I set up the college student challenge here:
http://teams.sparkpeople.com/Fall09College

We're not going to officially start until September 1st, but join now and introduce yourself. I guess if we get enough people interested, we could always start earlier!

Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anyone was interested in doing a challenge for fall. My school is on the quarter system, so I would probably set it up to follow that (meaning starting at the beginning of September and ending around finals in December). Everyone could set their own goals, and we could do biggest loser-like contests some weeks, exercise challenges, or anything else that people suggest. I think it would be fun to keep it more or less to college-aged people since we have some stuff in common.

Anyway, message me if you're interested and I'll figure out the details. And spread the word to others--the more the merrier!

Hey guys! I just came across this thread, and it sounds like it applies to me. I'm starting college in the fall, so basically trying to lose 25 pounds, while AVOIDING the awful freshman 15!!! School starts in 3 weeks, so I'll see what I can do by then.

There is less than 2 weeks until classes start for me and I have FINALLY gotten back into the groove of cardio and making better choices about what I eat. I still have a lot to work on but I am thankful for this site and everyone helping to give that extra push I truly needed!

Hi Everybody,

I know I'm pretty late, but I'd love to slip in for the last month before school starts. I've had a rough summer and packed on 20 lbs since the end of May. My goal is to lose 10 lbs (reach 130) by August 31st. I look forward to sharing success with everybody! Add me :)

I'm trying to get slimmer before a reunion I have in October. I'm going to see a lot of people I haven't seen in a long time, and I want to look my best. Looking past the fall, though, I'm also trying to slim down for my spring break trip. I have a cruise booked, so I want to be looking as good as can be. I know I won't be at my goal, but if I can be even 30 pounds lighter than I am now, that would be great! I think I can totally do that by March!

I'm really trying to eat healthy and exercise enough that way I will be in the habit once school starts. I know if it will be really easy to go back to my old ways once school starts and I'm around bad influences again.

We'll see what happens and good luck everyone!

Good job everyone!

I was planning on losing 30 pounds this summer, but if you examine my weight tracker you will see that that didn't work haha. Now I'm just trying to get down to 159 (out of the 160s!) before I move back to school August 17. I barely saw any results this first week, but maybe I the first week was just getting my body in gear and now it's ready to drop some pounds. I really hope so, I was trying to lose a pants size before I went shopping. (I only have a week now...don't know if that's gonna happen but I can hope!)

I'm trying to eat as healthy as possible (it's a slow battle with the emotional eating) and work out as much as I can. I'm already moderately active so I am really trying to push my body to get results.

Good luck everyone!

MyMayGon it is so impressive you were able to do that while abroad! Congrats-I think what ever you are doing will work for the last nine :) AND I totally agree about your goals idea!

Everyday I try to make the goal of 1)maintaining my weight then if that is accomplished 2)trying to lose weight.
My ultimate goal is 1)lose 10 lbs 2)lose 15 lbs 3)lose 20 lbs :S all by Sept 3rd

I know the goals get pretty steep but Im hoping between this site-the competition with my boyfriend lol-and the fact that I want to look good back at school-that somewhere in there I will find the motivation to at least hit my second goal! :)

wow! well this is the place to be! The countdown has begun... I just got back to the states and I have exactly 3 weeks til classes. I got weighed at the Doc's today. 134!!!! i've lost about 11 lbs since the beginning of june. My goal is another 9 (eek!) by Aug 20th. It'll be rough, but impossible? maybe not!

So we all have the desire, but when it comes to making it a reality (and so quickly for most of us) we HAVE to have goals. long term, mid term and short term. What are YOUR goals?? say them. write them down!! share with us! and we can help each other out.

i want to by saturday: eat healthy no excuses thru sat and then MAYBE i can booze abit saturday night. MAYBE
do the fitness mag. exercise routine TWICE
plus
100 pushups
250 squats
250 situps

Are any of you taking classes right now (summer quarter)? I usually try to take the summer off to reset my body but I had to retake calculus. Go figure. I've hit my 6th-week-of-the-quarter-freak-out (normal for me) when I start wigging out about my classes which leads to STRESS EATING.

