I recommend getting on a bike a few times before doing a bigger trip, because you'll feel more comfortable knowing you still remember how, but also, to get body parts used to it again. We did a bike trip in Ireland, and by the second or third day, I was regretting not bringing my cushy bike seat!
I've actually just told my best friend that we are gonna make a biking trip as soon as school is over, because its sounds a lot of fun. But i think i should practice a bit before, along the danube or smt. Cuz i haven't been on a bike for 10 years or so, considering that i am only 19, that's a lot. I hope its true that its impossible to forget how to bike .
Hi, Alice and Heidi! Sorry for my delay in replying.
Yes, indeed, there are many opportunities for wine-biking in the Wachau! I even have a friend who leads bike tours like these and has all the connections to make a great trip. If you are interested, I can put you in touch with her. My husband has even designed an amateur trip like this for some American relatives who visited a few years back, so it's even possible to do it on your own. From Vienna, we took a train to Krems and then a boat on the Danube to Spitz. At Spitz, you can rent bikes and ride them back to Krems, where they collect them. Or, if you have your own, you can just go out to Krems with your bike.
Alice, I have been pretty lazy about exercise lately, as I am working on my dissertation and find every reason in the world to pressure myself into research and writing and NOT exercising. This must change, and so my Augarten walks were the first start to getting outside on a regular basis. I actually started a "Couch to 10K" program today (!!) and want to get back into running, at least a bit. A friend recently said one needs to get out and moving in a forward direction -- and so I am trying!!
Hope everyone is happy and healthy today! lg, Betsy
St Anton is great for skiing (although we didn't have a stellar year for snow this year). If you come again, you'll have to let me know!!!
Yes, wine biking is a lot of fun. I have no idea about doing it in the Wachau, but I would think that it is possible anywhere there is wine tasting? We've done it outside of Epernay, France (the champagne region), and Bordeaux, France, but also in Stuttgart, Germany, as we visited some friends there. If we're going somewhere to a wine region, I look up to see if there are several wineries that offer tastings. If you go by car, someone has to stay sober to drive (or you have to hire a driver). If you go by foot, it would take forever to go from one to the next. Bikes are perfect. :)
Yes, I also do white-water kayaking. I'm just waiting for it to get a bit warmer :). Kayaking is a lot of fun and good exercise. I don't know how it would be in the Donau, but I would guess that's where they teach you some skills, and then go to a different river for the fun part? If you tell me the name of the school or give me a website to look at, I could check it out for you. Or, just go and ask them what they are all about. We do have some pretty good rivers here in the mountains :).
thats sounds amazing :) I have been to st Anton a couple of times, but only in the winter. Its really nice for skiing. Wine biking really sounds like fun. I wonder if thats possible to do like somewhere in the Wachau. Its not far from Vienna, but I don't think its close enough for a day trip. Do you know anything about that?
And do you also do white-water kayaking? Cuz I have a kayaking school near by and I've always wanted to try. But to my mind doing it in the Donau is just boring and very strenous if you do it against the flow. I guess you have more exciting rivers near by.
I'm in St Anton, so a bit cold in the evenings, but if it doesn't rain, there are plenty of opportunities for hiking and biking. My husband loves white-water kayaking. He and a buddy have been going a lot, but it is still too cold for me. We don't have a car, so I walk a lot, but hope to do some hiking this summer. We like to pack up a picnic and mountain bike to a lake, and are looking forward to some overnights in mountain huts this year. Also, we love to go wine biking - where we bike through a wine region and taste wine at the wineries. Obviously, that doesn't happen in our town, but we've done it a few places in Europe.
Hi, Alice! I am having some troubles with motivation, too, despite the absolutely perfect weather! I did make it to the Augarten a couple times this week for a long walk with podcasts...are you in Vienna? ~Betsy
if you have been outside in the past few days than you must know that the summer has finally arrived in Austria. But I kinda have not been able to make myself go and do some outside sports despite the nice weather. So to motivate myself and all of you as well, I suggest that we post here who is doing what kinds of outside sports.
Looking forward to reading many motivating posts ;)
