Hi,
Got my electric bill this week. Last month for a 30 day cycle my usage was 2212 units and this month for a 29 day usage was 1781 units. The daily average for August was 73.74 and daily average for Sept was 61.41. I hope it is because I am being more conservative but it has been cooler and October is starting out cooler too.

August Bill = 1050 kwh
September Bill = 1060 kwh
October Bill = 740 kwh!!! YAY!

Of course, it's been cooler this last month than usual, but I think some of our household changes are helping!

I finally got my bill, it is for August and September so I can only compare it to June and July. I am happy to say that we are 10 dollars under, so we probably used less. yay! ;)

Hi

I just joined tonight. I live in a complex and never see the water or light bill. That may change.
Even though I can't join in this one, like Greenbuilder says, there is always room for improvement.

Just changed to the new lights and have put most of my appliances on strips. The ones with switches I can turn off at night and the ones with I can unplug the whole strip.

Go Green says: that even if your appliances are turned off your are still drawing electricity, unless they are unplugged.

Good luck to all.

Just got my August Bill.
419 kWh, 187 kWh improvement from July (606), but it has been a cool August. Haven't needed the a/c much.

Also a 182 kWh improvement over last August which was only 1 degree warmer.

I guess those cfl's work. I also have been making a point of keeping the rechargers unplugged.

$5.45 to have my eletricity supplied by Wind Energy.

Hey,
Got my electric bill today. Thought I had done really good until I saw that this month was for 30 days and last month was for 33 days. So I did the math. When I compared a daily average I was a little better for August than for July. So I was able to decrease my wattage even if just a little bit. But the best part was my electric bill shows this month, last month and 1 year ago. The days for 1 year ago and this month were the same and my usage this month was down by 500 KWh from 1 year ago. The little things that I have been doing each month are beginning to show!

Hey gang -- don't worry if the dates overlap on your bills...I won't get my next bill for another week or so yet. And the water bill won't come until after that. It will be okay -- as long as we work towards lowering the numbers! It is perfectly understandable that we have months where the numbers are higher; but at least we can keep track of what we're using!

Hi Everyone,
I haven't received my electric bill yet but trash pick-up is Wednesday. I weight the recyclable bin today and it is 18 pounds. There will not be any cardboard or newspaper this month. The paper that I subscribe to is a weekly so there is only 1 per week and not enough cardboard to take to the recycle bins near my office. So that is it for recycling for August.
I have worked hard at cutting back on my electric use so I am anxious to see if I saved any kilowatts.

Today I am taking 6 pounds of paper, plastic, & aluminum to the recycling center. I'm down from last month, because I had stuff from my dad's (when I was staying there to recouperate from surgery I was able to get him to save his stuff....now that I'm not there, he isn't saving it! I'll have to work on him! ha ha)

My next electric bill doesn't come in for another couple of weeks....so it will overlap as far as monthly challenges go...my bill will probably be up as well, because I wasn't here for part of the last bill; I was at my dad's. I had turned up the A/C, unplugged just about everything (I do have a lamp on a timer), and had doors closed to unused rooms.

Greenbuilder -- I have many of those bulbs in my place, too. I really like them.

Home Depot is taking lightbulbs to recycle -- I'll see if I can find the article again, and post it on the website forum.

I prefer to use my clothes line, but we have more rain this month than we've had all year! I could use the drying rack, but I'm giving in and using the dryer today. Only 2 loads. I just want it done and over with. I'm on vacation until the 8th so I'm going to work on cleaning up my laundry area and make room for my drying racks. Gotta get ready for cold weather- it's coming soon!

Our nice weather is holding up so far - which is a good thing for the electric bill... YAY! We've closed the house up for a few afternoon/early evenings but that's it for the last almost 3 weeks :)

I wanted to be putting clothes on the line, but we've had like no wind here :( I might hang some tomorrow since I'll be home, and just tumble them when they're done drying to soften them up...

My boyfriend and I just moved into a new apt and we've made so many changes - We keep bedroom doors closed b/c we don't have airconditioning, this way we only turn on the fans we are actually using - We bought surge protectors for almost every outlet, and we turn them off when we aren't using them [like the coffee maker]. The only thing is that we have an air purifier that we keep on 24/7.. Other than that, we've brought our power bill down by 40 dollars! It's really amazing.

I wish I could get in on this one, but there's no way I can. We have to keep the lights on in two rooms 12 hours each day, for the chinchillas. And we have to keep the house between 65-71 degrees year-round for them, too.
We're in the planning stages for an outbuilding, moving them into either an extension on the pole barn, or a whole new pole barn. Then our bills will skyrocket...paying off the contractors, 24/7 heating and cooling, 12 hours of full-spectrum lights (they live with CFL's now, but we can't find 4ft. long CFL bulbs).