Does anyone have some tips for me? When I don't get enough sleep and I am barely keeping my head above water because I'm spread so thin, I overeat - especially carbs - to compensate.

I would really like to be close to goal by the start of fall quarter. Sept. 30 here.

So I decided that my first week (last week) I would concentrate on eating healthfully. This week I am now going to try to work on fitting in some work outs-slowly at first but Im hoping to work in at least two a major break through considering I work over 60 hours a week and will have to get up at 6am to do so :S but Im hoping this will help me shed the unwanted poundage-unfortunatly I tried to do it today and decided that hitting the snooze button was all I could handle lol so we will see how tomorrow goes (fingers crossed that I find something motivating-how do you guys find motivation to get your workouts in???)

I really would love to lose 5 or 10 pounds by the end of August. I am going to be a senior this year (finally) and I hope to be engaged at some point in the year, and I want to get a head start on being able to be healthy and find a gorgeous wedding dress. So I figure 5-10 pounds is a good motivator. Totally interested.

Hey guys, I just found this topic and I'm totally interested in slimming down for the fall semester! Its hard for me to get motivated, especially when my family has junk food in the house. Its hard for me to watch them eat it and not indulge haha but I've been trying to get into better shape and lose some weight that i put on when i got to college. I'm going into my senior year so its long overdue to get back to being healthy!

Thanks for the welcome GIRVIN098!

Well the weigh in went well but the weekend went awful!!!! maybe its because I was way too strict during the week...ok I lost 6 lbs but that is only because i just finished my timeofthemonth so that had a little something to do with the weight. I just need to learn to deal with the lack of structure and more temptations around :( hopefully this weekend didnt out do everything that I did last week but I guess I will just try to get back on track and keep on trucking on with my goal

I'm trying to lose a little bit too before I go back to class on Aug 24th. But it's incredibly hard for me. I wish I had found this site ages ago! Anyways, I have a family vacation to Georgia in mid-Aug. and I'm so nervous, because I know my family would want to try all that Southern cooking. And I won't have access to a computer!!!! AHHH!

I need all the support I can get. I'm going to try and just taste things - and not eat the entire thing. Wish me luck!

Mandabeth, I think you'll be able to either achieve or get very close to your goal if you stick with it.

Good luck!

I'm envious of all you whose schools start later. I feel like Purdue starts early and gets out late. (I just need a little more summer!)

Hey guys,

I just found this group, but you all seem so supportive. I was in an accident at the end of last quarter, and ended up gaining weight between being unable to exercise for a couple weeks and getting stressed with finals and giving up watching what I ate. By the time I moved home for the summer, I was 175 lbs--the highest I've ever been. I've been working on increasing exercise and eating healthily, and the weight's beginning to come off. I'm so excited--I want to get to at most 155 lbs (healthy bmi for my height) when I move back to school on 8/31.

Welcome Fufillingmygoal!
10 pounds in 6 weeks is totally doable, and once you put your mind to it. I know what you mean by putting it off. The hard part of that is the thought that "If I had only put in the effort earlier, I'd be there by now..." So the best thing to do is to jump on it and don't look back. Losing 15 pounds your freshman year is great! You surely know what to do by now, it's just a question of application. Good luck, and we'll be here to support you.

I haven't gotten on the scale for a few days, but I will tomorrow. Ran 11 miles today (woo!) and am looking forward to strength training tomorrow, mostly because it isn't running! :P It's supposed to be around 97 degrees F here for the next few days which means I'll be getting up early to run (that's what I have been doing, and it sets the tone for my entire day, I love it!). Looking forward to seeing some progress on the scale tomorrow, but even if I don't persay, I'm beginning to see some positive results from my strength routine. :)

Hi I was just going throught this team and noticed this topic and I am totally interested in joining you guys-you are all so supportive of one another and I need a little motivation. I am looking to lose 10lbs by the time i head back to school. I have been attempting to all summer but i keep putting it off but with about 6 weeks left I realized that I need to kick it into gear. I went to school and my freshman year I actually LOST 15lbs lol but since then over the next two years have put that back on so I am looking to get back to that weight...10lbs to go and am looking so forward to feeling that good again!

