My boyfriend and I went for a long walk in the mountain, it was pretty pleasant :) Then we had a bottle of kombucha and some energy ball made of millet and sunflower seeds. We bought an old box of 45's from the 80's to transfer them into digital to document, while cricticizing society (lol, and it was horrible, but quite fun!) Had a nice vegan supper, burito full of beans, sprouts and kale with balsamic vinegar. I'm heading in the kitchen to start a water kefir batch (tibicos on wikipedia, look it up!) That's about it. What about you?

Feeding home-made bread to the chickens emoticon They love it. I add some nutritional yeast and oat bran to the unbleached flour I can afford at the store. That, and rabbit feed cut with a bunch of scratch, and letting them out to eat in the yard most days, keeps me confident that I will have manure for the garden.

Getting outside instead of taking Vit D supplements. Granted, I don't bathe each day, especially during the cool weather, and this helps the sun do the Vit D job.

I have a 70-year-old neighbor who ordered a kit to turn a simple one-speed road bicycle into a gas-powered bicycle. It costs under $200 and just takes a few tools to do this. Several other elderly men around here use regular, geared bicycles to go about their weekly business.

I am saving some money each month to get a kit, too. I have a three gallon gas can that I can designate for the oil-gas mixture. Adding some Stabil gas treatment and part of a bottle of the stuff that gets water out of gas--we have had a lot of that going on around here this Summer--and I will have enough on-hand to go about 450 miles! I think I can add those things to gasoline that also has oil with it. Maybe I should just measure the oil into the gas tank each time I fill it?

The electric-bicycle kits are about double the price, and then I'd want a solar panel to charge it, and those are expensive. Seems like they could cost about 1/3 what they did 12 years ago, which was about a dollar per watt. Instead, they cost about triple!!!!!!! WHY?????????????? Aren't the solar, manufacturing plants paid for now?

This thread/topic is what pulled me into the team.

My husband and I have been carpooling since July 2002 when we met. We don't live in a town with public transportation so the weekends especially can get a little tricky, but we have done a great job being a one car family so far. That will end at the end of the summer when our daughter starts Kindergarten, but I figure the years we have had count toward something at least. :-)

Good for you JSPEED4. That's one of my main challenges.

Today I counted birds for conservation work and hoed some weeds in my flower garden, ate veggies from my veggie garden and set out some seeds to plant more veggies tomorrow.

I agree. Weather. Go figure.
Yesterday I got sunburned working outside. Today we have a foot of snow (and still falling)
Two days ago I admired a neighbor's fruit trees loaded with blossoms. Today that seems like probably a BAD thing.

We live on an island where a pack of coyotes run free. I am an animal rights activist, and I love hearing their yips and song. They travel around our island and they haven't been in our neck of the woods for a long time. They were hearer long before us, and I appreciate that.

Today, I am being crunchy by joining my CSA. At near 60, I realized that I need a different garden, and this year it's all about flowers. I will munch on my organic veggies sitting in a garden of color and beauty. My back will not allow constant tending (something I hope losing weight will help) and so I am concentrating on perennials.

I am reflecting on how there are all kinds of gardens. I am tilling soil for a new class I'll be teaching in the fall, and am searching for the right venue -- or bed -- to use. I will mulch it with my manure -- anything that is not joyous and supportive of the work. My plants will be my students, seedlings all, who will need the right mix of words, heart and spirit to grow strong and fruitful.

Yep, there are plenty of coyotes here. There are raccoons, too, and they do climb everything. With the dog and human smells and cars going by almost every hour, I leave the chickens out and they do OK during the day. The rooster keeps close tabs on his ladies and they have plenty of brush to use against flying predators. I still am concerned for their safety.

Without any fencing on the place yet, I almost didn't get the chickens. My neighbor picked them out for me, and was so hapy to share, that I went ahead, and for the past two seasons, it's been fine. I would not let them out of the coop for six weeks--afraid they would get eaten.

Today, I plan to burn brush in the garden area--not yet planted. I'll burn it in shallow ditches and then put the fire out with dirt, before it all burns up; this helps chase burrowing critters. It also is part of the perma-soil, or something like that, found in South America. It enriches the soil and helps form more good soil, according to some studies.

I'll bring in a bit of forest soil to sprinkle around the top, too, just in case too many good bacteria and such are killed by the heat. In a day or two, I'll get transplants and some flint corn in there. I'll watch to see if the char keeps the chickens out, or if I need to fence the area--something I do expect to do, with a temporary fence.

