Rhubarb just does it's thing out in the garden so it's starting to sprout up. Had never tasted it before we got this house 2 years ago and it was in the garden. Didn't even know what it was until a visitor pointed it out!

Kitties aren't allowed in the room where I have the window greenhouse so it's not a problem. Otherwise I'm more concerned about them eating the stuff than I am them 'making' in the dirt! Over the winter they got in where I had garlic cloves rooting and they had grown green tops. Ashley at the tops - weird to have a cat with garlic breath!

So far my lettuce is not doing well indoors. I'm going to start with some greenhouse ones and every two weeks plant a few more seeds so there's a steady supply through the season.

All the seeds I planted 5 days ago are coming up like wild-fire . . . however, the Romaine is looking a bit "too leggy." Perhaps I should have started those seeds directly outdoors & taken my chances with our 'ify' Arkansas weather?

Happy Gardening Everyone!

How's your Rhubarb doing Dee? ... and, this is a bit embarrassing to ask but how do you keep your kitties from using your newly-planted garden as a "outdoor litter box" ?

Do you use coffee grounds? I was told that keeps kitties from doing that in a garden and was wondering if you had any other secrets on this topic.

Hmm - guess my favorite tomatoes are the roma and I canned those last year. I planted lettuce, beans and other stuff. More this year - carrots, beets, spinach, several kinds of beans.

On apple trees, all branches growing upward or crossing needs to be trimmed. Here's more info:

I did prune the sour cherry tree last year in the same manner thinking I was pruning the apple tree but it did fine. Didn't know if I needed to do it or not...

We have only planted sweet corn and won't plant other things until April 15th.
Dee why do you prune apple trees??? We never prune our apples or pears but we do prune our peaches, apricots and plums. Didn't know you were supposed to prune the apples and pears...o we don't prune the cherries either??
Been a busy day today and we have rain!!! We have needed it as we haven't had the winter rains like we usually do. Have a good rest of the day.

Since we're due for rain today thought I'd at least pull up the marigolds, rake and get the manure and sand spread.

Got the asparagus garden fixed a bit and saw one popping up already. This is the second year so I get to harvest half the crop and had to cover them a little more with dirt as first year they like it more shallow.

The great garlic experiment: put the garlic bulbs in I'd planted inside over winter. They are well rooted but not sure how this will all work out with them. Stay tuned... :)

Rhubarb is starting to show, gotta get the apple trees pruned but while out and about today I noticed there are several people behind in the apple tree pruning - guess because of the bad winter as it's usually done end of January.

Still have to get the compost in and till the soil. Should already have beans and peas planed but running late so I started a few inside in my window sill 'greenhouse' if you've caught my blog!

Have a sparklin' day! Dee
