Great job cutting back on the mindless entertainment and way to go on your project, sounds like quite the undertaking. We did finish the week strong. Since the challenge we have definately cut back on our tv watching, spending much more time outside being active, walking, biking, playing on the playset etc. I'm proud of myself for doing the challenge.

haven't checked in, but we've definitely cut back on mindless entertainment - kids watch 30 m. video in evenings. we occasionally used to allow one in the afternoon on the w/e, but no more. none of us watch any "live" tv except DH might try to catch a ballgame once or twice a year - we don't have cable, so he's usually out of luck! i have cut down on checking e-mail, etc., and boy has it made a difference in my cookbook project! in a good way - i've actually sifted through most of my material, getting ready to spend time on computer now, actually writing it!

8/1 Day 4 no tv and no mindless electronic entertainment. We spent all morning outside on the playground, in the kiddie pool, walking, exploring. I think I wore him out....he took a 2 1/2 hour nap!

7/31 Day 3...the tv didn't go on...although I must admit we did do 30 minutes of curious george DVD...my son has a heavy learning day on Tuesdays with his development therapy group, so we did something light as a treat.

But we also spent plenty of time outside playing.

Welcome Lizabaker, I couldn't risk them deleting the thread...tee hee...just kidding spark!

7/30 - We lived tv and mindless entertainment free for the whole day...woo hoo...day 2 of the challenge.

We opted for coloring, blocks, cars and a 60 minute walk

I would love to do this one BUT - we really don't watch TV emoticon DD watches 1 30 minute show in the evening and that's it - She goes to Daycare/Swimming Camp 5 days from 7-5 reads 15 minutes(she only 7) and does 1 page of math and then it's outside for either 30 minutes of swimming, volley ball or riding bikes. After her shower in the evening at 7:30pm it's Hannah Montana and then another 15 minutes of reading and off to bed! This all started when they had the turn of the TV week during the last school year.

7/29 - I'm so proud of my family, the tv did not go on once today, the computers were used only for spark, email and playing my sons Signing/Speech learning DVD's. We went for an 18 mile bike ride, walked 1 mile my son in wagon and did 1 mile of short sprints on the lawn playing catch me if you can, played blocks, colored, read....it was actually easier than I thought it would be.

It wasn't my purpose to extol the virtues of PBS, but rather just point out that it's a free source of educational programming to those that may just want to trim the cord rather than severing it. With a digital antennae and no monthly fees you can keep enough TV with good quality picture and sound to occupy those times for sickness or need to provide a couple hours a week of 'rewards' to prevent withdrawal mutinies. Once the antennae is paid for, there are no more fees and it's more than adequate for a few hours a week of viewing time. I can be just as bored surfing one hundred and fifty channels of crap as I can twenty and the twenty are free. It's also more than adequate to get the local and national news for most of us, even if it's not a 24/7 extravaganza. Another thought is that a battery powered TV and your rooftop antennae may still be working when the cable or dish are gone in the event of emergencies and local power failures.

Thank you spark for the information....this was one of my daily emails, how appropriate!

Startling TV Facts

If you find it hard to escape the sights and sounds of the tube, or if watching your favorite show turns into more wasted hours than you planned, you're not alone. Americans watch TV for an average of 4 hours every day; even when we're not watching, the television is on- for almost 8 hours a day in the average home. Have you ever realized how much TV has become a part of our lives? Here are some more startling facts, from the non-profit organization, TV-Turnoff Network:

By age 65, the average American has seen 2 million TV commercials. Many of the commercials we see show appetizing foods-fast food, junk food, soda, alcohol, sugary cereals, and candy. Think "out of sight, out of mind."

The average American youth spends about 900 hours per year in school, and over 1,000 hours per year watching TV. While you can't place all the blame on TV, soaring rates of childhood obesity are a result of both poor nutrition and an inactive lifestyle. Limit the amount of time your kids (and yourself, leading by example) watch TV and encourage more physical activity like walking the dog, helping with yard work, playing sports, or other active hobbies.

Think it would impossible to turn off your TV for an entire week? Imagine how much more free time you would have if you didn't spend time watching TV! There are lots of fun (and healthy) things you could do with your newfound time. Here are some examples:
Start a vegetable garden or plant flowers
Take a class--drawing, woodworking, sewing--whatever interests you
Take a trip to the grocery store. Without the usual rush, take the time to compare labels, find new foods, and stock up on fresh fruits, veggies and healthy snacks.
Write a letter to someone you haven't seen in awhile
Spend more time with your pet! Go for a walk or play a game of Frisbee.
Prepare healthy bag lunches for the family.

