I just think about it this way - when I'm working out, I'm not focused on others, I'm focused on my form and engaging the proper muscles. Others are typically doing the same, and if they are looking at you, they're probably caught up in comparing themselves to everyone else! They're not worth your worry or time. Just get your workout in, and you'll feel great about your hard work during and after... at least, that's the way I see it :)

Just take five minutes to regroup, and don't ever forget to make time for what makes you happy.

Yea, people watching can suck for a workout. Turning your music up helps a bit.

You are so right!!! I just started going to the gym at my college, and I always feel like people are staring at me. Everyday I second guess myself, wondering if I should go or not to spare myself the embarrassment. But then I realize... WHO CARES!? I'm there to work out and lose the weight I desperately need to lose. After reading this post, I feel even better about going to the gym. Thanks for the boost!!!! If people stare at me, Ill just give em' a wink and a smile.

If you like dancing and going to workout classes, then you should try zumba! Its soo much fun! I do it and want to keep going even after the hour is over. I would say make sure that you have a teacher that has fun dance routines but will also work you. How good it is and how many calories you burn definitely depends on the teacher/dance moves. Try it out...you will love it :)

My suggestion is to look at the price of membership and where the gym is in consideration to you home or place of work. To me the gym has to be close or else I'll never get the motivation to drive far to work out for an hour or so. The water thing is a tuff decision but totally up to you if you can go with out water during your workout or only drink when changing machines/areas.
Good luck!

So this seems like a good place for this. haha.
I have a question. So Im about to join a gym and there are two I am thinking about. They are Planet Fitness and Diamond Fitness 24/7 (which was Metro 25/7). I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts about either one. And one of Planet Fitness's rules is "no water is permitted on the work out areas." And that is crazy and kinda a deal breaker for me. So any comments would be great.
Thanks =)

I guess most of you live in dorms and I remembered how much that used to be inconvenient but I had a room of my own in a dorm. I mainly workout at home I have a whole bunch of videos I downloaded a while ago. But now I just realized I am SO OUT OF SHAPE I can not even get through 20 mins of circuit training without dying grrrrr

Because of my class schedule I usually just jump on a treadmill/ elliptical. I might pick up a class every now and then if I have time but usually its treadmill/ strength training on my own.

what do you guys think as far as fitness classes vs. machine work outs? I always struggle with choosing between going to classes (like zumba or full body toning) and just going on the elliptical or treadmill. I like classes because I feel like I'm trying to keep up with the instructor so I get a good workout, but I like the ease of knowing how many calories I have burned on the machine. What are your preferences? emoticon or emoticon

JFECKERS- You should so go! I went after my last class yesterday even though I was exhausted (it ends at 6:30 and I was up since 5) but I went and when I was done I was super energized and got everything done that night with time spare :)

I know how you feel...I haven't made it to the gym at school yet either. Although sometimes it can be a motivator I get kinda down about myself at the same time! Soooo proud of you for going, am seriously considering going after class tonight thanks to you! Keep up the great work! :)

I finally made it to my school's gym, it took me 3 semesters but at least I made it. I'm still extremely uncomfortable working out in front of super in shape athletes (we have an Olympic program at my school) but I'm trying.

I just got a bunch of new workout clothes yesterday from my mother-in-law! I have never actually had much of anything to work out in so I was really happy to get them. Can't wait to put them into use! Starting as soon as I get up tomorrow!

I did walk for 10 minutes tonight. Nothing spectacular, just walking home from work.

I'm new to this team! The last two days I've done 60 minutes on the elliptical to get moving and sweat a little bit! I'm kind of intimidated to try any fitness classes at my gym, does anyone have any suggestions on their favourites or what got them started with fitness classes?

Still moving to my new apartment and they have a gym. Thank God. I have to pay a 25 fee that I get back when I move but I super excited as for my home stair stepper just broke on me. For now I am going to have to get creative with my cardio until I get that gym key.

