i knit when i get the craving. or go hide in my bedroom. for me the smoking was also a way to step away from a very stressful job. so now i just find something else to do or ingore the other people i work with

When I first quit and I wanted a smoke, I would go outside and walk a lap around my 2 acres. 2 months after quitting, I was craving walks instead of smokes, so that is how I found SparkPeople in the first place. And it has saved my life. Who knew that a $152 presciption would make such a huge change in my life.

I painted my toenails this morning when I had a craving. It helped pass the time and kept my hands busy so I couldn't smoke. Every little bit helps!

Unfortunalty, I end up chewing on pens, chewing gum, eating and chewing on my lip. It seems I need to do something more constructive with my mouth, so i think i will just sing really loud all the time.

I use hot cinnamon sticks when I get a craving. However, I have not fully quit yet. I am in the middle of quitting. I have cut down dramatically.

I have also read the book "The Easy Way to Quit Smoking" recommended by a client. It gave me a new perspective on smoking and what little there is to gain from the habit. I didn't quit immediately after reading, but have since and am now in my second week without cigs. Whenever I get a craving, I think about all the things I will lose by smoking, i.e. smoke-free clothing, taking deep breaths without coughing, etc. I hope this book works for you too! Good luck!

Awesome list. I plan on making a lot of hair bows to sell and starting up drawing and working on my "book in progress", playing Wii games with the kids, sucking on sugar free peppermints, cleaning etc. We smoke outside so as long as I'm inside busy I can't go smoke!!

Positive people bring positive changes!

I can do this!!!! And you can't stop me no matter what you try to do!!!

I like making jewelery because it keeps my hands busy and I get a reward in the end. Plus I can give them to friends which makes me feel happier.

i have found that dum dum pops work really well
but they are not so friendly on the teeth
but whats worse sweets on your teeth
or smoke in your lungs

My husband uses the patch and he also gets pain in the area he has placed it. So it doesn't sound uncommon for this to happen.

This is particularly helpful for FOOD SERVICE employees...

I still want to take my smoke breaks to get away from work for a few and to socialize with my smoker friends, so I blow bubbles instead!

I have been reading a pretty good book called "The Easy Way To Stop Smoking" by Allen Carr. It's an interesting approach, but it's different than anything I have read before and it's keeping my interest.
I have yet to quit, but I've been sick the last couple of days and it's really made me realize how bad I need to quit. WANT to quit!

cutting down doesnt work-youre just fooling yourself. maybe youre not ready to quit yet. if not its ok. you must have 100% motivation to make it. i dont feel it from you.

I tried using the patch as well and also had problems. At first I felt a tingling sensation and then later experienced pain on the place where I put it on my body. This was not only uncomfortable but worried me as I have poor circulation. I also tried nicotine gum but I have periodontal disease and the gum caused an eruption of mouth ulcers, this was awful. I have thought about trying chantix but now I have been seeing all kinds of commercials claiming that this also has caused problems. It looks like the only thing left is to quit without any help from stop-smoking aids. My plan now has been to cut down slowly. First I went from 13 one hundreds a day to 10 regular size cigarettes and now have switched over to light cigarettes. At first I smoked 13 light cigarettes a day but now I am back down to 10. I plan to cut down on the amount now. Hopefully this will work for me.

I tried to quit once with the use of the patch but stopped. I was smoking on the patch and it caused my ademma and heart palputations. I didn't even know that until someone at quitline.com told me that it couls easily cause the problems I was having. I decided that since I couldn't quit cold turkey and be on the patch that I seriously needed to stop the ademma. I want to try again. I did have a plan and list of things to do to keep my hands busy, that wasn't my problem, my problem was that I wore myself out trying to stay busy that I exhausted myself and sitting without doing anything is when I smoke. When I am busy I don't even think about smoking.
I will try again as I do want to quit.
I know my mind set has to be where it is ready so I am praying that God will find that perfect time for me in the near future.

I haven't quit yet but one thing that helps keep me busy and has helped me to cut down is playing video games with my son. I get caught up in the game and it also keeps my hands busy.