Hey Polkadot
Your situation might not be as bad as it seems...it is oftentimes the case that when we lose weight more slowly, it's easier to keep it off, so with that in mind, keep up the patient effort, and it will pay off. With your family situation, they might benefit from seeing your progress, and adopt some healthy habits themselves. Even if they don't, learning how to deal with excess meals and food, which you are doing, is probably doing a great job of teaching you habits that will carry over when you are faced with the all you can eat environment of college cafeterias. Just remember that once you are there, it's ENTIRELY in your hands, so make the most of it. There are plenty of foods out there that are good for us and still taste good.
I'm not sure how my college is going to be, I'm a transfer starting in the fall. (It's pretty intimidating for me, I'm planning to major in Dietics and Nutrition- I'd better be good, lest I seem like a hypocrite. emoticon
Keep up the good work. The fact that you have done well and lost weight in your current situation shows tremendous strength.

I was trying to get down to 140 by August 21, but with just a month left, I think 145 is more likely.

Eating correctly is so hard for me. My house is full of junk food and I have no self control. It takes so much effort to even stay below 1700 calories. (My whole family is overweight, so any meals in my house are far from nutritious).

My weight loss has been SO slow since I eat so much. I exercise quite a bit, but most of it goes to waste since it's just making up for the excess calories I eat.

While my food situation at home is not quite ideal, I'm scared for school. Purdue all-you-can-eat buffets are TERRIBLE for anyone try to watch their weight. I'm hoping I can do it.

Are your colleges good about serving healthy food?

Got on the scale today and it showed 136.5. Yay! The 137 barrier always seemed the hardest to crack. I've been upping the cals to about 1300-1400 and so far in tandem with the running, it has shown to be a good strategy. I also have decided to race another 10k on August 15th. Hope I can make it in under 52:58, which was my last 10k time.

Okay, pre-weekend sum-up.
I am ready to get through this weekend strong. I have now totally recovered from last weekend's blow-out in terms of numbers, but I am ready to see the numbers go down more. I am going away and won't have internet till sunday, but will manually keep track of everything to enter later on. Today I tried on a few pairs of my "skinny jeans" and I can tell that in a few more weeks, if all goes well, I'll be wearing them as my normal ones! :D
All the best, be strong MYMAYGON. Have fun, dance away, and if anyone asks why you aren't drinking, say you're saving money. Worked for me.
Good luck!

gosh... its weird to think back to when i was running like that... now i'm barely running at all! i'm DYING to get into a weight room. you don't see anything faster than weight lifting. man. two weeks and you are fine! (if i can get rid of the fat first...!) so lose the fat now and tone up when i get home... prolly another 3-4 weeks till i get in a gym tho... :( arrrgh.

anyway... i THINK i have seen some more size loss!
beginning~now~lost for right leg
23.5"~22.25"~1.25"

so 1.25" from my legs... its actually farely noticeable and SOOO motivating... at least at the moment. but they're not TONED dangit. i'm trying but its slow. okay okay, under 22.0" by sunday!!! thats the plan!

happy thursday

It certainly does seem like weekends are the bane of a healthy lifestyle. My issue with them is the lack of structure.
So this week is my cutback week for running. It will be 6 miles tomorrow, 5 miles and strength training thursday, then another 6 on friday, then saturday will be another 5, then strength on sunday.
Here's to progress!

wooo girl. keep up those 10 milers!

i'm sure we all agree. weekends SUCK for dieting

i haven't seen any size loss in a while. still at 23.5"

most importantly... other than running 5.5 miles randomly on sunday my exercise has been SLACKING along with my diet habits. now i'm kicking BOTH into shape (TEN DAYS TILL I GO HOME AND MOMENT OF TRUTH 130 130 130!!)

exercise goals this week:
300 no weight squats (-65) :)
350 sit ups (-55) :)
150 push ups

by end of day saturday.
plus twice more thru the other "workout plan"

Go!

