Sounds like a great walk. If I weren't doing the Hippy Chick quarter on Sunday I might have joined you. I hope the weather stayes dry for both of us but it's not looking promising. Have a great time!

In case you are at loose ends tomorrow, you are welcome to join me on the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. This is not a race, and there is no cost to join. However, they do encourage donations. You can join my team: Dancing the Cancer Away! If you have not signed up already to be on our team you can sign up there. The walk is 5 miles, but if you can't make it that far they have a turn-around point.

Here is my team page: http://main.acsevents.org/goto/Dancing

Can't walk? You can still help by donating!

I will meet people there in the Rose Quarter Commons I hope to be there by 8-8:15a. It might rain - so you might want to bring rain gear. This happens rain or shine. I will have a sign for our team: Dancing the Cancer Away!!

Date: Saturday, May 7, 2011
Location: Rose Quarter Commons
Time: Registration 8:00 a.m.
o Event Start: 9:30 a.m.

Route Map: http://makingstrides.acsevents.org/site/Do
cServer/MSABC_POR_5_mile_Route_map__11
.pdf?docID=188554

Parking - $2 to park in the parking structure if you park by 8:30a

Best to get there between 8 and 8:30a, ceremony starts at 9 and walk immediately after. Last year we made sure we were near the front, made the walk a lot easier.

Wear pink if you have it. They usually have bagels (dry) available afterwards.

Sherwoodcycler - I agree, it was windy! I was walking with my DD (we did the 10K as well, but not up to the monastery) - We started at 8:30 so if you were on the road then, it definitely could have been me that your DH spotted. I was wearing my great Spark zip-up hoodie too! Next planned walk is in Longview (Earth Day Walk) next weekend. What about you?

Hey Heartintent...we might've spotted you at Amity. I took my dh (he's not a sparker) and he said he saw a person in a spark shirt. We ended up doing the 10 k back from the monastery to town....it wasy windy but nice. Took lots of pics, too.

What's your next volkswalk planned?

Info on the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk on Saturday, May 8th.

You can purchase shirts at the event.

The miles they had for the walk on the brochure are incorrect. There are two lengths, 2.5 miles or 5 miles, not 2 and 4.

The 2.5 mile route can be found at: http://main.acsevents.org/site/DocServer/M
SABC_POR_2.5_mile_Route_map__10.pdf?do
cID=134260

The 5.0 mile route can be found at: http://main.acsevents.org/site/DocServer/M
SABC_POR_5_mile_Route_map__10.pdf?docI
D=134258

If you haven't registered online, you can do so at any time. I have a team called "Dancing the Cancer Away" if you'd like to join us. There is no cost.

You can also register the day of the event. Registration starts at 8:00a with the walk starting at 9:30a.

Hi, All! Just wanted to let all you Portland, Oregon, area folks know that there is a Take Shape for Life Kickoff on Friday, January 8th, starting promptly at 7pm at the Embassy Suites Washington Square (lasts about an hour). It's a chance to hear about the program and meet some of us who have had success with it.

I can't believe how incredible this program is. I've already lost 45 pounds, and hubby has lost 52 (took us each about 3.5 months). We were getting asked about it all the time, so I became a health coach to share my success (and struggles) and help others with the program. I'm happy to answer any questions you might have individually, but wanted to make sure everyone knew about the kickoff event in case you want to check it out. Feel free to ask for me if you come. Of if you just want more info on Take Shape for Life, you can visit http://www.healthy4alifetime.tsfl.com.

Here's the info on the next Orienteering Event at
Milo McIver State Park near Estacada OR
Aug 01 2009 You don't have to be a member, the general public is encouraged to participate.

Come out and enjoy the summer sun at Milo McIver State Park!

We will be using a newly revised map of the area and will be offering courses for all levels: beginner to advanced.

4 courses are being planned.

Beginner (White) Controls will be almost entirely located using trails. Great for first timers.

Intermediate (Yellow) A little more challenging as controls can not always be reached directly using trails. Longer and a little more route choice.

Low-Advanced (Orange)Longer courses, more route choice, more focus on reading the features on the map.

Advanced (Green) Longer and more challenging terrain than Orange course. A little more blood, sweat and tears involved!!