Although there are some good programs on PBS, one of their sponsors is McDonalds......hmmmm....sounds like backdoor advertising to me? Besides what can Cailou or Dragon tales teach our children that we can't? When I mentioned educational material as an exception, it was more for children who are experiencing delays and it's part of their developmental/speech/advancement therapies/programs.

Anyhow, the purpose of the challenge is to cut out the tv/video games/etc for one week....join me if you like or not....the choice is yours. Wishing you all the best, Tracy

Regarding the educational programming, don't forget your local PBS channels. Most of us can get one or two of them for free. The new digital on air signals are great and free after you pay for the antennae.

The other alternative to cable internet is DSL which we are quite pleased with. We have Embarq's next to fastest connection for $25 monthly and it's not that much more money-wise than dial-up. Regarding speed, there's precious little difference unless you do lots of huge downloads... there cable is noticeably faster, but for Spark or just surfing, the DSL is lightning fast compared to dial-up and nearly as cheap. So.. digital antennae plus DSL equals fast internet and good quality TV picture with a limited number of channels (unless you're real close to a major market). Not cutting the cord, but trimming it back a bit. We pay over $90 a month for cable *without* internet. It's about to get the heave.

I'm in for the challenge. I've been considering turning the cable off too. The only reason I haven't yet, is because there are a lot of good educational programs out there. And I only allow my kids to watch certain channels when they watch tv. On the other hand. My kids spend about 80% of their time outside on their own free will. The other 20% is divided between playing indoors with their toys an tv. So I don't think the tv is a huge problem here at our place.

I am thinking that once school starts, I will document food and exercise in the morning for the previous day, since I track on paper as well. . . that will help with computer time here. . .

Oh well - I am anxious to see how this challenge goes for people!

Thanks for the congrats! I feel pretty good these days! I have been struggling a bit lately, but that's for another thread.

Unfortunately in my house, I cannot just block certain things or limit things. My husband is the major culprit. He loves to watch tv and play on the computer. He is not one to monitor the kids' tv and computer time very well and actually uses it as a tool to keep them occupied or out of his hair. I need to get rid of it all together so it will get the entire family up and about. I have high speed connection at work for spark. We don't need it for anything else. Frankly, between the work I do on the computer at work and spark people, I do not want any more computer time!

Wow! I would love to have a faster connection here at home just for spark people it is very time consuming for me to record food and fitness. . . dial up stinks.

Can you have the "budget" shows as well as the time with TV? just a thought. or block things? I can empathize. I have difficult time believing what my students watch and the "trash tv" that teens and young adults watch as well! we've come along way from silly sitcoms and such. . . .

I'm getting rid of my cable. Not only will it slow down our computer connection but it will eliminate all of those horrible cartoon channels that are on 24 hours a day. My kids are only given an allotted amount of tv time per day, but it's a struggle this summer to get them outside and they're ALWAYS asking to watch tv or play on the computer. Frankly, I could do without both of them. I have computer access at work if I need it (for sparkpeople!) and I don't need to watch tv. It's boring to just sit there mindlessly watching tv and it just makes me want to fall into my old habits of eating in front of it. I love this challenge!

Hooray for you! as a teacher I applaud the effort. One year I did a similiar tv challenge durring the spring for Earth day and suggested creative projects with recylced objects. Some families did really cool things - others were horrified!

I am going to try yours when school starts = advocating physical activity with the family participating.
great idea!

Here's a challenge for all you health conscience parents.....cut the cord!

Cut the cord to the tv, computer and any other electronic device you and your child sit mindlessly in front off day after day for one week. Obviously there will be exceptions, computer for school, work or to spark, learning DVD's/videos (example: my son has dvd's to teach sign language which we view and practice daily),.....I'm talking about the video games, the cartoons, the gaming web sites, the hand held games, the sitcoms, you get the idea......get outside, have family game time, go for a bike ride, take a walk, play tag....connect as a family.

Who will join me for one week free from the mindless electronic devices?

This challenge will start Sunday July 29th and end Saturday August 4th. Come here daily to post how you are doing.

We talk the talk, now let's walk the walk!
