Yoga is great cross-training for just about any sport or physical activity. I do Rodney Yee's AM Yoga for your week, one segment every night to keep my body from tightening up and locking. I love it.

I haven't come across a yoga practice dvd for dancers that I really like. You'd think one of the Rachel Brice ones would be good, because she's been doing yoga for so long, but I haven't been impressed with any of hers. There was one on VHS several years ago by Aleili that was really good, but I suspect it's out of print.

On our way to Mordor.

I totally get the stiff as a board thing. As I move through learning this art I meet so many fabulous beautiful women and what they all have in common is after they've been in belly dancing for a while, they've all picked up yoga either on an irregular basis or once or more a week. So I thought lets give it a try and it has made a difference. It has enabled me to enjoy the lessons more and I'm not suffering the next day.

My DVD's came today! I have both seasons of "Shimmy" and "Belly Dance Basics and Beyond." I go to a live class on Thursday nights, but I am stiff as a board and terribly uncoordinated. Seriously, I am the worst student there. I don't have much experience with any kind of dancing, at all. But I want to do this and have fun!

Words mean things.

Try googling the various web sites for bellydance classes and schools. From time to time they give clips of recommended music for various levels of student. I usually listen to them and then download those I like from Itunes and such. Try bellyup.ca under their student practice kit for a few samples. Enjoy!

I personally really enjoyed Jillina's "Shape up and hip out", even though it's more of a workout. I also liked "East Coast Tribal", although the music is industrial.

Any ideas for a total beginner? I don't have access to classes locally, but would love to learn good technique. Any thoughts? I would really appreciate any information..there are so many dvds out there, I don't know where to start?

I have a huge belly dance dvd/vhs collection. The first I used were Neena and Veena. I have 8 of their videos. I love them all they are easy but give you a pretty good foundation on basic moves and a little more. I have Luscious and Love Potion.I need more practice before I can master these. I have Jillina hip out and shape up which I love for cardio.I have a lot more but I am mainly using these two to regain my pre weight shape.

Right now I am working with "Cardio Belly Dance with Dolphina". Its a little slow at times while other parts leave me breathless (being out of shape and a newb to belly dance lol). So I just use the slow times to work on the moves I have trouble with.

I also have Luscious and its sequel, Love Potion. I really like these DVD's! I haven't really tried dancing with them yet but I would play them to see what they are like. Anyone else use these?

I have only had the chance to give my DVD Bellydance Basics and Beyond: Technique for a Solid Foundation by Jenna one run through. I am not very impressed but maybe it will grow on me. I also think I'll be selecting another DVD.

I just got Pop, Lock, & Shimmy (by Michelle Joyce) for Christmas and love it. You can check out her website: (http://cheekygirlsproductions.com/) Great DVD and inexpensive as well. She's also got more DVDs in the works.

the current one I am working on is Dolphina's Warrior Godess tape. She is extremely hokey. If you want to be able to do the tapes without looking at her funny.

The parts that I find hard are the Soft- Sharp figure eights and doing hip moves while lunging.

I'm still working my way through Jillina's 3 DVDs. Borrowed the Lv 1 from a friend and learned the dance, but it's been a few months since I last did it and I'm afraid I'm forgetting it! Good thing I wrote it down.

This past week I finally learned the last part of the Lv 2 dance, and yay for me I have the music so I can dance it whenever I want (by Warda, track 4 on the first BDSS CD). My teacher started teaching us the Lv 3 dance (the "horse" dance), and I've almost learned the whole thing. I am having some trouble with the "stutter step backwards camels", as I call them, as well as getting all them Egyptian twists done properly.

Mind you, none of these dances I can do well enough to perform. I just know all the combos and can at least adequately execute them. I did demo the Lv 2 dance for my Scottish country dance group one evening after a practice, and even though I hadn't learned the end of it, and it wasn't flawless, they thought it was cool. So there's hope for me yet. ;)

Oh, yeah, so I recommend Jillina's DVDs. I've noticed a couple goofs here and there, such as demonstrating a tapping hip circle going one way, then going the other way during the practice w/music. But other than that I think they're pretty darn good. Not for someone brand new to the art, however. I started with the Lv 1 DVD about 2 months into taking a class, and found I could keep up. Plus my teacher has borrowed styling from Jillina, so it felt like being in her class.

The end.

I'll admit that Rania's voice and expressions are fairly hokey, but starting out I don't have anything else to compare it too. I think that the DVDs are good for the basic steps and I would tend to agree that it may be a little more fitness than bellydance. I can't wait to expand the selection with some of the other suggestions too.

I love the Suhaila series - especially the yoga.

Lately I've been a big fan of these DVDs:

East Coast Tribal (Kick butt warmup and drills and innovative moves)
Contemporary Bellydance and Yoga Conditioning with Ariellah (FABULOUS yoga warm ups)
Bellydance - Tribal Fusion NYC (I giggle every time Darshan describes something as "juicy")

Well, I still teach my classes twice a week and every week we have troupe practice, but yeah, I'm noticing that I'm slacking on my own drills, which are probably pretty much the same as everyone does, here's mine:

Bellydance drills:

16 up hips rt
16 up hips lft
16 down hips rt
16 down hips lft
16 pelvic locks front
16 pelvic locks back
16 chest lifts
16 chest drops
16 chest slides (back and forth)
16 horizontal chest circles
16 body rolls down
16 body rolls up
16 belly rolls up
16 belly rolls down
16 umi rt
16 umi lft
16 maya (alternating sides)
16 taxim (alternating sides)

P.S. I have a bootleg copy of Suzanne's workout, and I used to do it, but it's SO long!

