Thanx Annie, I wownder if that's something that the OFB thinks about when buying their food. I could go on but a great reason to grow your own food (when possible) wiwth trusted seeds.

Hospitals are terrific for traumatic care; for acute care. They do a really, really good job in saving lives when it’s a sudden bleeding emergency. But in terms of chronic care, they’re terrible; (that is) in terms of the illnesses that most people have, endure, that cost the most money, that last the longest and ultimately die from. -Dr. Andrew Saul

I just received this email from Mike Jezewski, our volunteer coordinator from Saturday:

Dear SparkPortland Volunteer Team,

Thank you for participating in the volunteer event at Oregon Food Bank on Saturday February 4th. Together with other community members, your team worked hard to re-pack over 12,000 pounds of rice! That is a lot of food! Many small tasks came together to achieve this. Our thanks go to the bag labelers, box makers, un-loaders, scoopers, baggers, twist tiers, loaders and pallet movers. In a single visit, the entire group packed enough food to provide over 9,700 meals for people in need. Every member of your team can be proud of their individual contribution.

In Oregon and Clark County Washington, an estimated 260,000 people eat from an emergency food box in an average month. Your volunteer service helps our many neighbors who aren't sure where their next meal will come from.

What a wonderful group! We really appreciate your hard work, and look forward to seeing you soon.

Mike Jezewski
Volunteer Coordinator

Yeah, with over 13,000 members on this team you would think we could rouse up a few interested people. Where IS everybody?? Even a couple a dozen sparkers would be nice.

Anybody live east of 205? Near (or not too far from) Springwater Trail?

I was very happy to do it!

Now let's see if we can branch out and have different/new experiences.

Maybe we can work in a soup kitchen, or help out with meals on wheels. I know, it seems I'm fixated on food-related activities, and I suppose in a way I am. So many people have food issues and these things are positive experiences with food rather than a negative ones.

Or, we are heading into warmer weather! I'd love help organizing a group walk in various neighborhoods and areas on Portland. We're so big and spread out it makes sense to try and hit all the different areas so everyone has a chance to participate.

Just some of things rattling around in my brain.

I just appreciate all of you participating, because it simply wouldn't happen without YOU!

Hey everyone!

I'm happy to report that we had a GREAT time at the Oregon Food Bank today. We (as part of a large group of volunteers) bagged up over 12,000 pounds of rice!

You read that right.. 12,000! That's HUGE. It was a fantastic opportunity to meet more Sparkers face to face and spend time together and get to know one another beyond the words on the screen.

I've posted a blog about our venture and added a group photo to our Team Stream. Take a look!

PDXScarlett, it looks like they do have weekend afternoon shifts, so I'll be sure to add one into our rotation.

Sylvia, I wasn't a cheerleader, but I did try out to be our school mascot emoticon didn't make it. Hasn't stopped me though! Ha!
Good for you and walking the mall. Every little bit helps.

Courtney, glad to have you join in with us! I'm so excited to be able to meet so many 'new to me' Sparkers!

I will absolutely see what we can do about arranging a group walk. We're all so spread out in Portland, we may do a round-robin sort of effort and try doing walks in different neighborhoods in hopes of making it easy for different people to make different events. Or something like that.....

Yep, I can see the enthusiasim for a long walk/run! Wish I could... I've been walking around Mall 205 as many days a week as I can. I have Fibromyalgia and walk with a cane for balance, and sometimes for pain, but want to get that exercise in or things will get worse.

A social outing would be great, or a stroll, lol. A chance to compare notes, get to know each other, and maybe spread the Spark. The Red Hat ladies do it; why can't we? They are very recognizeable in their red hats and purple outfits...course Spark t-shirts would work for us...

Hey, anyone want to be a cheerleader?! Those were the days for some of us....

Right now weekends are best for me but the later the better. We are swing shifters so we get to bed pretty late. I love the idea of social events in the group and it doesn't always have to be OFB. I like the idea of a 5k walk too.

I'm interested in getting together for a 5K walk; somewhere on the east side is best for me since I live clear out near Sandy. My body, from the ankles up is raring to go on a run or 10K walk but it's my toes that keep me from doing it. i don't know why God gave me such funky feet!! I've spent so much money on shoes, doctors, inserts, etc and nothing works. My toes just can't handle the pressure for long distances. It's a real bummer. I was getting ready to climb Mt. Hood when I finally realized that this toe problem wasn't going away.
emoticon
But a 5K I think I could do--I'd sure like to give it a try.

PDXScarlet, I'm hoping to schedule a shift for our team at least once a month at OFB. If we can alternate between week-day evenings and weekend mornings, I'm hoping to offer more options for folks to join in. Week-day evening shifts from from 6:00 to 8:30. Would something like that work better for you?

Sylvia, I'm all about dragging as many of you along with me as I can LOL I mean.. encouraging people to participate emoticon I'm keeping my eyes and ears open as well for any walking teams in the area. I know of plenty of running groups, but haven't had as much luck finding walking groups.. YET!

I'm just tickled that we have people interested in getting out and meeting team mates, so thank YOU all!

I'm still in; hope we get enough people. If not we'll just try again later. Personally, I've really got a case of the winter blahs and the accompanying Nothing-really-matters-I-don't-want-to-do-
anything syndrome. So doing this kind of volunteer work is great mental, physical and spiritual medicine!! --a good slap in the self-centered face!

Oh, and I'll see if we can't plan another weekday shift as well. I know it's hard for some folks to make the event due to just getting off work, the distance, etc. so if we can mix things up, that will allow for more choices to participate.

I will invite some of my young (teens) friends and grandchildren. Kids are all so darn busy these days that I can't guarantee that they can do this but I will try. Hubby is usually tied up on Saturdays so I don't know if he will be able to make it.
Is this the same location where we were before?

Also, you'd mentioned including some of your friends. If you'd like to bring them along as well, that would be great!

I do want to be a bit more organized this time and have our folks meet at the center at 5:45 -at least- so we have a chance to meet each other, do introductions and some bonding!

Hey gang! We have another opportunity to volunteer at the Oregon Food Bank on February 4, from 9 am to 11 am. That's a Saturday. We'll be working at the Volunteer Action Center in Northeast Portland.

This is tentative right now. We need at least 5 team members committed before I can let them know we want the slot. I requested a Saturday time slot in hopes that a weekend shift would be a bit easier for people to participate in. There is an age limit of 6 years old.

Please let me know if you'd be interested in this great opportunity to meet other SparkPortland team mates and help those in need.
