My version of low-carb is just basically less bread and pasta. I love veggies and lean meat, so that's what I follow. Most low-carb diets I've read are ones that only keep the carb level extremely low for two weeks. Any longer is difficult, and actually you can do diets like the South Beach diet and start at Phase 2 and still lose the weight you want to lose, only slower, which is healthier. I think a benefit to a low or reduce carb diet with plenty of veggies is the added fiber and nutrients from the right veggies and fruits. Like any diet, a low-carb diet should be more balanced with plenty of veggies.
I'm on a low carb diet right now, and I have tried it before. The one I'm on now is Phase 1 of the P90X Diet, and I am following it very strictly. I am not getting the numbers on the scale that I would like, but I am doing a lot of strength training and I need extra protein to rebuild the muscles. My husband is losing lots of weight, though.
Every time I've tried a low carb diet in the past, I got dark circles under my eyes and had absolutely no energy within 9 days. My husband always has more success with it than I do, and I've heard from other women that they also had terrible results with it while their husbands/boyfriends lost weight. Also, any sensible diet will not keep you low carb for more than two months because it is potentially damaging to your kidneys because of the increased protein (or so I've read).
Personally, my body lets go of the weight more easily on a more balanced food plan. I don't know if that's helpful to you, though. Good luck with whatever plan you choose.
I was just wondering if anyone has followed this before. I technically don't do low carb, just reduced because that really is what helps me lose weight. I still eat fruits and veggies, but I don't eat a lot of oatmeal or cereal except on the weekends or something. Kind of like loosely following the South Beach diet, I guess. I like salads with chicken a lot, like ones from Chickfila or Zaxby's. Just curious if anyone has had success with a low-carb diet before, because I lose about 10 pounds a month when I do one.
