Goal 8-10 AF days: Actual 8 AF days:
I think I have got to include counting # of drinks on non-AF days.
But I am not unhappy with the 8 days. It is not the easiest habit to change.

Great to hear from you, AuntVonna! I, too, was a little lean on the AF days in Jan. - only a total of 6 - yikes! I'm blaming both a sciatic & pinched neck nerve as downtime. Completely put me out of commission until I went to a chiropractor last week.

WTG everyone who did so well in January! My month wasn't a total wash. I had two AF days (way below my goal) but I was also in DC for a week at FEMA working on the Haiti earthquake situation and the most I ever had in one night was 3 drinks. Most nights it was two and one night it was none. I think the key is to keep busy...instead of vegging in front of the tv and computer. That's my goal for February! Good luck next month everyone!

Jayme105.
31/31 is amazing!
I only managed 5 days AF in January. Hoping to double that to 10 days in February.
Sending congrats to the rest of the team too, I think everyone has done really well this month.

To everyone this month on your AF/Moderation Days! The support of this team is wonderful and has made a huge impact on my life. For the first time (since my pregnancy in '98) I have had an entire month 31/31 AF!

I'm ending the month with 14 days AF (short 1 day of my goal mark of 15)...
I feel very great about this! I plan on sticking to my plan and having an average 15 days per month AF so it's DOABLE!!!
Posted the new thread for February for those who might want to set their intentions for the month.

Well I thought of 'editing' my post but coming clean and noting that I have maintained at 11AF days (as I have not been AF with my out of town trip). No guilt because I at least got past the 10 mark... but for sure going to aim to hit that 15 next month. I think the meeting with the personal trainer will kick my butt into re-set mode.

Wow! I am so impressed reading all of the messages. I don't always comment as I am not as successful as so many of you.....
I don't know if I will ever be AF all the time, but am at least more aware of choices.
So far this month - 6AF days - Goal is 8-10.
Self-study: So many underlying reasons prod my decision to drink at 5:00. As I work through these, maybe it will be easier to say NO to this 5:00 desire.
Such a great group. Thanks!!!

Back to AF week - will hit my 15 day goal by Thursday! Now I just need to figure out my weekends and get those to be AF too (it's my toughest or weakest point). Anxious to get Allen Carr's book in (ordered it last week).
Still not feeling 100% which affects my whole 'spirit' of positivity but I'm fighting it. One day at a time...

Well JAYME105... I didn't do the 30 day streak but I am happy with my totals for the month so far. I have a total of 11 days AF so far so for sure going to reach my intention as I set out for the year to reach 15 days per month. Last year I had 19 days in January and I may match that one.
Sandy on your 5 day streak!
Nulife - you are doing great! 50/50 is pretty great!!

Happy hour with co-workers last night, so my 5 day AF streak came to an end. BUT...it's Friday, we have no wine in the house, dinner is done, and unless DH runs out to the store to get some, I'll be perfectly happy with my herbal tea!

Everyone is doing well! The fact that we moderate and have some AF days means success!
I have my 7th day in as of today and, like Mammabug, I'm almost afraid of saying it (because that little 'devil' me might rebel and make me want it more)... but I'd like to do a 30 day AF streak. It's something I have never done and my highest AF totals last year was in Jan with 19 days.
And Windstar like you - if I'm busy I don't even think about it. Today was super productive and because I can't just sit and watch TV (or I'll feel like grabbing a drink)... I just keep moving. If I do this for 30 days, I'll for sure reach a couple of goals - leave 170Ville by month's end AND finally do a 30 day streak!

Had my first day in Jan. 1/15
Yah
I think I better revise my challenge as I am running out of days. I was doing great in Dec with approx 10 AF days and days with 1 or 2 wines a night and it seems as soon as I challenged my self with a specific number I went south.
Funny how the brain works. Mine has been that way with weight loss too. I could never go on a diet. I could only loose weight if I was so happy and busy that weight loss was a side effect.

Made it through another evening, didn't even have any cravings or desire for a drink. Nothing is wrong with me, I was just busy. So, now I have 4 days AF out of 14 this month...not so bad.

I did well Monday night, so now I have 3 AF days this month. I had some wine with dinner last night, but managed to hold myself to two smallish glasses. So much for not drinking during the week, but hey, at least I didn't drink a 6 pack, eh?

My goal for the rest of January is to only drink on Fridays and Saturdays. When I'm out with friends I usually only have 3 or 4 drinks, but when I drink on weekdays I open a bottle of wine at home and almost always finish it (and sometimes even have more). I'd never thought of the Fri/Sat idea before!

