I'm on a low carb diet right now, and I have tried it before. The one I'm on now is Phase 1 of the P90X Diet, and I am following it very strictly. I am not getting the numbers on the scale that I would like, but I am doing a lot of strength training and I need extra protein to rebuild the muscles. My husband is losing lots of weight, though.
Every time I've tried a low carb diet in the past, I got dark circles under my eyes and had absolutely no energy within 9 days. My husband always has more success with it than I do, and I've heard from other women that they also had terrible results with it while their husbands/boyfriends lost weight. Also, any sensible diet will not keep you low carb for more than two months because it is potentially damaging to your kidneys because of the increased protein (or so I've read).
Personally, my body lets go of the weight more easily on a more balanced food plan. I don't know if that's helpful to you, though. Good luck with whatever plan you choose.
