I would like to have at least 4 of my short stories, and 1 novella published by my 65th birthday. I'm 63.

"I can do all things if I just get off my but's and admit I'm in control of me!" SGM 1:1-5 The only real verse I need.

Never say you didn't have enough time: You have the same amount of time that was given to Helen Keller, Albert Einstein, William Shakespeare, Julius Caesar, Winston Churchill.

I also want to support myself with my writing. This will be challenging the next few years while we have one in college.

My writing goal is to be able to support my family with my writing beginning no later than 2025. The dream is for my husband and I to retire when our youngest graduates from college. I have until then to pay off all of our debts and build a writing carrer that will pay for us to live off of and travel.

My goal is to once again be self supportive in my writing.

Awhile back I had my own online newspaper but closed shop in 2008 due to some major life changes and issues. I miss the flexibility and yes even the stress! I still freelance write but I have not found anything that is both steady and is paying well enough ... YET!

Goals:
Publish at least one novel before I die.
Publish a book collection of poetry.
Compete in various writing contests.
Write a stage play. ( I love monologues.)
Get my comic book idea published. ( I already love the characters and they seem so real to me. I dreamed about them once.)

I didn't realize I had so many goals floating around. Guess I shall write all of this down and post it next to my motivation board! Wishing everyone a wonderful experience while reaching all their goals!

My ultimate writing goal: To be able to make a living writing. I don't even really care what kind of writing it is. I suppose, however, if I can't write, I'll settle for being surrounded by books (hence my MLIS schooling).
My head is full of stories, and while I normally write fantasy, recently I've been writing science fiction. I've also written some contemporary fiction. My short term goal is to have one published (paid) short story by the end of the year. I've written for school magazines, but those don't pay.

I write technical stuff all day and have for years but my head is full of all these stories. Hearing that others are actually out there writing down those stories in their heads gives me the push to at least write a little every day. Thanks, Sparklers!

I would have to say that my ultimate goals in writing are 1. to be able to reach someone....help someone else out who has gone through similar situations as I have, 2. be able to work from home doing something I love. I have been sick for the last 6 months and haven't been able to go back to work. I would love to just get my name out there and start doing something I can really appreciate.

Thanks Franceslucas. I'll have to check it out.

AbbySharpe, no worries - I'm not all about perfection. My issue is I know I have the intelligence to write well, so I don't want to write something really crappy on the first go-round and have to totally rewrite it later. I prefer to write a lot all at once so it has adequate flow and consistent feeling. Then later I can go back and correct a few rough areas and any grammar or spelling errors. Usually by the 3rd of 4th read it's as good as I'll get it. But if I can't follow it after the first write it isn't going to be easily corrected. Though I don't have to worry about perfecting one chapter before moving on, as I prefer to not write in chapters. It allows me to flow much easier. Then on a future read I can find natural breaking points to create chapters. To me, it feels more organic and less scripted. One annoyance of mine is when a writer ends a chapter then continues into the new one exactly where they left off. It's like taking a long breath and pausing to adjust your clothes in the middle of a sentence.

Just be careful, 1stState, that you don't fall into the "it has to be perfect" trap. It's important to move on, because if you work on a chapter until it's perfect, you'll never get to the next one.

though you can go back and make sure it's perfect before submitting to agents or editors. :)

That is great! Little steps on a regular basis will help get you where you need to go. I was writing off and on about my story and it is still evolving. It took 1.5 years to get my first book out. Working on number 2 now! Slow and steady wins the race! You can do it!

I've been writing for years, though rarely in a way that's for public consumption. I do have a story I've spent years on I'm thinking about trying to finish (I'm at 42,000 words and I'd like to double that at least), but it will need some changes to turn it from a extremely personal project to a public project. I have several good ideas I'd like to add.

I just got back the writing bug in the last 2 weeks or so. Because of my health and all the time I have to dedicate to doctors, paperwork, and just taking care of myself I won't have a decent amount of time with adequate brain power to spend on writing, so I will be taking my time on it. I'm not on a deadline, so I don't want to rush it.

I am starting to check out some books from the library about writing and getting published (just because I'm not going to expect it doesn't mean I won't ever try to get a story/novel published). I'm also hoping to go to an event in August where a published author will speak to people who want to know what it's like. I've been reading more and paying attention to what I like and dislike about the story and the writing style. Plus I'm paying attention to things I see/watch/read/dream to try to find ideas I can use.

Of course, nothing will go anywhere if I can't get my thoughts and ideas typed out, but I'd like to get back to some groundwork before I dive too far in. I don't like to rewrite something dozens of time (even in school I was rarely asked to do more than 1 draft) so I'd like to have it close to my standards right off the bat.

