I definitely understand where everyone's coming as far as intimidation goes with the school gym. I always find myself feeling very self conscious when it comes to core/strength training workouts because I'm afraid of not doing something right when everyone else seems to have such a set plan. But, all in all, I feel great when I go, and it helps seeing friends/ familiar faces. I usually use it for motivation in pushing myself that much harder.

I thought I was the only one feeling this way!! I felt everyone was staring at me! And it seems like it was only skinny fit people working out @ my gym, in skimpy outfits, and even managing to look good sweating (yes it is possible, believe me!!) Will definitely go back soon (maybe tmrw). Maybe one day I can be one of those fit people working out and sweating while still looking good.

The gym can feel intimidating at first, but I've found that when you start going regularly it's much more comfortable. It's hard to fit time to workout during my busy schedule with classes, exams, meeting, etc but this semester I'm going to schedule time to go to my school's gym regularly just like another class.

Yes! Thanks for posting! I find the gym quite intimidating! I do not know why. For me I think it is more mental than anything. I make up so many excuses for myself. I know that the benefits outweight the risks but have not been able to make it a habit!!! It is difficult but not impossible to pencil in a workout into my schedule. School full time , work almost full time..english major...i have to stop making excuses for myself. I will schedule a workout into my hectic schedule =)

To say the gym isn't intimidating wouldn't be fair. However, don't let that stop you from going. I felt like that at first, and the first few times were a bit awkward. I felt like everyone was staring at me. After a while though, you just feel like a regular. People stop caring, they only look at me now after I've just kicked butt on the elliptical and I'm drenched in sweat...and I don't mind that! If someone would seriously judge you negatively for going to the gym where you're trying to get healthy, they are in no way, shape, or form worth taking seriously at all. Ignore them, and work out for yourself ya know?

i find it so hard to work out in my school gym. Maybe that's why i'm so overweight. everyone in there looks so fit and healthy. i'd stick out like a sore thumb.

I know this isn't exactly a gym message, but close. I was psyched to learn that my school offers the gym to students free and we have access to personal trainers and nutritionists. We can only use the services of these people so often, but it is helpful and motivating none-the-less. I'm just curious to know if anyone else has checked into services such as these at their school, or my own: IPFW in Ft Wayne, IN.

I haven't been to my school's gym since last semester. It had 4 crappy ellipticals and 3 working tredmills. When I went back last week I found that ALL of the elliptcals were gone and onl 2 tredmills remain. In their place were new weight lifting equiptment. Luckily the fitness center at my apt has an elliptical or I would have never gotten back on track!

It's about a 20 minute walk to campus from my apartment. I have really been enjoying leaving early for class and sneaking my cardio in that way! The best part is, it doesn't seem like a chore because I am walking to get somewhere. Sometimes I bike, but there is a steep hill and it's pretty embarrassing to struggle up it. Eventually I will pedal up the hill without stopping! On a side note, I LOVE my exercise ball. everybody should get one!

I loveee working out at the gym, because every time I go I can workout different muscles. The machines I alternate between are the bike, elliptical, treadmill, and the dreaded Stairmaster.

The gym on my campus is free, whiich is great, but it closes way early on Friday and is closed completely on the weekends. I hate it, I muster up all that gumption to actually go , and then its closed. I hope once fall semester begins that will change. I love to work out!

I'm not sure if I'm going to make it to the gym today, but if I am unable to go to gym I am going to work out around the house.

I struggled with the same situation you just described. I am training for a marathon and I find that I have to force myself to eat sometimes even if I'm not hungry; I know this is hard because when you think of losing weight, you think of less food. If you space out 5-6 meals a day, eating every 3 hours or so, you'll never be hungry. When you're not hungry you are more inclined to eat healthy, avoid cravings, and not over do it.
Also, not eating enough slows down your metabolism. Not getting enough calories puts your body into starvation mode, where the metabolism slows down and your body will use most as your calories to store (as fat) instead of burn.
I'd reccomend doing strength training and cardio on different days, or at least making sure you don't do more than 40 minutes (including warm up and cool down) of cardio on a day when you strength train. Doing More than 40 can actually break down the muscle you're trying to build.

the gym is great for working out with family or friends but I find that I can do more and burn more calories when I workout at home because it's hard to do circuit trainings in the gym because there are other people who use the machines and it's hard to do the routines accordingly.

i try to go to the gym at least 3 times a week to do strength training and cardio. By the end of the week though my cardio minutes and calories burned are usually a lot higher than the ones in my fitness plan. myFitness tells me I should be eating more to account for the calories burned but does anyone know how much more I should be eating? it doesn't automatically change in the nutrition plan and I don't want to get into the habit of "oh I can eat this because I'm going to work out later"

What do you guys think about strength training? How long do you think it will take to show signs of muscle growth? I've only been doing strength training for two weeks but I want to know when all this soreness will pay off. I'm excited for summer sexy arms!

If you have a cable box, there are some GREAT On Demand workouts for free under the sports and entertainment section. Anything from kickboxing to yoga, they're quick routines to do in your room if you don't have time to hit the gym! And did I mention they were free? :)
