I feel for you and your son. I am currently dealing with this with my 9 year old son Chance. He just barely passed the 3rd grade and did not pass his ISTEP this year at all. He does fine when you sit down with him and work one on one with him but he could care less about doing his work any other time. He often complains its hard or boring. And I constantly hear how he hates school. I am sure it is not ADHD simply because he is not hyperactive, but I have wondered about the ADD part.

I had to reschedule his appointment because we just got back from vacation on the 1st. The whole family was completely jet lagged. I plan to call tomorrow to reschedule

Please let me know what you find out. Your senario is exactly what I have been going through with my eight year old daughter. She was finally sent in front of a panel at her school to determine if she has a learning disability and it was determined that she does not have a learning issue, but that being in a class with two different grades was to distracting for her.....

Your Dr may just find that the teacher is not challenging your child enough. I used to get in trouble all the time but it wasn't for any reason other than I was bored with the work since it seemed repetitive to me.

My son is just the opposite & has been diagnosed by multiple types of drs and specialists with multiple Learning Disabilities & ADHD so just be prepared for anything.

My son's appointment is scheduled for June 2nd with his primary Dr. He has been little more focused but not during all the class time. He did tell me he has been talking in class and this is why he is not finishing his work. Right now the teacher is aware that he has a pending Dr appt and so we are just taking it one day at a time

With my daughter things are so different. She is not a loud talker as she pretty much stays to herself. She has never been loud or hyper in her life but just cannot concentrate or focus on the things she needs to do. She has to have the hands on things to help her out the most especially with being dyslexic. She is on a med called Vyvanse and had lost 20 lbs in the past 6 months which in this case she needed to lose due to asthma meds. She is at a healthy weight now for her height and age but how do I keep it on her? I don't want her to get to little and become unhealthy so any suggestions.

Some of the questions the Dr. will ask is: Does he get up in the middle of class? Does he interrupt when others are speaking, talks out of turn? Does he stay on task?

Even if he doesn't have ADD, the Psychologist might find a learning disablity, which the school can use to provide services to aid his education.

My son has ADHD, so he is full of energy during the day and the medicine helps calm him down and helps him focus.

Thank you all for support and ideas. We are in the process of trying to focus him and seeing if this is truly spring fever, but I did make an appointment today with his primary care Dr just in case. Monday he still had not done his work but today he came home excited about getting his work done. Thank you all for you support. emoticon

has your son always been this way or is this new. My son was not completing his work a few weeks ago in school and got in big trouble with his teacher, but she called it spring fever. We focussed him in and punished him by making him do extra at home and it worked. However, if your son has always had focusing problems, you might consider talking to your doctor. The school can not make the diagnosis (I used to teach special ed). Instead, it is a medical diagnosis and if your doctor does confirm the school can give you a 504 plan for "other health impaired" ro make changes at school for him.

I would talk with your doctor about the problems and see what he would recommend. My daughter is 9 and is also dyslexic. She has had problems since kindergarten and had to have speech every since as well. She is not one to disrupt the class at all instead she is so quiet no one can even hear her when she talks. I talked with the doctor because she really just had a hard time focusing on what she was reading and could never retain anything she had read to memory. My insurance won't pay for any psychologist testing for ADD but talked with her pediatrician about her symptoms and we tried her on a med called Vyvanse. We started her off on a low dose and raised as needed and so far she is doing a lot better with her work. She still makes some bad grades very now and then but usually it's because she doesn't want to do it being stubborn. This med has also made her lose weight which she needed to do but now that she is at a healthy weight I will have to watch and make sure she doesn't get to low. If he made good grades up till now I wouldn't think it would be ADD though but I could be wrong. Do you think he made need glasses? I know Mikayla had to have them as well.

If you take your son to your regular doctor, the doctor may refer you to someone else who has more knowledge in that area. Whichever doctor it is should do some tests to help determine if that is the right diagnosis. He/she will probably also have you fill out a long questionaire that is kind of like a personality test to help see where you, as a parent, see your child. They sometimes have teachers also fill out something of this nature to determine how it really is at school. Some teachers will just categorize your child and want them "drugged" up to make it easier for them and others will truly want the best for your child. I think it is good you are looking into it because if this really is the problem, it won't just go away. Good luck. I know it takes a lot of patience in such a situation.

My soon to be seven year old has me very worried about him. I spoke with his teacher and he has not been doing his work in class. She told me is he talking and distracting other students or sitting there not doing his work. My son is an advanced reader but because he is not doing his classwork his grades do reflect such. He is failing math because he is not doing his classwork. When left own his own to do his homework this take double if not triple the estimated time for homework completion. I am really concerned. I have read on the internet about Inattentive Type ADD and wondered if anyone knew about it. I plan to call his primary care DR for an appointment because I am at the end of my rope. Please help me!
