Compost garden - what a concept!

I'm with you Marilyn, I was supposed to sow my early cold tolerant seeds last week but got delayed with the final tilling and then got this headcold that has me on the couch worn out from nothing but blowing my nose!!

Some of my very best veggies volunteered in the compost pile! I wish they'd do that everywhere.

Good idea, Dee. Heck, if it keeps raining, my garden will never get in the ground.

Never did anything with lupine so can't help there...

'Volunteers' spring up in the garden and I've put them in line with the others and some did fine. Let the 'volunteers' grow up in the compost too and they produced the best! Thinking I should just throw my seeds in the compost to begin with and scrap the structured garden with all the work!

I keep a lot of seed in the fridge. So I use this testing of seeds all the time. Works great.

My circumstances do not dictate my attitude

Some of us are held to higher standards, some of us hold our self's to higher standards. (who are you?)

I am not sure about the hairlooms but my Father used to say that it was best to pull up the volunteers as he did not feel they produced as well. Personally, I think you sould mark a couple of them and just see how they do. Let us know.

I have some plants popping up from dropped seeds. Some are sunflowers, and I think I have tomatoes popping up. Will the tomatoes bear fruit, or should I yank them? Except for the beefsteaks, they were all heirloom variteies.

It is definitely worth a try.

I have never had any success with Lupine. Do you have to score the seeds (hard surface) for them to sprout? Just wondering. Thanks, Sunny

Great idea...

"Too frugal to toss them, I'm testing a sample from each packet. I rolled five seeds in a small piece of paper towel, put the labeled samples side-by-side in a plastic bag, then misted them with water. I also tucked in samples of larkspur, poppy, lupine, zinnia, and hyacinth bean; then ziplocked the bag. It's near a heating vent to speed germination. In five days, I'll check for sprouting; again in seven, 10, 12, and 14 days. Seeds showing roots are good to plant. Rotted and non-sprouting seeds and their original packs get recycled in the compost pile."