We travel a lot, so we had to add chickens and bunnies to our petsitters to-do list. Our chickens are only out and about when we're here. And they have a tractor to play in if we have to go to town for a short while.

Roaming dogs, hawks, owls, possums and raccoons all find chickens delectable and I'm not taking any chances with my flock. Their enclosure is completely predator-proof and I couldn't let them put themselves up because a coon would be happy to climb up to access any opening they had. So while we're gone they just have a commons area with the bunnies and a playpen. While we're here they have about 5 acres they patrol.

Today I'm composting, moving sod to the trench dug for our solar line, and picking home-grown lettuces, onions and kale.

Coyotes, foxes, feral cats, hawks, skunks, raccoons...so many things find chickens a taste treat! And they don't attack just at night. The fox that grabbed Biddy last year came about 8:00 in the morning. I've even seen them trotting down our suburban sidewalk later in the day. The predators are my biggest fear. As long as they're in their Eglu run, I feel like they're pretty safe, but out in the yard we are taking our chances.

Good luck on the plums and apricots! Sometimes it's nice to go for a ride through the countryside to see what kinds of fruit trees are still surviving after old homesteads have been abandoned. To me, that says that these are hardy plants, suitable for that environment.

Coyotes. There is another concern. My dogs are in constant negotiation with the coyotes over which pack (ours/theirs) owns this place. I am sure they would make free with the chickens.
Maybe I am just making excuses for being chickenless......

Those plum trees should be a pretty good deal.

We got a bag of tiny apricots at the local farm market last fall. Since they were grown locally I thought they might have a chance of survival on our place. I saved the pits. I kept them in the refrigerator over winter. Quite a few sprouted. I tried planting some out doors in fall (as I read online) but that apparently didn't work. I now have 10 of the most viable looking ones planted in pots indoors.
I am hoping. emoticon

Chickens can take care of themselves as long as they have access to their coop at night so that coyotes and such cannot access it. I tie my waterers up to the fence siding so they can't be knocked over. I can leave them, with a bunch of food, for a couple of days--never tried three, and in hot weather they drink 4-6 x the water.

Since older chickens can climb or fly and younger ones can go through the fencing, it seems that some sort of entrance can be devised to help them survive without daily attention. I've been thining about it for this place.

Crunchy Today: I am transplanting a plum tree that a neighbor is donating to me. He has a bunch of starts from his original tree and needs to get rid of them.

EDIT Some spelling and: It is amazing how prolific nature is, when she is not crowded.

About those chickens...I've got a grown daughter who lives right across the street, so when we go out of town I pay her to come over and take care of the animals. Once, when she was going on vacation the same time we were, I paid the neighbor to watch things. One of the parrots bit him, though, so I guess I'm out of luck if this happens again!

Good plans on the bicycle and the cat JSpeed.

I feel like I am the only one that does not have chickens.
This is a new peer pressure for me. This inadequacy never came up with my old circle of acquaintances.
We have room for chickens. My reluctance is due to fear we won't be able to take off for long weekends or just up and leave the place on a moments notice if we have small critters.
How do you all handle that?

Today we are off to pick up another load of sheep/goat manure.

I let out my chickens. I hope they can keep the grasshoppers down--I might get some Red Star chickens next month to add to the astrolourps, or whatever they are called.

I'm sanding down the inside of my bicycle rim on the rusty spots, painting them with a rust preventer, and considering that green gell for the tubes to see if I can keep the tires up.

I am wearing a dress I bought at a garage sell, cooked up a pot of beans and millet with carrots and parsley, feeding my cat less so she gets the mice out of the shed, and looking for a spot to put in another sugar maple tree.

Now life has leveled off a little, I am now going back to walking everywhere round town rather than driving.

Sat with a friend on the front veranda of my old house (he is living in it now, thankfully, and loves it just as I did)yesterday, eating the last of the cherry tomatoes he had just picked from the garden in his old place, and drinking fresh lemonade made from his lemons. Nothing like being in the sun enjoying something grown with love and care instead of artificial everything.

This afternoon I went out in the garden and crunched on some asparagus. No energy used to heat up the oven, just me and the asparagus. Of course, I didn't share any but it was crunchy and delightful. I also harvested a big wad of cilantro and added it to some beans, tomatoes, garlic, cumin and oats for some yummy bean burgers with minimal processing. I did use the oven for those. Numnums.

