Now that the sun is out again (for now...) I'm going to start hiking around Rocky Butte and Joseph Wood Hill park in Northeast, around 92nd and Fremont. Great view of the city from the top!

Sellwood Springwater Corridor entrance before Oaks Park! You can park and head north to OMSI, and they are paving the path south to connect and head east towards Johnson Creek. It is so beautiful along the water. I just joined Portland Fit and plan to be on the corridor a few times per week. I also love going to Westmoreland Park. Again, a parking lot if you live a ways away and there are trees, ducks, and the main path for running or walking.

Doing just a little bit during the time we have available
puts you that much further ahead than if you took no action at all.

Just another vote for Powell Butte! It's reasonably close to me, so I try to hit it often! Usually take my camera with me too! :)

Right now, my fiance and I have been exploring Forest Park (our last visit we walked from Lower McLeay to the Audobon Society...quite the hike, but so pretty. We did get to see the stone house which is really neat!). I love this thread, all these great places/suggestions I definitely need to try out with my guy ;)

I like schools. You can't go until 6pm or so, unless it's a non-school day, but I like walking on the track, playing basketball (most schools even have a covered area if it's rainy), and you can always swing if you need to take a breather. It honestly is fun, and it feels like recess, not "exercise".

This thread is a bit old so I figured it was time to breathe some life into it.

Powell Butte. I love it and I'm so sad that I found it right before it started getting cold.

Mt. Tabor is nice but I'm kind of tired of it.

I've only been to Multnomah Falls once and it was the day after a pretty heavy drinking session combine that with a pair of Birkenstock's and now Multnomah Falls will be forever dubbed "Death Falls" but we made it to the top! I think I'm going to go there again this spring now that I know what to expect.

There are some other places just East of the city that I want to check out but haven't made the time for it.

This spring that will change...

Its not outdoorsy, but its fun... Safari Sams in Sherwood. Its a giant indoor jungle gym for adults too, with put put golf, arcade, basketball court and blowup toys like JJ jump. ITs cheap and awesome!

Im up at Mt Tabor 3-4x a week. Also, I work downtown, so I walk around the waterfront (3 miles) 1-3X a week.

Also, Ive taken to walking 10Ks most weekends. Self-paced, mapped walks (FREE) are available through the Volkssport Walking Association. They are all over the United States and internationally. To learn more, visit www.ava.org

This Saturday, I plan to walk over in Sellwood on a walk sponsored by the Columbia River Volkssport Club www.walkingforfun.org/year_ro
und_walks
/sellwood.htm
There are three walks to choose from and they all start at the Columbia Outlet, and you can start as early as 9 AM. You dont have to be a member to walk on these walks, but you do have to sign in. They are a great way to see different areas you wouldnt otherwise see!

I love walking down by the Willamette on either side and crossing over the Hawthorne Bridge. Walking at Oaks Park and along the Springwater Corridor is great for a bike ride. I also like going into Ladd's Addition and stopping for an iced cream soda on SE 12th, what is that coffee shop called?

Mt.Tabor I do almost weekly. Also the Burnt Bridge Creek Corridor in Vancouver, WA is a great walking/biking trail. Most obviously is the gorge! I am going to try to make a goal of hiking at least once a week this summer. Also I do love the witches castle ;0)

The Tualatin Valley Wildlife Refuge opened last year. They advertise about 3 miles of trails. However, it's ez to change up your route to increase the mileage; e.g., 4 times up/down the hill to the Ridgetop Observatory is over 1 mile.

Here's TVWR's web site: www.fws.gov/tualatinriver/

Here's the pdf map:
www.fws.gov/tualatinriver/recreation
/d
ocuments/TrailMap.pdf

There are usually brochures located at the entrance to the trails, on the parking lot side.

TVWR is on the north side of 99W on the curve in the highway just b4 you get to Sherwood. Yes, the entrance is just past the auto junkyard!

Unless I just stay on the road, I count my time as Hiking-Cross Country instead of counting mileage.

haha, we call it the stone house, it gives me the creeps! I really love taking the max, getting off at the tunnel stop, at the zoo, and then hiking up to pittock mansion, past the audabon, past the stone house, to lower Mcleay, then catching the bus. It's a really fun hike and you don't have to drive!

Anyone been up to the "witches castle"? You start at Macleay park and work your way up. The trail continues beyond and up once you reach the building but I usually start playing around and taking pictures so I have not yet ventured past the castle. This summer though, I'm determined to explore more! And my little dog too!

Forest Park is one of the best places that I have found within the Portland city limits to run, bike, or hike. There are trails that make it easy to run (or hike)any distance that you are looking for. What's more, Leif Erickson allows you access to a number of trails within Forest Park AND you can ride your bike on Leif Erickson itself.

