Last Sunday I was on a committee that held their first Green picnic. We had a catered lunch and all ticket holders were required to bring their own re-usable plates, cutlery and drinking cups or they would not be served. For anyone that forgot to bring their own re-usable materials, we had a booth where we sold each item for a dollar, with the proceeds going to a scholarship fund.

This is an annual event for us, but it was the first initiative to go green. All attendees were encouraged to take home all the garbage they created . This made participants aware of how much waste an individual can create, and also made them think of ways to reduce that waste.

We set up water stations for drinking water, and this eliminated plastic disposable bottled water containers to a large extent. People brought their own re-usable water containers and cups.

We had over 600 attendees and at most maybe 5 - 10 people with an attitude, who later complied because of the overwhelming support of the masses.

We had games for all ages, plenty of food, and a live band and dancing. It was a blast. The youth were particularly supportive and encouraged their elders in this initiative.

For anyone who is trying to conserve, re-use and recycle....consider eliminating disposable containers of any sort and carrying your own re-usable items to picnics. It really works and garbage is drastically reduced. Yes there is a bit of work because you have to wash your items.....but look on the bright side....your children and grandchildren can have an opportunity to enjoy this beautiful earth if we take care of our world, and learn from our mistakes.

Smile at someone today

I just discovered this challenge - and I'm happy to say that I've really grown to enjoy my long runs without my iPod or Nike+ system, all those gadgets! I just got back from a 7 miler this morning, and I just love how quiet the normally busy streets are in my neighbourhood. I love noticing new things along paths I've run many times before - this morning I saw a really beautiful bird...and a really fat cat.

I went running late today and the sun was brutal. The best part was seeing the two ospreys tending to the nest. The female was in the nest feeding one offspring and the male was on a nearby utility pole looking on.

The temperature hasn't been bad here in southern NJ but the humidity has been hard on my breathing. No AC yet but fans help for sleeping.

Biking and dancing outside last night was harder on the legs than usual. The heat is coming to the central valley (California). We're supposed to see a dip during the upcoming week, but we should be back up to 90s + for next weekend.

Well, since it was 103 degrees today, I had to wait until dark to take my walk. It was still very hot, but nice to get out with the dog. I will have to say at 9pm, everything is very quiet!

True confession. I love biking outside, but I'm a little addicted to the computer on my cycle. I like to click between average speed time biking and cadence. On the plus side I've commuted by bike 3 one way trips out of 7 so far this week.

it can even be dangerous to ones health. Going out to exercise between 11 am and 3 pm is not wise. But I wait and i do like, despite of the heat, to walk close to dawn. The only thing is that it seems we are having a huge population of mosquitoes this year....

Right on William. I know from living in Miami that it is so tempting to go workout in an air-conditioned space until hurricane season is over. It gets really uncomfy outside. I was running and had to go to the Runners World online site and find all their "beat the heat" articles to learn how to train in that weather.

Hi!

i am here and going strong. I keep walking outdoors at least 3 x a week. Although I have to wait for the very end of the day since it has been very hot and humid around here this week....

I am up for this challenge! I usually take my daughter for a walk in her stroller everyday as long as the weather isn't horrible. Today I had managed to lock my keys to the garage in one of the pockets on my stroller inside the garage. We had a nice walk none the less. Instead of using the stroller I carried her in a wrap. I have never used the wrap much outside, and it really was a good experience to take a walk outside with my baby in my arms. She is getting pretty heavy now, so as an added bonus it gave me a more intense workout as well!

Had a great run this morning. Went on the backroads around the wetlands just north of me. Kestrels were perched looking for prey, young rabbits darted across the road, and I even smelled a snake at one point. No watch, no headphones. Collected a lot of fog drizzle in my curls.

It has been a great week here in Boulder. We have been a little wet with storms, then a little warm with sun.

Today's run was good. I had gotten into the habit of running with an iPod around the reservoir lately. Today was nice not to have the gadget with me.

Yesterday I walked around the Denver Zoo for four hours. Kind of a long day, but I had my camera with me. Last night I went out with my husband to enjoy the sunset on a walk. We only had a water bottle with us then.

Oh Celia! How aweful! lol! Silly puppy!

That was smart to put the litter box up out of his reach.

I put the litter box on top of the dryer so my puppy would stop taking snacks to my bed, causing me to do extra laundry.

This morning I walked my dog for 20 minutes at 6:30am. I didn't take my Ipod. It was nice to hear all the birds singing, the fog forn blowing and the sounds of nature. The only distraction was my dog. He is a Springer Spaniel bred to hunt birds! He was going crazy with all the little song birds around! lol! (I kept him on leash!)

It's great to think about all the things we CAN do when we don't NEED technology. I'm trying to get back to a more simple frame of mind and enjoy what is around me.

Great challenge!

WE had our electronics (specially the ones that are clustered - Tv, VCR, DVD player) on a power cord. so when we go to bed we just urn the power cord off and the whole thing shuts down. Very practical.

I've started walking my dogs at least six 15 minute walks a day. And I now turn off my computer, external hd, speakers and monitor off every night.

Today I gave a clean bucket to a neighbor to recycle and he said he was saving cans for one. So hard to get people started, I was pleasantly surprised with his attitude. Awesome!

I'm assuming this means no ipods, cell phones, etc.? I took 2 great walks this weekend at sunrise, but I admit I had my ipod with me. If it makes a difference I was listening to 'Living on Earth' a podcast by NPR. emoticon

I can't imagine that any of us are having issues with cold weather at this point. Perhaps it is the opposite and we need to start cooling down a bit (I'm looking at you Florida, Texas, Louisiana, etc.)

Wherever you are in the climate spectrum I think June is a good time to take your workout outdoors if it isn't already. That is my challenge to you.

Two outdoor workouts/week this month. No electronic machines. Maybe a small watch at the most since you may have things to do.

Unplug and get out there. Bonus points if you get to experience a sunrise or sunset while you are at it. Share anything you saw on your walk, jog, or bike.
