I do that too Deva and I think it makes a difference. My water bill is sometimes as low as 8usd!

Turning off the shower whilst you soap yourself, and getting the kids to shower quickly can really help.

If you *think* you can do something, or that you cannot, either way, *you are right*

one thing i decided to do is stop showering days i don't really do anything. i notice that i don't feel nearly as 'dirty' as i thought i would. i'll have to wait until next bill to see if it really is making a difference since there are three people in the house now instead of two.

Hi,
I did a 'recycle bin' on trash pick-up day last week and it was 16 pounds. I didn't do so good with the water. My bill was less this month than last month but the usage was more. There were fewer days in this month's billing cycle. Last month's bill was for 31 days and average daily usage was 63.55 units but this month's bill was for 28 days and average daily usage was 65.36. Got to work on the water usage this month.

Hi

I'm new as of a few minutes ago. I visited last night and read many of the entries. I liked what I read.

I'm new with "Green" also.

I live in a senior citizens complex and never see the water bill.

But, last week I stared saving by putting a bottle full of water in my toilet tank to displace some of the water so it doesn't take as much to fill the tank after a flush. I talked to my friend in Canada and she knew about this but she has a brick in hers.

I've started shutting the water off during the time I brush my teeth and am more conscious of a tap not being turned completely off.

I'm happy to be part of this group

OK, I know it's the middle of September but I only take my recycling once a month. My trunk was FULL!
I took over 35lbs of plastic, cardboard, and glass, not to mention the soda cans that I turn in bi-weekly for cash (usually 3 lbs, which gets me almost $2.50!)

If you aren''t a loser, you can be!

I got my electric bill (finally!). From June to July I used less, but remember -- I was only home for 2 weeks during that billing statement. I was either out of town for my week long graduate class, or staying at my Dad's recouperating.

The difference wasn't as bad as I thought, either. Not sure how it will work for next month, with moving & all. But I can still compare August - September.

This month it's the water bill, though....

we talked about it and he said he'd be willing to run fans and turn off the ac, that it would use less electricity, so we're going to try that and see how it goes. i've already replaced all my lights with high efficiency bulbs.

So I got my water bill today so my challenge will be up about the second week of Oct. It was down a little from last month since i already tried to start watching my water use. What will really help me is rain so that I don't have to use the sprinkler system. I live in a neighborhood though that you get in trouble if your grass is brown so I don't have a choice but our city is on a watering schedule.

to save water:
- we wear clothes twice (except workout clothes)so i wash only once a week
- shower daily (sorry, we sweat and smell), but for no more than 10 minutes
- wash dishes in the sink once a day and i don't let the water run while i'm washing. water on to rinse only.
- computer or tv is on, but not both (unless necessary to look something up)
- i grew up where lights, tvs, radios, etc. were off unless you were in the room AND actually using said electricity-draining devices.
- i try to keep the central air around 72 in the summer, but it's hard since both sb and tk are ultra hotties.

now that sb and i are living together, we're going to have to figure out better ways to cut down on electricity. he has to have the fan going all day and i'm not a fan of that. no pun intended. plus, i just purchased dr. bronner's castille soap, so i'm going to try using that on days i don't do a heavy workout as an alternative to showering.

Why don`t we share water-saving tips then?

Dishes:I wait until they pile up, and then I very lightly rinse my dishes (with a tiny stream), soap them, and then rinse them again really quickly, and leave them to air dry.
Clothes: I wash once or twice a week, full loads only, with the Eco-balls and sometimes added eco-bleach.
Showers: Not every day, and I get wet, soap myself, rinse.
Teeth: Wet the brush, clean, rinse my mouth with about two mouthfulls of water. And teaching son to do the same.
Tea & Stuff: I never make more than I will drink, so I don`t have to throw away leftovers, but I hear from our members that they can be used to water plants
House Cleaning: Mostly dusting, water used on bathrooms and floors only, and usually the same bucket (not for the toilet of course)

If you *think* you can do something, or that you cannot, either way, *you are right*

I am going to have to start this challenge next week or so because my bill is mid month to mid month. I have been practicing though. I don't let my water warm up as long as I usually do for my showers and turn the water off while I am brushing my teeth.

