I just received this email from OFB:

Dear Candace,

Thank you for organizing, and participating in, the Spark Portland group volunteer event at Oregon Food Bank on Wednesday. Together with other community members, your team worked hard to pack 22,654 lbs of Pears! Many small tasks came together to achieve this. Our thanks go to the baggers, weighers, twist tiers, runners, pallet movers, and clean-up crew. In a single visit, the entire group packed enough food to provide an average of 17,426 meals for people in need. Every member of your team can be proud of their individual contribution; they each packed 290 meals!

In Oregon and Clark County Washington, an estimated 260,000 people eat from an emergency food box in an average month. Your volunteer service helps our many neighbors who aren’t sure where their next meal will come from.

What a wonderful group! We hope you had fun and that you got a sense of the direct impact your service has on our community. We also hope the tour was a good chance for new volunteers to learn more about how Oregon Food Bank operates and other ways to help us fight hunger. We look forward to seeing you back here soon!

Thanks again,
Lindsay

PS: This video was produced recently - I think it does a great job explaining why the need is so great, and why volunteers like your group are so vital.

Well then, thank you Song-of-Deborah. You were sorely missed.

Hospitals are terrific for traumatic care; for acute care. They do a really, really good job in saving lives when it’s a sudden bleeding emergency. But in terms of chronic care, they’re terrible; (that is) in terms of the illnesses that most people have, endure, that cost the most money, that last the longest and ultimately die from. -Dr. Andrew Saul

Wonderful pictures!

The thanks go to Song-of-Deborah, as she made the suggestion. I just got lucky running interference.. I mean, logistics in getting us a date.

I'll be sure to identify future opportunities and see what we can do to mix up the days/times.

Thank you Candy for making this happen. My dh said he had a great time and would do it again. We are seriously thinking of getting some friends involved.

Aniduckthistle, thanks for sharing your photos on the Team Stream! They're wonderful!

Yes, NWCountrydancer's blog has some great shots as well!

Aniduckthistle and her DH, NWCountrydancer, Lindam.1, and my DH (Harliguy) and I spent the evening at the OFB bagging approx. 22,600 lbs of pears! I believe the volunteer organizer said there 60 signed up on the rosters for the night. We met a few people from a Meet Up group called Anyone Can Join.

It was amazing to see all the people gathered around large bins of perfectly good pears that had been 'rejected' and donated by Harry and David, the gourmet gift business. Some people bagged up 5 lbs of pears, some people picked up those bags and 'ran' them to the collection bins, some people ran hand trucks to move filled bins out into the warehouse. Everyone was busy, and the whole thing seemed to have a sense of joy attached to it. I compared it to watching a swarm of locusts descending on the bins and making short work of them all.

I'm certainly interested and willing to organize another volunteering opportunity for our team at the OFB in the near future. They offer evening shifts Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, along with Saturday morning and afternoon.

I understand weekday evenings are hard for many of us, although the same can be said for weekends as well. Perhaps we can alternate weekday shifts with weekend shifts, allowing everyone who wants to participate the opportunity to do so.

All in all, I think it was a fabulous experience, and can't wait to go back. If you'd like to volunteer, please don't feel you must wait for a team event to do so. They NEED volunteers all the time. For more information.....
www.oregonfoodbank.org/

My gratitude to Aniduckthistle, NWCountrydancer, and Lindam.1 for coming out.

Ah Bethany, so sorry to hear you and your husband aren't feeling well. I'll agree though - the flu is much better than pneumonia!
Rest well and recover soon. We'll organize other events, and keep you in mind when we do.

For the rest of the gang - looking forward to seeing everyone tonight!

Hi everyone. My husband and I will not be able to go tonight. :( Both of us have come down with some sort of flu bug. I guess it's better than last year when hubby got pneumonia on Christmas Eve. I hope you have a big turn out tonight!

We can pick up someone also. We are coming in from clear out in the Sandy/Boring area so any stop in the SE or NE areas will be fine for us. Yes, traffic will be slow so we all need to start early. Let me know if you need a ride. We can fit 2 easily and even 3 could possibly squeeze in the back seat.

I am willing to carpool. I am coming from Hubbard and will probably be going up I5 as 205 north in the evening is usually at a standstill. Let me know and I can pick up people along the way. I can fit 3 extra people in my car. (4 to make it cozy!)

Received an email over the weekend that I thought I'd share...

Hello!

Thank you so much for signing up to come out and join a volunteer shift at Oregon Food Bank. We truly appreciate your gift of time over the Holiday Season. We couldn't do what we do without your support.

Growing levels of poverty and long-term unemployment forced more people to seek emergency food this past year, and for the first time, the Oregon Food Bank Network distributed more than 1 million emergency food boxes.