My dream would be to have a story that touched people's lives and made them feel things they hadn't before. I want them to look at others differently - better - after reading it.

My goal is to write something meaningful to me and share it with others to see if it affects them as much as it affects me. If it goes beyond that, it would be awesome and unexpected.

I am so glad to see this topic! I have lots of goals and dreams! Specifically I want to finish my journal devotionals starting with Genesis. Have one completed and working my way through the Bible. I have others as well. Looking to finish at least 100 books that are self help and related to God's word and making a difference! Looking for God to help me with this bold goal! Thanks for asking! :)

I would love to have my poetry published. Some of it has been, but I would love to win a contest. It's also a dream of mine to turn some of my poems into songs on the guitar and record an album. I also write childrens stories and it would be neat to have them published too. I don't know if any of these things will ever happen for sure, but it sure doesn't hurt to dream! emoticon

Quote from Garihood on 1/7/11: "My ultimate goal is to write children's books that make at least one child feel the way I did when I was young and reading for the sheer joy of it. I think the ultimate compliment I could receive is to have one child come up to me and say that my book was their favorite."

Beautifully said, Garihood. That is my dream, too!

I love seeing all the dreams and goals about being a published author. I'm no different. I would LOVE to see my name on the bookstore shelf and watch it rise on the NYT best seller list. This year I'm aiming to sell a book, and if that doesn't happen, have another one finished and polished and ready for submission.

Good luck, everyone!

I write because I have something, many somethings, to say. I want to challenge and encourage and cause change in people through my writing and through speaking to audiences. I don't dream of fame...that is not enough of a tangible goal for me. The chance of ending up on the NY Times Best Seller List is slim, and not really the measure of success I am looking for.

I have to write, and have always had that urgency, a desire and drive to express everything through writing.

While I would love to be as big as JK Rowling and have my characters adored by billions, I just want to be a published, best selling author who is able to make a living strictly from my writing career. I long for the day that something like that happens. Of course, I really need to put much more work on a daily basis into my writing and find a nice happy medium where I can get exercise in and write while not ignoring everyone in my life. How do people do it?

I'd love my stories to be the next big thing. I've always dreamt of being the next Tolkien, or to be more up-to-date, the next J.K. Rowling. :laughs: I'd like to see my novella on the Big Screen, to have fans and go to signings or readings of my books. I'd also like to publish a chap-book or two, and I even have some children's books in mind.

Another thing I'd love to do is write my autobiography...I know I haven't really lived tong enough yet, but so much has happened in my life and it'd be nice to be a modern Louisa May Alcott and write out my life with my parents and siblings in a "Little Women"esque series.

I've posted my writing on a few online sites (I've even posted on here, in my blogs), and I even had a secretary at one point who was encouraging me to write every day...I just need to get my stories out there. I should probably send my novella to a publisher once it's finished, but I'm afraid of rejection (I know, I know. We're all rejected at some point, or at many points) and I'm afraid of the hassle...do I need an agent, do I have the money to pay a publisher, what if I publish and no-one likes my story?? I don't want to change my style to suit others, only to be lost behind a façade.

I find television very educational. The minute somebody turns it on, I go to the library and read a good book.

My ultimate writing goal is to have a series of novels I am co-authoring, be published and adored. I'd also like to see my solo work published and doing well. Not for money or fame, just to see my name on a dust jacket. It's all I've ever wanted.

My ultimate goal is to write something that others will read, preferably a novel. I want to write something that I am proud to show to others, and that others will appreciate. In order to do this I need to work on actually completing novels that I begin, and things like that.

But yeah.

I want to be read. Or, well, my novel.

I'd like to have my first children's book published within the next six months. That will make my 84 year old mom proud. It's time to just finish the manuscript and do it!

"Ultimate" is a pretty big word, isn't it? My immediate dreams and goals are definitely different than my "ultimate" dreams and goals. Some day, when enough people have died I'd like to publish a book that would be part autobiography and part fiction. I think my younger years would be an interesting story but I don't want to get sued or hurt people's feelings. I've got some skeletons that need to stay in the closet too. So if I could find a way to put it all together and get it published without hurting anyone then that would be the ultimate I think, especially if people read it.

I also have some poetry, and especially one poem, that I think would make a great song if I could find a recording artist (and musicians) to do it. It needs to be done by someone sexier and more famous than me and I don't know anything about how to write music. I just have the words on paper and the sound in my head. I would love to get that recorded and have it be a hit some day. THAT would be the ultimate for me musically. :-)

My first goal is to finish writing my poetry, essays, etc. about mental health issues and devise a way to publish them as a book. Then, a portion of the sales from the book will go to a mental health organization. This is my first writing goal.