Welcome back ICAN140. WINDSTAR Good to see you posting again too. You made great success last year when you posted all the time.Remember you were my inspiration and now I am close to my weight goal and doing not so bad
SEPTSPIRIT I actually feel good. Despite the fact I dont have any AF days in Jan. I feel so much more in control than I have for years. As "a bottle a wine a night" girl or nothing it seems weird to be in this groove of having a glass a night. I want that glass but that is all. I think I will go with it and see how it goes. I am doing some of Boot Camp ( first exercise in a while so maybe it will just happen) After 40 plus years I know that if I try too hard with these things it always back fires
So I will go with the flow...

I am getting a calendar and some stickers for my wall at work. I think having it in my face will help.
I have actually managed 2 AF days so far this week, amazingly. It helps, as I said before, that to get beer I would have to go out in the frigid weather and buy some...but there is wine and hard liquor in the house, and I have managed to stay away from them. Tonight I may have a hot buttered rum though, since it is supposed to be below zero wind chill (can you believe it, in North Texas!!) I should put it off til tomorrow, which is actually one of the days that I "can" drink...we shall see.

I love the clips idea! So you use one regular one for each pound and a large one for the 10th pound? Neat idea! I had started a post last year about using a string of beads for my AF days and the reward being I could make something nice with it in the end. I quit that... but still have the beads. The visuals are great tools - whatever works but it's great to hear everyone's ideas!
ICAN140 - so glad you're joining us!
This year is going to be a fabulous one! MAMMABUG don't despair on not getting a day in yet. You are being very moderate and that in itself is great!
I have gotten my 2nd AF day in and aiming for the 3rd in a row. I find once I get a streak going, it's harder to break it. With plans for Friday at 6pm to go to visit Good Life - my regular 'Friday' after work drinks will be avoided.
Replacing the regular 'having a drink' habit with a better habit is what has been key for me and the results are a more productive and healthy me. I get SOOOOO much more done!
Keep posting your ideas and progress... We are going to have a fabulous month!

I have a big new 2010 calendar on the wall and actually have to go to WMart tomorrow.....looking for those gold stars! What a great visual and idea.
The Mr already wonders about the string of paper clips hanging on the wall. (My visual for pounds lost is a string of paper clips. For every 10th pound, I use a jumbo one. There's another string of "to loose" paper clips with the last one being a jumbo red one.)
I can already say that January 6th, won't be an AF day, but with new inspiration, tomorrow is a good day to start over.

Hi everyone, I'm back again too...I see that some of you had a falling out with Sparkpeople too ! I'm 10 lbs. heavier than when I first started to Spark 3 years ago - and I bought pants in a size that I don't even want to type. I just wanted to say hi everyone, and I'm sure I'll have no AF days for a while, but you guys are the only group on here that I really feel are struggling with the same things I am.

I read some of the posts and it makes me feel better that I am not the only one with this too often issue. I did not keep track in 2009 although for awhile I was keeping track of how many.... I don't think my monthly numbers for AF days would be very high (more like a couple a month).
But this is a new day - and a new way of counting for me....All is well in my world!!!!
Thanks everyone.

I got my calendar. Now all I need is my stickers.Back to walmart I guess. ( Avoiding the candy isle)
Still no AFs for me. It is going to have to be the last two weeks of Jan if I am going to get my 15 in this month.
The good news is I have been only having 1 or 2 glassed a night and often not wanting to finish the glass. Weird for me. That is huge progress. I just cant wrap my brain around AF with wine still in the house. I guess I will just have to finish it up and not buy more Lets go everyone Heres to Jan 2010

back WINDSTAR!! We missed you!
I have to admit that in reviewing what prevented me from succeeding in my weight loss goals last year or made me lose ground was the fact that I drank too much. As I posted my AF days, I realized that the only month I had a great number was January, so now challenging myself like you to not drink during the weekdays (so no drinks Sunday to Thursday).
Got a late start though as tonight is my first AF day for 2010... but it's never too late to join the challenge.
I've got my new calendar up and visible for all to see and maybe question my stuff... I used to keep it hidden and maybe posting it on the bulletin board in my workout room/area so I can see every day my progress and heck maybe I'll even resort to using stickers (stars) for my AF days to make them stand out ... Whatever works right?!
I know from my experience last year that this is one habit that I need discipline to really change if I want to achieve my weight loss goals.
I'm so happy to be on this journey with this amazing team! Let's DO THIS!!!

Ok everybody....I think I am almost ready to do this. I had to go up a size in clothes (after coming down two sizes over the past two years). The biggest thing I do wrong is drink. If I could just stick to one drink, I would be ok, but it never works out that way. So, I need to say that I am going to only drink on days I don't have to work the next, which means only on Friday and Saturday evenings. Wish me luck...I just came up with this idea today, we will see how it goes. It helps that we are out of beer at the house right now.