I checked and realized that I didn't give my totals for the July Challenge. Silly of me, since I suggested it.
Various Paper/Cardboard 26 lbs.
Plastics 6 lbs.
I doubt I'll outdo myself since I haven't been to my dad's to collect his newspaper comic sections. I love reading those.

RyAnn.

We have a prepaid electric thing with SRP. I will check out the box when I get home and see if I can figure out how much we are using as compared to last month and if I can, I'm in, if I cant, I will still try to reduce the amount of electric we use.

I'll join! Hubby and I are turning off lights to reduce heat (most of our bulbs are compact fluorescents but they still produce heat and use electricity) and we use a fan in our bedroom at night. I'm also trying hard to NOT BUY ANYTHING unless it's a basic necessity so I have less trash AND fewer recyclables!

Hi,
Locie1 is in on this one too. I am total electric and on a budget plan with the electric company. I just received my bill and it lists my usage for the month, previous month and previous year. I was a little upset with my bill as the usage for the past month was lots higher than previous month but then here in the drough-stricken south it has been hot. I am glad I only had to pay my budget plan amount! And August is looking like another scorcher!. I did start raising the temp as I leave for work. I just may leave it at there instead of lower it when I get home.

And I will continue to weight my recyclables and compost this time. Maybe I will get the silver this month.

I have my power bill on a budget plan, so NSPower budgets the cost for the year based ont he previous year's consumption. We just had our budget adjusted for the next year as it's our anniversary time. We droped from $70/mth to $63/mth. That's $84 savings over the year. I'd have to say that is because of a few major things:
-we have all CFL bulbs in the house.
-We shut the computer down when not using it.
-We got rid of an old refrigerator we had in the basement and replaced it with an Energy Star bar fridge.
- We use the clothes line or drying racks 98% of the time.
- The rest of the appliances are Energy Star rated as well.

I'll check the kilowatts we use during August & compare to last month once the bill is issued.

Only I can change my life. No one can do it for me.

It's supported by the citizens action coalition in Indiana. It's 5, 1-1/2 hour classes. Covers step by step things we can do personally, for the house, at work, community wide, and How to get others involved. The goal is for everyone in the class to cut their carbon footprint by 5000 lbs a year or more.
Also got some freebies like a CFL bulb, programable thermostat, resusable shopping bag. This week we are suppose to get kits that include a low flow shower head, insulators for wall sockets and some other items.
We are also doing show & tel for our class this week. I've been asked to bring in pictures of my chickens I recently got.
Also lots of great information on where to recycle various items as Indiana has no required recycling & actually charge you if they pick it up for you.

Diane -- do you know where the meter is at your building? Maybe you could read the numbers....but I realize you wouldn't have anything to compare it to -- can you ask the complex manager? Or maybe the electric company?

Crystalwolf -- this is the hottest month for me, too. But every little bit helps, like keeping the blinds closed during the day to keep the heat out! :)

Great timing, I just got my bill for this month.... we used 1050 kwh from 6/25 - 7/25. Unfortunately we are now in the hottest month of the year for cooling costs here in Nebraska. But, I could use a smaller utility bill for next month - so I'll kick the family in the rear.

Cool idea! Too bad I can't participate. Our electric is included in our rent so we have no way of knowing how much we use a month.

That's a very cool idea. IT will prove interesting to see how much of a difference there is.

Well I don't see why it can't be a running total...maybe even go through December...and see who uses the least amount! Of course, I live alone...so it will be slightly easier for me. On the other hand, the building I live in was built in the dark ages, so there aren't really any 'energy saving' appliances.....

Glad you like it though...I had a hard time trying to think of something we could all do!

OOOH!! What a great idea, I so wish I could join! I will have to do it in Sept/Oct though because I am going away for the whole month and my bill should be next to nothing!

I hope everyone else gets involved though! Nothing better than saving money and the earth!

GO FOR IT EVERYONE!!! I promise to do it when I get back!

Plan to succeed. If you really want to win, you have to have a plan and stick to it. You also have to be able to adapt your plan and keep it dynamic. Gotta have a PLAN.

Okay -- let's try something different. You're gonna need your electric bill from last month!

You are challenged to reduce the consumption of electricity in your home for the month of August! (sorry I'm a few days late with this!)

This could be difficult due to the different dates that the bills come out & are due. BUT -- you can still compare the wattage from month to month.

So TURN OFF THE LIGHTS! TURN UP THE THERMOSTAT AT NIGHT AND/OR WHEN YOU'RE AWAY (one degree for every day you're gone is the suggestion I use)

Report back here when your bill comes in, and post the wattage you used last bill, and this bill.

Also -- a second challenge is to continue to weigh your recyclables -- I'm pretty sure you can catch my total from last month...but can you catch CanadianFilly? Greenbuilder? Lociel?