I write to make people happy. When someone tells me that they enjoyed reading what I write, it is the best feeling in the world. I knew at the age of 5 that I wanted to be a writer some day, and it took all these years to make it really happen (I'm 28).

I would love to be able to be a full-time writer and see my name on all the best seller lists, but even if that never happens, I will still write, because as long as it makes 1 person happy, I've lived my dreams.

I want my writing to be enjoyed -and I want to enjoy the writing part! To that end I am trying to write features on travel websites - hoping that this will enable me to visit more places, get more inspired, write more, visit more ... you get the picture!
I've just got my first job doing this and am now planning my first proper, paying article. (When I say paying I mean this in a very, VERY, small way. But it's a start. emoticon

I've always wanted to be a published writer. Of course I know that the chance of that happening is very slim. But maybe one day... I kind of refuse to give up hope.

As far as more realistic goals are concerned, I want to finish the first draft of my first novel this year.

I want to get out of this academic jail I find myself in and take a bus to where no one knows me, find a part time job to pay for food and rent, and spend the rest of my time writing about the people I meet. Everyone has a story, and people rarely get the attention they deserve, or even a listening ear. I want to listen, take notes, and find the truly amazing person within those who tend to get overlooked.

My writing goals are pretty simple right now. #1 write something every day. I have trouble making the things that are a priority in my mind a priority in my practical life. My ultimate goals are to create stories out of all the ideas I have written down on my precious 3x5 cards: a historical novel based on an ancestor discovered in genealogy research, a medical thriller, and a book of short stories based on the adventures of homeschooling three children for a total of 25 years. It felt good to write that down, now to focus on the simple goal to reach those big ones!

There're two things I really want to do:

Nonfiction--be a historical writer, which i'm kinda working on the farther I go with my masters degree, that is.

Fiction--detective fiction set in Houston (which will need oodles of research to pull it off--historical fiction after all, i wanna get the places and feeling right)

My ultimate goal is to write children's books that make at least one child feel the way I did when I was young and reading for the sheer joy of it.

I think the ultimate compliment I could receive is to have one child come up to me and say that my book was their favorite.

Well, this may be a little far-fetched, but I have always dreamed of writing my novel, an agent immediately picking up the book and getting it published. I would go on a book tour and see all the lives I have touched. Then one day, while I am working my regular job, I get a call from my agent saying Paramount wants to buy the rights to the book to make it into a movie. From there, they actually cast me as the lead actor. Haha... I like to dream big!!! emoticon

My wish is that I would find motivation to write again. Would love to have just one thing published. I was into writing children stories, but have gone on to other things now. Mainly getting back into shape.
It use to be I could write most of the day, but now I've lost all inspiration to write.

At the moment I write for the enjoyment of writing And what I'm writing is a nonfiction; my life. Not neccessarily my autobiography but just a very special section of my life. I'm writing it as a story not a documentary.
My immediate goal is just to finish it have it edited and ready to go to print. After that we'll see about finding a good couple of publishers to submit it to. Yes I would love to see it on store shelves and make a little money with it as well. But all in good time. First we work on seeing it to completion and "perfection" or as close to it as possible. My life long dream is to write a novel. Some how between being a mom and wife, I lost myself. I one day looked in the mirror and did not recognize the reflection. I decided to find myself and go back to doing the things that I enjoy. My children are now 14 and 16 and starting to do their own things, which does not always involve me. (Not complaining, that is a beautiful thing). So, it is time to embrace me again.

I originally wanted to write a novel that would get made into a movie, but I realize that it would be much quicker to write a screenplay -- I know what exactly is going to be about, & I already have some bits of dialogue. To push it even further, I'd love to play the main character.

Like the rest of you I hope to support myself with my writing. I write screenplays mostly for a youth audience and it is my goal to supply material with positive messages for children. So to make a long story short I want to entertain and inform but to do this I must get my screenplays off of the page and onto the screen so my ultimate goal is to see my words put into action on the screen.

I want to use my writing skills to help others with problems, via media attention. It's all about what other's find of value, not me. I think the secret to best writing is finding something people need or find interesting, not how I feel about my writing (which is pretty average I must say)! emoticon

I dream of being able to support myself with my writing. Of course, that means I have to finish it and send them in. I have about 5 or 6 books that I have yet to finish but all they need is for me to just do and send them out. Gotta get on the ball! I tend to write in the sci-fi/fantasy genre and hope to make a name for myself one day!

My dream is to be the next "It" thing in Gothic Romance literature. It would be the ultimate goal.

Currently looking at building a website inspired from a trip to a historic place here, called Port Arthur. My son has taken 650 photos during our camping trip.

I'm learning how to use WIX, prior to that being Tripod..

