Hi MNB,
I had a gastric sleeve in 2006, as the first part of a two part Doudenal switch. I lost about 100 pounds in that year with the sleeve. If I can answer any questions for you, or share experiences, let me know.... Congrats on doing your research...and good luck! Mary

Good luck with your Vertical Gastric Sleeve!

You may want to check out the Gastric Sleevers team. They are a fairly active team and are specifically for your type of surgery.

emoticon Hello all, my name is Barbara and I will be scheduling my Gastric Sleeve surgery here in the next week or so, I am full of excitement with a little side of nerves emoticon I was in another group but they seem to only be focused on Gastric Bypass so its nice to find a group that is more well rounded. I look forward to sharing my story and reading more about others. I also hope to meet new friends in the process.

Welcome Maryam! Glad you found us. Good luck on your journey. I have a blog on my sparkpage that is the resources I recommend to people just starting out on the journey.
To read it you will need to friend me.

I wanted to send you a welcome sparkgoodie by your sparkpage is either not set up or is set to private. In order for us to send a sparkgoodie (internet picture and note) we need to be a friend on your sparkpage. The start page has information on starting a sparkpgae (sparkpage can be found under the tab for community). My sparkpage is set to enable friends to see my page so you will have to friend me before I can friend you. Just click on the link to my sparkpage on the posts.

This is one of only a couple of really active teams for weight loss surgery. Our sparkpages will show you which teams we each belong to.

Hello! I'm Maryam. Happy belated birthday to Cindy and Celia! Hope you both had a wonderful day! I am new to SparkPeople and to WLS. I have been referred by my PCP for bariatric surgery. My insurance will cover 100% for gastric bypass after I am monitored for 6 months. I am just starting the 6 month process...almost done with my first month. SparkPeople was recommended to me from the WLS center. I have been browsing around, but not finding an active WLS team........... any suggestions for other teams? Thanks!

Happy Birthday. My birthday is the 25th. Try not to focus so much on specific numbers for goals but on other things like being able to walk xx blocks or miles without stopping to rest. Or exercising x minutes in a day or week for x weeks or months (put star on calendar to show successes) Or following my food plan for x days in a row. In this way you will not be disappointed when you have done your best and the scale does not show the number you want.
Why don't you join the Gastric Bypass Sparklers Team? It is much more active than this team and I think you would enjoy the people. I will send you an invite.

I feel so good right now! The first goal I set for the new year was to be under 200 lbs by Jan. 1. Well, I missed that by a little over 3 lbs. Well, the next goal was to be the same size I was in Aug. of 2010 when I moved to Memphis. I was 180 and in a size 14. Today, I bought a skirt in a size 14 and a dress and shirt in a LARGE (the equivalent of a 14). I'm so happy I did this for myself. When I tell people I've had surgery, they'll say, "Oh, that's why you're losing weight." No, surgery didn't do it. I did it! Surgery was a tool. I exercise at least 5 hours a week. I follow the diet my surgeon told me to follow. I worked for every inch and pound. And I'm going to continue until I reach my goal.

I'm down another 4.6 lbs. this week! That's 16.4 for the month and when I measured, I've lost 12 inches over my whole body! My next goal is to be the weight I was when I met my partner by my birthday on Feb. 14. I was 180 when we met 20 months ago. Let's do it!

Sorry I have not checked this team in a few days. I usually check daily on only the Gastric Bypass Sparklers Team.
Sounds like you are really starting to enjoy exercising! That is good. Keep up the exercise and keeping changing up the exercises you do and you will be able to keep going.

I worked out for 90 min today and it felt sooo good! I did 30 min on the stationary bike when I got off work (random hills on level 5). Then I went to an hour long salsa class. So much fun!

Celia, If you are worried about restarting your exercise after you heal why don't you check in each day on the exercise check-in and let us know how you are healing and when you think you be able to return to regular exercise. There may be some exercises you can do that you do not normally do but which could help you still do some form of exercise and when healed you can return to your normal forms of exercise. When you are ready to return to full exercise we can all celebrate with you! Tracy and Charlene are great at supporting the others on the thread. You may be surprised to find that you miss the exercise. In a few days check to see how you are feeling and then when you are ready start slow and build back up so you do not re-injure.

Celia, I understand what you mean. Back in the "old" days, taking time out to heal from an injury or an illness meant easily relapsing into some bad eating habits. But, hopefully you are finding that your sleeve (I think I recall you did the sleeve) "talks" to you and reminds you that what you used to do won't work now. So even though you can't get out and exercise means you just fight and win the battle with food -- really good things that will fill you up and keep you satisfied!