Oh Turkish music!!! I LOVE IT!!!! Nothing beats a clarinet.

I too have a DVD/video "habit" -- and I like collecting the old out-of-print ones as well! You don't see much in the way of that 1970's style cabaret dancing anymore, unless you buy old videos. And it's SO cool to see some of our current "stars" when they were young!

I know what you mean about the DVDs being heavy on beginner level. Practically everything commercially available is beginner level -- except for a scant few of IAMED's DVDs -- but then, those are SO expensive that I almost always try to buy those second-hand. Neon is releasing several more advanced dvds in the next year or so. If you check worlddancenewyork.com, on the right hand side, there is a list of upcoming releases. She's got another Tribal instructional and 2 Egyptian style ones coming in 2008.

You know, I saw that video (instructional fitness workout within traditional movement) reviewed on the bellydancevideos Yahoo group a long time ago and everybody who bought it really liked it. I don't know why I never bought it. I think I'll quit procrastinating and just buy it, now. :)

I like Heartbeat of BD too. I stole her shimmy drill for my students :) Rachel's DVD doesn't impress me much -- I'm not crazy about the yoga, since I have other dvds that do a better job (I think) and the bellydance section is all Suhaila fundamental stuff, which I drill everyday anyway. (Or rather -- I'm SUPPOSED to be drilling every day. LOL).

Ariellah's DVD is on order, but it's stuck in an order with another DVD that is back-ordered so I have no idea when it will ship. I've heard so many good things about it that I'm really looking forward to FINALLY getting it.

I'm going back to Suzanna DelVecchio's Precision Motion Workout sometime this week. I used to do it as a practice drill and I liked it, so I'm not sure why I quit ...

I started another thread elsewhere asking people if their bellydance practice is suffering because of the additional cardio and strength training. I think mine is. (I KNOW mine is -- but I guess I need to relearn how to manage my time at home!)

We had Artie here last summer, but she didn't teach Turkish, that was the previous workshop which I couldn't attend. I'm hoping when she comes back through she will do Turkish again. My style is primarily tribal fusion, but I love the Turkish style, it always brings a smile to my face to watch it, and I love the music.

I am unfortunately a DVD addict! I have scads and scads of them, and I've found that the great majority are beginner level. I can recommend one fitness release that most people don't know about, but I found enjoyable: Belly Dance - Instructional Fitness Workout Within Traditional Movement. If you haven't tried this one, give it a shot.

There are a few DVDs that I use over and over for toning and keeping in the game. Heartbeat of Bellydance has two really useful shimmy drills on it, and I like Rachel Brice's drill DVD for just keeping on point. I'm trying to like the yoga, but it does not make me happy. I do it anyway though. I have Suhalia's fitness ones, though I haven't done them in a while. I figured I'd get on your month long thing with them and see how that goes.

Then there are a few that are more instructional, but I want to do them more often, I'm just lazy! I should know the new Fat Chance one back to front as long as I've had it, but I've only played it once. I have Ariellah's DVD, who I really like, but I've not even watched it all the way through. I have been keeping up with doing 30 minutes of cardio every day though. When does Neon's new DVD come out? I like her DVDs so far.

Oh I love Artie! She was here last November, and we're hoping to bring her back soon! But I'm definately going to folk tours camp next year!! I like her DVD but it's SOOO basic -- she says she's working on others, so I'm hoping they'll appear soon!

Turkish Orientale is/was my first love. It's coming back in fashion again, and so is Turkish folk dance. I'm loving it! We had Amhet Luleci in St. Louis this spring, and I think he's teaching at KDI next year. He's AWESOME!

I've never liked Rania as a dancer, but I had one of her fitness dvds and really enjoyed it. I always got the impression she was a much better fitness instructor than dancer. There just isn't much in the way of pre-packaged bellydance for cardio dvds that are actually challenging. I use Temple of Jehan's Ultimate Bellydance Fitness workout with a weight belt for some extra toning, and have ordered cardio Bellydance from Neon, but it's not here yet.

Do you have any fitness favorite? I always pimp Suhaila's dvds since I'm a student of hers, but I certainly don't know all of what's out there.

Rania is my least favorite....well, she and Dolphinia are my least favorites. Rania makes moony porn faces at the camera the whole time, and she is a stiff and unimpressive dancer. Just my opinion, I guess I just wanted to warn you, you sounded so excited!

For good Turkish dancing, pick up Artemis Mourat's Turkish DVD, she's awesome.

Hold off on getting the I LOve Turkish DVD. I'm unimpressed so far. It's not Turkish as I understand it -- more just a bunch of skirt work, and not very complex moves either! Let me finish watching it before I pronounce judgement, though.

I just put the Rania DVDs in my Netflix queue! I can't wait to try them!

Here's the thread to "pimp" your favorite DVD, or a new one you're working on.

I'll start -- I'm creating a skirt chorography for my beginners, so tonight I'm going to work with Sarah Skinner's I Love Turkish Bellydance DVD. I bought this ages ago and still haven't watched it all the way through!
