Great Idea!!! Kids learn by us and what a better motivation tool than your child (ren) they are at times brutally honest and only say outloud what we think inside but you know that it isn't vicious because they love you! emoticon

I think including the kids is a great idea. Mine are 6 and almost 16. I just decided on a healthy living plan 2 days ago (and boy do we need it). So far it's been great, it's hard to get the 16 year old involved but we've still been having a lot of fun. The 6 year old is helping to pick out and plan healthy foods to eat, writing the lists and we are going through the store together picking out healthier alternatives, (helps with his reading, writing and has other educational value as well). We've been making dinner together and dancing or jogging etc. to see who can "move the most" while we prep the food and cook it. On a work/school day we don't have much time but after the dinner thing the kids and i go for a walk/speed-walk/run and the kids pick the route, so between trying to get each other spooked in the dark and looking for the biggest hills to go up so we can run down the other side it's been a lot of fun, and this time of year we've seen lots of beautiful Christmas lights to look at as well... we've also enjoyed a bike ride, playing the challenges on the wii, (the 6 year old loves the run on the wii) and are constantly challenging each other to find fun ways to keep moving... even while watching a tv show he jumped up and said bet you can't do jumping jack for the whole song (on the tv show) and we giggled while we jumped... hope we can keep it up!

You are stronger than you think!

Believe in yourself and be the difference!

Kids are Worth it and so are you!

You can choose to be... anything...

So what type of rules do we want on the challenge. 30 minutes 5 times a week (150 minutes) physical activity with the kids such as playing games outside, walking, doing the wii with them, etc. Log your minutes in so that at the end of the month you can see how much one on one time you spent with the kids and being fit at the same time?

Well the past week and a half have been a blur and will continue for another week and a half. I went from having each night with the kids to cook dinner, go over homework and exercise to Planning for the fall festival, scheduling two pumpkin patch fund raisers, selling popcorn for the cub scouts, becoming den leaders for the cub scouts and being room mom to two kids classes. Needless to say my only down day last week was Friday night in which i fell asleep on the couch and did not move until mid day Saturday. This week was PTA meeting Monday, Den leader meeting on Tuesday, Clean house Wednesday and, Pack meeting tonight in addition to working full time. If running around like a chicken with your head cut off counts I have really been exercising and running with the kids. ha ha

Last night I worked in the yard with the kids again and sadly i have to do it again tonight. I am so tired for working on my lawn. It better be lush and green within the next 6 weeks or I am going to cry!

Last night I was working on my yard, the kids wanted to help me with the spreading of the compost and top soil mixture and the spreading of the grass seed. Tonight I get to work on the back yard. I don't know how much exercise the kids are really getting but they sure are getting dirty.

okay, I'm in. 30 minutes every night with my kids. I will walk with them every night this week. My oldest suggested this last night so now that it is "her idea" she is willing to participate.
and she is going to ride her bike along side of us.

So we want to set like weekly goals such as spend at least 30 minutes a day doing some sort of physical exercise with your children? Their are tons of options such as playing with them running around in the back yard, walking to the park and playing at the park, walking the dog, for bad weather days playing the wii for taking them to the family room at the gym.

Right now I have been opting for the outside stuff because in about 7 weeks it will start being to cold to take them much outside. I am going to join the local parks and rec and start swimming in the winter with the kids.

One of my personal goals is to do more physical things with my children. My 10yr old son is great at requesting me to go to the park or take a walk with him. He's a great motivator.

I love this idea!! Fortunatley my kids are very active and love to run around playing. We go for family walks most evenings and take the dogs. They both play soccer. But it is still easy to get to the end of the day and realize we have been inside most of the day.

I've had my girls go outside for an hour every night and play with the neighborhood kids. They have been riding a cardboard box down a grass hill, but they are active and having fun. this gives me time to ride my stationary bike 2x a night. Also, tonight we will walk to our old neighbors house about 2.5 miles to and from to give them a visit. Should be great exercise and get to see friends.

Last night I took the kids and dogs to the doggie park and then walked over to the play park for kids. While they played I walked cirlce around the park with the dogs. I am hoping with keeping them active a few nights during the week they will learn good healthy habits and not the sit down and watch TV, play video game habits that my son keeps leaning toward.

my daughter has started getting a little chunky. She is in the third grade and weighs about 70lbs and she is pretty tall. The problem is, I noticed that she has started to not be so active, getting kind of the couch potato thing going on. And when we do walk, she'll say, my legs hurt or my feet hurt or she'll be out of breath. I can't have my daughter having to deal with the same things I am. I don't want to make it a weigh issue, though, I don't want a battle between me and her. What I did do is tell her that we are going to get "healthy" as a family and get more active to make our muscles stronger and to feel better. She took it in stride and does well.
She eats out of boredom and I try to just buy the healthy snacks so that she doesn't snack on junk.

My daughter is in the 95% for her height and weight which is healthy. But, when I went back to school shopping for her I noticed that the size 6X was too tight and the 7's are 4 inches to long. She is going in Kindergarten and she weights 52 pounds. She is not chubby because she is tall but I have noticed her poor eating habits. I worry she will struggle like me unless I get her active.

We cooked out for Labor day and I had tons of food left over. So last night I just had to heat up dinner not cook from scratch. It worked out great because there was not "I'm starving and I want a snack" before I feed them dinner. So we ate as soon as we got home and then took a family walk with the dogs. Everyone enjoyed it. We went to two parks (I walked cirles around the play area while the kids played) and everyone slept good last night.

I think I am going to start cooking in large quanities so I only have to cook every other night. Tonight I am planning to take the kids and the dogs to the doggies park and then to the play area for the kids at a parks a couple miles away. I do not want to do the same thing every night because I do not want the kids to loose interest in staying active.

I'm in. Starting last week, I challenged my daughter to get healthier and get more active. She learned how to ride a two wheeler without training wheels so she is going to start riding her bike and I will walk with the other kids. Also, she swims, she will walk with me sometimes and we play more. She goes outside to play at the playground and with her friends and I think it is great. She is my coach and makes me do my exercise and we are doing it together.

I think that would be really hard for parents like me. My exercise is walking to and from work and on the job plus start next week I won't be getting home until it is time for dinner and then it will time for bed time routine.

I know that school has started for many of us and now comes the hectic, run home from work squeeze in homework assistance while cooking dinner, baths, bed and some family time. So I was thinking what about adding something else in there. What do you think about a challenge that includes your kids. A challenge where you log in weekly what exercises you did with your kids. Like we rode our bikes, we walked the dog together, we played softball, etc.

I know my son would easily fall into the habit of video games, cartoons, etc. I feel I have to push him out the door to do things. I do not want to raise him to be a couch potato. Did not know if anyone wants to have a weekly challenge of doing something active with your kids for a specific amount of time a week?