You can access Forest Park from NW 29th and Upshur, and the Leif Erickson Trailhead is located on NW Thurman, basically if you drive up Thurman into the West Hills you can't help but run into it.

nice topic ! hmm, Gorge, Hoyt Arboretum, Mt Tabor . .. the list goes on.

For warmup hikes in the spring: Gorge, starting with relatively easy Multnomah Falls
For walking training: Barbur Blvd, among the trees, with limited crosswalks

But what I really love to do is go cross-country skiing, typically on Mt Hood. My favorite places is Snow Bunny, a loop from the snopark up the road to the cross-tie road, then west toward Hwy 26 for a bit, back country run Yellow Jacket trail, then loop the road to Snow Bunny tube runs. About 3.5 miles total mostly on roads makes it easy for me to do at almost any weight and fitness level, with 3/4 mi on Yellow Jacket trail to add a few thrills and spills to the run.

Praying for more snow on a sunny day after Groundhog's Day !

Walk lightly on the planet . . . with confidence and joy

The Zoo! We have a family membership there so I take my 2 year old during the week a lot. I can walk around there for 2 hours and totally have fun. Sure beats a treadmill!

Also think it's fun to just walk around various neighborhoods in Portland and discover new shops, restaurants, coffee, etc..

Any place along the Gorge for me. My favorite waterfall is Wahkeena - and we like the hike (although it is STRENUOUS!) from there up to the springs at the top then over to Multnomah Falls and down to the Old Highway.

In the summer we like to kayak along the Columbia River. (I pretend I am with Lewis and Clark unless it's windy and there are waves, then I sing the theme song from Hawaii 5-0!)

The Hoyt Arboretum on the west side of Portland is my favorite place to go that is near the city. It is close to my house, so it is easy to get there, and my dog absolutely loves it as well. It is nice and hilly, so you get an extra workout there. There are many different trails and some great views and shady tree areas, so it is great at any time of year and for any level.

I have always liked Mt. Tabor, and the Airport Bikeway (along the river). Other than that, unless we are really going out, I just like to walk around the city. My new goal is to walk my buddy (Baxter, my dog) through all the small sections of town. I think it will do me some good to see what changes have actually occurred in the last 20 years without me paying any attention. My sister in Florida told me yesterday about a pedestrian bridge over the Willamette. I don't think I even have a clue as to where to begin looking.

Hope you all are having a wonderful fall.

I'm on the Springwater Trail at least 3 times a week. I also really like the Latourell Falls hike in the gorge. It takes about an hour-ish. I've also done the hike to the very top of Multnomah Falls a few times. I would like to get my fitness level to the point where i can keep up with my 19-year-old son. It is a very challenging hike for me. (But I can bike longer than he can, at least.)

Tualatin Hills Nature Park, near 170th in Beaverton. I work nearby, so (when I feel motivated!) I walk there during lunch. It's cool and shady in the summer, and peaceful in the winter.

Last winter it was neat to see the ice in the creeks. There are a couple of creeks, a pond with water lilies, lots of different kinds of plants (including remnants of an old apple orchard).

I've seen a barred owl, a couple of deer, rabbits, snakes, and a heron. And of course, banana slugs, and robins -- all sorts of critters.

I agree with pgooding08 MT Tabor park is beautiful and you can walk around the reservoir until midnight. The lower reservoir is .56 miles once around and stays lit all night. Great place to go if you want to track how far you walk (or run). And be close to nature.

I like to go walking at Orchards Park. I can typically do two laps in 30 minutes.

My favorite parks to walk, jog and enjoy nature are Rood Bridge Park (near Hillsboro High School) and Noble Woods Park (off baseline).

Oooh! Just about anywhere in the gorge for hiking. Some faves are Angel's Rest, Eagle Creek, and Dog Mountain. I'm an ambitious hiker and I'd like to do Mt Defiance by next summer.

I like to bike on the Springwater Trail, and up the Columbia River Gorge Scenic Highway from Troutdale.

I walk 4 miles at least 5 days a week near my house in Happy Valley. There are some killer hills around here.

Powell Butte is nice hike up the hill to the top and great view up top... Waterfront park just walking a long the water is always nice... And also outside of Portland is Timothy Lake is about 12 miles around the entire lake we use to camp up there and it would take half the day to hike around but it was nice...

I loved hiking up Multnomah Falls just a couple of weeks ago. It was pretty crowded because it was the 4th of July, but it was amazingly awesome.

Was just a bit sore for a few days after! lol

Where do you like to go to walk, hike, commune with nature???

Tell us about the interesting areas, places, lakes, mountains, hills, parks....you get the idea!

So who should I be talking to that you know who needs my skills?