Writing is a tool. I am a person who USES things, esp. when I'm emotive about the reason for it. Writing isn't a passion, but it's what I DO! I love to express creatively. I am about to start another ART unit with Australia Open University in March.

Getting my weight down from 212 lbs to 170 lbs would be a great start, to kick off 2010.

I do what I can, when I can.

My goal is to write (and get published) a novel. I am in the middle of rewrites to reach this goal.

Then I want to do it again.

Hi! I wrote in journals or notebooks for about twelve years from about 1989 till 2000. I hope to go through these to take out the good things I've learned or heard and throw away the rest. I want to leave this as a sort of legacy for our adult kids.

I have a big green container full of these in my bedroom. This is all pretty overwhelming! I think I need to just do it, but that's one of the problems! The problem with my journals is they aren't dated. I wish I had dated them, but I didn't.

I also want very much to write my story. Darlene

In 2010 I plan on spending more time promoting my books. I also need to get more organized and manage my writing time better.

Wow! You all have much better writing dreams than I. I just want to be able to use my writing to get a job; then I can make money to move to the same country as my partner!

I want to be one of those writers in a magazine or newspaper where people pick it up and say "I wonder what Isobel thinks of this or that." (Thats my real name - I just realised it doesn't make sense without saying that!). But that seems a bit silly - I just really want to be able to write both for pleasure and for work.

My dream: To have impact. To tell a story that readers feel so deeply that it engages them/devours them/changes them.

My immediate goal: To finish my current MS by the end of January 2010 and send it to 50 literary agents.

My greater goal: To write the book of my heart - a historical YA adventure set in 1880's San Francisco. I started writing six years ago because I wanted to tell this tale. I think I have the skills now. It is time for it to be born.

First: Good luck to all of you!

I just want to get back the free flow of how I use to write. I was once able to immerse myself into another world and write about it for hours upon hours. I still can do this sometimes but nothing how it use to be. Darn it all-real life got in the way..Any suggestions on how to get to this place again would be greatly appreciated.

I did have a success/celebration: One of my short stories was published with a collaboration of stories called Patchwork Path: Dad's Bowtie. I was so happy I laughed and cried at the same time. It felt wonderful-still does!

Well, be kind to yourselves and keep on Sparkin'. :)

Dreams and goals - I have many. Ultimately though, I would like to be published, known (at least by those who wildly enjoy the genre I write in), and able to support myself casually on the money made from my writing. I don't really reach for being insanely rich. If I did, I think I would choose something other than young adult fiction. Still, having enough to pay the rent/bills and keep myself casually happy would be all I really require. I am a simple person with simple needs, so I don't need much to be happy.
I would love if my stories became movies, but I see them being more in the lines of web-episodes more than full movie worthy; but, Twilight became a movie and Vampire Diaries became a television show, so its always possible.

More immediate goals, as I mentioned in my introduction, are to find an agent and get my work out there into publishing land. This seems to be the hardest part right now; the waiting is excruciating, but I am patient yet persistent. And I am working on my second novel, so continued work and soon completion would be an added immediate goal.

I, like some of you, want to publish! I want to walk in Barnes and Noble and casually pick up my book and look in the back to see my picture. I write historical romance mostly, though I am kicking around a romantic suspense and a time-travel/paranormal thing or two. I have gotten fat and depressed over the past few years though and the doctor ssid I have to do something besides sitting and writing. So here I am.

Oh, and Debgiggs, I took a correspondance creative writing class through Indiana University many years back and it was awesome. It really forced me to "stretch my writing muscles."

I would really like to write a book based on my personal experiences. I was adopted as a baby and just met (some of) my bio fam, including my birth mom. I've been through substance abuse problems and a lot more along the way (I could probably write a series...lol). I'm not sure if I want to make it a nonfiction inspirational/self-help type of book or a novel based around the events in my life. Either way, that is one thing that I definitely want to do in my life. Whether it will give me fame or fortune, I doubt it, but achieving the goal would make me happy.

WOW! It's been so long since I've been on here, and that's why I've been kicking myself. :) My goal is to one day write a children's book. I'm in the process (long process) of taking a writing course. I'm just wondering who else has taken a writing course, online, or correspondense and how did you like it? Any site information would be greatly appreciated. Happy Writing! :)

I want to attempt to get published and my plan is to start at the top publishing places. For that I'll have to try and get an agent first.

My daughter feels the same way. She needs to get this story out of her head but is scared at the same time because it does make it more real and "out there".

I love Evie's comment about having books made into movies - a lot of my stories feel like they would make great movies, but I can't write screenplays to save my life. That's a good ultimate goal, though - to have a movie made of a book.
Right now, my short term goal is to COMPLETE the two modern fantasy "novels" (I just love using that word) that I'm working on. Then we'll see where to go from there.