Hey,
I had a really rough weekend. I didn't track food at all. Didn't want to think about it. Totally ravaged by those dreaded TOM cravings. But I am optimistic about the rest of the week. I have decided to up my cals to around 1300-1400, just in case I've been trying to cut too much food in conjunction with running. So, after a week, I'll check and see how it goes. :) I too need to keep vigilant with the diet.
But I ran another 10 miler this morning (I didn't get to it this weekend) so I'm feeling fantastic about that.
Best of luck to all

hi all. how was the weekend? mine wrecked me something fierce and i've been really pissy about it all day... :( but otherwise today was good. for some reason i feel completely demolished by the weekend, (it wasn't THAT freaking bad jeeze) but i know i just need to get over it.
i'm still at 23.5" and still looking to hit the beautiful 22.0" by next saturday. I think i can do it!!

i need to really REALLY crack down on my diet tho. i think thats why i feel so upset. I really truly thought i was gonna be awesome and in control then ended up letting myself down. buck up girl!!! life will freaking go on and NO MATTER WHAT at the moment i am still a delovely WHOLE INCH SMALLER in my legs than when i got here.... now thats something to keep working for. progress progress.

peace till tomorrow

Hey everyone. I'm back and sparked my food from yesterday, and all looks good so far. But tomorrow's scale is the true test. I started my TOM yesterday, so I guess I can't be too disappointed if there's a bit of ballooning going on. I'm heading into the weekend feeling pretty good thus far, so knock on wood and here's to hoping I can stay the course. MYMAYGON- sounds like your motivation is sky-high!
I give you major kudos for surviving the Master Clense...I would give it a shot, but I don't think I could stick with it OR that my dad (who I live and eat meals with) would let me. :P I know, I'm old enough to make that call, but I think more than anything it's the, well, no food aspect that would get to me after a while.
Hope that today is going well for you. I'm off to run soon, but I hope that everything is well with everyone!

okay so i just finished the master cleanse, which for me was awesome cause it was super easy to follow. don't eat anything...! but tomorrow starts the true test. Needing to be in strict control of what i eat so i can drop the next 6 pounds super fast.

Tomorrows menu: orange juice bfast and lunch (to break the fast slowly) and soup for dinner.

*if i absolutely can't make it home for dinner. something CRAZY LIGHT. no dairy! about 200~300 cals.

Happy day all! Weekend time! Anybody want to pose a personal challenge?!?! lets hear it!

good luck with the travels!!! i know, weekends can be rooooough.

i saw 22.5" today. YAY! that should be about 135 lbs for me. :) its TOM for me either tomorrow or saturday or so so i see myself bloating up a bit this weekend :P can't let that be a discouragement!

today i got up early and did my "weight" routine AND ran cause i skipped the weights yesterday so I am still sticking with my 3 weights and 3 cardio work out per week. thats my personal goal!

happy thursday all!

Hey guys.
Well, the scale showed 137 today, which is gratifying to see, and a solid reminder that those fluxs in numbers are nothing to fret over. I'm going to be on the road today and tomorrow- got my good breakfast in and packing snacks (healthy!) for the trip. We'll be doing a lot of restaurant eating so hopefully I can keep strong! Today's run went well, though it was a real killer to actually do. Did strength too. I was looking at myself the other day and I'm thinking I need to take up pilates again to fight the tummy roundness that comes from poor posture. I'm a total culprit of slouching, but pilates always helped me improve that.
Gotta go! Best of luck!

okay, to put a tangible goal with my ideas:

i fly home on Sat July 25th, i left 145 lbs. I'm shooting for *****130lbs**** thats the dream (so i THINK thats like 22.0" right leg). but would be 'happy' with a solid 133/134. as in, not a random low cause i didn't eat or something, but a solid 133/134. or about 22.25/22.3"

the second DREAM is 20 POUNDS LIGHTER WHEN I START JUNIOR YEAR
I turned TWENTY in june. we start school on aug TWENTIETH and so i think its a sign i should be TWENTY beautiful lbs lighter than when i left. omigosh. that would be BRILLIANT. then my actual GOAL weight is about 122 and i think 9/11 is the date that i set for that.

