I ordered myself the EA Sports Active last night! Yay! I enjoy the wii fit but I do want options going into the winter months when I have to put my bike away.

Reply to WM_STAR on the bands for EA Sports Active. I use my band I got from Walk Away The Pounds by Leslie Sansone. I really like her band, it's long enough and very good quality. You can order the band on her website.

I love the hooping! It was so much more of a work out than I originally thought it would be...

Wanted to share a link with everyone: wiifitroutines.com/2009/01/07/30-minute-wi i-fit-abs-workout/. Some of us have wanted a better ab workout that EASA just doesn't have, so I figured I'd haul out my Wii Fit twice a week or so to focus on good ab exercises there. This routine is a great one for an ab workout on the Fit - I did my EASA workout first, then I did this on the Fit in reverse (since my HR was already up, I started with hooping and worked backwards to yoga).

After doing a couple workouts with the wireless nunchuck, I have to give a 100O% recommendation for this option. It is so liberating and enables me to do each exercise focusing on the exercise and my range, rather than the length of the cord. As another big bonus, no more whacking myself in the head with the cord!!! A nice $20 add on.

I have some Tae-Bo bands that came with the Tae-Bo boot camp and they would work, but the handles are too bulky to hold the Wii Remote and Nunchuck, but I haven't tried to figure out a good way to hold them.
I have a hard time with the jump lunges and I think I am just going to skip those when they come up. They hurt me and I can't get into a deep enough lunge.
Today is my last challenge of the 30-day challenge and I have had it set on the medium setting. I am going to start it again using the hard setting and see where that takes me.
Good luck for all of you on your journey!!

I LOVE my Active. It keeps me going with (mostly) stuff I don't mind doing. Fast kick-ups is a waste to me. I'm better off just running in place. The jump lunges and anything with jumping hurts my feet. Overweight people can't jump that easily. I love all the sports that it includes. I now long for actually PLAYING those sports. *sigh* I take Aleve everyday because my knees kill no matter what I do, so it makes it a little easier for me to do a little more and push myself a little harder.
I'm doing the 30-day and adding another 30 minutes after it to burn a few extra calories. I'll be needing to pick up new bands soon as I have a tiny tear in mine.
Those aren't horns, that's my halo infrastucture.

I had an old set of fitness bands that I use. They are the tubing type. They work really great. I did 30 minutes of the hard workout yesterday, my knees have bothered me ever since. So I may have to take out some of the squats the next time.

Hi, everyone! I've been doing the EA Sports Active for almost a month, but I haven't finished the 30-day challenge yet - I also attend a water aerobics class twice a week, so I don't necessarily get in all the Wii workouts they recommend. I have some questions for the gang and some comments I wanted to share.
1 - What type/brand of fitness band have you bought if you got something to replace the band that came with the game? I have a set of pilates bands, but they're too short to even do the bent-over rows, much less the overhead press.
2 - For those using HRMs to track your calories instead of using what the game tells you - do you feel like your HRM is overestimating your calories burned? I definitely do, and some research on the internet on HRMs revealed that the vast majority of brands do overestimate that number by about 20-30%, on purpose because it helps them get more loyal customers to their brand. I wore my HRM for a 24-hour period when I was NOT working out that day just to get a baseline for myself, and then compared that with what several online calculators said I should be burning in a day based on my activity level (on a no-workout day), age, weight and height. I know it's not exactly acurate, but it's as close as I can get - my HRM said I burned 2900 in 24 hours with no workout, and my average of the online info pointed to about 2200. So now I'm taking the calories burned my HRM gives me during a workout and multiplying it by 76%, and that definitely feels like a more realistic number (though still more than what the game says I burned).
3 - Has anyone tried alternative exercises for the lunges? The lunges are killing my knees, so I started using a high step to do step-ups instead (www.fitsugar.com/3714275), and it's much easier on my knees and the game still reads it as though I'm doing lunges. I have to skip the lunge jumps, though - I haven't figured out an alternative to those, and they hurt me.
4 - How about the fast kick-ups? I've had to start skipping those. I can do them, and the game recognized that I'm doing them, but they KILL my shins. Anyone else had the same problem, or figured out an alternative?
5 - When I finish the 30-day challenge, I think I'm going to set up about 10-20 custom workouts and use those in rotation instead of the preset ones just so I can make sure I get the length of time I want without the exercises that hurt me. Anyone want to share their custom workouts so we can copy you? :)
6 - How about core exercises? I'm working on remembering to keep my abs and my tush tight during everything, especially the arm-strengthening work, but what does everyone else do about working their core?
And so hopefully that's all going to spark (hee-hee) some good discussion! Thanks, all!

