last night I gathered up clothes that I don't wear much anymore and bagged them up to go to our local good will - and some not so gently ones I'm thinking of making dog toys with!

I just mowed my front yard with my calorie-powered reel mower. It's hard work, but it's exercise, environmentally sound, I can do it early in the morning without waking my neighbors -and the mower only cost me $120. I was spending $1000 a season for a service to do it for me; I can certainly think of other ways to spend the $900 I'm saving!!

Hmmm... that does sound interesting. I usually end up throwing out the juices/broth left from stew and other crockpot creations. I will have to try that next time.

I have a friend whos' family are really big meat eaters and whenever she cooks roasts beef, pork, chicken, turkey, ham...I will confiscate the juices left in the roast pan. She throws it away!!! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon I take it home, skim all fat off the top, put into soup pot, add all the fresh veggies I have hanging around, include either beans, barley, lentils, pasta or brown/wild rice and it is SOUP!! I make a huge pot and freeze 1 quart portions for a quick meal. At least once a week or more, she has broth to give me!!! i also will take the bones of all her meals and MAKE broth too!

Today I swept the carpet in my living room instead of vacuuming it. I switched from my regular dish soap to an eco-friendly one, and I saved the paper and pencil shavings from my kids drawing today for something. We turned off the heat a while ago and it saved us a ton on our electricity bill! We even switched to online banking this month!

On Friday I walked in the culverts alongside the road collecting trash. When I went to the grocery store I remembered to bring my bags which is a really good thing because they don't have plastic bags anymore!! They sell reusable bags but otherwise have eliminated plastic bags. YAY!!

My city doesn't even recycle plastics yet, but I work in a city that does, so I save my recycling and take it once a month or so to also save on gas.

It really piles up, though! ;)

We take in the recycling we can get money for, and when we do we can drop off the ones the city won't pick up.

I am very happy. Where I live they only recycle plastics 1 and 2. During the 4th of July I was talking with my partner's sister (She lives in another town) and she told me her city recycles all plastics. SO now we are saving plastics that are not 1 or 2 and she will take to the recycling plant on her city. Big step in my opinion....

I'm hanging the laundry out again. And all of my wash was done in cool water!

Today I am attending a public fireworks show in the U. S. It is our Independence day and the idea of buying my own fireworks to use for my own display seems frivolous to me. I will not add to the pollution just for myself. I am fine, and happy to go see a public display since it isn't like I have any say in them not being set off.

I would love it if the challenge could be a monthly thing, actually. The more we pots here, the better chance we have of giving people ideas on how they too can be green or more green!

Today I am avoiding the laundry to save water! Ha ha. And I'll be using my fabric shopping bags for groceries, etc.

Since this challenge arrived so close to the end of June I thought we should extend it through July as the official monthly challenge.

Today I visited an organic, pasture-fed, raw milk dairy. I will post a blog about it after the holiday. It obviously isn't as green as something that would be vegan but it was a fascinating operation and I got to snap a whole lot of pictures while touring. I didn't get to meet with the bovine vet owners and organic milk industry consultants, but it was 411 heavy.

It's my hubby's b-day today!
So we are going to celebrate in the city (we live in the country) because I have an appt there anyway. Doubling up on trips and errands to the big city makes sense. We are going to park the car centrally and walk everywhere we would like to go.

Today I made arrangements for someone who shelters animals to pick up blankets, etc. I've collected. Did my daily parking lot trash pickup. Packed up bags of children's clothing I finally finished washing recycled from the trash. Asthma kicking a fuss so can't spend too much time in the humidity but do what I can.

Have a great weekend!

For my workout today, I'm taking a page out of William's book. I'm taking a trash bag with me will pick up the trash along the highway.

I've seen a lot of trash and have picked up what I can on my walks, but I'm SUPER motivated to pick up trash weekly now because I recently found out that MOST litter on roadways ENDS UP IN THE WATER.

I'm talking about a body of water, like a river. All rivers empty into a larger body of water like a lake or the ocean.

I was reading David Suzuki's article in the paper about these HUGE vortexes of swirling garbage in the ocean - most of it plastic.
View artcile here:
http://www.straight.com/article-227730/d
avid-suzuki-what-we-do-oceans-we-do-ou
rselves

The part that resonated most with me is this: wildlife eat the plastic and feed it to their young as well, of course not understanding that it is plastic. The plastic is now in the food chain as part of that animal's flesh (which we eat) AND killing their young. Since humans are at the top of the food chain, we are eating the plastic too, getting cancer from it and seeing our food supplies slowly run out as our own garbage kills it.

The other side of this is the acidification of the oceans and the disappearance of the coral reefs. If the reefs disappear, we disappear, but first we go through the agony of dwindling food supplies, possibly wars for food and clean water and finally the starvation of humans. Yes, I'm a little ray of sunshine, aren't I? It's just reality, folks. Don't shoot the messenger.

So I find this predicament that we humans find ourselves completely frustrating and sad. We have GOT to pull our heads out of the sand and know that it all starts and ends with us!

As an added measure to the efforts of everyone who has picked up on this thread and run with it, why not ask a friend to join us in making One Million Acts of Green of reality this year? We have nothing to lose and our longevity on Earth to gain.

Peace and long life,
Your favorite HippiChick

Trash went out yesterday. We have only 3 cans for 5 apartments. Someone filled all the cans with clothing so I took most of it inside to wash and ready for the next time I get to donate somewhere. It was mostly very nice toddler stuff. I may go out and get more but I got tired dragging a blanket and my fur babies trying to get a ride! emoticon

Hi!

Good day for me. let's see. I took my recyclables to the plant (now I have space to collect more). While walking the dogs I did my daily thing. I picked up garbage on the way and used biodegradable bags to clean after the boys.

I also run around the house turning off lights behind those who leave them on.
Last summer I bought a rolling composter and ALL of my non-meat scraps go into the composter everyday and once a year I empty the compost onto my garden.
This year (since I'm a potter) I started making beautiful and very large compost jars. I have an order for two now.

I turned off un-needed lights today (DH has vision issues and leaves them on too much).
I composted my food waste.

I decided to keep the paper bags from the liquor store and use them to line my green bin. They are perfect for that!

My pet food comes in bags of woven plastic of some kind that is very strong. I'm thinking of making shopping bags out of them. One side will have a picture of a cat or dog. Anyone have any other ideas what they might be used for? I had been using them for trash but then I realized how nearly indestructable they are. They might make a good tent.

I was wondering... several thing that I do "green" are part of my routine. for instance, when i walk the dogs I always pick up a piece of garbage and take to the dumpster. I also pick up dog waste that someone left behind. I take the stairs, not the elevator, ever time that it is 3 or less floors. this "routine" things... should I consider them as acts or not? I already do them anyway...

Hippi,

I took your suggestion and made it a challenge in our team. Unfortunately I cannot make it annual, but monthly. Every beginning of the month I will edit the challenge so it reflects what we have already accomplished. Of course we can keep posting here, but if you fell like just join the challenge and log there also! let's go!

Here in Canada there is a movement called One Million Acts of Green.

Everyday you can do something green. It's as simple as hanging your clothes on the line, turning off lights when not needed, using rain water to water your garden or plants, planting trees, planting a garden, riding your bike instead or driving your car. The list could go on to...One Million!

What did YOU do today that was an act of GREEN?