Great goal-setting everyone! Sandy, both you and Helene are making me wish I'd kept better track of my AF days - I didn't start using the team app until November of this year - until then I was using the 'finger method' to keep track ;-)

Welcome back, AuntVonna & Mamabug999!!!
Inspired by SeptSpirit, I decided to reflect on how 2009 went, so here are my monthly AF totals for the year:
January 12 February 13 March 12 April 11 May 6 June 10 July 5 August 2 (yikes!!!) September 7 October 7 November 7 December 10
I'd like to get back to more AF days during the week. I continually have problems saying NO if wine is present (like when DH brings it home for no apparent reason).
I think I'll shoot for having at least 1/2 the month AF, so around 15 is my goal.

I had a horrible December (well, horrible year actually in terms of AF goals), but that's behind me and I'm ready to get my butt back in gear. For Jan. my AF goal is 12 days. Happy 2010 everyone-it's going to be a good year!

AgingSlowly, I know what you mean! When I'm around people who don't drink, I don't feel the need to drink. I really started drinking when I got married. My husband drinks about every day, so I do, too. The difference is how MUCH I drink. My wee 5'3" 160lb self can down eight servings of whiskey and follow it with a couple glasses of wine whereas my 6'2" 280lb husband sticks to four or five beers/wine.
I actually did better over Christmas since we were travelling. I'll pledge sixteen AF days for January.
And hot tea does help!

Hi all and Happy 2010!!
Agingslowly! Doobrie's suggestion is a good one - when I first started trying for some AF days, I found subbing in a drink of some sort really helpful to get me past that bump. Like you, DH and I had a 'standard' daily cocktail hour that we rarely missed.
I was considering trying for a full month AF, but I don't think my heart's in it. I am moderating well, and do enjoy a glass of wine occasionally. So, I will be sticking with the same goal as in the past few months - 25 AF days. BUT, I am also going to aim to limit my intake to 2 glasses on days I do drink. I find any more than that and I've had more than I need - and feel it the next day.
So excited to be taking on a New Year with you all!

I am back and pledging 15 AF this month. None so far.
Note to self. Must buy a new calendar. It is so helpful to have a calendar to look back on and see how you did. I did what you did SEPTSPIRIT and counted up my AFs each month for the past year. I kept up my calendar even when I wasnt active on sparkpeople Very. interesting!! It really tells you a bit about yourself
Heres to a great 2010 !!

AGINGSLOWLY60!
The formula for counting for the month was never one I followed too well (because I'm bad with numbers). So what I adopted was just counting my AF day (the positive days)... No matter what you achieve, being here will help you along. We're here to support each other in changing our habits.
Doobrie's suggestion is great! There's another post that has mocktails which might give you good ideas of things to do or have instead of the real alcohol!
Looking forward to getting to know you better!

Thanks DOOBRIE!
Good ideas for tea or low-cal something at 5:00.

Agingslowly!
8-10 AF days for January is a very good goal to go for. Try to find something else you can drink at 5:00 instead. I always find a cup of tea helps when I'm being strong - some others find fizzy low cal drinks helpful.
Good luck!

I am new to this team. And I have to tell you AF days are not impossible, but often difficult. When I vacation with my sister or sister-in-law who do not drink - I don't drink. So I know it is possible. But my DH and I do drink nearly every day - 5:00 - clockwork. So, it may sound like my AF goal is not very many, but it is a start.
AF days for January = 8-10. If I understand the numbering system correctly... 2/31/21/42
Hoping to get a handle on this....

I couldn't even tell you how many AF days that I had in Dec because I stopped tracking. I would like to get serious about it again though. I'm going to say that I will be AF for at least 20 days this month. ~Melissa~

Great post Helene. I agree with you, we've really got to have more AF days in 2010 if we want to lose this surplus weight.
I'm going for 15 days AF every month too.
Let's make 2010 our best year yet!

I decided to post this one a bit earlier as I know many of us are reflecting on posting our goals and challenges for the upcoming new month, but better yet... NEW YEAR!!
Here are my monthly totals for the year: January 19AF days February 9AF days March 10AF days April 4AF days May 11AF days June 9AF days July 2AF days (can you tell it was vacation month?!) August 7AF days September 5AF days October 5AF days November 8AF days December 7AF days
So my totals are not out of this world, but I am proud of them. I know they can (and WILL) be improved upon. For me to achieve my weight loss goals I know I must increase my AF days. In reviewing my blogs (which is my form of journalling) I know that this is one area that needs to change if the weight is to come off!
So my pledge is to have an average of 15 days per month AF. I would like to achieve for a first time EVER that 30 days AF and January might be the month to do it (although I know I have an out of town visit with work ... so I may reach 25 days but heck that's more than the biggest day I had last year).
What is your plan for 2010? So many of you have done so well! Be proud to just BE here! This team is the most supportive one you'll ever find. I know it's made a huge difference for me and I thank each and every one of you for this.
Cheers to the best year ever Sparkers! Let's DO THIS!!