I just started a new 30 day challenge. I am doing the hard workouts. My feedback after the workout was that I should try a harder workout next time. I did 30 minutes and burned 282 calories. I guess that means I am getting fit.... Before the workout I did 30 minutes of weight training with 8 pound weights. After the hard workout I did 36 minutes with the Wii fit. Now if I can just get those darn calories under control, I will be alright.

I am only 7 work outs in, but am going to buy a wireless nunchuck after work today. So many of the exercises are inhibited by the wire. I just needed the excuse! LOL!!!

I am about 4 workouts away from completing my first 30 day challenge. I am not sure if I've lost much weight, but with all the changes I have made over the last few months, I have seen a huge change. I am also walking about 3-4 miles a day with a 5-6 mile on Saturdays. Once I finish this 30 day challenge, I am going to move onto the 30 day challenge with the hard setting. I'm loving it!!!

Wow....Im jealous of those with losses :)
I know I am working hard, got the sore muscles to prove it. I accept my thyroid issues and still having the various symptoms even if my lab numbers are "in normal ranges so I am fine". But I still get jealous seeing the results others get when I stay the same.
But I do have to say I think I may have dropped a few pounds (with regular fluctuations..im always hesitant to claim it) after the past month of walking the dogs in the morning, on top of the 30 day challenges, and the past 2 weeks Ive been walking an additional 2.3 miles in the evening with my husband and the pups 4 days a week (the daily morning walks are 1.3, 1.75, 2, 2.3 miles depending on the route around the neighborhood). We've even recently discussed adding a few more streets to our evening walk once it cooled down some. The pups comfort (boston terriers are a short nosed breed that dont do well in hot weather)is the main factor in increasing the walk.

Hi everyone,
It's nice to see everyone again as well as all the new comers! This will be my THRID 30 Day Challenge! First month went well up until the last two weeks and I slacked off. I regreted it. However, I picked up just a few days into July and I've actually got one more day to finish the 30 Days but I'll go ahead and count it as the first day of Aug. When I first started EA ACTIVE in June my starting weight was 189. Since then I'm down to 180 as of today! So I've lost another half pound since last week. I've only got 5lbs to go to reach my FINAL GOAL. So here is my current Starting Weight as of today and my workout:
SW: 180
AUGUST 1st EA ACTIVE Workout
30 Day Challenge Workout: Hard
01) Standing Twists 02) Upright Rows 03) Bent Over Rows 04) Alternating Bicep Curls 05) Alternating Triceps Kickbacks 06) Targets & Heavy Bag 2 07) Upright Tows 08) Bent Over Rows 09) Alternating Bicep Curls 10) Alternating Triceps Kickbacks 11) Back, Front & Mid Court 12) Upright Rows 13) Bent Over Rows

I am still recovering from a lower back injury (car accident in May) and have to pull out the "rowing" type exercises. I'm about 95%, but not ready to tempt fate with all of the exercises given to me. I was okay with the lunges though!

You were smart to take out the lunges. I didn't and I suffered for a WEEK. I continued to exercise but I didn't do lunges. I think next week I am maybe going to add 1 or so and build up. Those suckers HURT.

My EA Active came yesterday and I did the 30 minute easy workout after removing the lunges. How do you connect the included band to the handles? I used a regular exercise band and it worked. Learned that the Numchuck needs to be held "right side up" on the bicep curls, which it wouldn't register at all on the left. The character who explains the moves is pretty lifelike. Is she human or an excellent animation?

Just got EA Active and am enjoying learning it. It's been pretty challenging, but have been having some troubles with the leg strap... Thinking I may actually sew a little pocket onto the front of my bike shorts (not like I wear them outdoors anyways!) so that I don't have to worry about the strap popping off or falling down. It's been super hot here, so it's hard to say how hard it was working me and how much of my sweat had to do wiht the fact that we're breaking weather records and have no a/cond at home. Looking forward to making a few custom work outs. That should be pretty fun!

Where can I find out information about the new expansion that is coming out with the Wii? Is it the Wii Fit or the EA Sports Active game?