***
emoticon
Food Bank resources are being stretched to meet this increased demand, and so we are asking our volunteers to help us even further by bringing in cans of food to upcoming volunteer shifts. If every volunteer over the next month brought two cans of food with them, it would potentially allow OFB to distributean additional 15,000 lbs. of highly nutritious food out to families in need.
emoticon
***

You can also help the cause by organizing a food drive in your community or at your workplace. You can find additional information about our most wanted foods here, but generally, we always need more: peanut butter, chili, tuna, cooking oil, canned soups and vegetables, macaroni and cheese, and fruit juice.
www.oregonfoodbank.org/Organize-a-Food-Dri
ve/Most-Wanted-Foods?c=129687831556388

We understand that times are tough and that you might not be able to spare any food or funds right now, but if you are able to it will go a long way towards making sure that we can meet the increasing need in our community.

Hello Candace,

Thank you so much for choosing to volunteer with the Oregon Food Bank. We couldn’t do the work that we do without the help of volunteers!

We have scheduled your group to come to the Volunteer Action Center. Here, volunteers repackage and sort bulk non-perishable food items, fresh produce, frozen foods or other projects.

You are scheduled to bring 5+ volunteers on Wednesday, December 28th from 6 to 8:30pm.

We ask that you, as the group contact, ensure that these guidelines are followed. Please make sure that all volunteers have this information in advance.

There's more information in the email. If you'll be joining us in this effort, please send me a SparkMail, containing

My hubby just told me that he wants to do this.
How many do we have on board now?

Hospitals are terrific for traumatic care; for acute care. They do a really, really good job in saving lives when it’s a sudden bleeding emergency. But in terms of chronic care, they’re terrible; (that is) in terms of the illnesses that most people have, endure, that cost the most money, that last the longest and ultimately die from. -Dr. Andrew Saul

I'm in for either Wednesday or Thursday!

As I told Candy, the company I work for does a huge food and fund drive for The Oregon Food Bank every year, but I would love to do more for this wonderful organization.

I've submitted our application to volunteer to the OFB website. As soon as I hear something, I'll pass along the information. I picked the three available dates/times, in chronological order, as our three choices.

Again, we can ABSOLUTELY do other/more get-together type things if folks are interested. we're not limited to only one event. Keep the ideas coming!

The Wednesday/Thursday slots work best for me in order to leave time to prepare for New Year's Eve party. Though if Friday works better for other folks I'll just work around that if I have to. I'm easy.

Great idea on sending out the email - I'll get one out this afternoon.

Like you, I have at least my DH willing to join in with the effort. For my part, however, I'm only available during the afternoon/evening hours on the 28th and 29th. With that in mind, purely for selfish reasons (!!) I'm going to narrow our available shifts down to...

Wednesday, Dec 28, 2011:
6:00 p to 8:30 p Volunteer Action Center (age: 6+) (Portland)

Thursday, Dec 29, 2011:
6:00 p to 8:30 p Food Recovery Center (age: 16+) (Portland)
6:00 p to 8:30 p Volunteer Action Center (age: 6+) (Portland)

Friday, Dec 30, 2011:
1:30 p to 4:30 p Volunteer Action Center (age: 6+) (Portland)

Watch for that email, and keep spreading the word.

Thanks for the info and the link.
All three of those days are still open for me.
Maybe a special message can be sent out to all team members to see if we can get the 5 or more people needed to make a "group".
Maybe I could find a friend or relative to join me in this--I'll ask around and let you know.
It would be fun to meet other sparkers in person and do a valuable service at the same time.

I checked out information pertaining to the Portland location, as that seems to be the central location. If someone is more familiar with another location, please let us know. I've not organized something like this before, so I'm open to all help and suggestions!

I think volunteering at the Food Bank is a great idea.

I did a quick check of the site, and we need a group of 5 or more to qualify as group volunteers. It looks like there are group volunteer opportunities from Dec. 27th on.

If you really want to do this, and do it in the month of December, please let me know you are committed and I'll submit an application once we have enough people.

Please keep in mind if the dates to do this with the SparkPortland team don't work out, you can absolutely volunteer your time and efforts individually. Don't let not having a group stop you.

***edited to add***
And if you can't or aren't interested in volunteering at the Food Bank, that's fine as well! I'm happy to see folks interested in getting together to Do Something - now we just need to figure out what! We can have multiple events this month, or none at all. I know how nutty holiday schedules can be.

I like the idea of volunteering at the Oregon Food Bank as a group? Maybe we could do some volunteering work and then go for a walk/run. My calendar is filling up so I need some dates from others for when they are free. We can work this out so most of us can participate.

That sounds like fun. I would love to do a get-together however it depends on when it is as I am travelling for the holiday.

Hey everyone emoticon

Would anyone be interested in trying a pre-Holiday active Spark get-together? We could meet somewhere and go for a walk, run, walk/run, jog…. or maybe have smaller, neighborhood-centric active get-togethers. Something for NE, SW, NW, SE, and outlying areas?

Please let us know what you think and if you’d like to participate or help organize.