Hope you feel better soon (if you are not already there!)

Yes, ma'am. I will allow my body time to heal and rest. I really wasn't thinking about it from a weight loss perspective. More often than I care to admit, when it came to consistency with my health, I was on-again, off-again. I have gotten to the point where i am being consistent and I hated to lose my streak. But I'm going to do what's smart for my body. Thanks for the advice.

Celia, You need to take care of your illness first. Stopping exercise for a few days in order to get well will not affect your weight loss. Exercising when ill can make you sicker as you need your energy for healing and exercise is expending that healing energy.

Thanks, guys! I so agree with you, Mitch. I have been sick since last Wed. I continued to exercise up until Sat. I just had so much congestion that it was too hard to breathe. But I had been exercising at least 6 days a week so to not exercise has been hard.

I know personally how good that feels. One thing I am running into, and it is a good thing, is that I have energy that I need to burn! Hence I am all fired up to get to the Y or to do some other physical activity. What a nice feeling!

Today's my day off so I've decided to get in 3 hours of exercise today. I did an hour and 15 min line dancing. I'm doing an hour and 15 min with my sparkbuddy. THen 30 min walk with my boo, if I can convince her to go with me.

Thanks. I joined Overeaters Anonymous Jan of 2011, attended a few face to face meetings, then did online meetings for a few months and quit. I think I need to look into starting back.

Surgery does not take away your food issues. It just helps with portion control. You will need to learn to identify what is triggering your head hunger and then find a way to move beyond it. Do not replace eating something with watching someone eat what you want. Learn why you are experiencing the head hunger and resolve the issue then you will not need to watch someone else eat the food or eating it yourself.

Hi, team! It's been 22 days since my surgery (gastric sleeve) and I have lost 21 pounds. I am amazed and proud because I am putting in a lot of work. I'm exercising 4-5 hours a week and I'm definitely following my surgeons instructions with my diet. I must admit that at times I miss eating. And I miss eating some of those things I used to eat. I've been craving a big juicy burger with cheese but no bun. And I've been dreaming of rotisserie chicken and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I actually asked my partner to order something I liked just so I could watch her eat it! (I know I'm crazy). But most days, it's not an issue. All in all, I have no regrets about my surgery. If nothing else, it has caused me to really make the time for exercise. No excuses.

Celia, It takes a couple of months to regain your energy levels. When you are eating so few calories your body needs everything you eat to function and so little is left for energy. If you are not getting veggies and fruit in which is a great energy source then try adding some to give your body some carbs for energy. Speak with your dietician about your food plan and your lack of energy. They will help you refine your food plan and with your exercise you will soon have more energy. Keep exercising as it is helping with your energy levels even if it does not feel like it.

I had my surgery on Dec. 20 so I know that's not a lot of time but I am really struggling with my energy level. I'm exercising at least an hour 4-5 days a week. I'm taking my vitamins and getting a b12 shot once a week. I had my 2 week post op visit Thursday. My surgeon says this is normal as my body is losing a lot a weight. It's going thru a lot of changes. It's just making my life very difficult. I don't have energy to do anything. If I exercise, that's all I have energy to do. That means not being able to plan like I want for my job or housework. Can anyone tell me how long this lasts?

Casey, Go to www.wlsfa. org The weight loss surgery foundation of america is a 501C3 which raises funds to assist people who medically need weight loss surgery but who either have no medical insurance or whose medical insurance does not cover weight loss surgery but who medically need the WLS.

Check out this website: www.obesitylaw.com/ They are an advocacy group. There's a lot of good info on there. I hope this helps. When I go to my doctor's office Monday, I can check with his office manager about possible national organizations that could be of assistance.

Wisconsin. My surgeon new of no option other than his trying to get coverage thru his HMO ( I was denied of course) I have looked for supplemental ins and any other way to make this happen for over 6 months,,,What do I pay my premiums for if I can't get covered for needed services. My other concern if I pay out ouf pocket and then have complications there will be no coverage for those either....it will be catastrophic

I am so sorry that you are having that issue. It makes no sense to not cover bariatric surgery when your BMI is above 35 and you have comorbidities. When I was in the seminar my surgeon held for people considering the surgery, he mentioned that there were organizations that were willing to help for those people without insurance or insurance will not cover. Do you have a surgeon in mind that you would like to perform your surgery? If so, I would suggest contacting their office and asking about options for those people whose insurance will not cover bariatric surgery. Where do you live, if I may ask?