Holding both remotes is something the game is picky about. Even if you hold the wiimote backards or upside down, it knows and it won't register. I've caught myself doing this many times and I'm a VET at this game, but even I make these kind of brainfart mistakes all the time. Maybe with the expansion coming out later this year and with the Wii-Motion Plus they can get the few bugs worked out that are in the current version! I'm looking forward to it!!
Thanks everyone for your comments! I had a much better workout trying all your suggestions. Thanks again!

The numchuck and remote have a sensor in them and if you don't move the numchuck or remote quick enough it can't tell you have moved the thing. I have found that sometimes I need to snap my wrist on some of the exercises to get the movement to register. If I move too slowly it won't register some of the moves.
Also, as mentioned, watch which way you are pointing the remote. Go over the "how to" video and study the remote positioning.

yes, it could be tricky sometimes. I had to really watch to see how she was holding them too. When it wasn't registering my movements, I was holding them the wrong way. At times, it still doesn't register but it doesn't happen very often, and when it does, I just look to see how I'm holding it, and correct it.

You have to sometimes point the remote and numbchuck up or down for it to register. It tells you that in the instructions. It took me a while to get that in my head and if you watch her hands you can see which way she is pointing them (the instructor).

Maybe, you can go in and delete the ones that use the resistance bands? I like making my own custom workouts based on what I want to do.

ok, I give up! I cannot get any of the exercises that require the resistence band to register so I have to skip them! It is so frustrating. any suggestions? I do sparkpeople strength exercises in replace of Wii.

I bought it on Monday the 20th and have been using it every night, except the night off. I tried the first EASY exercise for 20 minutes. OMG I thought I was going to die. By the time I got to the KICKBACKS I couldn't even move my legs. My thighs are FINALLY not hurting hardly at all. I had a hard time walking up steps, down steps, sitting and then standing. I made my own program and that is probably about 40 minutes but it has boxing (which I REALLY LOVE), basketball, baseball and tennis. I haven't found the kickboxing yet but it's in there somewhere. So NO LUNGES FOR ME. I really love this it is so much fun and I look forward to doing it.

This is just my guess.
I would think it would still be reasonably accurate. Its still your heart rate whither artificially there or not. I recall one weight loss medicine my doctor talked to me about where it was suppose to increase your heart rate a bit to cause an increase in calories burned through the day.
Doing a quick search on the Polar site, I found this...which shows if you do have high blood pressure (ignoring accuracy for calories burned) it may be a good idea to wear a heart rate monitor while exercising for your safety.
Question here, if you have high blood pressure and on medication for it, how accurate would the heart rate monitor be? Doesn't your medication affect your heart rate lowering your blood pressure? I was just wondering before I spent money on one when it really wouldn't be accurate.
I personally use a heart rate monitor and manually enter the time and calories burned. But if I didnt have one, Id probably use one of the circuit training options.

Finished the first 2 days on hard, and Im not sure how to blog them. I had planned on doing it like I had with my previous ones, with showing the exercise list and comparing how many reps/laps it was for easy versus medium versus hard. The easy and medium routines were identical except for the reps and laps.
Now the hard one is just trying to screw with my data plans. Its similar workouts, but not the same.
Workout 1 on easy/medium had 16 exercises and were WBB days (if you were using it). Workout 1 on hard did not use the WBB (even though it was suppose to be a wbb day accordign to the intro and the little green square) and had 18 exercises with some additions and some changes on the track items (easy/medium had a run where the hard had a kick up). So I thought ok...it makes sense to add a couple more exercises...
Workout 2 on easy/medium had 18 exercises and did not use the WBB. So maybe on hard there would be 20 exercises? Nope, hard had 15 and it used the WBB.
So trying to think of a way to do the comparisons. Maybe just do the easy/medium together and then the hard after it seperately.

The only "handed" items are the baseball and tennis exercises which go by pretty quick. And even with those, the exercise is in the swing, not the actual accuracy. Guestimating by how I would feel to try it with my left hand, I dont think it really makes a difference in the scope of the exercise. So for the preset workouts themselves, it really doesnt matter in the long run.
The issue I have with it is that its uneven. Both hand, right hand, but no left hand exercises. As I mentioned, it really doesnt matter with the balanced workouts, but if you were to make up your own workout of all tennis/baseball because you enjoyed those games....you would get a workout on your right arm, but zip on your left.
Thats what I like about the Gold's Gym. I dont think they ask you either if you are left or right handed, but it doesnt matter. It makes you do half of the boxing routine with the right leading and then half with the left leading so you get a balanced workout.

