I love fish & seafood of pretty much any kind. Overfishing, of course, is a concern of mine. Seeing that there's a sustainably managed line of frozen fish products coming out warms my little heart:

Sorry to have been away so long, gang, I've had some medical issues to deal with (all fine now!)
This may be a little remedial for most of us, but thought this article on "How to Go Green" might be helpful for the new comers (or, ahem, evangelizing...)

Sorry, I'm late, I went camping over the weekend and just got back.
This week we have a discussion about Natural Gas vs. Renewable Energy Sources. An interesting point that some natural gas can be considered renewable (methane, from landfill & sewer operations).
It does pose a question worth chewing on: Which is more eco-friendly, expensive renewable energy, or increased fuel efficiency with a semi-renewable fuel source? www.green-energy-news.com/arch/nrgs2011/20 110045.html

Today's article is from Yahoo! News, about efforts to build new oyster reefs in the gulf. There's some interesting trivia in there about how important oysters are to the ecology.

Found a blog resource that might be of interest, the Fair Trade Resource Network. Here's a link to their entry comparing the two Fair Trade certifications:
(and now I'm off to go fix my spark reminder and see why it didn't alert me to how badly I dropped the ball on this!)

Here is my article of the week. It comes from our local free weekly. While our Hearst owned newspaper promotes development of Eagle Ford gas deposits as an economic boon, it could well destroy our water supply.

I've been following Guy Negre's air powered cars for years on the web. I (and countless others) can't decide whether it is a con or practical or a hopelessly unrealistic dream. I hope it really works and works well.

That's quite a site. I also use various topics of Stumbleupon to find interesting green articles. NEELIXNTES thanks for the link to that house it looks interesting.
Here is a link to a Texas builder who sells affordable houses made with lots of recycled items. In this TEDx talk he explains some of his philosophy. His name is Ted Phillips.
We have a single stream system. All of the waste management companies use only one container for recyclables in in the area. It really does make it easier as long as you know what items are recyclable. We need more clarification on that but just chucking it in one or two containers is much easier then when we had to separate everything out and haul it to the containers ourselves.

I missed out on Greenbuild when it was in town. I wish I had been able to go on the tour of this house but no matter what it will stick out in a traditional neighborhood. I am much more interested in the green homes that blend into their surroundings or that have been retrofitted but it sure is pretty to look at

Thanks for posting the article. That must be the system used here. It does make recycling a lot easier. It can't handle shredded paper so we still take that to special dumpsters at schools and churches where they receive some funds for what they collect. Of course it also won't handle plastic and metal caps.
It does make it a lot easier. But some people just won't do it. The city's big communication campaign now is that you shouldn't put garbage in the blue recycle bins nor recyclables in the brown garbage bins.
I'm going to cheat by putting in a link to an article I published on my blog about electric power from existing oil and gas wells. Basically the amount that could be harvested using existing technology is beyond belief.
Maybe these factories will become more widespread and remove another excuse for not recycling!

That's an interesting story. I didn't know that seahorses were endangered.
Here is a story about an advance wall system that uses recycled glass. I have been following sustainable building for 15 years. They say they've been building for 15 years. But this is new to me.

This one is about a controversial subject. I don't have a reason to need a fur to stay warm. A winter coat will last me two decades or more and I rarely spend a lot of time outside when it does drop below freezing here (twice a year briefly.) I wonder what folks who have to deal with bitter cold think.

That's an interesting article NjordGal. These companies can make a large impact if they put their power behind such goals.
Here is not so much an article but many articles. Whole Earth Review archives can now be read online. They have made them so that they can't be copy and pasted but at least many of them can be read. If you think you need to pay something to read them keep looking.
It's kind of a stretch calling this an "article" but I think it's in the spirit of the challenge.
Short version: The National Science Foundation is funding projects that qualify as "Environmental Sustainability" with topics of interest in Industrial Ecology, Green Engineering Ecological Engineering, and Earth Systems Engineering.
After all, sustainability means running the global environment - Earth Inc. - like a corporation: with depreciation, amortization and maintenance accounts. In other words, keeping the asset whole, rather than undermining your natural capital. Maurice Strong
I'm not sure I agree with the visual of "running... Earth Inc.... like a corporation..." but it's something to think about. It is a major resource that is just not properly maintained. How many businesses would get very far if they didn't maintain their buildings & grounds?

It's late for this week, but here's the article I read today:
I was just cruising through the team goals and saw that one is to read an article on sustainability every week. I thought it might be easier if we share our articles...
My article this morning was on converting shipping containers to temporary housing in emergency areas, like Haiti. Recycling AND humanitarian aid, what can be bad about that?? I've heard about a family that used a number of shipping containers to build a house, but I didn't realize it was being used in emergency situations as well!
