The bonus points can be used to skip states. You have to have the entire amount needed for the state. For example, if you needed 10 hours to get to the next state, then you would need to use 10 bonus points.
You can't split the points and exercise time towards a state. So, that same example, you need 20 hours to get to the next state and you only have 10 bonus points. You can't exercise for 10 hours and then use your 10 points.