I am new to this team. I have a BMI of 39 and have been considering surgery for about 3 years. Now with 7 medications and 6 co morbidities and 2 kids 7 and 12 , my MD has strongly suggested surgery. My trouble is my insurance will not cover anything related to obesity related services.......I have been submitting info related to why I need this life saving procedure and yesterday spoke with the appeals committee as to why I am a candidate, I tried to explain the cost of my care with meds and all the md visits and blood work is over 20 K a year and when I have a hear attack or stroke they will pay hundreds of thousands of dollar for rehab and care and I could be permanently disabled. I also provided studies that show surgery can cure type II diabetes and reduce the risks of stroke hear attack depression and cancer...i CANNOT UNDERSTAND HOW AN INSURANCE COMPANY CAN DENY A MEDICALLY NECESSARY LIFE PROLONGING HEALTHY OPTION. The only feedback I got from this group of 12 was the really old( like 80), retired family MD suggested I had no willpower and I was fat because I was overeating. Yet I provided documentation from all the nutrition people and and diets I have tried...I am dejected and fear I will have to pay out of pocket for the care that I need. and I really don't have 20 to 60 grand (depending on the procedure) to pay. Any one have success with non covered services being covered?

You are doing awesome, Mitch! Keep up the good (and hard) work!

I have a surgery date. Dec. 27. Because I have lost weight during the 6 months, he only is requiring me to lose an additional 2 pounds. I have fallen off with my eating and I have not been exercising. Gotta get back on it.

Oh, by the way, I've decided to have the gastric sleeve rather than the band. And again, I'm glad you're doing so well.

CELIA1975, it goes very well. Down 35 pounds since surgery, have had to go out and find replacement clothes due to the previous ones just being too darned big! What is especially good about lapband is the weight is coming off gradually, so my body and I get a chance to get used to less weight.

As for others -- all I can say is that it is your body, your life. They are entitled to their opionions, but you have to do what feels right. I had a few naysayers in my journey, but I am glad I listened to me first! And that is not something I have done in the past, so there are some extra victories to be had.

My only other advice to to remember the band is just a tool. You still have to be vigilant about what you eat, when you eat, exercise, etc. BUT...it is the BEST tool I have ever had in my quest to a healthier life, so if you approach it from that perspective, you will do just fine!

Listen to your heart, it will guide you the right way.

I am so excited! I had my labs and tests (ekg, ultrasound, xray) done last week. Tomorrow I meet with the surgeon. I have no idea what this will entail. I was told to allow 2-3 hrs. I really wish my partner could come to this visit. She does not want me to have the surgery. She has some fears about it. And her sister-in-law was not help. She had gastric bypass some years ago. She lost 150 pounds. She has gained a lot of it back and is now in the process of "doing it on her own,'" as she put it. She also talked about a hernia and the issues it caused. (I kind of tuned her out actually). She has never seen me, just my facebook pic and she said I didn't look big enough to need the surgery. (I was 180 in the pic. I'm 5' 2". I had gotten up to 241). I told her that I actually had put on 60 pounds since that picture. I'm down to 222. When I said that, she said, "Well, if you did that, you can do it on your own." I just thanked her for the information. I know she thought she was being helpful, but I didn't just walk into this. I've done my research, talked/emailed those who have had it. My insurance company wouldn't have approved me, if I didn't meet the criteria. I know I don't have to explain that to you all. I guess I just need to vent. How's everyone else doing? Mitch, update please. Lol. I'd love to hear how things are going.

I've been approved! I opened up my voicemail because my partner told me she was unable to leave me a voicemail. My message indicator was not even on. The bariatric nurse had left me a message yesterday saying, Congratulations, everything's a go! I couldn't believe it. I was talking to my psychiatrist yesterday about the surgery saying I really hope I get approved. Now I'm so ready to get in with my doc to get all the particulars. I know the surgery is covered 100%, but I think I have to pay 20% of the doctor's fee and I don't know what else. Some of the money I had set aside, I used $300 of it the pay part of my bill for my hospital stay last week. I was concerned about them approving with me being admitted to a psychiatric hospital around the same time paperwork was submitted. Anyway, all is well on all fronts. I just needed an adjustment on my meds. I'm so thankful. I wonder if my doctor's office is open tomorrow.

Fingers are crossed and a silent prayer has been said. It has been so worth the effort. I feel like a changed person, and I bet you will too if the insurance co gives you the approval (as they should!)