As ghetto as my gym is, I love it! I have been to enough body sculpt/pump classes that when I go to the gym now at a time there isn't a class I have the routines memorized. I've been there just jammin out to my music and lifting hand weights and people have actually come in and done my routine with me! I LOVE it!

I used to think the gym was REALLY intimidating so the first couple of times I went, I stuck to the elliptical. Eventually though I explored a bit (still do...I try new machines out all the time), and I love it. Being there all the time (becoming a "regular" even if I didn't do much) helped, but what helped me the most, in terms of feeling less intimidated by the gym and all the areas I wasn't exploring, I think was having all the right gear. Equipped with underarmour, a pair of weight lifting gloves, and an arm-band to hold my ipod I felt SO much more comfortable venturing into parts of the gym where I felt like everyone else looked like a pro (as opposed to me, still trying to get a feel for the place).

Now I'm addicted to buying new workout gear. Its SO much fun going into the different stores in my area and picking out new dry-fit tees, hand-weights, funky colored KT tape (medical tape that works GREAT on my Runner's Knee - I just bought a roll in hot pink ;D), etc.

@haveapeppermint I know what you mean. Like even though I was jogging outside and I know others do too. Man I would be sweating like that but I burned some serious cals so it was worth it. I don't realize how sweaty I am until I get home to take my shower after the jog.

i always get a little self-conscious whenever i had a good, hard workout at the gym and i'm sweating like crazy to the point where, you know, there are those dark sweaty areas on your t-shirt around your neck, underarms, and back, and i look around and there's all these people just glistening and not drenched like i am. at the same time, though, i feel great after those workouts and i just think to myself,

"you know what? you might be the biggest person in here, but you're working hard and staying committed to getting healthier. if someone can't respect that, f*** them." :)

@comingbackhome I can work out inside but when I did run outside. I stuck to that exercise for 3 months straight. The only time I ever did that too. Lately there has been loose dogs in my area so yeahhhh. Gonna exercise inside for the time being. I also realized working out during my 30 minute lunches at work, worked great for me. Did that for two weeks. I am about to get back to that so I can start to feel the burn.

What works the best for me is just working out outside--ice skating, snowboarding, hiking, biking--anything that gets me outside. I can't really get motivated working out inside a gym for some reason.

I go to Northeastern and our gym has something called "group fitness," where you pay $50/semester and you can do one class/day. The good thing about this is you sign up for the class the day before and if you don't go, they will send an angry email (i know from experience) so that's definitely extra motivation to go to the class haha

I found a couple of things helpful when it comes to the University Gym. #1 Find a workout buddy - if you find someone who has the same goals as you be accountable for each other and motivate each other!

#2 - Be fearless! Don't be afraid to try new machines. I see so many people go into the gym and not touch the machines that no one uses. It's ok to ask someone how to use it...no one was born with the knowledge of gym equipment, everyone had to learn at somepoint. If you absolutely terrified go look it up on the internet and give it a go next time!

#3- It's ok if people stare. At my gym the weight section is crawling with huge guys all looking at THEMSELVES in the mirror. Most of the time they are so self conscious of what you are going to think about them. Most of the time a nice ten foot radius begins to clear around me when I lift my 8 lb weights...just because I have confidence, I look like I know what I'm doing, and I'm there to work...not to flirt.

I'm thinking about joining the Curves down the street. I have a lot of "at home" gym equipment (exercycle, treadmille, swiss ball, dumbbells, exercise videos) but I never do things by myself very well. I'm hoping that I'll find a buddy there.

I am definitely going to take advantage of the gym this semester. I find that going to the gym is good for my motivation because I often see people working out harder than I am even though they don't appear to be that much more physically fit than I am so it can definitely give me encouragement to work out harder. It also gives me a lot more options for working out than I would have in my apartment. To keep from getting bored I always bring my iPod and either listen to music or an audiobook.

I thought going to the gym would be hard for me. I figured I'd get intimidated or something, too. But when I showed up on the first day I realized that I absolutely loved it. If people were looking at me funny, I didn't even notice it. I guess I was just THAT into my workout. If I'd known that I would love the gym so much, I would've gotten my dad to get a family membership to the gym back home. (Of course, the good thing about the campus gym is IT'S FREE!)

