I've been back in the pool now for 3 weeks. Am slowly working back up to my regular time, distance and laps. I think it will only be another week or so before I am back to where I was before my pool shut down for the 3 1/2 months this summer. I am not sure if what I post on my exercise logs gets counted here or if I need to do something more so that what I am swimming is logged and counted towards our challenges. Gotta go for now, need to pack my pool gear and head on over to the pool for my swim. hugs to all, Cheryl

Hi! It is so nice to meet someone on here:) My pool was closed over the summer for almost 3 weeks and it was terrible!!! It was rough getting back to where I was before, and I really missed it! I tried other exercise but swimming is just perfect for me and nothing else comes close:) I look forward to hearing from you again soon.

Kelly

Hi there Kelly, I am a regular lap swimmer myself, Unfortunately my pool was shut down for major upgrades and repairs from early July thru just a couple weeks ago and I am only now starting to rebuild my times and endurances. I am back up to about 43 minutes doing 32 short laps. Welcome to this group Kelly.

I am new to this team. I started swimming in May and it is the best thing that I have ever done for myself! I am not sure how to do the challenges though. Could someone tell me how to do this? I swim at least 5 days a week for 50 minutes or so, usually about 40-45 lengths (25 meter pool length). I need something to motivate me again. I have been in a rut for awhile:) I am looking forward to this team!!!

Sincerely,
Kelly

This looks like so much fun! But I can see that most of the posts are dated 2008.... Is there still some action on this team? Any challenge currently on? X Indu

I wanna do thisss... haha.
I swim about 4 miles a week right now, but hopefully this challenge will motivate me to swim more than that.... haha.

I want to strive for 20 miles in three weeks. That's a little under a mile a day. I'm thinking that is very doable.

Hi Cheryl, I can see your post so I think you've joined correctly. There isn't much action on this team at this time, but I'd love it if we could get something started. I just completed a Chesapeake Bay Challenge but I was the only one. Red Port is also doing a challenge across Lake Champlain. Do you have something in mind? Welcome aboard, Laura

Hi all, I'm not sure if I successfully joined this team or not, but since I swim laps on the average of 3 miles a week, I figured that this would be a great place for me to participate. Where and how do I add my laps/miles?? hugs from Cheryl

Hi
I am Chiara and new to this challenge. But I love to swim... I swim 4-5 days a week for an hour to 90 min each time.

I don't really count my distance since I am in a lap pool but I will start. Today I did ... just under a mile like .8 in an hour.

Hi everyone, I'm brand new to the team. Thank you Mark for inviting me. This challenge sounds like a lot of fun, and perfect for me since I swim more than anything else. Looks, like you guys have been at this one for a while, I'll post my distance for this week, which is 2.84 miles.

Yay! I finally got in the pool today! I just thought I'd give all you seasoned swimmers a head start in this Mobile Bay swim. LOL (y'all are gonna kick my butt!)

I swim only about 50 min on Fridays b/c I'm in the pool w/ my seniors in their AquaFit class... but I got a good 1250m in! Woo-Hoo!! Only 30,750m (615 laps, if my math is right) to go!!

Nancy's Mobile Bay Progress:
0 + 1250 = 1250
30,750m to go!

Swim on!!

Hey guys,

Sorry I have been MIA. I have an urinary infection and it sucks! my back hurts a lot and I can't do anything too hard on my self, such as swimming... Good thing is I got a doctors order to skip work for 2 days :P.

I'm sorry I can't comment on the other posts, I did read them but it hurts to sit here for so long. I'll try and log in tomorrow as I won't be at work. Thanks everyone for joining us in this new challenge.

back in the pool tomorrow for me. Hubby has been on call for 4 days and I prefer not to take the kids to the gym with me. We start tomorrow right? I will definitely have to swim the extra yardage so I can split my swims with the Amazon Challenge I already started. WOOHOO!!

Woohoo Nancy! finally got back in the water!! and yes, it feels like a year when you don't swim for a month!! Great job for making it to one mile!! Remember when you first started?? you thought a mile was NOT going to happen and look at you now ;).

Today I will be fantasy swimming, that is swim in my head and pretend I can feel the water touch my face... sucks to not be able to swim again!! Stupid ear and nose doctors with their weird hour appointments! :P

Oh, it's *NEXT* Monday! Well, good! I had a good warm-up swim today!

That's right! Guess who got back into the pool tonight!! Uh-huh! (oww)

It was not my strongest mile, nor my prettiest mile, but it was a mile. I think I'm gonna feel my shoulders tomorrow. It's been, what, something like 2 mos. since I've been in the pool? Bad Grancy!

Oh, has it been only 1 mo? (12/14) Geez, seems like a year!