BW:145lb
GW:122 lbs

CW: July 8 - 137
GW1: July 25 - 130
GW2: Aug 20 - 125
GW3: Sept 11 - 122

I realize the first goal will probably be the hardest. its not unrealistic just hard. Thats why i'm going to start the '21 day bust a rut! next week.
whew. yup yup. thats the dream. after 1.5 years of yo yo after yo yo i think i'm finally doing it. THAT is motivation.
Love girls! happy wednesday!

Hey guys.
Well I weighed in at about 138.5 today. Which puts me in the same 138-137 rut that I have been in for what seems like forever. I know it's just a number, but when you're doing everything right (seemingly) it can be really frustrating not to see progress. Ah well. I'm hoping to see improvement along the way here soon.
As for eating, I tend to choose well. I guess what you all mean by "clean" is food that is processed as minimally as possible. I pretty much stick to that out of habit; food like oatmeal, skim dairy, fruit, veggies (carrots mostly), and string cheese, as well as whole wheat bread and lean meats like turkey for sandwiches. My only real indulgences are those dove dark chocolate squares (two a day max, and they're only 42 calories each), and the occasional diet soda (I know, I know). I drink plenty of water (in the form of tea mostly) So, eh, I guess I just have to control the occasional binges. Right now I'm in a cautionary zone because I know that I tend to just let go when I am frustrated at the sign of no progress. Counterproductive, you bet. But somehow it happens.
Oh, BETHMW25, I think it's great that you're going to college in England for next year. I was there for this past year, and it's an experience to be sure- just watch out for those fish and chips! :P
MYMAYGON- I'm with you on this one, we can do it! (I just realized how close we are number-wise, both currently and goalwise.) I look forward to emapthizing with you here on our quest to stick to the line. :)

Beth - yes. its about learning to cook for your self and doing it. thats a life style change! last year i made a lifestyle change for the worst when i started gorging myself on junk food. i have never done that before in my life, but i changed my ways and now after a year its like omg how will i ever stop?

but it will stop. I am here to lose weight yes but i'm all out serious about the sticking with it. i don't plan on going back to chips and fast food whatsoever when my goal weight is met.

i used to eat half clean, i want to go almost completely clean. thats my goal.
i also want to be between 120-125 pounds
and i plan to weight lift regularly... maybe a fitness comp? ;) :P thats a LONG way away, but i can have it on my list right?

what about you guys, i think having goals here... both far away and monthly and weekly will help us get structure and the ball rolling instead of just talkin. I've posted more than enough but i'll be back later with more of mine

peace!

Girvin - girl i have BEEN there. literally. man I think i ate my face off sometimes last year. oi, it was a rough one for me. but you know, when you are training for a half its soooo okay to be taking in over 2000 cals ESPECIALLY on 10 mile days and still see weight loss BUT you have to make it healthy. so on days you know you r running the whole 10, just be nice to yourself from the get go and make up some big wheat spaghetti and enjoy it with some tomatoes and go run. you're body will love you for it. but i've been there... and am there... and its so much easier said than done.

i for one am always thinking "as little food as i can, as little as little for as long as i can" then i binge HUGE! so that is EXACTLY the thing i'm trying to stop right this very moment.

I'm finishin up day 8 :) day 8 since a binge, since chips, chocolate, fast food and soda. i'm going for 21 before i celebrate. then celebrating smart. this 21 days are my conversion to a clean eating junior year and LIFE. I used to be sooooooo much healthier than i was last year.

last - year - was - ugly, but it can and will be overcome, right here right now.