My freshman year I went to the gym everyday, and eventually worked out at least twice a day. The problem is I always seem to bulk up. Now I try to do more cardio and so far my favorite is the elliptical but its hard for me to stay on a treadmill or bike because I lose interest quickly! I don't like yoga or pilates much either, I've always been more of a weights kinda gal!
My struggle is choosing what exercises I do more wisely and being consistent to get the results I want!

I refused to start going to the gym for the first semester of school because of the intimidation factor. I only changed my mind because I found out about my schools group exercise program. You pay $45 a semester and you can take as many group exercise classes as you want. The classes run all day from 7am to 10pm. I knew I would work out if I had other people doing it too, so I started going. I LOVE IT!! You guys should see if your school has something like that.

Even with this, I still get a little intimidated. For a while, the triathlon club was working out at the same time as one of my classes. I just pretended I didn't see them. I just have to keep in mind how good I feel during and after class.

Thankfully right now I've joined a 24/7 gym so I just got around 9 PM at night and work out for an hour and barely anyone is there so its less intimidating and I feel by the end of the summer I'll be more pleased with myself working out so it won't be so bad going to the gym at school. The only bad thing about going to the gym at campus is its either a 30 minute walk, or a 10 minute bus ride, then a 15 minute walk just to get there and by the time I get there I'm always in less of a mood to work out cause I know its the same thing when I leave to go back home. It's like a double work out

I swim everyday using the school's pool. THAT was nerve-wrecking, but I got over my fears real quick because I knew if I didn't I would never reach my goal. So I got out there and swam with the athletes. Good Lord that was hard! LOL. Because you see all of these hard, fit bodies and then there was me, the fat one trying to swim. Yes, I got a lot of looks because for 1) I didn't swim very well and they were all doing lap after lap of freestyle, butterfly and backstroke. 2) well... because I was the big-boned one. But ya know, whatever! I go everyday and it's been almost 4mths now. I just go in the mornings now when there's fewer people. Since I'm a regular now, no one even pays attention to me. So it's just getting over that initial hump.

I've been working out at home this past week, and I definitely enjoyed it, but I'm heading back to the dorms after spring break today. So starting tomorrow, most of my workout will be in the gym. I'm so ready

I used to be embarassed at the gym, but I figured out the key: I no longer go when our volleyball and baseball teams are in there. lol

I find it really hard to go to the gym because I feel like everyone is staring at me. It is scary especially if you are like fifty pounds overweight. I am pushing through it though. My health is way too important to care what THEY think.

Intimidating gym.
It can be very intimidating. I just crank up the music, and get it over with. When I go to the gym, I happen to people watch. It is interesting to see how others work out. I mean, you can learn how to operate a machine. (I still haven't figured out how to work the rowing machine yet)....

I haven't been going to the gym. BUT. (yes there is a but). . . . . . I have been walking. It isn't as beneficial calorie wise since the gym includes a treadmill on incline. It works for now. Eventually, I will make my way to the gym. I don't really have a choice. The heat will drive me to the gym. lol.

I definitely understand where everyone's coming as far as intimidation goes with the school gym. I always find myself feeling very self conscious when it comes to core/strength training workouts because I'm afraid of not doing something right when everyone else seems to have such a set plan. But, all in all, I feel great when I go, and it helps seeing friends/ familiar faces. I usually use it for motivation in pushing myself that much harder.

I thought I was the only one feeling this way!! I felt everyone was staring at me! And it seems like it was only skinny fit people working out @ my gym, in skimpy outfits, and even managing to look good sweating (yes it is possible, believe me!!)
Will definitely go back soon (maybe tmrw). Maybe one day I can be one of those fit people working out and sweating while still looking good. emoticon

The gym can feel intimidating at first, but I've found that when you start going regularly it's much more comfortable. It's hard to fit time to workout during my busy schedule with classes, exams, meeting, etc but this semester I'm going to schedule time to go to my school's gym regularly just like another class.

