That's exciting, Lou.

I am earning more money from my freelance curriculum writing business in the first quarter of this year than the whole first year I tried this.

What I'm celebrating: the release of the fourth anthology I've edited. Mardi Gras Murder, a collection of crime stories set during Mardi Gras.

Of interest to members of this group (I hope): our press' upcoming anthologies.

Hello Diane,
I just checked out your Word Press link and am very interested in your publishing company. I'm impressed with the services you offer to writers. I tried to hit LIKE, but am having trouble logging onto my own Word Press account. When I do, I'll try to write to you there. I'm in Northern Indiana, near South Bend, where in Southeast Michigan are you, if you don't mind my asking?

I was notified last week that both of the entries I submitted to the OCWI writing contest received awards. The short one received Second Place in Humor, and the draft of my novel received Honorable Mention. I'm particularly pleased with the award given the novel, considering it was a draft competing against polished pieces. An occasional pat on the back provides a lot of encouragement during solitary hours spent at the keyboard. emoticon

I published my memoir on single parenting by choice, "Wolfe Cub", earlier this summer. It was created because my teenage son came to me one day after school, and told me that he thought I was a good mom; he asked me to write down all of my secrets so when he had children, he'd know what to do. That's high praise coming from a 17 year old! So I did it. It took a couple of years to write, and another couple to edit and publish while developing a publishing company with my family (oy, the work!), but now, it's out!

I've already edited eight other books for our company (with many more in production); I've written two novels, which will be coming out in the summer of 2014, and I'm planning on my NaNoWriMo project to be released by the end of 2014.

And now, I can't decide if it's more fun to publish my own work... or help other authors as they bring their work to us for publication. It's an amazing thing when your career brings you so much joy; and even better when you get to share that process with your family and closest friends! emoticon

Yeah, I really don't have a lot to complain about! emoticon

Completed writing my son's adoption story, for him. It may be the most important thing I have ever written. We have long told him about his adoption and he has always known he was adopted. But recently--he is 22--I realized he did not know all the details, probably because he was told over time when he was young. Anyway, I wrote a draft a month ago, had some people read it, and last night finally gave it to my husband for final "proofing" of content and writing. (DH is a fine editor for the last stages of my work). Anyway, I feel great that it is done and will give it to my son to read when he is home from college over the holidays. He had requested the writing and I've requested having him home when he reads it so he can ask any questions that may come up. emoticon

Hi! I want to celebrate the release of my debut novel through Amazon. It's at:
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00D0UN0T0 It's a contemporary romance that starts in Vegas. Here's a short blurb:

Laura Todd attends a conference in Las Vegas and meets Fox Thornton, a consultant to the hotel industry. Far away from her normally quiet life, Laura is swept away by her strong attraction for Fox. They both know the score, and neither expects to see the other again. After their hot weekend, circumstances bring them back together in Miami, where Fox is investigating a suspected embezzlement and Laura is the prime suspect. Can their brief romance rekindle in the real world, where suspicions and misunderstandings lurk behind every corner? Will their no-strings-attached affair evolve into a strong relationship, or is it destined to stay in Vegas?

Thanks for all of the support I've gotten from these boards.

I never did hear from either of them, no. I sent messages to both of them, withdrawing my manuscript, and got a lovely "congratulations on placing your book" from Samhain, and radio silence from Carina.

Doesn't mean I'm giving up on them, though. I've got a WIP with a deadline of 3/1 for a 2013 holiday open call at Carina -- theme "Home for the Holidays" about returning military personnel. My viscountess's cook-maid, Polly, is going to marry her soldier sweetheart when he returns from the Battle of Copenhagen in December 1807. Makes me really glad I made my viscount a major in the 43rd (there were reasons, but I didn't HAVE to), because it handed me that date on a silver platter!

What a great story, Julian! I love how careful you were about sending out your submissions. Did you ever hear from Carina or Samhain? I'm so excited for you. I screamed in my car when I found out I sold my story. I love that yours was Christmas eve. What a great way to spend the holiday!!

Aha! Well, mine wasn't a phone call; as befits a book that's coming out from a digital-first imprint (as so much of the romance market is today), it was an email.

I finished the book at the end of August, and started sending it out around Labor Day. Most of the markets accept simultaneous submissions, so I had a whole timetable set up based on the publishers' stated turnaround times, so in theory I'd hear yes or no at about the same time from each. Carina and Samhain both said "12 weeks", so they went out first: Storm Moon said "send a partial, expect to hear back within 2 weeks whether we want to see the rest of it, and then expect to hear a final decision within 8 weeks." I sent mine out to them on 9/25.

All the other publishers had shorter posted turnarounds, so I hadn't sent to them yet.

Two weeks came and went, and nothing. I didn't poke, because I was busy working on a story for a Christmas open line call I'd seen on Storm Moon's website. Got it in just before the deadline, the answer-back date came and went, nothing. Round about the beginning of December, I sent them a polite note saying "...guess it wasn't accepted?" I got back an answer explaining that they'd been swamped, hadn't even managed to read mine before their internal deadline, and did I want to keep it in the pool for next year, or take it out of consideration? I said "sure, consider it for next year."

