I saw the haunted carts too, and wondered the same thing. Spooky. Great recap, and I truly did have a great time. Thanks everyone for keeping me company. The events can be a bit boring by yourself. Tata taters.
October 9, 2011 - Downtown Portland. 21,000 runners and walkers amassed in downtown Portland to participate in the 40th annual Portland Marathon, Half Marathon, Nordic Walk, 10K Downhill Dash, and 10K Family Fun Walk.

SparkPortland was represented by four Sparkers - Chazeray, GayeMC, Harliguy, and CBaileyC (that's me!) We all met at the Heathman hotel, and waited for a bit in case we had other Sparkers joining in on the fun. Once we boarded the very nice, very plush and stylish buses, we were whisked away to Willamette Blvd to start our journey to the finish line.
Of course, while we were making our way to the start for the walk, it started raining. Well, it wasn't really rain. I heard one announcer explain it to the out-of-towners that it wasn't rain, or even drizzle - it was heavy humidity! LOL
We were let off the bus and after having a friendly volunteer snap a quick pick of our group, we set off! We traded leading the pack between all of us, with Chazeray and Harliguy taking off at a quick step for a while, reeling in the walkers in front of them and picking them off one by one. GayeMC and CBaileyC witnessed an apparent haunted set of railway cars that were chugging along at a pretty good clip, all by themselves! Oooooo just right for this spooky Halloween month LOL
All in all, Gaye and Chas finished a good bit ahead of Bill and myself, but I think we all had a great time. It was fun once we came off the Broadway bridge and merged in with the Half/Marathon runners and walkers. Once we were done, we snagged up some goodies (fruit and juice and water and carbs galore!) then found another lovely volunteer to take one more picture of us before we split up.
After we parted ways, I headed to my office on the waterfront to change into dry clothes, then back to Tom McCall park to see if we'd have anyone show up for the meet-up at 12 noon. Unfortunately, I got antsy by 12:20 and went back to the Marathon. If you showed up but didn't find anyone, I apologize. I'm hoping to better organize another meet-up next week, so bear with me as I get these things figured out.
I was lucky enough to wander down to the Firestation on Naito and hear a really good band playing! As it happens, it's TheCoolestSarah's band! Yay! I didn't want to intrude on her gig, so waited until they were done to message her, and we got to meet face to face behind the firestation. What a super awesome chick! It was great fun to meet her, and I'm looking forward to including her in our future adventures.
My thanks go Chas, Gaye, Sarah, and my hubby Bill for joining in on this fun crazy adventure of a day.
So did any of this sound like fun to you? Great! Let me know what you'd like to do, or if you'd like to help host a Spark meet-up in your neighborhood or part of town. You don't/won't have to organize the whole thing, or have a buncha strangers come tromping into your house. Just scout out a park, golf course, several blocks, school track - anything that would serve as a place to get together and gab and walk for some active fun times.
Send me a message, get involved - how much fun can YOU have with your Spark?