My paperwork has been submitted to the insurance company. I should hear something either the 29th or 30th.

I am at the very beginning of the process. My doctor recommended that I have the surgery 3 years ago. I told her that I wanted to continue to try and do it on my own. Now 3 years later and 20 pounds heavier, I have finally decided to have the surgery. I have gone to the seminar and have my first appt next week. I have decided to have the sleeve done. I have contacted my insurance company and they will not cover any of it. So instead of letting that weaken my resovle, I am looking in to refinancing my house to be able to pay for it. Hopefully since my insurance will not cover it I won't have to go through so many hoops to have it done.

Hello all, i'm new to this team and this discussion. Great to hear so many positives. I've done my rersearch, and after a 2 month wait, finally got my paperwork to go to the seminar on the 28th. Wow, what a wait! Anyone dealing with Tricare Prime? I'm pretty sure i'm going to have the bypass.

So far so good! Scale is being friendly to me, I'm pretty much in the "soft foods" part of the learning to eat again process, and my surgeon last week gave me the green light to resume all normal physical activities, which feels great!! Bowled in my league last week, doing strength training at the Y, and even shot some hoops on my own today! About the only two foods that have not agreed with me so far is tuna from the can (although I found if I warmed it up and mixed it with some eggs it works out fine) and baby carrots (clearly not ready for that yet!!). But as everyone has told me, no two "banders" and their experiences are alike, so the only way you find out what works is by trying things.

Good luck Barb! The changes take some time to get used to, but worth effort now and down the road.

hello:

I just joined this team. I'm in the process of having a gastric sleeve. I'm working on doing my documentation for the insurance company. I have one more month and hope to have the surgery in the beginning of December.

Yesterday I had my pre op session regarding vitamins. So I need to decide what Vitamins to use. So many decisions. I'm working to start eating every three to four hours. I'm not having a lot of success with this. But hopefully it will improve. I have set my calendar timer so hopefully that will help.

Take care.

Barb

CELIA1975, just wanted to let you know I am doing quite well since my "banding" last Wednesday 9/28. Clear liquids Wed/Thu, liquids with protein added yesterday and today (in fact I have some high-protein chicken cream soup sitting in the micro -- just waiting for on of my dogs to come in!). Tomorrow I will start trying pureed foods but it will be slow -- maybe one meal and then just liquid with proteins the other two. Lots of advice telling me to take it slow, so I want to take advantage of what experienced people are telling me!

What surprised me was the weight loss the week before surgery when I switched to a mostly liquid diet and 1000 calories. Gave me an unexpected yet welcome jump start!

Anyway, hope all is well with you and your date is on the horizon. Based on 4 days, it has been more than worth it!

WOW -- One week and counting! Enjoying some foods that I won't be able to eat post-band, but after today, crunch time starts -- 1000 calories per day, high protein, low carbs. My wife and I went out last weekend to stock up on items I am allowed to eat, so I am set.

Excited, nervous, scared, happy...but READY!!

This morning I called my surgeon's office to confirm they really did get the authorization (they did!) and then my insurance co to make sure it is REALLY covered at 100% (it is!).

Sooooo....it is on for 09/28/2011!

Ironic kind of day. Called my surgeon's office at lunchtime and asked if they had heard from my insurance co. They told me they had just faxed the info off on 8/29, so maybe a little early to hear back.

Then... a message from the surgeon's office shortly after 4pm (of course I was on a conference call!): They received the authorization!

But....I want to make ABSOLUTELY sure that it is covered 100% as the insurance co told me. A few more phone calls tomorrow. But, I can feel the excitement, the tension, the anxiety! As I told one of my co-workers who had gastric bypass done may years ago (2002), I can't wait to stop being a slave to food! As you can imagine, she more than understood!

More to follow....

Still waiting on the insurance co. I have the dates I'll be out of work blocked off in my calendar, have chatted with my manager and a few co-workers, so now I just need to know they (insurance co) are approving the lap band procedure. Anxious....

Katrin1004, so how's it going (besides the energy level)? I have 2 more weigh ins then I will have met the insurance company's criteria. Next month will be six months with a nutritionist. Since I've started this process, I have lost 25 pounds. I'm pleased but I know I have a long way to go. 110 would put me in a normal BMI range. I think I would feel too small at that weight so I'm aiming for 100. THis is the thing, now that I'm getting closer, I'm getting scared. Did any of you feel this way. Then whenever I blog or mention on another team that I'm in the process of having the surgery, they talk about how I've been able to lose this much weight without it and how my eating habits will be changed for life and blah, blah, blah. I can tell you, sometimes the eating thing does scare me. So what's your diet like right now. Are you in any pain? How long before you can resume normal activity?