I gained the freshman 15 in my old college because I absolutely hated it there. I lost it by the end of the year from going to the gym, which I had never done before. Now I'm trying to go a bit lower because I'm going to a new college in England!! I want to make sure I look good but also I need to make sure I can make healthy food by myself. Apparently the best weight for my height is 117, so that's where I'm going. I do Turbo Jam every week day and I bike on Saturdays. I stick to the Spark plan goals for eating, but I'm not sure if I should lower it or something, since sometimes its hard for me to squeeze in enough calories and carbs.

Haven't weighed in yet, but tomorrow I will! Had a good run today. As for meals, I tend to stick to about 1300-1400 calories spread between three meals and two snacks. It worked for me before, and I'm hoping it will again. My problem is weekends. For some reason, their lack of structure tends to lead to my eating falling apart (i.e. binging). But last weekend was pretty good actually. I just kept busy. Saturday was the only day I went over really, but I ran 10 miles that day. I know that doesn't validate it, but at least the calories in were somewhat compensated for. :P See you all tomorrow!

this meal plan severely hinders calories and may lead to very slight tonage and muscle loss. it is highly recommended to lower the amount and intensity of exercise while on this plan to light weight reps and easy cardio.

This is not a 3 weeks for the faint at heart but if you want to go healthy the right way, this is it! I reeeally recommend this for people who want to change their whole lifestyle on top of losing weight because the clean eating ideas are alllll there. but you have to want the mental change right along with the physical. it lasts longer that way. i know III want that. thats why i can't wait to start.

Clean eating means almost no processed foods. the more processed, or the more its touched by men, the worse it gets for you. its built on fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains and lean meats. its imo the best way to go

i've tried this before but then started training for a half marathon and had to up my cals. I also used to be really really compulsive and binged alot. it is a problem i am currently battling to overcome. let me know all questions!

How is progress ladies?

I haven't seen anymore size loss but I haven't gained any either :)

also folksies. I'm planning on starting Oxygen's "Bust your rut" (Oxygen is a women's fitness mag, imo, the best out there) on Monday the 13th. The plan was in an issue way back at the beginning of the year. Its all clean eating, which i strongly recommend and am trying to adopt myself.

anyway, its 21 days and claims to make you lose 10 lbs. I started it once earlier this year and... its pretty dang effective. The catch? you eat the same thing all week, for 3 weeks. so 3 total different meal plans. if you want to know more about it just say so and i'll gab more!

welllll when i first got to Europe it wasn't pretty. I mixed their love of bread cheese and butter morning and afternoon with american love for big meals and chips in the evenings. Its not easy, but I'm taming myself. I loonnnng for Thai and big meaty dishes and sandwiches and everything else everytime i walk by... but then i keep going and one hour later i don't regret it. Eventually I hope to not have those temptations anymore!

Right now I am trying to run 3 times a week (pretty short) and i do a "no-maschine" routine in my room also 3 times a week.

GIRVIN - GOOD LUCK WITH THE HALF. I ran my first one in april :). Its hard to slim down while training so vigorlously tho. Be careful and smart! a lot of healthy healthy calories will go way farther than barely any unhealthy ones!

I'm with you guys. I'm at about 138 and am looking to see the 120's by the time I start school in late September.
What are you all looking to do in terms of exercise? (I'm training for a 1/2 marathon in August.)

I avoided the frosh 15 only to put it all on last year as a sophomore. I've spent half the summer starting to slim down. Now i'm trying to keep dropping fat but slowing start lifting and toning up. What are you doing? What are your goals

I am currently in Europe and don't have a scale but I do have a tape measure.
Starting right leg measurement: 23.5"
current: 22.75"
total loss: 0.75"

I was 145 pounds when I left June 1st, when I start school halfway through August i'd like to be under 130! My guess is I'm about 138 right now. That means a tiny bit over a pound a week! I can do that! Who's with me??