Yes! Thanks for posting! I find the gym quite intimidating! I do not know why. For me I think it is more mental than anything. I make up so many excuses for myself. I know that the benefits outweight the risks but have not been able to make it a habit!!! It is difficult but not impossible to pencil in a workout into my schedule. School full time , work almost full time..english major...i have to stop making excuses for myself. I will schedule a workout into my hectic schedule =)

To say the gym isn't intimidating wouldn't be fair. However, don't let that stop you from going. I felt like that at first, and the first few times were a bit awkward. I felt like everyone was staring at me. After a while though, you just feel like a regular. People stop caring, they only look at me now after I've just kicked butt on the elliptical and I'm drenched in sweat...and I don't mind that!
If someone would seriously judge you negatively for going to the gym where you're trying to get healthy, they are in no way, shape, or form worth taking seriously at all. Ignore them, and work out for yourself ya know?

I know this isn't exactly a gym message, but close.
I was psyched to learn that my school offers the gym to students free and we have access to personal trainers and nutritionists. We can only use the services of these people so often, but it is helpful and motivating none-the-less. I'm just curious to know if anyone else has checked into services such as these at their school, or my own: IPFW in Ft Wayne, IN.

I haven't been to my school's gym since last semester. It had 4 crappy ellipticals and 3 working tredmills. When I went back last week I found that ALL of the elliptcals were gone and onl 2 tredmills remain. In their place were new weight lifting equiptment. Luckily the fitness center at my apt has an elliptical or I would have never gotten back on track!

It's about a 20 minute walk to campus from my apartment. I have really been enjoying leaving early for class and sneaking my cardio in that way! The best part is, it doesn't seem like a chore because I am walking to get somewhere. Sometimes I bike, but there is a steep hill and it's pretty embarrassing to struggle up it. Eventually I will pedal up the hill without stopping!
On a side note, I LOVE my exercise ball. everybody should get one!

I loveee working out at the gym, because every time I go I can workout different muscles. The machines I alternate between are the bike, elliptical, treadmill, and the dreaded Stairmaster.

The gym on my campus is free, whiich is great, but it closes way early on Friday and is closed completely on the weekends. I hate it, I muster up all that gumption to actually go , and then its closed. I hope once fall semester begins that will change. I love to work out!

I struggled with the same situation you just described. I am training for a marathon and I find that I have to force myself to eat sometimes even if I'm not hungry; I know this is hard because when you think of losing weight, you think of less food. If you space out 5-6 meals a day, eating every 3 hours or so, you'll never be hungry. When you're not hungry you are more inclined to eat healthy, avoid cravings, and not over do it.

Also, not eating enough slows down your metabolism. Not getting enough calories puts your body into starvation mode, where the metabolism slows down and your body will use most as your calories to store (as fat) instead of burn.

I'd reccomend doing strength training and cardio on different days, or at least making sure you don't do more than 40 minutes (including warm up and cool down) of cardio on a day when you strength train. Doing More than 40 can actually break down the muscle you're trying to build.

the gym is great for working out with family or friends but I find that I can do more and burn more calories when I workout at home because it's hard to do circuit trainings in the gym because there are other people who use the machines and it's hard to do the routines accordingly.

i try to go to the gym at least 3 times a week to do strength training and cardio. By the end of the week though my cardio minutes and calories burned are usually a lot higher than the ones in my fitness plan. myFitness tells me I should be eating more to account for the calories burned but does anyone know how much more I should be eating? it doesn't automatically change in the nutrition plan and I don't want to get into the habit of "oh I can eat this because I'm going to work out later"

What do you guys think about strength training? How long do you think it will take to show signs of muscle growth? I've only been doing strength training for two weeks but I want to know when all this soreness will pay off. I'm excited for summer sexy arms!

If you have a cable box, there are some GREAT On Demand workouts for free under the sports and entertainment section. Anything from kickboxing to yoga, they're quick routines to do in your room if you don't have time to hit the gym! And did I mention they were free? :)
