Last Sunday I was on a committee that held their first Green picnic. We had a catered lunch and all ticket holders were required to bring their own re-usable plates, cutlery and drinking cups or they would not be served. For anyone that forgot to bring their own re-usable materials, we had a booth where we sold each item for a dollar, with the proceeds going to a scholarship fund.
This is an annual event for us, but it was the first initiative to go green. All attendees were encouraged to take home all the garbage they created . This made participants aware of how much waste an individual can create, and also made them think of ways to reduce that waste.
We set up water stations for drinking water, and this eliminated plastic disposable bottled water containers to a large extent. People brought their own re-usable water containers and cups.
We had over 600 attendees and at most maybe 5 - 10 people with an attitude, who later complied because of the overwhelming support of the masses.
We had games for all ages, plenty of food, and a live band and dancing. It was a blast. The youth were particularly supportive and encouraged their elders in this initiative.
For anyone who is trying to conserve, re-use and recycle....consider eliminating disposable containers of any sort and carrying your own re-usable items to picnics. It really works and garbage is drastically reduced. Yes there is a bit of work because you have to wash your items.....but look on the bright side....your children and grandchildren can have an opportunity to enjoy this beautiful earth if we take care of our world, and learn from our mistakes.