When the urge hits me, I take a big long drink of cold water. I figured out I was really only missing that second or two when I first lit up, so the water seems to be a great substitute.

Tomorrow will be a test....I am going to the karaoke bar with friends. My worst cravings come with the combination of alcohol and smoking friends, wish me luck everyone! I love karaoke, and don't wanna give that up, but I promised my son that I was done smoking, so I intend to be!!! emoticon

Love the Woody Harrelson quote. I will use that. As for things to do instead of smoking, DISTRACT seems to work the best for me. I have to listen to my body, and remember that I am not having a physical craving, but a mental one. I know it will take a bit of time for that pang to stop whenever I think of something that normally would involve smoking, like lunch break. The most important thing for me is staying in the now. I know I can do this if I do it one day at a time, one hour at a time, one minute at a time for now.

Persevere. Even if you fall on your face, you have moved forward.

Take a really deep breathe... or several. Heard it from Woody Harrelson on a documentary, he said he had a friend that realized when he was quitting that when he wanted a cigarette his body was really just craving a deep breathe. Sounds silly but it's working for me!emoticon

My quit date is March 1 2010
I am gearing my brain up for the Quit
I want to live
I want to breath
I want to be healthy
I want to smell good
I want my home to smell good
I want my car to smell good
I want people to come to visit me that are non smokers
I want my grandchildren to visit me more and be healthy
I want to save money
I want to live

I have been going thru every topic on this Team
I am trying to be as pro-active and positive as I can to look forward to meeting my goal
The support sounds great, and the words of wisdom are beginning to sink in that I Can Do It after smoking for 40+ years, I want to be smoke free for the next 40+++++ years.

Wash ceilings and walls or scrub anything!!....it will help get rid the cig smell and it's hard to smoke with wet hands.

Here's a few I came up with (: --
(Btw, sorry ahead of time if any of these are previously listed!)
- Color a fuzzy poster
- Leave smokes @ home. Start driving. (Just don't end up @ the convenience store buying more :P)
- IM chat w/ your best friend. If they love you, they'll give you hell for wanting to cave. And since they're your BF, you won't lie to them. Unless you're really THAT addicted, but you'll end up feeling guilty afterwards, so it still works.
- Cuddle with your dog.
- Wash your dog.
- If you have a small animal (Hamster, bird, ferret, etc), put them somewhere safe & clean their cage top to bottom, inside/out.
- I second the caramel lollipop. That'll keep ya busy. (:
- Find a PenPal who's going thru the same thing. Write them whenever the craving hits.

I have been struggling for awhile with not smoking, I have been on the patch forever. I did really well for 2 months and then went to the bar. I love doing half the things on this list and look forward to picking them up again!

If you are a crafter, I suggest getting a page on ravelry.com. I have found many projects and knit/crochet after meals to keep my hands/brain busy.

Every morning before I put on my patch. I cried...I smoked for 30 years.. I had to mourn the loss of these old friends... I cried hard, blew my nose, put on my patch... and moved on ... Don't forget its okay to cry , there are healing in those tears...

My husband was laughing at me a few nights ago because I had an awful day at work, and was only 6 days into not smoking, so instead of smoking, I made three different desserts and vacuumed the house. I needed something I couldn't leave to do. Funny thing is, I don't eat desserts, so they are sitting on my counter as a little reminder to me. :) He was amused, I was relieved that it worked. 9 days free, now.

I thought I was the only one who did the loud singing in the car to curb the driving cravings. LOL on the plus side it also seems to brighten other peoples days watching me make a fool of myself.

41. Walk in an old graveyard with the man you love.
42. Get your jammies on early, and park yourself in front of your computer for the night.
43. Hang on dearly to a caramel apple sucker.
44. Sing loudly.
45. Practice smiling in the mirror (releases endorphins)!
46. Make lists of pros and cons of smoking.
47. Find gross smoking disease pictures.
48. Play with Silly Putty.
49. Whistle "Don't Worry - Be Happy."