Congrats, Patrick! I got the results of my EGD and colonoscopy. I'm having spasms in my colon. That's what's causing the stomach pain. Still not sure about the back pain. She made a referral to the neurologist so I'm just waiting to hear back from him. And we're trying out another sinus med. Nothing we've tried has helped so far. (I also found out I have a hiatal hernia but bariatric surgeon says that's not a problem.)

Patrick, I am so happy for you... things are really starting to roll.
I am 1 week sleeve post op today. Having trouble keeping my energy level up. Walking every days as required. Just no stinking energy.

Mind over matter. I mind being overweight and it does matter.

Had my pre-op consult on 8/22. Two items still needed to be done: 1) Blood work (got that done yesterday AM; 2) Return visit to the pulmonary Dr so he could go over the results of my breathing tests and chest x-ray. Being the geek that I am, I normally like to hear and see this sort of stuff. But unknown to me, they sandwiched my appointment in, and had to wait 2 HOURS to see the Dr!

The good news is the pulmonary Dr sees no issues so he is sending his clearance to my surgeon. So all I am waiting on is the blood work.

The date: September 28, 2011. Assuming no issues with the blood work and the insurance co approves.

Wonderful news PLMitch, now you know what to plan on.

My PreOP appointment is set for this Wednesday 8/10/11 10am...
It's on the East side of Dallas, and I live real close to Ft Worth.
Morning traffic here is terrible, it takes forever to go anywhere.
At least a 1 hr drive form here to there.

Mind over matter. I mind being overweight and it does matter.

OK - apparently a mix-up at my surgeon's office -- I guess they had me penciled in for this Friday even though I told them that would not work (or maybe it was last Friday - I'm not too sure!). In any case, I have my pre-op consult on 8/22 so we'll come up with a surgery date during that appt. Given all of the stuff I have going on at work, I'm going to push for a October date, since I need to assume worst case and block out 2 weeks for recovery (hopefully it won't take that long, but need to plan).

More to follow....

I hear you,Mitch, but I don't think I should have to explain my motives to anyone. When I got this long email (from a sparkfriend) about the surgery and its dangers, I politely sent back. Thank you for the info and your concern. When my therapist made a comment about side effects and then she mentioned gas, I just looked at her. I never commented. I have decided that's pretty much going to be my two standard responses.

I know you will get it worked out soon, Mitch. I wish your wife well with her extraction. I had one removed a few years ago. It actually wasn't that bad.

I think one of the issues that comes up in the minds of those who we confide in about WLS is they assume we are weak people who have no will power! Also, they may be thinking of just gastric bypass, which clearly is more complex and does have it fair share of post op complications. I think all we can do is calmly inform folks who question our motives about the realities of WLS and why we are considering doing what we are doing. Each story is unique, but at the end of the day, we are all just trying to become healthier.

OK, I'm off the soapbox.

Still have not heard back from my surgeon's office on the preop consult date. I told them this coming week was not good due to a # of already scheduled appts + my wife is have two wisdom teeth removed, so I need to be around for her. The surgeon's office said the week of 8/15 was bad for them but the person I talked to seemed anxious to try to get my squeezed in. Oh well....

I am so happy for you guys! I have some time to go as I only started this process in May. So far I have lost 25 pounds on my own! Not bad. I ask myself, why did I have so much trouble before? A lady on another team made the statement that maybe when your 6 months is up, you won't have a need to have the surgery. I know that won't be true because my BMI will still be in the range that my insurance would consider given my sleep apnea. It's food for thought, but I don't have to think about it now. On another note, why is it that some people feel the need to try to warn you about weight loss surgery as if you have no clue as to what you're getting into. I have not met one person that has had it so far that has not researched it before hand. And if they hadn't the insurance company surely makes sure that it's not a quickly entered into decision. And if you have a good surgeon, he/she makes sure you are very informed. I know I'm preaching to the choir. I've just run into a couple lately, including my therapist (not my psychiatrist, who is all for this).

My surgeon's office called yesterday and I called them back today. They want to set up the pre-op consult (is it me or is there a TON of pre-op appointments for lapband??). Once I have that consult they will submit the paperwork to my insurance co (they have to include a surgery date in the package). Slowly but surely we are getting there....
