Congratulations everyone!

This was a great challenge. I did not measure it, since my scale decided not to cooperate, but I am pretty sure I did a good job myself, and seeing everyone`s results is really encouraging!

Thank you team!

Congratulations Everyone!!

I am glad I took part in this challenge. Even though my pounds were little, but then there was only one person in the household, I did get some ideas from the others. Like I could have weighted my compost bucket every week when I dumped it in the big compost barrel. I eat a lot of fresh fruits and veggies and hopefully next year I can grow more and buy less at the store.

emoticon The gold goes to: Greenbuilder! For recycling 132 pounds of materials in the month of July!

emoticon The silver goes to: Canadian Filly! For recycling 69.5 pounds!

emoticon (pretend it's bronze!) the Bronze goes to: Lociel! For recycling 40 pounds!

emoticon Honorable Mention, in 4th place -- is ME! (LOL) with a whopping 13 pounds recycled.

No one else reported results to me.

emoticon Green Sparkers!! This gives us a grand total of 254.5 pounds of materials saved from the landfills!!! emoticon ((That was measured and reported))

I'm really sorry about this... both times the bins were full this month DH took them to the recycling center before I got a chance to try and weigh them! I guess this is one time I wish I would have had to nag him - then I would have known when he was taking them...LOL

On the bright side, we FILLED, more like stuffed (with plastic and cardboard smashed), our 3 recycle bins (33 gal each) twice each before the end of the month - and that doesn't include aluminum cans. But, I'm not sure how much they weighed.

Paper pickup today

6 lbs corrugated.
8 lbs paper.

Green Dimes is starting to make an impact when I look how much paper my neighbors are putting out every other week. My wife still has an additions to gossip magazines, along with the remaining junk mail that gets through is our main source of recycled paper.

As far as cardboard, I recycle everything from Toilet paper cores to food packaging and cereal boxes.

Hi,
Tomorrow is trash pick-up day and my recyclable bin is full. It is 14 pounds. Doesn't sound like a lot but plastic is very light which is the bulk of the items. The newspapers and magazines will go another day. Don't have any plastic bags to recycle. That will be all of the plastic, cans and glass for this month. One person doesn't generate a lot.

I wasn't able to get my materials to register on the scale by themselves. So I weighed myself first, then picked up the bags of stuff I'm taking to the center. So I have a total of everything -- which doesn't seem to add up to much. But I do have more in my truck -- I'm just not strong enough to close my tailgate yet....so I can't get it out just yet.

Paper, plastic bags, aluminum, & plastic containers for July 16th = 2 pounds.

Hehe, yeap, I`m confused too... I`ll do some research on the average weight of a household waste yearly or monthly and start from there :)

it goes monthly on here.....

Andy --
I tried to start with a team goal of recycling aluminum -- but since everyone's will be different, I wasn't sure what number values to put in the boxes. All of those you listed, except for glass, are fairly light, too.

I like the idea of being able to watch it grow, but am not sure how to 'write it up' so to speak.

That`s a good idea!
So how about we make 4 goals

Recycle paper
Recycle metals
Recycle plastics
Recycle glass

We could set a total goal of 1000 pounds for each for the team for the year... (or something, I don`t know how much this stuff actually weights)

Any other thoughts to refine this?

I read with delight that someone else is recycling a relatives trash. My DD lives in a condo complex that just has a huge dumpster. She makes sure to save her recyclables and bring them to our house and we add them to our bins to take to the recyclers when we go.

Sure - those are great ideas...I'd probably have to do the same thing, as I just have a bathroom scale, too!

Our efforts are to keep as much as possible OUT of the landfills, so please don't post those results here if you are weighing that. We want our totals to be of items kept OUT of the landfills. I'm going to be doing aluminum, plastic, and newspaper. I don't think I'll be able to weigh the plastic bags, even though I recycle them, too.

I will also be counting my dad's stuff in my totals, too. We don't live together, but he has been saving his cans & newspaper for me. When I go home, I'll take it with me & recycle it.

Am so excited to see your totals! Remember, you can post your results when it's convenient for you -- mabye 'weigh in' before you drop off your recycling stuff. Just make sure you do it before July 31st! LOL

This sounds like a great Idea. I recycle every Week and I always have at least two containers full. Having two kids makes us go through a lot of stuff and I recycle whatever I can. It has already made me change the way I buy stuff too, for instance instead of buying the packs of little individual applesauce (the containers are not recyclable) I buy one big glass jar. So you can definitely count me in. emoticon

And will you succeed?

I gave it a try, since I use biodegradable plastic bags to put cans and such in anyways.

Did not work... I have a small apartment and have to get rid of stuff quickly, so one full bag did not make it to the 5 kgs minimum that the scale requires to activate.

What I`ll do instead is count how many cans and bottles go in, it won`t be weight but at least I will be participating somehow! I don`t buy newspapers or such and most of my recycle paper is cereal boxes, so doubt it will be over 5kgs as well, but I`ll come up with something.

:D

Starts July 1st. Don't forget to weigh your plastic bin EMPTY first....because that will skew your results later. Since it's just me, and I have to transport my stuff, I just use plastic bags (which I then recycle). Weigh the empty bin, then weigh your stuff in the bin. Subtract the weight of your bin, so we're getting true results of just the materials.

You can wait to post your results until July 31st, or do it every week...I'll keep track somehow...plus it'll still be here on the thread.

ANDY -- can you just weigh the materials, without the can?? Or put the stuff in a cloth bag, and weigh it??

Haha, thanks for the scale!

I have one, but it is digital and with sensors for fat% detection, so I can`t really put a garbage bin on it, or it could damage them and then I would get crazy reads (and be very happy or very mad!) lol

Hi,
Count me in. I take my recycle bin in when it gets full. With just one person in my household sometimes it takes me 4 weeks to fill it up. So when do we start? Today or July 1.

Okay all, here's the scoop. Keep a running total of the weight of your recycled materials for the month: cans, plastic, paper -- whatever you recycle. Don't forget to subtract the weight of the container you keep your stuff in!

You can post your results weekly, if you want -- or when you take your stuff to the recycling center. I'll do my best to keep a spread sheet of participating members.

At the end of the month, we'll post a grand total of what we saved from the landfills!

Thanks to one of our new members, RyAnn, for this fabulous idea!!!