ROFL, ok, now I don't know what to do. I already removed my logged miles, and was ready to post todays swim as my start. But the official start is NEXT Monday? So... what to do, hmmm. Think I'll go back to the English Channel where I'm logging miles for the second time. A week from today, we start the MBC, right?

Swim on!

Hey Guys!

Juanita, you can start whenever you want to or feel ready for it. It was supposed to start today but some folks started counting earlier so it is ok... I will start counting next week so we can start all together, at least most of us will.

Bine, get well soon girl!!

Yeah, I figured out that one mile is equal to about 1750 yds, which is 3 laps more than in meters (1600). I can easily add those few laps to my workouts. Ever since I swam competitively I've been ingrained with meter purism. It's just a hard prejudice to break, but I am working on it. LOL Thanks!

I agree with Emily, there's almost no difference between 1 meter and 1 yard. In fact, 1 meter is equal to 1.09 yards.... You can always "translate" your yards to meters.

The difference between a meter pool and a yard pool is minimal. You will be just fine swimmming in a yard pool. I work out in one. :)

I did my first mile today! I bought a 30 visit pass at the pool which should last me at least a couple of months. Unfortunately the pool is yards, so I will look for a meter pool in the meantime. It is pretty nice though, and never crowded, which is a big plus.

Oh my goodness!
Aldi, this new challenge couldn't have come at a better time, and the distance is just perfect for me.
I'll probably be the last one to finish, but I can cross the finish line before my pool membership expires sometime in September!
Just perfect for my 1 swim-per-week!

See you all at Mobile Bay!

Sounds great! Count me in! I am off to bed now. Trying to knock the bronchitis sinus infection and ear infection out so I can hit the pool again. :)

Tis ok, Skipper :P you can start tracking miles if you want. I'm sure we will all be on board by tomorrow or Wednesday.

Emily, I think the official start will be Mon, 14th but you can start tracking if you want. Mark already has :P

Sounds great to me. I hate to give up one I already swam. And I would feel like I was cheating if I counted my swims toward both so I will continue the Amazon until we start this new challenge officially and then I will split my swims. Whenever you decide to officially start is fine with me. :)

LOVE IT!

I guess I jumped the gun, Captain. False start! I already put my miles towards MBC. I can take them back, just let me know when you settle on a start date and I'll comply either way.

Ha! I wish I was a captain! :P

Emily, you can split your swims or you can track them both; I think the point here is to stay motivated. Feel free to join us at any time.

What do you guys say we give it a week so we can start all of us together?

Aldi

I think I will try to quickly finish up my Amazon River Challenge and then catch up with everyone here. Or maybe I will split my swims. Half of each swim will go to each challenge. I would like to do what the team is doing for motivation. I think this is a great thing and the challenges are great ways to compete with yourself (and others) to reach your goals!! :)

Mark,

Back when we had the English channel challenge and the Amazon river challenge running at the same time, what we did was to: if you signed up for both, the post for both; if not... chose the one you like the best.

So, you can do both if you'd like to, you can start counting miles today for the MBC and continue to add miles to the Amazon River challenge.

Does that work for you??

Aldi

This sounds great...unfortunately I don't have a pool membership right now. There is an awesome indoor pool close by though, and I think membership is about $100/year. I will look into joining, and maybe give up my gym's gold membership instead. I'd like to get back into swimming 5 days a week like I did in high school. I lost weight without even dieting when I started varsity swimming! LOL

Hi Aldi,

I think this is a great idea, especially unifying everyone on the same challenge. What should we do with the existing challenges we are on. I'm about 1/2 way down the Amazon, should I stop and switch to Mobile Bay? Should I finish the Amazon and then go to Mobile Bay? Or should I do them at the same time? I'm open to whatever you think is best.

Hey Guys!

As promised, here I am presenting you with a new swimming challenge. This time we're gonna honor our team mate Juanita (AUBURNGAL) who requested we would swim Mobile's Bay since is near where she lives and it is an intermediate distance we can all swim and feel challenged by it at the same time.

Here's some info on the challenge location:

Mobile Bay narrows from 20 miles (32 km) wide near the mouth to about 7 miles (11 km) at the northern end, nearly 30 miles (48 km) from the Gulf of Mexico. The deepest areas of the bay are located within the shipping channel, sometimes in excess of 75 feet (23 m) deep, but the average depth of the bay is only 12 feet (3.7 m).

We're gonna be swimming the mouth which is equal to 20 miles or 32 kilometers. We're not going to set an end date so we can all swim it when we have the time but it would be great if you could set a personal end date as a goal(post it in the appropriate tread).

I think this challenge should be the one in which we all participate so we can become one whole team.

Good luck!
Aldi
