Ok, I finally got a few minutes to type this out :)
Cost: 1000 WiiPoints ($10)
Type of game: Nintendo calls it Action, I call it fitness :)
Would Recommend for: whole family
The best way I can think to describe Helix is like Dance Dance Revolution, but with your upper body instead of lower body. You hold one Wii remote in each hand (so you need 2), and as music plays your goal is to match the "dance moves" of the robot on the screen. (These moves remind me a little more of aerobics moves than dance moves, but they are still fun and timed to the music). The music that plays is from independent musicians (ie. probably not songs you're familiar with) and definitely has a bit of a techno slant to it (although I would not consider myself a techno fan, I enjoyed most of it.) There are 26 songs available, most of them "unlocked" by completing a certain number of songs. I have about half the songs unlocked so far, and it takes 40 minutes to get through those, so there's plenty of playtime on this even if you just do each song once per workout. There are 3 difficulty levels, Easy, Medium, and Hard (the only differences between levels being the speed and amount of movements; the same basic movements are used in each level, making it easier to learn.) I find the Easy level to be a decent workout, and when I play the Medium level, it is definitely a good cardio workout for me (I also kind of bounce from side to side to add a little more movement and exercise). I imagine you could even incorporate wrist weights if you wanted a harder workout. The other thing I really like about this game is it has that "just one more time" factor, especially when unlocking songs, that makes me keep playing even when I tell myself I'll just play for 10 minutes.
It can take a little while to adjust to watching the robot do a move and having to wait a couple seconds before you do it, but once you adjust, it's not as hard as it seems.
I would like to see more of a song variety, (ie. songs I've heard of and can sing along to), but considering that would probably make it more expensive, it's really not that big of a deal to me. (The developers have said on their forum that Helix 2 will have a little different music, more like that on Dance Dance Revolution, but as far as I know, there's no release date set for it yet.)
All in all, I'm really glad I found this game, because I was kind of bummed I don't really have room to use the WiiFit in the room I have the Wii in. Let me know if you have any questions about Helix; I'd be happy to answer them!