December 22, I get an email saying that they're "incredibly intrigued" by my partial manuscript, and please send the rest? I give my dear baby novel a quick brushing and polishing to make sure the formatting's correct, and send it back.

Two days later -- Christmas Eve -- I get the email offering me a contract.

Best. Christmas. Present. Ever.

(Oh, and a couple of weeks later, they accepted the Christmas story, too.)

Great blurb! I wish you much success.

Call story = when you get the phone call from your agent/editor that says, "I want to buy your book!" Like this: http://abigailsharpe.com/2012/07/17/i-have

I always think it's fun to hear how folks get the news. One of my friends was so excited she threw her shoes across the room. :)

The novel's coming out August 2 (if everything stays on track). Here's the blurb as it stands now:

Lieutenant William Thorne, of His Majesty's Navy, was a man of humble origins. He knew that his affair with Major Anthony Rockingham of the 43rd Infantry couldn't last forever, not only because the war against Napoleon sent him on blockade duty in the English Channel while the major's regiment trained ashore, but because Rockingham was a viscount, and viscounts must marry. When Rockingham's letter reached him, saying that he'd chosen Miss Caroline Filmer as his bride, it was no more than Thorne had expected.

What he had not expected, when he returned home after the Battle of Trafalgar, was to find an invitation to the christening of Rockingham's son. He had not expected, when he met the young viscountess, that he would fall instantly and passionately in love with her. And he had certainly never expected that Caroline would fall just as desperately in love with him. Thorne was sure that their feelings for each other could only lead to disaster, even more so as his love for Rockingham had never gone away. While the war with France continued, he found himself fighting a war within his own heart...

What do you mean by Call Stories?

I hate, hate, hate the synopsis. Once that's done, the query letter is a breeze. I entered a contest where the synopsis was part of the entry and it was AWFUL!! *laugh*

Good luck! I hope your beta readers are helpful and honest. :)

It's off to beta-readers and editors now, to look over and help me with anything that can be fixed up, then I need to start working on querying. I hate querying! Especially writing the synopsis. That's my least favorite part...

I'd call it an adult realistic fantasy. It has magic and magicians and occult elements, but takes place in the real world. :)

I did it!!!

Nervously a month or so ago I sent my first ever short (erotic) story submission in to a Cleis Press anthology. Yesterday I received notice that my story is included in the editor's final draft submitted to the publisher! So long as the publisher approves the final draft as is, I will have my name in print in 2012!!! W00T!

Nobody's had any success since June??!!! Come on, I don't believe that. Maybe I didn't get that agent and book deal yet, but I'm writing in the afternoons now (and chewing gum: helps you stay awake and burns 11 calories) and am seeing my word count go up and up and up. That's a success. Albeit a short one, but still a success.

For the Lamb who is in the center of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to springs of life-giving water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.

I fly to Vermont this Thursday to start my MFA at Goddard College! I found out I was accepted the first of this month, so I've been running around trying to prepare. I'm really excited to work with all the published authors and have a "publishable quality novel" (one of the requirements of the degree) by the end of the two year program!

I haven't been on here in a long time, but I've been busy working toward my first deadline on a contracted novella! I'll be published in January 2012. It's a romantic mystery set in Washington, D.C. at Mount Vernon. I wasn't planning on writing a romance, I'm more of a general fiction/women's fiction/suspense writer (still trying to find my genre, LOL!) but the project sold!

Now on to the next writing project!

I am finally published! My first novel was released on Nov 9, 2011 and is out in the bookstores and online. I am so happy to have finally realized a life-long dream. I thought all my dreams had been lost and forgotten long ago, but I finally made one come true.

My book is called the Double K Ranch. It's a romance novel set in today's Wyoming. You can check out my web, shown below, and get more info. I love reviews and critiques so feel free to let me know what you think of it.

Have a grand one, everyone, and I wish you all grand success in reaching all your goals and dreams.

Ghost!

One of my favorite poems--it's also in my book SORTS that needs a re-write:

Friendship Denied
by Mary Josephine Speed

I can't be just what you want, 'cause everyone's unique.
You can't decide what I'll want, or what I should seek.
I only, sometimes, know my wants, and need to be quite free
To refuse you what you want--your fervent hopes for me.

In your mind you have defined a stasis about me.
In my mind you're part divine, part uncharted sea.
You have me parametered; I have you untied.
You predict; I explore. You decide; Bye-bye!

OK, this isn't nearly as big as selling a screenplay, but I will be a "guest" poster on an online daily devotional blog. I just wanted to see what would happen if I submitted something I'd written to someplace, somewhere, sometime. So I did!

Got back a good review on two pieces, and one was accepted to be published during this very month, December 2010!!! I can't tell you the exact day yet; they ask that you wait until as close to the date as possible in case their scheduling changes. As soon as I can, I'll let you know for sure and will post the link so you can see me in cyberprint.

Later,
Sherrey

I sold one of my screenplays recently. Low budget independent situation but still pretty cool.

I used that momentum to get another screenwriting job writing a horror movie. Another low budget film.

Both should be hitting the film festival circuit in 2011.

The first one I sold might tickle people here. It's titled "Worth the weight" and is about an overweight fellow trying to get his life on track. They say write what you know.