Its a splendiferous compost day!
Today my husband and I went and loaded up a pickup load of well aged goat and sheep manure brought it home and spread it on the garden.
A neighbor was just giving the stuff away! Can you believe it?!?
Besides the garden benefits we got a nice workout shoveling the stuff from the pens into the wheelbarrow and lifting the barrow into the truck.
She says we can come back and do it again whenever we want. What a nice lady.

Thanks for the encouraging words though.

Since last fall when we got our wood stove I have been using it for cooking. Since it is just sitting there heating anyway it seemed only practical to use the hot top for something. I have experimented with all kinds of things to see how they can be prepared on the wood stove. It seems to be most useful for things like oatmeal, beans, rice and steaming vegetables.
This is really more out of cheapness (due to the price of propane) than crunchiness.
Sometimes impure motives can lead to right action....

Went up the chain of command at the El Tropicano Riverwalk Hotel to advocate for better care for their birds. I hope, hope, hope they will do what was promised!

Good for you! Bottled water is one of my pet peeves, drives me nuts.

And speaking of driving, today I drove nowhere, hiked in the cold at home rather than going to the gym (crowded in the afternoon). Yea!

Declined the bottled water offered to me after my massage. Our tap water is just fine.

Yesterday I spread more bunny/chicken poopy dirt in my garden. I may do more of that today if I can get my shoulder to agree to it!

We're experiencing an arctic blast right now, so I made cornbread with seeds for the outside critters and spread plain seeds on the sidewalk.

I hate winter. It breaks my heart to see how the animals suffer with the cold and lack of water.

We just took a huge load of plastics, paper, cardboard, clear glass, and metal cans to the recycle depot yesterday too. It feels so good to clear it all out again!

I admit that I want to recycle everything too. I won't put it in the bin if it's not acceptable but for example, it hurt to toss a dark glass flax oil bottle in the trash yesterday. Our area only takes clear glass for recycling. I posted on our city's social side of our Freecycle forum to see if anyone knew a way I could recycle colored glass, but no luck.

Sometimes I have to do the opposite--my DH wants to recycle EVERY plastic item. I do too, but I know it can't be done. But we did take a truckload of recyclables today, including (acceptable) plastic, cardboard, paper, glass and metal.

Today's crunchiness is just me dragging things out of the trash can to put into the recycle bin. My DH, who really is a wonderful man, takes a long time to get used to changes in what is acceptable to recycle.
Today, that means gable topped milk containers.

I'm making granola tonight and planning this summer's garden. I'm trying to be more reasonable than usual, but it's hard when there's 7 inches of snow on the ground (though I do love it!) and the catalog shows glorious photos of rainbow chard, tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, sweet potatoes . . . well, you get the picture. My eyes are bigger than my garden energy levels!

emoticon Gathered up all the little bits of grains I had in the cupboard, cooked them all up together, and I'm feeding them to all the critters. I tasted it, too, and I think with some cut up fruit it might make a great lunch for me!

Good for you! Monsanto is probably Public Enemy number 1.

I'm joining Seed Savers Exchange this week and I'm trying not to buy ANY seeds that aren't heirloom (especially not any controlled by Monsanto and similar industrial giants).

I'm recycling a cracked egg. I think the chickens are getting careless but someone may have poked a hole in an egg. So it goes to a cat or a chicken! For crunchy New Year's Eve festivities I'm recycling some of the Christmas snacks I froze and hope they'll all be eaten at the partay. Happy New Year!

They'll eat most anything! Especially eggs, the little carnivores. I gave them some leftover pasta today and most of them loved it. I'm noticing more and more who prefers what, and they have their faves just like we do!

I had no idea they'd eat shrimp shells!

Bella's molting, so I cooked up birdy bread with extra egg for her. Also, I put the heater in the Eglu again to help keep her warm.

My chickens are easily pleased too! I sent DH up there with leftover bread cubes (bunnies got some too) and shrimp shells and they were thrilled. Especially on a snowy windy day.

DH and I got videos for the children in our family--videos about wild animals and conservation and such. I hope the kids will learn a lot and become good green citizens.

Bella T. Chicken is molting, so I wanted to give her a little extra protein. I poured the whey off the yogurt over the girls' layer crumbles and they thought it was a big treat!