After the event, feel free to enjoy other activities at the park, including using picnic facilities, disc golf, and cool down along the Clackamas River!

As always, beginner instruction will be available.

Registration is open from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Starts will be staggered between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Free beginner's clinics will be offered from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

Event fees:
$8 - individual (non-member)
$12 - group (non-member)
$2 - extra color map copy
$1 - compass rental

**Please note: there is a $3 Daily Day Use fee for this park**

This counts on your Fitness Tracker as a Hike or if you prefer to run it...

Hope to See you there!!!

Dennis - First of all CONGRATS on your weightloss! That is terrific! I cant make the skate party this weekend, but what a great idea for a future Spark-Rally? I have talked with others about skating, and really hadnt given Oaks Park a thought, but your post "sparked" me -- will have to see if we can "make an evening of it sometime!" Enjoy your time --

I'm having a "50 Pounds Rolled Away" party at Oaks Park roller skating rink this Monday, July 20th from 7-9 p.m. Admission is $6 plus two cans of food for Esther's Pantry (It's a food bank, not some greedy gal named Esther). I'm currently only 1 pound away from the 50 lb mark, having gone from 234 to 185!

And although it's the monthly gay and lesbian skate night, this is open to everybody and is family-friendly. This is more of a just a "show up, introduce yourself and skate" get together rather than a party, per se, so there's no need to RSVP. I'll be wearing a purple t-shirt and a nametag, and you'll recognize my ugly mug from my sparkpage. See ya there?

There is a 5K and 8K in April called "Run for the Cheetah". Takes place near the zoo and part of your entrance fee goes to cheetah habitat support. The race is April 26, you can sign up for $30, and once you finish your walk/jog/run, you can go visit the zoo!

I do Portland to Coast with my work. It's SO much fun, but please do a lot of pre walking before the big day. I didn't and every part of me was SO sore afterwards. Also reserve your vans today, if you haven't already. All rental passanger vans go quick closer to the event. I'll look for you guys this year. I'll be in the "Taxing on the Feet" van :)

I am terrible with names, but if you go to the various websites (koin.com, katu.com, kgw.com, kpdx.com) you should find links to health reporters, local interest reporters, etc. I'm betting this would be something that the health reporters would be interested in.

Great idea!

Does anyone know of any Portland to Coast walking teams that might still be looking for a member? Or is anyone interested in joining in to create a team?

I will be out of town for both Race for the Cure and the Portland Marathon, I'm a bit bummed. Not ready for a 2 mile run but would love to do a walk. Maybe next year.

The Portland Marathon (Oct 5) has a 2-mile mini-run. It's only $15 per person. I signed up my 8yo daughter and myself, and we have both made it a goal that we will run the entire distance with no stopping or walking! We're going to go to the school track to see how many laps we can run without stopping as a way to gauge how close we are to that goal.

I've been (off-and-on) training with the Couch to 5K program, using the mixes from podrunner.com, and this week, I should be able to run 20 min without stopping. That seems daunting at this point, but the program says I should be able to do it, and they've been right so far.

"The past tempts us, the present confuses us, and the future frightens us ...and our lives slip away, moment by moment, lost in that vast, terrible in-between." - JMS (Babylon 5)

Yes, Bridge Pedal is a lot of fun for every age group and every skill level. I've gone several years and will be going again this year.

My wheel was in bad shape last year and I had to get a loaner wheel just before the start and got stuck in the slower family section. I never did catch up to my son and his friend and they closed the Fremont bridge just before I got there.

This year, I have a new wheel with more spokes (stronger) and will show up early and ready! I hope, with my continued weight loss, to quit breaking spokes in my rear wheel--especially since I'll be starting to bike to work soon.

HI all

If you want to have some fun Bridge Pedal is August 10th. You can do 6, 8, or 11 Bridges. This is such a fun event with lots of rest stops and big parties on top of the Marquam and Fremont Bridges. emoticon

Also if you want to learn more about Portland's Bike routes there is the Portland Century on August 24. You can chose 25, 50, or 100 miles.

I am doing both. 11 bridges and the 50 mile option for the century. emoticon

We only have one life....Enjoy with no regrets.