So I was brushing my teeth last night and I turned the water off while I was brushing but I turned it back on to rinse. I was thinking about the water pressure and how much water must be going down the drain while I'm rinsing. I only need two two-handed scoops of water to rinse my mouth. That isn't very much but I don't turn the water off between the scoops and water rushes over the edges of my hands, etc.

I'm going to put a glass next to the sink to fill for rinsing my mouth after brushing!

I am also on a well. We have a water filter on the kitchen faucet, which we only use for filling the chinchillas water bottles. Each is supposedly a 100 gallon filter cartridge, and we replace cartriges every other week or so. I guess I could keep a tally of how much water I use for cooking and drinking. The only other thing I can think of how to measure is my showers...I close the bathtub drain and end up using between 1/2 to 1 bathtub-full per shower. I can work on keeping it down to 1/2 bathtub-full.

My August water consumption was 6800 gallons, which is a little high for us, but we've got the garden to water and it's been a fairly dry month :(

We got a rain barrel from Orschelins, but we're not sure if it's food grade plastic, (the sales people said they thought it was, but just not sure) so we're only going to use it for flower watering just in case. I'd like to get one that I know is food grade for watering the veggie plants, but they seem to be so expensive!

Well I found out today that my shower head is a little more energy effecient; it doesn't allow the full water pressure thus saves water; however, it doesn't have the pause. I told my husband I want the one that we can pause the water so we'll see.

Also, I used the eco setting on the dishwasher for the first time today. I hope it cleans as well as the normal setting. I was leary about using it because if it doesn't clean then I wasted water but we'll see tomorrow when I unload it. Fingers crossed.

Hey gang -- don't worry if the dates overlap on your bills...I won't get my next bill for another week or so yet. And the water bill won't come until after that. It will be okay -- as long as we work towards lowering the numbers! It is perfectly understandable that we have months where the numbers are higher; but at least we can keep track of what we're using!

Mel -- I am stuck on how to help you measure your water use...

I didn't know about water saving shower heads. I'm going to have to look for one of those. I feel like we use too much water. My husband is a bath man and I feel like the dishwasher and washing machine are always being used. I hope that the composting brings the water use down a little. Next year I plan on putting an outside line up for drying clothes to help with electric and now I turn off all the lights except for the room I'm in. I want those energy saver washer and dryers and my husband keeps looking for good deals. He said those are our next big purchases. Is this going to be the thread for water conservation because I want to know more ideas of what I can do to save water; I know nothing!

Hi,
I like this new challenge. I just got my water bill and it was lower than the previous month which was much too high. I am going to work on lower it more or at least keeping where it is. I have a water saver shower head in my bathroom now. It has a lever on it that you turn up to stop the water flow and down to start the flow again. The water temp stays the same so I can wet myself, turn the lever up and lather, and then turn the lever down to rinse off. The dumb part is that I have had this shower head for years and didn't know it. I remarried in 1996 and moved in with my new husband. He told me he had a water saver shower head but it didn't work. It wasn't until recently that I learned that you could attach a part to the shower head and push a button to stop the flow and push the button the other way to restart the water without waiting for it warm again. It was one of those light bulb moments. I wish he had lived long enough for me to show him how to use his fancy shower head.

Sigh. Our electric bill went UP last month due to the large number of open houses we hosted trying to sell our place.... Water is something we definitely need to work on w/ 4 of us in the house!

Ok gang -- let's continue with the monthly recycling. Post the weight of what you're saving from the landfills at the end of the month.

Something new: Last month we did electric bill. Let's try for water this month. How much water can you conserve this month? Compare to last month's bill.