I've been thinking about buying EA Sports Active, but I'm left-handed and have read that it doesn't support a configuration option for handedness. Is anyone here who has the game a lefty? Does the game have activities that are overly biased against left-handed people? I don't want to waste money on a workout game that I can't use effectively.

Going to start the 3rd challenge tomorrow. Finished easy and medium. Considering doing the easy ones again along side the hard, just to get the numbers for comparison without them being thrown off like they were the first time around by watching the videos or getting use to holding the remotes properly.
I have some tubing I was thinking of trying out. It came in a GoFit ? exercise kit. There are 3 different tension sets of tubing, and they end in hooks to hook them onto the handles. Ive been wondering if the hooks would work on the handles that came with the EA Active game, since the handles that came with the tubing are the big round ones that would be difficult to use with the wii remotes.

I started using a heavier resistance cord when I first started the 30 day challenge. The heavier cord gave me a much better workout than the band that came with the EA Sports. Today I started my second 30 day challenge. I love the EA Active. I usually do 2 workouts a day. One in the challenge and one in the preset workout.

Got mine in today.
I did 119 calories in 20 minutes. Made me sweat.
I don't like the resistance band. It's a little too weak for me. But I have heard of others doubling it up. I may do that. I have another leg pad and resistance band coming for a doubles session with the wife, so I may use 2 bands, or I have even heard a suggestion of just getting a different resistance band altogether.
All-in-all it seems like a good program. Very friendly trainer too. Nice touch.

I am on Day 9 of the 30 day challenge and this game is GREAT. I was sore for the first 3 days, but now it isn't to bad. I also am using the balance board, which is fun. There is no doubt I will looking into the expansion pack that will be coming out.

I got this game yesterday and after 15 minutes was pretty wore out. I think it will be a great tool.

Wow. No updates since the release?
I bought this on eBay for $55 with shipping included. Just waiting for it to come in.
Anything worth mentioning about this game on this thread?

Me too Jackie. I bought the Jillian game and didn't open it for over 5 months...have to keep it now. Did you read about the MotionPlus attachment for the Wiimote? I'm hoping that it helps recognize the motions for the Jillian game.

Has anyone tried out this game yet, I jumped on the Jillian Michaels bandwagon and got burned so I'm waiting on this one.

I am really looking forward to this one. I think the fact that Oprah's trainer helped design the workouts is awesome!

well, for some examples, EA does all the yearly sports games like Madden.

What other EA games are there? I guess I don't have any of those ones. I am getting worried. I heard before I had the Wii Fit that Jillians was bad and was bummed to hear it. Cuz I really wanted it. But won't get it now since there are so many negative comments online and here at SP.

I also pre-ordered it and really truly am hoping that it does not bomb like Jillian Michael's did. I love my WiiFit and My Fitness Coach and I am hoping that adding EA Active will happily add to the mix!!
(We do have a few EA games but they are very frustrating to play and I have noticed my son seems to stay away from them.)

sorry, I'm on the wall for this one just because of who makes it--I don't like any EA games...except maybe one that we have on Xbox (one of the downloaded "arcade" games--not even a full game)--they just haven't made anything that would appeal to me. So, I'm always going to be playing the bad guy on this one--and hoping it isn't like the Jillian Michaels (where most people can't stand it).
So, it's nothing personal when I complain about this game...it's just the stigma of the name "EA Sports".
(and so far my day's been pretty good--haven't done much of anything other than eating and taking care of the kiddo.)

well, I was thinking that some of the "games" in it might be similar...but the controls I think will be different, since it has you put a hip strap on to hold the nunchuck controller.
That's the part I'm still not sure about.

I guess I should have refrased that. It will be quite the popular item when it comes out. We may have a hard time finding in stores. Sorry for the confusion. It shouldn't be anything like the fit in the other sense.

not sure on how much it will be like Wii Fit, though...it should be interesting.
But this one doesn't come out till May.

Saturday I went to the mall and was walking around. Went into the game store and bought the Gold's Gym and was talking to the guys at the register and they are saying that this EA Sports Active will be like the Wii Fit. Can't get it. So I preordered mine. Excited that I will have it in May and not have to wait til it is in again.

there are places to get it slightly cheaper, but I was just listing the "Manufacture's Suggested Retail Price"...that's the price that the game company suggests it being sold at and you shouldn't have to pay more than that. (just fyi)
