. If you are not familiar with how to modify and are new to yoga, you may want to hold off on checking out this dvd until you know when to use a yoga block to help you sink into the asana.

Other than that, I thought it was a good 20 mins practice. (I still prefer Yee's AM Yoga but Crandell's did make me sweat a little so they complement one another nicely.)

I've mentioned this before, but my DVD player had messed up for awhile. The other day I finally managed to do the entire workout. And Yoga for Your Pregnancy, put out by Yoga Journal and Lamaze, is absolutely great. I felt relaxed and rejuvenated, and a cramp that I had been feeling for days finally stretched out. It is a fantastic prenatal yoga workout if you know any pregnant ladies who want to do yoga at home. It even includes tips for labor. LOVE IT!!! :)

My new favorite is Shiva Rea Creative Core Abs. The best part is you can try it free before you buy it.

Another great one I tried recently is Yoga Fitness Fusion with Angie Stewart on Exercise TV

My #1 all time favorite is Ashtanga Yoga Flow with Nico Luce of my yoga online. I also love his Inner Fire Flow (both level 4). Watch him for free too. www.bellaonline.com/articles/art2268

Found a great new video from Yoga Journal that has three, twenty-minute long routines developed for AM, afternoon and PM. My other two videos are starting to collect dust. This has helped me work yoga in to every day instead of fumbling around for something in between classes.

I love the AM/PM Yoga DVD. I use that one everyday but mostly just for stress relief. When I want a bit of a workout I use my MTV Yoga DVD. It wasn't around for very long but I'm glad I snagged it. It's about 5 years old but it never gets old. I have a couple other DVDs that I don't use often. I will use them whenever I get bored or need some fresh ideas for creating my own yoga series.

Thanks Bob037. I have one that's 60 min, one that's 30 min and one that has various lengths on it. The 30 min one is the one I do the most right now but do the 60 min one on the weekends when I have more time.

I have several yoga DVDs (not at home, so can't get an exact count). Which one I use depends on how much time I have at that particular practice and what I feel like doing. The ones I use most are the Rodney Yee AM Yoga (the sequence that's on the AM/PM DVD) and his new AM Yoga For Your Week which has 5 sequences I tend to cycle through over the course of the week as my morning wake-up yoga. In the evenings, I mostly do my own sequences without DVDs.

(And I'll go back to doing that when my leg heals!)

Question to all.

How many yoga DVDs do you have?

How do you rotate thru them? Meaning, do one for a week then switch off or switch off daily?

Journey from the Center to the Page by Jeff Davis is a book about how yoga practice helps with writing, drawing both on the spiritual and physical aspects of the yogic discipline to help infuse personal writing and creative writing with greater strength and honesty. I was pleasantly surprised by this book which I bought on a whim without having heard anything about the content or author. Perhaps one of the best books on writing I've read in a while and one that will be a permanent addition to my collection alongside Writing Down the Bones.

I've been using The Firm: Power Yoga and love it. The only down fall is she doesn't say what all the poses are but she gives good enough instruction I can now do it my just listening.

It would be most ideal to visit a local yoga studio to practice with a professional who could ensure that you are performing the poses safely. This may be expensive, so I think the best alternative would be a DVD and you could visit a local bookstore for that and a book for beginning yoga practitioners. The local library may even even DVDs or books that you could check out for FREE. If you know anyone who has practiced yoga for some time, it would benefit you to consult with them in order to get help understanding a pose or you feel that you are not reaching the objective of a particular pose. Hope this helps. . .

What would be a good way to start yoga for the first time? A book? A DVD? How does one get motivated?

I stopped smoking in early Dec 2008. I found out my TSH was 25.388H on April 10, 2009. I'm pondering the connection and if there is one.
In Aug 2009 I gave up my 30 yr Caffeine addiction and I'm watching my sodium. I feel much better now.

For a book that addresses yoga philosphy, I highly recommend 'Meditations from the Mat: Daily Reflections on the Path of Yoga' by Rolf Gates & Katrina Kenison. Good stuff!

I love my yoga video's. I use them when I don't really feel like going to the gym. I found a really great 4 DVD set with pilates and yoga video's in it. Each on is about an hour to which is really great because those are harder to find. There is a beginners and intermediate tape for both. The intermediate is actually quite challenging which is awesome.

I love to do Inhale on the Oxygen channel. Its on very early in the morning so I DVR it. That way I can watch it when I want and fast forward through the commercials. Steve Ross is a really cool teacher, and he makes it a lot of fun!

I am sort of new to yoga. Been going to a class at the local community center but it had a lot of older people in the class and I was looking for something that was a little more intense. I started with the total yoga earth (level 1) and now I am on the water (level 2) dvd. My goal is for Fire (level 3)in November. I love it because it includes sun salutations as well as standing and seated positions which I wasnt getting from my class. I highly recommend this series :)
